66 topics1724 MCQs1078 previous-year questions209 quizzesUpdated
Geography for competitive exams has three layers. Physical geography begins with the Solar System and the Earth, Latitudes, Longitudes and Time, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, the Atmosphere and Winds, and Oceans and Ocean Currents. Indian geography covers the Physiography of India, the Himalayas and the Northern Plains, the Rivers of India, Soils of India, Agriculture and Crops, and Minerals and Energy Resources. World geography adds continents and oceans, world rivers, mountains and deserts, and the important straits and canals.
Geography questions appear in SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS, Railway NTPC and Group D, UPSC Prelims, state PSC exams and some bank exams. Most are one-line facts: the origin of a river, the state where a dam or a national park lies, the soil suited to a crop, the largest producer of a mineral, or the name of a local wind. Map-based questions on the order of states along a coast or the location of a pass are also asked.
The topics on this GK24 page follow the syllabus order, physical geography before India and the world, because later topics use the earlier concepts. Each topic comes with notes and practice MCQs, and its previous-year questions carry an exam and year tag, so you can see the pattern for each exam. Use the mixed quiz sets to revise rivers, states, crops and minerals together before a test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Geography topics are asked most in SSC CGL and Railway exams?
Indian geography dominates SSC and Railway papers: the Rivers of India, Lakes, Dams and Waterfalls, Soils of India, Agriculture and Crops, Minerals and Energy Resources, Mountain Passes, and States, Capitals and Boundaries. From physical geography, the Solar System, Latitudes and Longitudes, the Atmosphere and Winds, and Earthquakes and Volcanoes come up regularly. World geography questions are fewer and usually cover straits, deserts, rivers and continents.
How should I prepare Geography for SSC and state exams?
Read the physical geography topics first so that terms like monsoon, tributary, plateau and ocean current make sense, then move to Indian geography with an atlas open beside you. Keep lists of river origins, dam and river pairs, crop and soil pairs and mineral-producing states, and revise them weekly. Attempt the MCQs and previous-year questions for each topic as soon as you finish it.
Is NCERT enough for Geography in competitive exams?
For SSC, Railway and most state exams, the Class 6 to 12 NCERT Geography books cover the concepts well, and a good school atlas fills in the locations. What NCERT does not give you is exam-style fact lists such as the largest producers or the order of rivers by length, so add a fact-oriented source and plenty of previous-year questions. UPSC Prelims needs NCERT plus a standard reference for physical geography.
How many Geography questions come in SSC CGL?
The number is not fixed, but the SSC CGL general awareness section usually has a few Geography questions, often around three to five, with a similar share in CHSL and the Railway exams. Since Indian geography facts rarely change, these are among the easier marks to secure, provided you have revised the rivers, states, crops and resources properly.
How do I remember rivers, dams and mountain passes for exams?
Learn them on the map rather than as a list. Trace each major river from its source to the sea, noting the states it crosses and the dams on it, and mark the passes along the Himalayan border on the same map. Group facts by state, for example all the dams and passes in Himachal Pradesh, and test yourself with the topic MCQs until recall is quick.
