Four lines of latitude are drawn on every map and asked in every general studies paper: the Equator at zero degrees, the Tropic of Cancer at about 23 and a half degrees north, the Tropic of Capricorn at about 23 and a half degrees south, and the two polar circles at about 66 and a half degrees. This chapter deals with the first three and, more exactly, with the countries they cross. The questions are almost always of one kind: a group of countries is given and you must say which line passes through all of them, or which continent escapes all three lines.
Why these three lines matter
The tilt of the earth on its axis, about 23 and a half degrees, fixes the two tropics. The sun can be vertically overhead only between them, so this belt is called the torrid zone. On 21 June the noon sun is overhead at the Tropic of Cancer, the summer solstice of the northern hemisphere; on 22 December it is overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn. On the two equinoxes, about 21 March and 23 September, it is overhead at the Equator and day and night are equal everywhere. At the Equator itself the day is close to twelve hours throughout the year, twilight is very short and the midday sun is always high, which is why equatorial lands are hot and wet with little seasonal change.
Countries through which the Equator passes
The Equator crosses the continents of South America, Africa and Asia, besides island groups in the Pacific. Learn the list in that order. In South America it passes through Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. In Africa it passes through Sao Tome and Principe, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. In Asia and the Pacific it passes through the Maldives, Indonesia and Kiribati. Two traps are set here again and again. First, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Nigeria are often slipped into the list although the Equator misses all three. Second, the Equator does not touch Europe, North America, Australia or Antarctica. Ecuador takes its very name from the line, and its capital Quito is the large capital city closest to it.
Countries on the Tropic of Cancer
Running from west to east, the Tropic of Cancer crosses Mexico and the Bahamas in North America; Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Niger, Libya and Egypt in Africa; and Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China and Taiwan in Asia. In India it almost halves the country and passes through eight states, which are worth memorising from west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. Remember that it misses Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, the usual distractors.
Countries on the Tropic of Capricorn
The Tropic of Capricorn crosses fewer countries because the southern hemisphere has less land. In South America it passes through Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil; in Africa through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique and Madagascar; and in Oceania through Australia. Brazil is the one country crossed by both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, a favourite one mark question. Of the three lines, the Tropic of Capricorn is the only one that crosses Australia, and none of the three crosses Europe or Antarctica.
Summary table
| Line | Latitude | Continents crossed | Countries to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equator | 0 degrees | South America, Africa, Asia and Pacific islands | Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Indonesia, Maldives |
| Tropic of Cancer | About 23 and a half degrees north | North America, Africa, Asia | Mexico, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Bangladesh, China |
| Tropic of Capricorn | About 23 and a half degrees south | South America, Africa, Oceania | Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Madagascar, Australia |
| Prime Meridian | 0 degrees longitude | Europe, Africa | United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Ghana |
Points often tested together
- The belt between the two tropics is the torrid zone; between a tropic and a polar circle lies the temperate zone, and beyond the polar circles the frigid zone.
- No land lies at the crossing of the Equator and the Prime Meridian; that point is in the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.
- Indonesia is the country through which the Equator passes with the greatest land spread, and Brazil has the longest stretch of the Equator over land in South America.
- The standard meridian of India, 82 degrees 30 minutes east, is a longitude and should not be confused with the Tropic of Cancer, which is a latitude.
Exam Point of View
Three question types cover this chapter. First, a group of three or four countries with the question which line passes through all of them; the safe anchors are Ecuador, Kenya and Indonesia for the Equator, Mexico, Egypt and India for the Tropic of Cancer, and Namibia, Botswana and Australia for the Tropic of Capricorn. Second, the odd one out, where Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria or Zambia is slipped into an Equator list, or Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh into the Tropic of Cancer list of Indian states. Third, linked questions on the dates, that is the sun overhead at the Tropic of Cancer on 21 June, at the Tropic of Capricorn on 22 December and at the Equator on the two equinoxes. Remember Brazil for both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Practice MCQs on this topic
Through which one of the following groups of countries does the Equator pass?
- A.Brazil, Zambia and Malaysia
- B.Colombia, Kenya and Indonesia
- C.Brazil, Sudan and Malaysia
- D.Venezuela, Ethiopia and Indonesia
Show answer
The Equator crosses Colombia in South America, Kenya in East Africa and the islands of Indonesia in South East Asia, so all three names in this group are correct.
Read the full explanation →Tropic of Cancer, Equator and Tropic of Capricorn do not pass through which of the following continents?
- A.North America and Antarctica
- B.Australia and Antarctica
- C.Europe and Antarctica
- D.Only Antarctica
Show answer
Europe lies entirely north of the Tropic of Cancer, its southernmost points being above 34 degrees north, and Antarctica lies far south of the Tropic of Capricorn, beyond the Antarctic Circle, so neither continent is touched by any of the three lines.

- A.21 March and 22 December
- B.21 June and 23 September
- C.21 June and 22 December
- D.21 March and 23 September
Show answer
On these two dates the noon sun is vertically overhead at the Equator, the circle of illumination passes through both poles, and day and night are of nearly equal length everywhere on the earth; 21 March is the spring or vernal equinox and 23 September the autumnal equinox.
Read the full explanation →The Tropic of Cancer passes through how many states of India?
- A.Six
- B.Seven
- C.Eight
- D.Nine
Show answer
From west to east the Tropic of Cancer passes through Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram, which is why the line is said to divide India almost into two halves.
Read the full explanation →Which country is crossed by both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn?
- A.Brazil
- B.Indonesia
- C.Kenya
- D.Australia
Show answer
Brazil is so large in north to south extent that the Equator crosses its northern part near the mouth of the Amazon while the Tropic of Capricorn crosses its south, close to Sao Paulo, making it the only country in the world cut by both lines.
Read the full explanation →The Equator does not pass through which of the following countries?
- A.Kenya
- B.Uganda
- C.Ethiopia
- D.Somalia
Show answer
Ethiopia lies wholly north of the Equator, roughly between 3 and 15 degrees north, and its capital Addis Ababa is about 9 degrees north, so the line misses it, although the country is tropical and highland in character.

- A.Mexico
- B.Egypt
- C.Australia
- D.Bangladesh
Show answer
The Tropic of Capricorn crosses Australia through Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, passing close to the town of Rockhampton, and Australia is the only country of Oceania on this line.
Read the full explanation →On 21 June the noon sun is vertically overhead at which latitude?
- A.The Equator
- B.The Tropic of Cancer
- C.The Tropic of Capricorn
- D.The Arctic Circle
Show answer
Because the earth's axis is tilted by about 23 and a half degrees, the northern hemisphere is turned most towards the sun on 21 June, the summer solstice, when the noon sun stands vertically above the Tropic of Cancer and the northern hemisphere has its longest day.

- A.Colombia
- B.Ecuador
- C.Peru
- D.Venezuela
Show answer
The name Ecuador is the Spanish word for the equator, the line crosses the north of the country, and its capital Quito stands only a few kilometres south of it in the Andes, which makes Quito the large capital city closest to the Equator.
Read the full explanation →The zone of the earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is called
- A.the temperate zone
- B.the torrid zone
- C.the frigid zone
- D.the subtropical zone
Show answer
It is the only belt in which the noon sun can be vertically overhead at some time of the year, so it receives the most direct insolation and has the highest average temperatures.

Which continents does the Equator pass through?
South America, Africa and Asia, if the island nations of the Pacific are counted with Oceania as a fourth. It does not touch Europe, North America, Australia or Antarctica, which is the fact most often tested in the negative form of the question.
Which Indian states lie on the Tropic of Cancer?
Eight states, from west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh do not lie on the line, although they are the usual distractors.
Is there any country through which both the Equator and the Prime Meridian pass?
No. The two lines intersect in the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean, where there is no land. The nearest country to that point is Sao Tome and Principe, which lies on the Equator but a little east of the Prime Meridian.
Why is the sun never overhead outside the tropics?
Because the earth's axis is tilted by about 23 and a half degrees from the perpendicular to its orbital plane. As the earth revolves, the vertical sun shifts only between 23 and a half degrees north and 23 and a half degrees south, which is exactly why those two parallels are drawn as the tropics.
Which capital city is closest to the Equator?
Among large capitals, Quito in Ecuador, which stands only a few kilometres south of the line in the Andes. The country itself takes its name from the Spanish word for the equator, and a monument near Quito marks the line for visitors.
