SSC Exams 2026-27: CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD and CPO Compared, with the Exam Calendar and GK Preparation
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is the Government of India's recruiting body for Group "B" and non-technical Group "C" posts in central Ministries and Departments, and it also fills Constable and Sub-Inspector posts in the Central Armed Police Forces and Delhi Police. Five of its open examinations have full guides on GK24: CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD Constable and CPO. This page sets them side by side: who can apply after 10th, 12th or graduation, the age bands, the stages, how much General Awareness counts, and the Commission's tentative calendar for 2026-27 checked against its later notices. CGL 2026 Tier-I was held to 30 October 2026, and the Commission has proposed CPO Paper-I for 23 to 28 November and CHSL Tier-I for 30 November to 31 December 2026. SSC at a glance
The Staff Selection Commission works under the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India. Its charter on ssc.gov.in is recruitment to Group "B" posts up to a set pay ceiling and to all non-technical Group "C" posts in the Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and their attached and subordinate offices, except posts specifically exempted. It also recruits for other bodies by arrangement: the Constable (GD) examination is held under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Commission. A Chairman heads the Commission, assisted by two Members. Its headquarters is at the CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

Which SSC exam should you take?
Start with your highest qualification and your age on the crucial date, then add any physical test you are ready for. Each notice sets a minimum, so a graduate who fits the age band can also sit CHSL, MTS or GD.
| Qualification | Exam | Age in years | What else it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10th pass | MTS and Havaldar | 18–25 (MTS); 18–27 (Havaldar) | Havaldar only: a timed walk and height of 157.5 cm (men) or 152 cm (women) |
| 10th pass | GD Constable | 18–23 | Race of 5 km in 24 minutes (men) or 1.6 km in 8½ minutes (women); height 170 cm or 157 cm; medical |
| 12th pass | CHSL | 18–27 | Typing test (LDC/JSA) or data-entry skill test (DEO); Science with Mathematics for DEO in three offices |
| Graduate | CGL | 18–27 to 18–32 by post | Computer Knowledge and Data Entry Speed tests; physical standards for some Inspector and Sub-Inspector posts |
| Graduate | CPO | 20–25; 18–30 for SI (Fire) | PST/PET and medical; LMV licence for men in Delhi Police |
Age, relaxation and physical standards
The crucial date for age is 1 August for CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO, and 1 January for GD. All five relax the upper limit by 5 years for SC and ST and by 3 years for OBC candidates. CGL, CHSL and MTS give PwBD candidates 10 years (13 for OBC and 15 for SC/ST). Persons with disabilities cannot apply for GD. GD and CPO add a physical test and a detailed medical examination after the written paper. The race is qualifying in both and carries no marks.
Pay and vacancies
| Exam | Pay level (7th CPC) | Tentative vacancies (latest notice) |
|---|---|---|
| MTS and Havaldar | Level-1 | 7,948 (MTS 2025, as on 27 November 2025) |
| CHSL | Level-2 (LDC/JSA); Level-4 and 5 (DEO) | About 2,536 (CHSL 2026) |
| GD Constable | Level-3 (₹21,700–69,100) | 25,487 (GD 2026) |
| CPO | Level-6 (₹35,400–1,12,400) | 1,871 (CPO 2026) |
| CGL | Level-4 to Level-8 | 10,731 (CGL 2026, tentative list of 24 September 2026; about 12,256 at notification) |
Quick picks (GK24 guidance)
- 10th pass, 18 to 23: prepare for GD and MTS together; both test General Awareness at Class 10 level.
- 12th pass, up to 27: make CHSL the main exam and add MTS or GD if your age fits.
- Graduate, 20 to 25 and fit: pair CGL with CPO; CGL Tier-I and CPO Paper-I test the same four subjects.
- Graduate over 25: CGL, with bands up to 27, 30 or 32 by post, and CHSL up to 27.
How SSC exams are structured
- Application. Every application goes through One Time Registration (OTR) on ssc.gov.in or the mySSC app. The fee is ₹100; women, SC, ST and Ex-Servicemen pay none, and PwBD candidates too in CGL, CHSL and MTS. Multiple applications for one exam are all rejected.
- Computer Based Examination. Every written paper is an objective multiple-choice test on a computer. CGL and CPO are set in English and Hindi; CHSL, MTS and GD also in 13 regional languages. English language parts are in English only.
- Normalisation. Marks of papers held in several shifts are normalised by the procedure the Commission published on 2 June 2025.
- Qualifying marks. 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS and 20% for others, in each tier or paper.
- Answer keys. Tentative keys go online after each exam. A challenge costs ₹100 per question in CGL and MTS and ₹50 in CHSL, GD and CPO.
- Skill and physical tests. They are qualifying everywhere: CGL's Data Entry Speed Test, CHSL's skill or typing test, and the PET/PST of GD, CPO and Havaldar.
What decides the final merit
| Exam | Merit is based on |
|---|---|
| CGL | Tier-II only (Sections I and II of Paper-I for most posts); Tier-I is screening |
| CHSL | Tier-II Sections I and II (360 marks); Tier-I is screening |
| MTS | Session-II (150 marks); Session-I is qualifying |
| GD | CBE score plus NCC bonus |
| CPO | Paper-II (320 marks) plus NCC bonus; Paper-I is screening |
The NCC bonus in GD and CPO is 5%, 3% or 2% of the maximum marks for a 'C', 'B' or 'A' certificate.
Negative marking
| Exam | Paper | Marks per question | Deduction per wrong answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGL | Tier-I | 2 | 0.50 |
| CGL | Tier-II Paper-I, Sections I to III | 3 | 1 |
| CHSL | Tier-I | 2 | 0.50 |
| CHSL | Tier-II, Sections I to III | 3 | 1 |
| MTS | Session-I | 3 | None |
| MTS | Session-II | 3 | 1 |
| GD | CBE | 2 | 0.25 |
| CPO | Paper-I | 1 | 0.25 |
| CPO | Paper-II | 2 | 0.50 |
A blank costs nothing in any of them. CGL and CHSL Tier-I and CPO Paper-I give each section a 15-minute timer. MTS runs two 45-minute sessions. GD gives 60 minutes for 80 questions.
SSC exam calendar 2026-27
The Commission published its Tentative Calendar of Examinations for 2026-27 on 8 January 2026. No revised calendar had appeared on its notice board by 2 November 2026. The calendar gives months, not dates, and marks every exam as tentative. A later notice of the Commission overrides it, and the last column says what each notice fixed.
| Exam (stage) | Notice (calendar) | Applications close (calendar) | Exam window (calendar, tentative) | Position on 2 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CGL 2026 (Tier-I) | March 2026 | April 2026 | May–June 2026 | Notice published on 21 May 2026, showing Tier-I in August–September. The notice of 12 September 2026 fixed Tier-I for 30 September to 30 October 2026, and that stage has been held. Tier-II tentatively in December 2026, with no date announced |
| CHSL 2026 (Tier-I) | April 2026 | May 2026 | July–September 2026 | Notice published on 7 September 2026. Applications closed on 7 October 2026. The notice of 1 October 2026 proposed Tier-I for 30 November to 31 December 2026; Tier-II still to be notified |
| MTS and Havaldar 2026 (CBE) | June 2026 | July 2026 | September–November 2026 | Notice not yet published |
| CPO 2026 (Paper-I) | May 2026 | June 2026 | October–November 2026 | Notice published on 10 September 2026. Applications closed on 30 September 2026. The notice of 1 October 2026 proposed the CBE for 20 to 28 November 2026, and the corrigendum of 26 October 2026 revised it to 23 to 28 November 2026 |
| GD Constable 2027 (CBE) | September 2026 | October 2026 | January–March 2027 | Notice not yet published |
The notices published so far came later than the calendar said: CGL by about two months, CPO by about four and CHSL by about five. So the calendar's CHSL window of July to September 2026 passed without a Tier-I date, and the Commission's Important Notice of 1 October 2026 has now proposed Tier-I for 30 November to 31 December 2026 and the CPO CBE for 20 to 28 November 2026, which its corrigendum of 26 October 2026 revised to 23 to 28 November 2026, within the calendar's October-November window. Until the MTS 2026 and GD 2027 notices appear, the calendar is the only guide to them.
Cycles already held
- GD Constable 2026: the CBE was held from 27 April to 31 May 2026, as the Commission's notice of 15 June 2026 records. Its notice of 2 January 2026 had tentatively named 23 February 2026. The Commission declared the CBE result on 12 October 2026, provisionally shortlisting candidates for the PET/PST the CAPFs will conduct; no date for that stage has been announced.
- MTS and Havaldar 2025: the CBE was held from 4 to 20 February 2026, and CBIC set the Havaldar PET/PST for 24 to 31 August 2026. The first round of allocation had not been declared by 2 November 2026.
Among the five, CGL 2026 Tier-I was held to 30 October 2026; next is the CPO Paper-I window of 23 to 28 November 2026, revised by the corrigendum of 26 October 2026, and then the CHSL Tier-I window of 30 November to 31 December 2026 proposed by the notice of 1 October 2026. Admission certificates come two or three days before each exam date.
General Awareness in SSC exams
General Awareness is the one subject all five exams share, and the notices describe it in almost the same words.
| Exam | Section | What the notice lists | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGL | General Awareness | Environment around the candidate; current events; everyday science; India and its neighbours in History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy and Scientific Research | Graduation (Tier-I) |
| CHSL | General Awareness | The same list as CGL | 10+2 level exam |
| CPO | General Knowledge and General Awareness | The same list, with General Polity and the Indian Constitution | Graduate exam; Paper-II harder than Paper-I |
| GD | General Knowledge and General Awareness | The same heads, naming Sports, General Polity and the Indian Constitution | Matriculation |
| MTS | General Awareness | Social Studies (History, Geography, Art and Culture, Civics, Economics), General Science, Environmental Studies | Up to 10th Standard |
Read together, the lists come down to eight areas: current events, History, Culture, Geography, the Economy, Polity and the Constitution, everyday Science, and Environment and Sports for MTS and GD. What changes between exams is the level.
Where each area is on GK24 (GK24 guidance)
| Area in the notices | What to use on GK24 |
|---|---|
| Current events | Daily current affairs in English and Hindi from official releases; SSC's daily, weekly and monthly quizzes |
| History | Indian History notes |
| Culture | Art and Culture notes |
| Geography | Geography notes |
| Economic Scene | Indian Economy notes |
| General Policy, Polity, Civics | Indian Polity notes |
| Everyday science, Scientific Research | General Science notes |
| Environmental Studies (MTS) | Environment and Ecology notes |
| Sports (GD) and event-linked facts | Sports, Awards and Honours, Books and Authors, Days and Dates notes |
| Computer Knowledge Test (CGL, CHSL Tier-II) | Computer notes |
Each exam's own page adds its previous-year questions, tagged with the paper they came from. In GK24's reading of past SSC papers, static GK fills most questions, led by Polity, History, Geography, the Economy and Science. Current affairs come mostly from the 6 to 12 months before the exam, often tied to a static fact.
How to prepare for SSC with GK24
This plan is GK24's guidance, not part of any notice. It gives General Awareness about an hour a day beside Mathematics, Reasoning and English.
| Day | Static GK (35 minutes) | Current affairs and practice (25 minutes) |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | One Indian Polity topic | Today's current affairs; last week's SSC weekly quiz |
| Tuesday | One Indian History topic | Today's current affairs; SSC daily quiz |
| Wednesday | One Geography topic | Today's current affairs; SSC daily quiz |
| Thursday | One Indian Economy topic | Today's current affairs; SSC daily quiz |
| Friday | One General Science topic | Today's current affairs; SSC daily quiz |
| Saturday | Art and Culture, Environment or Sports | Previous-year questions of your exam |
| Sunday | Revise the week's notes | A timed 25-question set; the monthly quiz in a month's first week |
Adjust the plan to your exam
- MTS and GD: read at Class 10 depth and add Sports for GD. Aim for GD's 20 GK questions in about 10 minutes and MTS's 25 in about 20.
- CHSL: add a Computer note each week for Tier-II, and start typing practice early.
- CGL: General Awareness carries 75 Tier-II marks that count in the final merit. Audit and Accounts Officer aspirants add finance topics for Paper-III.
- CPO: General Awareness now counts in Paper-II too. Train for the PET from the day you apply.
Rules for every SSC exam
- Cover the 12 months of current affairs before your exam and revise each month when it ends.
- Practise under the real timer: 25 questions in 15 minutes for CGL, CHSL and CPO.
- Leave what you do not know; a wrong answer costs up to 1 mark, a blank nothing.
- Trust a date only once the Commission's notice fixes it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which SSC exam can a 12th-pass candidate take?
CHSL is the SSC exam built for 12th-pass candidates. It fills Lower Division Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant and Data Entry Operator posts, and the age band is 18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026; CHSL 2026 applications close on 7 October 2026. A 12th-pass candidate can also sit MTS (18–25 years in the 2025 notice) and GD Constable (18–23 years in the 2026 notice), which need only 10th pass. CGL and CPO need a Bachelor's degree.
Which SSC exams can a 10th-pass candidate apply for?
Two of the five: MTS and Havaldar, for Multi-Tasking Staff posts in central offices and Havaldar in CBIC and CBN (18–25 or 18–27 years in the 2025 notice), and GD Constable, for Constable (GD) in the CAPFs and SSF and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles (18–23 years in the 2026 notice). GD adds a race, physical measurements and a medical examination. The MTS 2026 and GD 2027 notices had not been published by 19 October 2026.
Is there negative marking in SSC exams?
Yes, in every one of the five, but the deduction differs. CGL and CHSL deduct 0.50 mark per wrong answer in Tier-I and 1 mark in Tier-II. MTS has no negative marking in Session-I and deducts 1 mark in Session-II. GD deducts 0.25 mark. CPO deducts 0.25 mark in Paper-I and 0.50 mark in Paper-II. An unanswered question costs nothing.
How many attempts are allowed in SSC exams?
None of the five notices limits the number of attempts. A candidate can apply in every cycle as long as he or she meets the qualification and the age limit, with any relaxation, on that cycle's crucial date. Within one cycle only one application is allowed: if more than one application of a candidate with different registration numbers is found, all of them are rejected.
Is the General Awareness syllabus the same in all SSC exams?
Almost. The CGL, CHSL and CPO notices use the same wording: current events, everyday science, and India and its neighbouring countries in History, Culture, Geography, the Economic Scene, General Policy and Scientific Research. The GD notice names Sports, General Polity and the Indian Constitution as well. The MTS notice lists Social Studies, General Science and Environmental Studies up to the 10th Standard. The topics overlap; the level rises from Class 10 in MTS and GD to graduation in CGL and CPO.
When is the next SSC exam?
The CPO 2026 CBE, proposed for 23 to 28 November 2026 by the Commission's corrigendum of 26 October 2026, which revised the 20 to 28 November window of its Important Notice of 1 October 2026; CHSL 2026 Tier-I follows, proposed by that same notice for 30 November to 31 December 2026. The Commission calls both windows proposed, so they can change. CGL 2026 Tier-I was held from 30 September to 30 October 2026, as fixed by the notice of 12 September 2026. The MTS 2026 and GD 2027 notices are awaited; the tentative calendar of 8 January 2026 shows their exams in September–November 2026 and January–March 2027.
Which SSC exams have a physical test?
GD Constable and CPO, both for uniformed posts, have a Physical Efficiency or Endurance Test, a Physical Standard Test and a detailed medical examination. In MTS only Havaldar candidates take a walking test and measurements. CGL has physical and medical standards only for some posts, such as Inspector in CBIC and Sub-Inspector in CBI, NIA, NCB and CBN. CHSL has none. All physical tests are qualifying and carry no marks.
