UPSC Exams 2026–27: Civil Services, CAPF, NDA and CDS Compared, with the 2027 Calendar and Preparation
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the Public Service Commission for the Union provided for in Article 315 of the Constitution. GK24 covers four of its exams: the Civil Services Examination for the IAS, IFS, IPS and 20 other services; the CAPF (Assistant Commandants) Examination for officers of the armed police; and the NDA & NA and CDS examinations for the armed forces, which GK24 lists under Defence. Each has a general studies or general knowledge paper with one-third negative marking. This page compares the four by qualification, age, stages and GK share, gives the 2027 dates from UPSC's own programme, and sets out a weekly plan built on GK24's daily current affairs, GK notes, quizzes and previous-year questions.

UPSC at a glance
The Union Public Service Commission is the Commission for the Union under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. UPSC's own page on its constitutional provisions lists Articles 315 to 323. Together they say how the Commission is formed, how its members serve and what it does.
| Article | Subject, as UPSC lists it |
|---|---|
| 315 | Public Service Commissions for the Union and for the States |
| 316 | Appointment and term of office of members |
| 317 | Removal and suspension of a member of a Public Service Commission |
| 318 | Power to make regulations as to conditions of service of members and staff of the Commission |
| 319 | Prohibition as to the holding of offices by members of Commission on ceasing to be such members |
| 320 | Functions of Public Service Commissions |
| 321 | Power to extend functions of Public Service Commissions |
| 322 | Expenses of Public Service Commissions |
| 323 | Reports of Public Service Commissions |
Each exam runs under rules notified by the ministry whose posts it fills: the Department of Personnel and Training for CSE, the Ministry of Home Affairs for CAPF, and the Ministry of Defence for NDA & NA and CDS. All four use one application portal, upsconline.nic.in, and one Universal Registration Number (URN), registered once in a lifetime for all the Commission's exams.
On GK24, Civil Services and CAPF (AC) sit under UPSC. NDA & NA and CDS, also conducted by UPSC, lead to the armed forces and sit under Defence. The figures below are from each exam's latest notice: CSE 2026, CAPF (ACs) 2026, NDA & NA (II) 2026 and CDS (II) 2026.
| Exam | Posts or courses | Minimum qualification | Age band (2026 notice) | Stages | General Studies / GK share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Civil Services Examination (CSE) | IAS, IFS, IPS and 20 other services, 23 in all | Graduate degree | 21 to 32 on 1 August 2026, plus relaxations | Prelims, Mains (written), Interview/Personality Test | GS Paper-I (200 marks) decides the Prelims cut-off; four GS papers carry 1,000 of 1,750 Mains marks |
| CAPF (Assistant Commandants) | Assistant Commandant (Group A) in the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB | Bachelor's degree | 20 to 25 on 1 August 2026, plus relaxations | Written (two papers), PST/PET, interview, medical tests | Paper-I (250 of 450 written marks); five of its six areas are GK |
| NDA & NA | National Defence Academy (Army, Navy and Air Force wings); Indian Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry) | Class 12 (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for the naval and air wings and the Naval Academy) | Born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011; unmarried | Written (two papers), SSB, medical | General Knowledge: 400 of 900 written marks |
| CDS | IMA, INA, AFA and OTA (SSC Men and Women) | Degree, with subject conditions for INA and AFA | 19–24 (IMA, INA), 20–24 (AFA), 19–25 (OTA); unmarried | Written (three papers; two for OTA), SSB, medical | General Knowledge: 100 of 300 written marks (OTA: 100 of 200) |
UPSC's 2027 programme also lists exams GK24 does not cover, such as the Engineering Services and Combined Medical Services examinations. The Indian Forest Service Prelims is held through the Civil Services Prelims.
Which UPSC exam should you take?
Your qualification narrows the choice first. Then comes your age, and then the career you want. The table applies the 2026 notices.
| Where you stand | Exam open to you | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|
| In Class 12 or passed it, unmarried | NDA & NA | A commission in the Army, Navy or Air Force after training at NDA and a service academy, or at the Naval Academy |
| Graduate or final-year student, unmarried, 19 to 25 | CDS | Officer training at IMA, INA or AFA, or a Short Service Commission through OTA |
| Graduate or final-year student, 20 to 25, meeting the physical standards | CAPF (AC) | Assistant Commandant, a Group A officer, in one of five Central Armed Police Forces |
| Graduate or final-year student, 21 to 32, or older with a relaxation | CSE | The IAS, IFS, IPS or another of the 23 services |
- Civil services: CSE is the only one of the four that leads to the IAS, IFS and IPS. Its three stages take about a year, and it limits attempts: 6 for General and EWS candidates, 9 for OBC, and unlimited for SC and ST within the age limit.
- Armed police: CAPF (AC) recruits officers for the five Central Armed Police Forces and adds physical tests. A man needs a height of 165 cm and must run 100 metres in 16 seconds; a woman needs 157 cm and 18 seconds.
- Armed forces: NDA & NA takes candidates straight after school, and CDS takes graduates. Both are held twice a year. In both, the SSB interview carries as many marks as the written exam.
Women can sit all four, with limits. CAPF (AC) is open to men and women alike. In NDA & NA (II) 2026, 24 of the 394 vacancies were for women. In CDS, women apply only for OTA's SSC (Women) course, which had 18 vacancies in CDS (II) 2026.
GK24 guidance: the age bands overlap, so many graduates aged about 21 to 24 can sit CSE, CAPF and CDS in the same year. The 2027 dates do not clash: CDS (I) on 11 April, the CSE Prelims on 23 May, CAPF on 4 July and CDS (II) on 19 September. One general studies preparation serves all three written exams.
How UPSC exams are structured
The four exams differ in length, but the Commission runs them on the same lines. Every objective paper has four options per question. A wrong answer costs one-third of that question's marks, two marked answers count as wrong, and a blank costs nothing. Descriptive papers appear only in the CSE Mains and CAPF Paper-II. The personality stage is the Commission's own interview for CSE and CAPF, and the SSB of the armed forces' selection boards for NDA & NA and CDS.
| Feature | CSE | CAPF (AC) | NDA & NA | CDS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Objective papers | Prelims: GS Paper-I (100 questions) and CSAT (80, qualifying at 33%), 200 marks each | Paper-I (125 questions in 2026, 250 marks) | Mathematics (120 questions, 300 marks), General Ability Test (150, 600 marks) | English and GK (120 questions each), Elementary Mathematics (100), 100 marks each; OTA takes two |
| Penalty per wrong answer | 0.67 mark in Paper-I; about 0.83 in Paper-II | 0.67 mark | About 0.83 in Mathematics; about 1.33 in the General Ability Test | About 0.28 in English and General Knowledge; 0.33 in Mathematics |
| Descriptive papers | Mains: 2 qualifying and 7 merit papers (1,750 marks) | Paper-II (200 marks) | None | None |
| Interview | Personality Test, 275 marks | Interview/Personality Test, 150 marks | SSB, 900 marks | SSB, 300 marks (200 for OTA) |
| Physical and medical | Physical standards (Appendix-III of the Rules) | PST/PET (qualifying) and Medical Standards Tests | Medical examination after the SSB | Medical examination after the SSB |
| Final merit | 2,025 marks (Mains 1,750 + interview 275) | 600 marks (written 450 + interview 150) | 1,800 marks (written 900 + SSB 900) | 600 marks (400 for OTA) |
The CSE Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit. The PST/PET and the medical tests are qualifying only. In every exam an application cannot be withdrawn or corrected once submitted, and representations on questions are taken online from the third day after the exam to 6:00 PM on the seventh day.
Language matters for Hindi-medium candidates. The objective general studies and general knowledge papers of all four exams are printed in Hindi as well as English. CSE Mains Papers I to VII may be answered in English or in any Eighth Schedule language. The CAPF essay may be written in Hindi, but the rest of its Paper-II is in English only.

Where the 2026 cycle stands
As on 29 October 2026, going by the Commission's notices and press notes:
| Exam | Written exam | Status |
|---|---|---|
| CSE 2026 | Prelims on 24 May 2026; Mains on 21 to 23 and 29 to 30 August 2026 | 13,343 cleared the Prelims (result of 15 June 2026); Mains result and interview dates not yet announced |

General Studies and current affairs in UPSC exams
Each notice gives its general knowledge syllabus in a few lines. Set side by side, the same six areas recur.
| Area | CSE Prelims, GS Paper-I | CAPF, Paper-I | NDA & NA, GAT Part B | CDS, General Knowledge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current events | Of national and international importance | National and international, including culture, sports and governance | Section F, about 10% | Named in the notice |
| History | History of India and the Indian National Movement | History of India, including the freedom movement | Section D, about 20%, with the Constitution and world history | Named in the notice |
| Geography | Indian and World Geography | Indian and World Geography | Section E, about 20% | Named in the notice |
| Polity | Indian Polity and Governance | Indian Polity and Economy | Part of Section D | Not named; about 20 of 120 questions in the 2026 paper |
| Economy | Economic and Social Development | Indian Polity and Economy | Five Year Plans, in Section D | Not named; about 10 questions in the 2026 paper |
| Science and environment | General Science; Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change | General Science, including IT, biotechnology and environmental science | Physics 25%, Chemistry 15%, General Science 10% | Everyday science; about 37 questions in the 2026 paper |
The CDS question counts are GK24's reading of the CDS (II) 2026 paper, not an official break-up. The NDA weightages are the notice's approximate figures.
What recurs, as GK24 reads the papers:
- CSE rarely asks current affairs as a bare fact. A Ramsar site, a scheme or a Supreme Court judgment in the news becomes a question on geography, polity, the economy or environment.
- Polity and modern history carry weight in every paper, from the CSE Prelims to CDS.
- Science decides NDA. Physics, Chemistry and General Science carry about half of Part B.
- Security and human rights appear in both CAPF papers.
How GK24 maps to it (GK24 guidance):
| What the notices ask | Where it is on GK24 |
|---|---|
| Current events | Daily current affairs in English and Hindi from official Government of India releases; exam-wise daily, weekly and monthly quizzes |
| Polity, history, geography, economy | GK notes, topic by topic: Indian Polity, Indian History, Art and Culture, Geography, Indian Economy |
| Science and environment | GK notes on General Science, Environment and Ecology, and Computer |
| Awards, sports, books, days | GK notes on Awards and Honours, Sports, Books and Authors, and Days and Dates |
| How UPSC frames questions | Previous-year questions of CSE, CAPF, NDA and CDS, tagged by topic; a topic quiz with every GK note |
GK24 does not cover CSAT, Mathematics, English or the CSE optional subjects. Plan those separately.
How to prepare for UPSC exams with GK24
This plan is GK24 guidance, not part of any notice. It assumes two to three hours a day for general studies.
| Day | General studies task |
|---|---|
| Every day | Read the day's current affairs in 30 minutes, take the day's quiz, and note the static topic behind each item |
| Monday | Indian Polity: one GK note, its topic quiz and its previous-year questions |
| Tuesday | Indian History, or Art and Culture: one note, its quiz and its PYQs |
| Wednesday | Geography, with a blank map of India beside you |
| Thursday | Indian Economy, or Environment and Ecology |
| Friday | General Science: one note and its quiz |
| Saturday | The weekly current-affairs quiz, then a timed mixed test under your exam's negative marking |
| Sunday | Revise the week's notes and your list of wrong answers |
Add what your exam alone needs:
- CSE: an hour a week of CSAT, because 33% in Paper-II is compulsory; Mains answer writing once the Prelims base is in place.
- CAPF (AC): one 300-word essay, one for-and-against answer and one précis every week; running practice for the PET.
- NDA & NA: Mathematics most days, since it carries 300 marks; Physics numericals; English for Part A.
- CDS: English for every academy and Elementary Mathematics for IMA, INA and AFA; SSB preparation alongside.
Work back from your exam date. From 24 September 2026, NDA & NA (I) and CDS (I) on 11 April 2027 are about 28 weeks away. The CSE Prelims on 23 May 2027 are about 34 weeks away, and CAPF on 4 July 2027 about 40. Cover at least 12 months of current affairs for CSE and CAPF, and 6 to 10 months for NDA and CDS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which UPSC exams does GK24 cover?
Four. The Civil Services Examination (CSE) and the Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination sit under UPSC on GK24. The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (NDA & NA) and the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS) are also held by UPSC, but GK24 lists them under Defence because they lead to the armed forces. Each exam has its own detailed guide on GK24.
Which UPSC exam can I take after Class 12?
NDA & NA is the only one of the four open to Class 12 students. For NDA & NA (II) 2026 a candidate had to be unmarried and born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12 are needed for the Air Force and Naval wings and the Naval Academy. CSE, CAPF and CDS need a degree, though final-year students may apply.
Is there negative marking in every UPSC exam?
In every objective paper, yes. One-third of the question's marks is deducted for a wrong answer in both CSE Prelims papers, CAPF Paper-I and all the NDA & NA and CDS papers. Marking more than one answer counts as wrong, and a blank carries no penalty. The descriptive papers, the CSE Mains and CAPF Paper-II, have no negative marking.
When are the UPSC exams in 2027?
As per the UPSC Programme of Examinations 2027 (as on 20 May 2026): NDA & NA (I) and CDS (I) on 11 April 2027, the Civil Services Prelims on 23 May 2027, CAPF (ACs) on 4 July 2027, the Civil Services Mains from 20 August 2027, and NDA & NA (II) and CDS (II) on 19 September 2027. The programme says the dates may be altered if circumstances warrant.
What is the age limit for UPSC exams?
It differs by exam. As per the 2026 notices, CSE takes candidates aged 21 to 32 on 1 August 2026, and CAPF (AC) those aged 20 to 25 on the same date; both allow category relaxations. NDA & NA (II) 2026 took candidates born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011. CDS takes 19 to 24 for IMA and INA, 20 to 24 for AFA and 19 to 25 for OTA; its only relaxation is for AFA candidates holding a commercial pilot licence.
Can I take UPSC exams in Hindi?
The general studies papers, yes. The CSE Prelims papers are set in Hindi and English, and Mains Papers I to VII may be answered in any Eighth Schedule language. CAPF Paper-I is printed in English and Hindi, and its essay may be written in Hindi, but the rest of Paper-II is in English only. The NDA & NA Mathematics and General Knowledge sections and the CDS General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics papers are bilingual; their English papers are in English.
Can one preparation serve CSE, CAPF and CDS?
For general studies, largely yes; this is GK24 guidance. Current events, Indian history, geography, polity, the economy and general science appear in all three syllabi, and the 2027 exam dates do not clash. What differs is the rest: CSAT and the Mains for CSE, the descriptive Paper-II and the physical tests for CAPF, and English, Elementary Mathematics and the SSB for CDS.
