An industrial corridor is a planned belt of manufacturing laid along a high-capacity transport spine, usually a dedicated freight railway, an expressway or a major port. The idea is simple: instead of letting factories appear wherever land happens to be cheap, the state first builds the trunk line and then develops industrial cities, called nodes, at intervals along it, each with its own power, water, roads, waste treatment and ready plots. Freight then moves cheaply along the spine, and the cost of doing business falls for every unit in the belt. India's industrial corridor programme is run as the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme through the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, which works under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
What makes a corridor different from an industrial estate
A corridor is not a single park. It covers an influence zone stretching for a hundred and fifty to two hundred kilometres on either side of the spine, crosses several states and takes decades to fill. A node inside it is a greenfield industrial city with plug-and-play infrastructure, a trunk water supply, a captive power arrangement, a common effluent treatment plant, a logistics park and often a railway siding. The economics of a corridor rests on multimodal connectivity: the node must reach a port, an airport and a freight railway at low cost, which is why the corridors are aligned to the dedicated freight corridors and why the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan of 2021 was created to map all such infrastructure on one platform.
The Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor
The Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, the first and largest of the programme, was conceived in 2006 and is being developed with Japanese cooperation. It is aligned along the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, which runs about fifteen hundred kilometres from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai. The corridor passes through six states, namely Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, besides the National Capital Territory of Delhi, and about forty per cent of its length lies in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
| Node | State |
|---|---|
| Dholera Special Investment Region | Gujarat |
| Shendra-Bidkin Industrial Park, part of AURIC near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | Maharashtra |
| Integrated Industrial Township, Greater Noida | Uttar Pradesh |
| Vikram Udyogpuri, near Ujjain | Madhya Pradesh |
| Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana Investment Region | Rajasthan |
| Jodhpur-Pali-Marwar Industrial Area | Rajasthan |
| Manesar-Bawal Investment Region | Haryana |
| Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow Investment Region | Madhya Pradesh |
| Dighi Port Industrial Area | Maharashtra |
The other corridors
The Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor follows the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, which runs about thirteen hundred kilometres from the Ludhiana region to Sonnagar in Bihar, and its influence zone covers Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal; integrated manufacturing clusters are the form its nodes take. The Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, also developed with Japanese support, has its nodes at Ponneri in Tamil Nadu, Tumakuru in Karnataka and Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The Bengaluru Mumbai Economic Corridor, taken up with United Kingdom cooperation, has nodes at Dharwad in Karnataka and Satara in Maharashtra. The Visakhapatnam Chennai Industrial Corridor, supported by the Asian Development Bank, is the first phase of the East Coast Economic Corridor, India's first coastal economic corridor, planned from Kolkata to Kanyakumari; its nodes are at Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Donakonda and Srikalahasti-Chittoor. Corridors have also been taken up on the Hyderabad Nagpur, Hyderabad Warangal and Hyderabad Bengaluru alignments, and as the Odisha Economic Corridor. In August 2024 the Union Cabinet approved twelve new greenfield industrial cities under the programme, spread over ten states, among them Khurpia in Uttarakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh, Palakkad in Kerala, Dighi in Maharashtra and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan.
Why corridors matter to the economy
Manufacturing has long contributed a smaller share of India's output than services, and the corridor programme is one of the instruments meant to change that, alongside the Make in India initiative, the production linked incentive schemes and the National Logistics Policy. The reasoning is that India's logistics cost, measured as a share of the value of goods, is higher than in the competing manufacturing economies of East Asia, and that most of that gap comes from the heavy use of road freight, from delays at ports and from factories sited far from any trunk line. A corridor attacks all three at once. It also spreads industry inland: Dholera, Vikram Udyogpuri and Jodhpur-Pali lie far from the coast, and the freight corridor is what makes them viable. The risks are equally plain. Land acquisition is slow and contested, a node fills only if anchor investors commit early, and a half-built node leaves the state with sunk costs and no revenue, which is why the programme's nodes are released in phases and offered on long lease rather than sale.
Exam Point of View
Questions on this topic are almost always about pairing. The commonest is a node with its state, so learn Dholera with Gujarat, AURIC and Dighi with Maharashtra, Vikram Udyogpuri and Pithampur with Madhya Pradesh, Khushkhera-Bhiwadi-Neemrana and Jodhpur-Pali with Rajasthan, Manesar-Bawal with Haryana and Greater Noida with Uttar Pradesh. The second favourite is the development partner: Japan for Delhi Mumbai and Chennai Bengaluru, the United Kingdom for Bengaluru Mumbai, the Asian Development Bank for Visakhapatnam Chennai. A third asks for the number of states a corridor crosses, where six for the DMIC and seven for the Amritsar Kolkata corridor are the figures to keep apart. Also remember that the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor ends at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and that the nodal ministry is Commerce and Industry, not Railways.

What is an industrial corridor?
It is a planned belt of manufacturing developed along a high-capacity transport spine, usually a dedicated freight railway, an expressway or a port. Industrial cities called nodes are built at intervals along the spine, each with ready plots, power, water, roads and effluent treatment, so that a factory can start quickly and move its freight cheaply. The corridor's influence zone extends about a hundred and fifty to two hundred kilometres on either side.
Which was India's first industrial corridor?
The Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, conceived in 2006 and taken up with Japanese cooperation, is the first and the largest. It is aligned to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, which runs about fifteen hundred kilometres from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai, and it passes through six states besides the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
How is an industrial corridor different from a special economic zone?
A special economic zone is a single demarcated enclave treated as foreign territory for trade purposes, with its own customs and tax rules, and it is usually a few hundred hectares in size. An industrial corridor is a planning region hundreds of kilometres long, covering several states, within which many industrial cities are built. A corridor offers connectivity and serviced land rather than a separate customs regime.
Which corridor is India's first coastal economic corridor?
The East Coast Economic Corridor, planned along the eastern seaboard from Kolkata to Kanyakumari. Its first phase is the Visakhapatnam Chennai Industrial Corridor, developed with the support of the Asian Development Bank, which has nodes at Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Donakonda and Srikalahasti-Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh.
Why does India need industrial corridors at all?
Because logistics cost, as a share of the value of goods moved, is higher in India than in the competing manufacturing economies of East Asia. Most of that gap comes from the heavy use of road freight, delays at ports, and factories sited far from any trunk line. A corridor addresses all three by putting serviced industrial land next to a freight railway with a direct run to a port, and it also carries industry inland to places such as Dholera, Ujjain and Jodhpur.
