International Sports Awards: Laureus and Ballon d’Or — GK24 title card

Every sport has a prize that its players treat as the summit, and a General Awareness paper asks for the founding year, the first winner, the body that gives it and the name of its trophy. The two the syllabus names are the Laureus World Sports Awards, which cover every sport, and the Ballon d’Or, which belongs to football. This note sets out their history and their categories, adds the other international sports awards that papers ask with them, and keeps to facts that do not change with the latest ceremony.

Laureus World Sports Awards

The Laureus World Sports Awards were established in 1999 by the founders of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and the first ceremony was held in 2000 at Monte Carlo in Monaco. Nelson Mandela, the patron of the awards, spoke at that first ceremony and said that sport has the power to change the world, a line that is now quoted with the awards themselves. The name comes from the laurel wreath of the ancient games, and because the ceremony honours every sport together, it is often called the Oscars of sport.

Nominations are made by sports journalists across the world, and the winners are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, a body of retired champions from many sports. Money raised by the awards goes to sport projects for children, which is the purpose the foundation was set up for.

  • World Sportsman of the Year and World Sportswoman of the Year
  • World Team of the Year
  • World Breakthrough of the Year, for a first great season
  • World Comeback of the Year, after injury or absence
  • World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability
  • World Action Sportsperson of the Year
  • Laureus Sport for Good Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Best Sporting Moment, voted for by the public

Pele received the first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. The Indian success best known at these awards is Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Best Sporting Moment award in 2020 for the lap of honour on his teammates’ shoulders after India won the World Cup of 2011.

The Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or, the golden ball, was created in 1956 by the French magazine France Football on the idea of its editor Gabriel Hanot, and it is given to the footballer judged the best of the year on the votes of journalists. Its history has three stages, and examiners ask for them:

  • 1956 to 1994 - open only to European players. The first winner was Stanley Matthews of England, then with Blackpool, in 1956.
  • 1995 - opened to players of any nationality at European clubs, and George Weah of Liberia, then with AC Milan, became the first winner from outside Europe.
  • 2007 - opened to players at clubs anywhere in the world.

From 2010 to 2015 the award was merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year and given as the FIFA Ballon d’Or; the two separated again in 2016, so a question on the years 2010 to 2015 has FIFA in the answer. Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union, who won in 1963, is the only goalkeeper ever to have taken the Ballon d’Or, which is why the trophy for the best goalkeeper is named after him. Kaka of Brazil won in 2007, the last winner before Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo shared every award from 2008 to 2017 between them.

Four trophies are now given at the same ceremony:

TrophyGiven forFromFirst winner
Ballon d’Or FemininThe best woman footballer of the year2018Ada Hegerberg of Norway
Kopa TrophyThe best young player, named after Raymond Kopa2018Kylian Mbappe of France
Yashin TrophyThe best goalkeeper, named after Lev Yashin2019Alisson Becker of Brazil
Gerd Muller TrophyThe leading goalscorer of the season2021Robert Lewandowski of Poland

The other international sports awards

  • FIFA World Player of the Year - given from 1991 to 2015; the first winner was Lothar Matthaus of Germany. Since 2016 FIFA gives The Best FIFA Men’s Player and The Best FIFA Women’s Player.
  • FIFA Puskas Award - from 2009, for the most beautiful goal of the year, named after Ferenc Puskas of Hungary.
  • European Golden Shoe - from 1968, to the leading scorer in the European league season.
  • ICC Awards - instituted in 2004. The ICC Cricketer of the Year receives the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, and the first winner was Rahul Dravid of India. The award for the women’s cricketer of the year is the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award, given from 2017.
  • Wisden Cricketers of the Year - chosen since 1889 by the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, the oldest award in cricket.
  • Olympic Order - instituted by the International Olympic Committee in 1975 for service to the Olympic movement, while the Pierre de Coubertin Medal goes to an athlete for an act of sportsmanship.
  • Arthur Ashe Courage Award - given at the ESPY awards for courage shown beyond the field of play.

How to prepare this topic

Learn each award as four facts: the year it began, the body that gives it, the first winner and the trophy or the name attached to it. Those four cover almost every question. Then keep three contrasts ready, because they are where options are built: Laureus began in 1999 with the first ceremony in 2000; the Ballon d’Or began in 1956 and carried the FIFA name only from 2010 to 2015; and the Kopa, Yashin and Gerd Muller trophies are all newer than 2015, so a question on an award of the 1950s or 1960s will not have them in the answer.

Exam Point of View

Four kinds of question come from this topic. First the founding year, where Laureus is set in 1999 with the first ceremony in 2000 and the Ballon d’Or in 1956; papers place the two Laureus years against each other. Second the first winner, so hold Stanley Matthews for the Ballon d’Or, Pele for the Laureus Lifetime Achievement, Ada Hegerberg for the women’s Ballon d’Or, Kylian Mbappe for the Kopa Trophy, Alisson Becker for the Yashin Trophy, Lothar Matthaus for the FIFA World Player of the Year and Rahul Dravid for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. Third the name behind a trophy: Yashin the only goalkeeping winner, Kopa the winner of 1958, Gerd Muller the scorer, Puskas for the finest goal. Fourth the Indian link, which is Sachin Tendulkar in 2020. Avoid questions on the latest winners unless you have followed the ceremony.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Awards & HonoursMedium

The first Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in the year

  1. A.

    1996

  2. B.

    1999

  3. C.

    2000

  4. D.

    2004

Show answer

Correct answer: C.

2000

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 2000. The awards were established in 1999 by the founders of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and the first ceremony took place in 2000 at Monte Carlo in Monaco, where Nelson Mandela, the patron of the awards, said that sport has the power to change the world. Option A is wrong because 1996 is the year of the Atlanta Olympic Games and has nothing to do with these awards. Option B is wrong because 1999 is the year the awards were set up, which is the trap this question is built on: the setting up and the first ceremony fall in different years, and papers use one against the other. Option D is wrong because 2004 is the year the International Cricket Council began its own annual awards, including the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

Q2.Awards & HonoursMedium

Who was the patron of the Laureus World Sports Awards who spoke at the first ceremony?

  1. A.

    Nelson Mandela

  2. B.

    Juan Antonio Samaranch

  3. C.

    Pele

  4. D.

    Sebastian Coe

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Nelson Mandela

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Nelson Mandela. The first President of a democratic South Africa was the patron of the Laureus awards, and at the opening ceremony in 2000 he said that sport has the power to change the world and to unite people in a way that little else does; the sentence is now printed with the awards. Option B is wrong because Juan Antonio Samaranch was President of the International Olympic Committee and belongs to the Olympic movement, not to Laureus. Option C is wrong because Pele received the first Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000 but was a recipient at that ceremony and not its patron, which makes him the strongest distractor here. Option D is wrong because Sebastian Coe is a middle distance runner turned administrator, associated with athletics and with the London Games.

Q3.Awards & HonoursMedium

Which Laureus award did Sachin Tendulkar win in 2020?

  1. A.

    World Sportsman of the Year

  2. B.

    Best Sporting Moment

  3. C.

    Lifetime Achievement Award

  4. D.

    World Comeback of the Year

Show answer

Correct answer: B.

Best Sporting Moment

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Best Sporting Moment. The award went to the scene after India won the World Cup of 2011, when the younger players carried Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders around the Wankhede ground; the Best Sporting Moment is the one Laureus award decided by a public vote, which is why the Indian following mattered. Option A is wrong because the World Sportsman of the Year is an award for the season just gone and has not come to an Indian cricketer. Option C is wrong because the Lifetime Achievement Award is a separate category whose first recipient was Pele in 2000. Option D is wrong because the Comeback of the Year is given for a return after injury or a long absence, which is not what the 2020 award recognised.

Q4.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Ballon d’Or was instituted in 1956 by which publication?

  1. A.

    L’Equipe

  2. B.

    France Football

  3. C.

    World Soccer

  4. D.

    Marca

Show answer

Correct answer: B.

France Football

Explanation

The correct answer is B, France Football. The French magazine France Football created the Ballon d’Or in 1956 on the idea of its editor Gabriel Hanot, and the winner is settled on the votes of journalists, which is what separates it from an award given by a federation. Option A is wrong because L’Equipe is the French sports daily from the same publishing house and is remembered for proposing the European Cup, not the Ballon d’Or. Option C is wrong because World Soccer is a British magazine that runs awards of its own, which are not the Ballon d’Or. Option D is wrong because Marca is a Spanish sports daily that gives the Pichichi trophy to the leading scorer of the Spanish league and the Zamora trophy to the best goalkeeper there.

Q5.Awards & HonoursHard

Who won the first Ballon d’Or in 1956?

  1. A.

    Stanley Matthews

  2. B.

    Alfredo Di Stefano

  3. C.

    Raymond Kopa

  4. D.

    Lev Yashin

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Stanley Matthews

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Stanley Matthews. The English winger, then playing for Blackpool and already past forty, received the first Ballon d’Or in 1956, at a time when only European players could be considered. Option B is wrong because Alfredo Di Stefano, the Real Madrid forward, won the award twice later in the nineteen fifties and is the strongest distractor because he dominated that decade. Option C is wrong because Raymond Kopa, the French forward, won in 1958, and his name now belongs to the Kopa Trophy for the best young player. Option D is wrong because Lev Yashin won in 1963 and is remembered for a different reason, as the only goalkeeper ever to take the award, after whom the Yashin Trophy is named.

Q6.Awards & HonoursMedium

Lev Yashin, the Ballon d’Or winner of 1963, is remembered because he is the only

  1. A.

Goalkeeper to have won the award

  2. B.

Defender to have won the award

  3. C.

Player from Asia to have won the award

  4. D.

Player to have won it twice in a row

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Goalkeeper to have won the award

Explanation

The correct answer is A, goalkeeper to have won the award. Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union, known as the black spider for his dark jersey and his reach, won the Ballon d’Or in 1963, and no other goalkeeper has taken it since, which is why the trophy for the best goalkeeper of the year, given from 2019, is named the Yashin Trophy. Option B is wrong because several defenders have won the award, among them Franz Beckenbauer and Fabio Cannavaro. Option C is wrong because the award has not gone to a player from Asia, and in any case Yashin was European. Option D is wrong because winning in consecutive years has happened more than once, so it is no distinction peculiar to Yashin.

Q7.Awards & HonoursHard

The Kopa Trophy, given at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, is awarded to the

  1. A.

Best young player of the year

  2. B.

    Best goalkeeper of the year

  3. C.

    Leading goalscorer of the season

  4. D.

Best woman footballer of the year

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Best young player of the year

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the best young player of the year. The Kopa Trophy was introduced in 2018 and is named after Raymond Kopa, the French forward who won the Ballon d’Or in 1958; its first winner was Kylian Mbappe of France. Option B is wrong because the award for the best goalkeeper is the Yashin Trophy, given from 2019, whose first winner was Alisson Becker of Brazil. Option C is wrong because the leading scorer receives the Gerd Muller Trophy, given from 2021, whose first winner was Robert Lewandowski of Poland. Option D is wrong because the award for the best woman footballer is the Ballon d’Or Feminin, given from 2018, whose first winner was Ada Hegerberg of Norway. Four trophies, four years of introduction: learn them as a set.

Q8.Awards & HonoursHard

Who was the first winner of the Ballon d’Or Feminin, the women’s Ballon d’Or, in 2018?

  1. A.

    Ada Hegerberg of Norway

  2. B.

Megan Rapinoe of the United States

  3. C.

    Marta of Brazil

  4. D.

    Alexia Putellas of Spain

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Ada Hegerberg of Norway

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Ada Hegerberg of Norway. The women’s award was introduced in 2018, more than sixty years after the men’s, and the Norwegian forward, then with Lyon, was its first winner. Option B is wrong because Megan Rapinoe of the United States won the FIFA and Ballon d’Or honours of a later year and is a strong distractor for anyone who remembers the World Cup of 2019. Option C is wrong because Marta of Brazil was named FIFA World Player of the Year several times before the women’s Ballon d’Or existed, which is exactly the confusion the option is placed to create. Option D is wrong because Alexia Putellas of Spain won the award in later years, not in its first year.

Q9.Awards & HonoursHard

During which period was the Ballon d’Or merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year and given as the FIFA Ballon d’Or?

  1. A.

    1991 to 1995

  2. B.

    2007 to 2009

  3. C.

    2010 to 2015

  4. D.

    2016 to 2018

Show answer

Correct answer: C.

2010 to 2015

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 2010 to 2015. France Football and FIFA joined their two awards into one for those six years, so the winner of each of those years holds the FIFA Ballon d’Or; the partnership ended and the two awards were given separately again from 2016, when FIFA began The Best FIFA Men’s Player. Option A is wrong because 1991 is the year the FIFA World Player of the Year began, and its first winner was Lothar Matthaus of Germany, but the two awards were then quite separate. Option B is wrong because 2007 is the year the Ballon d’Or was opened to players at clubs anywhere in the world, a different reform. Option D is wrong because 2016 is when the merger ended, not when it ran.

Q10.Awards & HonoursMedium

The ICC Cricketer of the Year receives which trophy?

  1. A.

    The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy

  2. B.

    The Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy

  3. C.

    The Sir Vivian Richards Trophy

  4. D.

    The Don Bradman Trophy

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. The International Cricket Council began its annual awards in 2004, and the cricketer of the year receives the trophy named after the great all-rounder of the West Indies; the first winner was Rahul Dravid of India, and Sachin Tendulkar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli have also received it. Option B is wrong because the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award is for the women’s cricketer of the year, given from 2017. Option C is wrong because the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy is a series trophy rather than an individual award of the year. Option D is wrong because the Don Bradman name is attached to museum honours and to series trophies, not to the ICC award for cricketer of the year.

Q11.Awards & HonoursHard

Who was the first winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award, instituted in 1991?

  1. A.

    Lothar Matthaus

  2. B.

    Roberto Baggio

  3. C.

    Marco van Basten

  4. D.

    Romario

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

Lothar Matthaus

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Lothar Matthaus. The German midfielder, captain of the side that won the World Cup of 1990, was the first FIFA World Player of the Year when the award began in 1991; FIFA gave it until 2015, with the Ballon d’Or years of 2010 to 2015 in between, and replaced it with The Best FIFA Men’s Player in 2016. Option B is wrong because Roberto Baggio of Italy won the award in 1993. Option C is wrong because Marco van Basten of the Netherlands won the Ballon d’Or three times in the late nineteen eighties, before this FIFA award existed, which is what makes him a tempting option. Option D is wrong because Romario of Brazil won it in 1994, the year of his World Cup.

Q12.Awards & HonoursMedium

Which award is given for the most beautiful goal of the year in football?

  1. A.

    The FIFA Puskas Award

  2. B.

    The European Golden Shoe

  3. C.

    The Gerd Muller Trophy

  4. D.

    The Pichichi Trophy

Show answer

Correct answer: A.

The FIFA Puskas Award

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the FIFA Puskas Award. FIFA introduced it in 2009 for the most beautiful goal of the year, and it is named after Ferenc Puskas of Hungary, the forward of the great side of the nineteen fifties. Option B is wrong because the European Golden Shoe, given since 1968, goes to the leading scorer of the European league season on a points system that weights the different leagues. Option C is wrong because the Gerd Muller Trophy, given at the Ballon d’Or ceremony from 2021, also rewards the number of goals rather than the beauty of one. Option D is wrong because the Pichichi Trophy is the award of the Spanish daily Marca for the leading scorer of the Spanish league, again a matter of counting goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the Laureus awards called the Oscars of sport?

Because they honour achievement across every sport at one ceremony, with nominations from sports journalists and the winners chosen by an academy of retired champions, much as the film awards work. They were established in 1999 and first given in 2000 at Monte Carlo.

Which Indian has won a Laureus World Sports Award?

Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Best Sporting Moment award in 2020 for the scene in which his teammates carried him on their shoulders around the ground after India won the World Cup of 2011. That category is decided by a public vote.

Who gives the Ballon d’Or and on what basis?

The French magazine France Football, which created it in 1956, and the winner is decided on the votes of sports journalists. From 2010 to 2015 it was given jointly with FIFA as the FIFA Ballon d’Or, and the two awards separated again in 2016.

Why is the goalkeeping trophy at the Ballon d’Or called the Yashin Trophy?

Because Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union, who won the Ballon d’Or in 1963, is the only goalkeeper ever to receive the award. The trophy named after him has been given to the best goalkeeper of the year since 2019, and its first winner was Alisson Becker.

What is the difference between the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Men’s Player?

The Ballon d’Or is a magazine award decided by journalists, while The Best FIFA Men’s Player, given since 2016, is a FIFA award with votes from national team coaches and captains, journalists and the public. Between 2010 and 2015 the two were one award.
