Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards and Tansen Samman: Art Awards — GK24 title card

India honours its musicians, dancers, actors and painters through a layered system: three national academies under the Ministry of Culture give the central awards, the Union Government adds a few large prizes of its own, and several states run art awards that are older and richer than many national ones. Examiners work this chapter as a matching exercise, pairing an award with its field, its awarding body or its state. These notes set out the Sangeet Natak Akademi honours, the Madhya Pradesh samman group led by the Tansen Samman, and the other art prizes that papers return to, with the first recipients and founding years that decide a close option.

Sangeet Natak Akademi honours

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is India's national academy for music, dance and drama, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture with its office at Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi. It gives three distinct honours, and the question usually turns on which of them ranks highest.

HonourWhat it isWho receives it
Akademi Ratna, the Akademi FellowshipThe highest honour of the Akademi, restricted to forty living persons at any one timeMasters of the performing arts, and scholars of them
Akademi Puraskar, the Akademi AwardThe annual award, carrying a tamrapatra and an angavastram with a purseArtists in music, dance, theatre, traditional and folk forms, and puppetry
Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva PuraskarInstituted in 2006 for young practitionersArtists who have not completed forty years of age

The Akademi Award has been given since 1952 and is announced for a year by the General Council, then presented by the President of India or by the Akademi at a formal function with performances by the awardees. Its categories cover Hindustani and Carnatic music, the classical dances, theatre direction and acting, the traditional and tribal arts, puppetry and allied fields such as scholarship and criticism. In 2011, to mark the hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Akademi gave special Tagore Akademi Ratna and Tagore Akademi Puraskar honours.

The Madhya Pradesh samman group

No state has built a stronger set of art awards than Madhya Pradesh, and its two best known prizes were both instituted in 1980.

  • Tansen Samman, for Hindustani classical music, named after Tansen, the singer of Akbar's court who is counted among the nine jewels of that court. It is presented at the Tansen Samaroh held every year at Behat near Gwalior, where Tansen's memorial stands. The first award, in 1980, went to Krishnarao Shankar Pandit of the Gwalior gharana.
  • Kalidas Samman, a national award given by the state in rotation across classical music, classical dance, theatre and the plastic arts, named after the Sanskrit poet and dramatist Kalidasa.
  • Tulsi Samman, for folk and tribal art, instituted in 1983.
  • Lata Mangeshkar Award, for light and film music, instituted in 1984.
  • Kabir Samman for poetry, Maithilisharan Gupt Samman for Hindi letters and Iqbal Samman for Urdu writing complete the group.

Other art awards worth knowing

Sangita KalanidhiCarnatic music, its highest honourThe Music Academy, Madras, at its annual conference
National Akademi AwardPainting, sculpture, graphic art and allied visual artsLalit Kala Akademi, at the National Exhibition of Art
Tagore Award for Cultural HarmonyWork that builds harmony across culturesGovernment of India, instituted in 2012
KalaimamaniMusic, dance, theatre and cinema in Tamil NaduGovernment of Tamil Nadu
Dadasaheb Phalke AwardLifetime contribution to Indian cinemaGovernment of India, instituted in 1969
Sahitya Akademi AwardLiterature in the recognised Indian languagesSahitya Akademi, from 1955

Three of these rows are worth a sentence more. The Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony was created to mark Tagore's hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary, and its first award went to the sitar player Ravi Shankar, followed by the conductor Zubin Mehta and the Manipuri dancer Rajkumar Singhajit Singh. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, announced with the National Film Awards by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting rather than the Ministry of Culture, was first given for 1969 to the actress Devika Rani. The Sangita Kalanidhi has been conferred since 1929 by the Music Academy in Madras and not by any government, which is the detail an option sheet tests.

Keeping the awards apart

Three questions decide a mark in this chapter: which field, which body and which state. Attach performing arts to the Sangeet Natak Akademi, visual arts to the Lalit Kala Akademi and letters to the Sahitya Akademi, remembering that all three are autonomous bodies under the Ministry of Culture and none of them is a government department. Attach Tansen, Kalidas, Tulsi, Kabir and Lata Mangeshkar to Madhya Pradesh. Keep cinema separate, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Finally, note the two words that are easily confused: the Ratna is the Fellowship and ranks above the Puraskar, which is the annual award.

Exam Point of View

Papers test three links: award to field, award to awarding body and award to state. The Sangeet Natak Akademi triad is asked by rank, so know that the Ratna or Fellowship stands above the Puraskar and that the Yuva Puraskar has a forty-year age ceiling. Madhya Pradesh is the richest source of state questions: Tansen for Hindustani music, Kalidas rotating across four fields, Tulsi for folk and tribal art, Lata Mangeshkar for light music, Kabir for poetry. First recipients are favourites, especially Krishnarao Shankar Pandit for Tansen, Devika Rani for Phalke and Ravi Shankar for the Tagore Award. The standing trap is the awarding body: the Sangita Kalanidhi comes from a private academy in Madras, and the Phalke Award from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, not the Ministry of Culture.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Awards & HonoursEasy

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is India's national academy for which fields?

  1. A.Literature
  2. B.Painting and sculpture
  3. C.Music, dance and drama
  4. D.Cinema
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Music, dance and drama

Explanation

The correct answer is C, music, dance and drama. The Sangeet Natak Akademi is the national academy for the performing arts, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture with its office at Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi, and it has given its annual Akademi Puraskar since 1952. Option A is wrong because literature belongs to the Sahitya Akademi, which gives the Sahitya Akademi Award in the recognised Indian languages. Option B is wrong because painting, sculpture and graphic art belong to the Lalit Kala Akademi, whose National Akademi Awards are announced with the National Exhibition of Art. Option D is wrong because cinema is handled by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which announces the National Film Awards and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award; none of the three academies deals with film. Learning the three academies by field settles most questions in this chapter.

Q2.Awards & HonoursEasy

The Tansen Samman is conferred by the government of which state?

  1. A.Uttar Pradesh
  2. B.Madhya Pradesh
  3. C.Rajasthan
  4. D.Maharashtra
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Madhya Pradesh

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Madhya Pradesh. The Tansen Samman was instituted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1980 for Hindustani classical music and is presented at the Tansen Samaroh held every year at Behat near Gwalior, where the memorial of Tansen stands. Madhya Pradesh also gives the Kalidas Samman, the Tulsi Samman for folk and tribal art, the Lata Mangeshkar Award for light music and the Kabir Samman for poetry, so the state is the single most productive source of questions in this chapter. Option A is wrong because Uttar Pradesh gives the Yash Bharati and Bharat Bharati honours instead. Option C is wrong because Rajasthan's cultural awards are administered through its own akademis and do not include this samman. Option D is wrong because Maharashtra's state honours do not include the Tansen Samman, although Gwalior gharana musicians have long worked in Maharashtra.

Q3.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Tansen Samman is given for achievement in which field?

  1. A.Hindustani classical music
  2. B.Carnatic vocal music
  3. C.Kathak dance
  4. D.Theatre direction
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Hindustani classical music

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Hindustani classical music. The samman is named after Tansen, the singer of Akbar's court who is counted among the nine jewels of that court, and the Government of Madhya Pradesh gives it for Hindustani classical music at the Tansen Samaroh at Behat near Gwalior. Option B is wrong because the highest recognition in Carnatic music is the Sangita Kalanidhi, conferred by the Music Academy in Madras, and no Madhya Pradesh samman is reserved for that tradition. Option C is wrong because dance in Madhya Pradesh is honoured through the Kalidas Samman in the years when that award's rotation falls on classical dance, not through the Tansen Samman. Option D is wrong for the same reason: theatre is one of the rotating fields of the Kalidas Samman. Remember the pairing as Tansen for Hindustani music and Kalidas for the rotating national award.

Q4.Awards & HonoursMedium

Which is the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi?

  1. A.Akademi Puraskar
  2. B.Akademi Ratna, the Akademi Fellowship
  3. C.Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar
  4. D.Tagore Akademi Puraskar
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Akademi Ratna, the Akademi Fellowship

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Akademi Ratna or Akademi Fellowship. The Fellowship is the Akademi's highest honour and is deliberately scarce: not more than forty living persons hold it at any one time, which is why it is reserved for masters and senior scholars of the performing arts. Option A is wrong because the Akademi Puraskar, given every year with a tamrapatra, an angavastram and a purse, ranks below the Fellowship; a Fellow has usually received the Puraskar earlier in life. Option C is wrong because the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar was instituted in 2006 for artists who have not completed forty years of age and is an encouragement award, the junior honour of the three. Option D is wrong because the Tagore Akademi Puraskar was a special honour given in 2011 for the hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore and is not the standing highest award.

Q5.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is given to artists who have not completed what age?

  1. A.Thirty years
  2. B.Thirty-five years
  3. C.Forty years
  4. D.Forty-five years
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Forty years

Explanation

The correct answer is C, forty years. The Sangeet Natak Akademi instituted the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2006, naming it after the shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan, to recognise promise in music, dance, theatre, the traditional and folk arts and puppetry, and the eligibility condition is that the artist has not completed forty years of age. Option A is wrong because thirty years is the ceiling used by some state youth awards, not by this one. Option B is wrong because thirty-five is a distractor drawn from other young talent schemes. Option D is wrong because forty-five would place the award well into mid career and defeat its purpose as an encouragement honour. A useful cross link is that forty also appears in this chapter as the ceiling on the number of living Akademi Fellows, so keep the two uses of the figure separate.

Q6.Awards & HonoursHard

The Sangita Kalanidhi, the highest honour in Carnatic music, is conferred by:

  1. A.The Sangeet Natak Akademi
  2. B.The Music Academy, Madras
  3. C.The Government of Tamil Nadu
  4. D.The Kalakshetra Foundation
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The Music Academy, Madras

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Music Academy, Madras. The Academy, founded in 1928 in the wake of the Madras session of the Indian National Congress, began conferring the title Sangita Kalanidhi in 1929, and it is bestowed at the Academy's annual conference during the Margazhi music season on the musician who presides over that conference. It is a private institution's honour, not a state award, which is exactly the point an option sheet tests. Option A is wrong because the Sangeet Natak Akademi gives its own Puraskar and Fellowship in Carnatic music, but not this title. Option C is wrong because the Government of Tamil Nadu confers the Kalaimamani through its own body for music, dance, theatre and cinema. Option D is wrong because the Kalakshetra Foundation at Chennai, founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale, is a teaching institution in dance and music rather than an awarding body of this kind.

Q7.Awards & HonoursHard

In which year was the Kalidas Samman instituted by the Government of Madhya Pradesh?

  1. A.1975
  2. B.1980
  3. C.1985
  4. D.1990
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 1980

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1980. The Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Kalidas Samman in 1980, in the same year as the Tansen Samman, and named it after the Sanskrit poet and dramatist Kalidasa, whose association with Ujjain the state claims. The award is national in scope and rotates across classical music, classical dance, theatre and the plastic arts, so a recipient in one year may be a painter and in the next a dancer. Option A is wrong because 1975 precedes the state's cultural awards policy of 1980, under which both sammans were created. Option C is wrong because 1985 is close to the founding of two later honours of the same family, the Tulsi Samman of 1983 and the Lata Mangeshkar Award of 1984. Option D is wrong because by 1990 the samman had already been given for a decade. Remember 1980 as the year of both Tansen and Kalidas.

Q8.Awards & HonoursHard

The first Tansen Samman, in 1980, was conferred on which musician?

  1. A.Krishnarao Shankar Pandit
  2. B.Kumar Gandharva
  3. C.Bhimsen Joshi
  4. D.Amjad Ali Khan
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Krishnarao Shankar Pandit. The vocalist of the Gwalior gharana, the oldest of the Hindustani khayal gharanas, received the first Tansen Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1980, a fitting choice because the samman is presented near Gwalior at Tansen's memorial. Option B is wrong because Kumar Gandharva, who made his home at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh and sang in a style of his own drawn from folk tunes, was honoured later and not first. Option C is wrong because Bhimsen Joshi belonged to the Kirana gharana and is associated above all with the Bharat Ratna conferred on him and with the Sawai Gandharva festival at Pune. Option D is wrong because Amjad Ali Khan is a sarod player of the Senia Bangash lineage, and the samman in its early years went to vocalists of the Gwalior tradition.

Q9.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 and its first recipient was:

  1. A.Devika Rani
  2. B.Nargis
  3. C.Prithviraj Kapoor
  4. D.Sulochana
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Devika Rani

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Devika Rani. India's highest honour in cinema was instituted in 1969, the birth centenary year of Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who made Raja Harishchandra in 1913, and the award for 1969 went to the actress Devika Rani. It is announced with the National Film Awards by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which keeps cinema outside the Ministry of Culture and its three academies. Option B is wrong because Nargis is remembered as the first actress to receive the Padma Shri in Indian cinema and was later a member of the Rajya Sabha, but not as the first Phalke awardee. Option C is wrong because Prithviraj Kapoor received the award in the early years, in 1971, and posthumously, which makes him a strong distractor. Option D is wrong because Sulochana, the silent era star, belongs to an earlier generation and did not receive it.

Q10.Awards & HonoursMedium

The National Akademi Awards for painting, sculpture and graphic art are given by:

  1. A.Sangeet Natak Akademi
  2. B.Lalit Kala Akademi
  3. C.Sahitya Akademi
  4. D.Indian Council for Cultural Relations
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Lalit Kala Akademi

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Lalit Kala Akademi. The national academy of art, set up in 1954 and working from Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi, holds the National Exhibition of Art and gives the National Akademi Awards to the works selected in it, covering painting, sculpture, graphic art and allied forms; it also elects its own Fellows. Option A is wrong because the Sangeet Natak Akademi deals only with the performing arts, giving the Akademi Puraskar, the Fellowship and the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. Option C is wrong because the Sahitya Akademi is the academy of letters and gives awards in the recognised Indian languages along with the Bhasha Samman and translation prizes. Option D is wrong because the Indian Council for Cultural Relations carries Indian culture abroad through chairs, centres and exchanges, and is not an awarding academy for the visual arts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Akademi Ratna and the Akademi Puraskar?

The Akademi Ratna is the Fellowship of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and is its highest honour, held by not more than forty living persons at any one time. The Akademi Puraskar is the annual award, given since 1952 in music, dance, theatre, the traditional and folk arts and puppetry, with a tamrapatra, an angavastram and a purse. An artist normally receives the Puraskar first and the Fellowship much later.

Which state gives the Tansen Samman and in which field?

The Government of Madhya Pradesh gives it for Hindustani classical music. It was instituted in 1980, is named after Tansen of Akbar's court, and is presented each year at the Tansen Samaroh held at Behat near Gwalior, where Tansen's memorial stands. The first award, in 1980, was conferred on Krishnarao Shankar Pandit of the Gwalior gharana.

Who confers the Sangita Kalanidhi?

The Music Academy, Madras, a private institution founded in 1928, has conferred the title since 1929 at its annual conference during the Margazhi season, on the musician who presides over that conference. It is the highest recognition in Carnatic music. It is not a government award, and this is the point examiners test by placing the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Government of Tamil Nadu in the options.

Which art awards does Madhya Pradesh give besides the Tansen Samman?

The Kalidas Samman, instituted in 1980, a national award rotating across classical music, classical dance, theatre and the plastic arts; the Tulsi Samman of 1983 for folk and tribal art; the Lata Mangeshkar Award of 1984 for light and film music; and in letters the Kabir Samman for poetry, the Maithilisharan Gupt Samman for Hindi and the Iqbal Samman for Urdu.

Is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award given by the Ministry of Culture?

No. It is announced with the National Film Awards by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It was instituted in 1969, the birth centenary year of Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who directed Raja Harishchandra in 1913, and the first award went to the actress Devika Rani. The three national academies under the Ministry of Culture cover the performing arts, the visual arts and letters, but not cinema.
