Grammy and Music Awards: Categories and Indian Winners — GK24 title card

Questions on awards are among the easiest marks in a general knowledge paper, because the facts behind them do not change: who founded an award, in which year, in which country, and which Indian won it first. Music awards are asked in every SSC, Railway and State exam cycle, and the Grammy Awards lead the list because Indian musicians have won them regularly since 1968. This note covers the Grammy Awards in full, the Indians who have won them, the national and state music awards of India, and the main international music prizes an examiner may place beside the Grammy as a distractor.

The Grammy Awards: origin and organisation

The Grammy Award is the highest honour in the recording industry of the United States. It is presented by the Recording Academy, formally the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, a body of musicians, producers, engineers and other recording professionals. The first ceremony was held on 4 May 1959 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, and honoured the recordings of 1958. The award takes its name and its shape from the gramophone: the trophy is a small gilded gramophone, which is why the prize is often called simply the gramophone trophy. Winners are chosen by a vote of the Academy's recording members, not by a jury of critics, and the ceremony is normally held in Los Angeles.

The general field: the four main categories

Out of the many Grammy categories, four are open to every genre and are together called the General Field, or informally the Big Four. Examiners like them because the difference between three of them is a classic trap.

CategoryWhat it honoursWho receives it
Record of the YearA single track, judged as a recordingPerforming artist, producer and engineer
Album of the YearA complete albumArtist and the album production team
Song of the YearThe composition, that is the words and the musicThe songwriter or composer
Best New ArtistAn artist who broke through that yearThe artist

Remember the one line that settles the trap: Record of the Year rewards the performance of a track, while Song of the Year rewards the writing of it. The Academy also gives honours outside the competition, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Grammy Legend Award and entry into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Indian winners of the Grammy Award

Pandit Ravi Shankar was the first Indian to win a Grammy, in 1968, for Best Chamber Music Performance for the album West Meets East, recorded with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He went on to win further Grammys and received the Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain won with Mickey Hart for the album Planet Drum, which took the very first Grammy awarded in the Best World Music Album category in 1992. A. R. Rahman won two Grammys in 2010 for Slumdog Millionaire, one for the soundtrack album and one, shared with the lyricists Gulzar and Tanvi Shah, for the song Jai Ho; Tanvi Shah thereby became the first Indian woman to win a Grammy. The composer Ricky Kej has won in the New Age category, first for Winds of Samsara with Wouter Kellerman and later for Divine Tides with Stewart Copeland. Falguni Shah, known as Falu, won Best Children's Music Album in 2022 for A Colorful World. In 2024 the fusion group Shakti won Best Global Music Album for This Moment, a night on which Zakir Hussain collected three Grammys.

India's own music awards

The Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy for music, dance and drama, was created by a resolution of the Government of India in 1952 and inaugurated in January 1953. It gives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award every year, and its highest honour is the Akademi Fellowship, called Ratna Sadasya, which is limited to a small fixed number of living artists at any time. In Carnatic music the highest honour is the Sangeetha Kalanidhi of the Madras Music Academy. Among state awards, the Tansen Samman is given by the Government of Madhya Pradesh for Hindustani classical music and is presented at the Tansen Samaroh held at Gwalior, while the Kalidas Samman, instituted by the same state in 1980, covers classical music, classical dance, theatre and the plastic arts. Musicians have also received the highest civilian honours: M. S. Subbulakshmi was the first musician awarded the Bharat Ratna, and Ravi Shankar, Bhimsen Joshi, Lata Mangeshkar and Ustad Bismillah Khan were also conferred it.

Other international music prizes

The Polar Music Prize is awarded in Sweden and was instituted in 1989 by Stig Anderson, the manager of the group ABBA; Ravi Shankar received it in 1998. The BRIT Awards are the leading popular music awards of the United Kingdom, while the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards are the other large American prizes. The Latin Grammy Awards, a separate ceremony for Spanish and Portuguese language recordings, began in 2000.

Exam Point of View

Papers test four things here. First, the basics of the Grammy: the Recording Academy as the awarding body, 1959 as the first ceremony, and the gramophone trophy; the common trap is to offer the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives the Oscars. Second, the general field categories, where the difference between Record of the Year, which rewards a performance, and Song of the Year, which rewards the writing, is the single most repeated question. Third, Indian winners in order: Ravi Shankar first in 1968, Zakir Hussain in 1992, Rahman with Gulzar and Tanvi Shah in 2010, then Ricky Kej, Falguni Shah and Shakti. Fourth, Indian awards: which body gives the Fellowship, which state gives the Tansen and Kalidas Sammans, and which academy gives the Sangeetha Kalanidhi. Statements matching an award with the wrong awarding body are the usual format.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Awards & HonoursEasy

Who was the first Indian to win a Grammy Award?

  1. A.Ustad Zakir Hussain
  2. B.Pandit Ravi Shankar
  3. C.A. R. Rahman
  4. D.Pandit Bhimsen Joshi
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Pandit Ravi Shankar

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Pandit Ravi Shankar. The sitar maestro won the Grammy in 1968 for Best Chamber Music Performance for the album West Meets East, which he recorded with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin, making him the first Indian to receive the award. He later won further Grammys and was given the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Option A is wrong because Ustad Zakir Hussain won later, in 1992, with Mickey Hart for Planet Drum. Option C is wrong because A. R. Rahman's two Grammys came in 2010 for Slumdog Millionaire, more than forty years after Ravi Shankar. Option D is wrong because Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the Kirana gharana vocalist, received the Bharat Ratna and the Sangeet Natak Akademi honours but never a Grammy. Fix the pair Ravi Shankar and 1968 in memory.

Q2.Awards & HonoursEasy

The Grammy Awards are presented by which organisation?

  1. A.The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
  2. B.The Royal Swedish Academy of Music
  3. C.The Recording Academy
  4. D.The British Academy of Film and Television Arts
Show answer

Correct answer: C. The Recording Academy

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the Recording Academy. Its formal name is the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and its voting members are musicians, producers, recording engineers and other professionals of the American recording industry. Option A is wrong because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives the Academy Awards, that is the Oscars, which honour cinema and not recordings. Option B is wrong because the Royal Swedish Academy of Music is associated with the Polar Music Prize of Sweden, a different honour that Ravi Shankar received in 1998. Option D is wrong because the British Academy of Film and Television Arts gives the BAFTA awards in the United Kingdom; the leading British music awards are the BRIT Awards instead. A useful memory hook is that the Grammy belongs to recording, the Oscar to film and the BAFTA to British film and television.

Q3.Awards & HonoursMedium

Among the Grammy general field categories, which one is given to the songwriter rather than the performer?

  1. A.Record of the Year
  2. B.Song of the Year
  3. C.Album of the Year
  4. D.Best New Artist
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Song of the Year

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Song of the Year. This category honours the composition itself, that is the words and the music, so the trophy goes to the songwriter or composer rather than to the person who sang or produced the track. Option A is wrong because Record of the Year honours a single track as a finished recording and is given to the performing artist along with the producer and the engineer. Option C is wrong because Album of the Year honours a complete album and is shared by the artist and the album production team. Option D is wrong because Best New Artist is given to a performer who broke through during the eligibility year and has nothing to do with writing. The line to memorise is simple: Record rewards the performance of a track, Song rewards the writing of it.

Q4.Awards & HonoursEasy

A. R. Rahman won two Grammy Awards in 2010 for his work on which film?

  1. A.Roja
  2. B.Slumdog Millionaire
  3. C.Lagaan
  4. D.Life of Pi
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Slumdog Millionaire

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman took one Grammy for the compilation soundtrack album of the film and a second, shared with the lyricists Gulzar and Tanvi Shah, for the song Jai Ho; through that second award Tanvi Shah became the first Indian woman to win a Grammy. The same film had already brought Rahman two Academy Awards in 2009. Option A is wrong because Roja, his debut film score of 1992, brought him the National Film Award for Best Music Direction but no Grammy. Option C is wrong because Lagaan was nominated for the Academy Award in the foreign language film category but did not win a Grammy for its music. Option D is wrong because the score of Life of Pi was composed by Mychael Danna, not by Rahman.

Q5.Awards & HonoursHard

The album Planet Drum, for which Ustad Zakir Hussain shared a Grammy with Mickey Hart, won the first ever award in which category?

  1. A.Best New Age Album
  2. B.Best Contemporary Instrumental Album
  3. C.Best World Music Album
  4. D.Best Global Music Performance
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Best World Music Album

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Best World Music Album. Planet Drum, a percussion project led by Mickey Hart with Zakir Hussain among its players, won in 1992 the very first Grammy ever given in that newly created category. Option A is wrong because Best New Age Album is the category in which Ricky Kej won for Winds of Samsara and later for Divine Tides, a different stream of the awards. Option B is wrong because Best Contemporary Instrumental Album is a separate category, one in which Zakir Hussain won much later in his career. Option D is wrong because Best Global Music Performance is a modern renaming of the world music stream and did not exist in 1992. Remember the chain: Planet Drum, 1992, Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain, the first world music Grammy.

Q6.Awards & HonoursMedium

The first Grammy Award ceremony was held in which year?

  1. A.1949
  2. B.1959
  3. C.1969
  4. D.1979
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 1959

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1959. The Recording Academy held its first Grammy ceremony on 4 May 1959 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, and it honoured the recordings released during 1958. The trophy handed out that evening was the small gilded gramophone that still gives the award its name. Option A is wrong because in 1949 the recording industry was still using the older trade listings and the Academy itself had not yet been formed. Option C is wrong because 1969 is a decade too late; by then Pandit Ravi Shankar had already won his first Grammy, in 1968. Option D is wrong because 1979 falls two decades after the first ceremony. A handy anchor is that the Grammys began in the same era as colour television in the United States, nearly thirty years after the Academy Awards for cinema.

Q7.Awards & HonoursMedium

What is the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi?

  1. A.The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award
  2. B.The Akademi Fellowship, called Ratna Sadasya
  3. C.The Kalidas Samman
  4. D.The Tansen Samman
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The Akademi Fellowship, called Ratna Sadasya

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Akademi Fellowship, called Ratna Sadasya. The Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy for music, dance and drama set up by a government resolution in 1952 and inaugurated in January 1953, gives its annual awards widely but reserves the Fellowship as its highest distinction, limited to a small fixed number of living artists at any one time. Option A is wrong because the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, though prestigious, ranks below the Fellowship. Option C is wrong because the Kalidas Samman is a state honour instituted by Madhya Pradesh in 1980 and is not given by the Akademi at all. Option D is wrong for the same reason: the Tansen Samman is a Madhya Pradesh award for Hindustani classical music, presented at the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior.

Q8.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Tansen Samman, given for Hindustani classical music, is conferred by the government of which state?

  1. A.Uttar Pradesh
  2. B.Madhya Pradesh
  3. C.Maharashtra
  4. D.Rajasthan
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Madhya Pradesh

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Madhya Pradesh. The award is named after Tansen, the celebrated musician of Akbar's court who is associated with Gwalior, and it is presented at the Tansen Samaroh, the annual music festival held at Gwalior in that state. The same state government instituted the Kalidas Samman in 1980 and the Lata Mangeshkar Award for light music, so Madhya Pradesh is the correct answer for a whole cluster of music honours. Option A is wrong because Uttar Pradesh gives the Yash Bharati and other state honours but not the Tansen Samman. Option C is wrong because Maharashtra, though central to Hindustani music through the Gwalior and Kirana traditions, does not give this particular award. Option D is wrong because Rajasthan is not connected with the Tansen Samaroh.

Q9.Awards & HonoursHard

The Sangeetha Kalanidhi, the highest honour in Carnatic music, is conferred by which institution?

  1. A.The Madras Music Academy
  2. B.The Sangeet Natak Akademi
  3. C.The Sahitya Akademi
  4. D.The Lalit Kala Akademi
Show answer

Correct answer: A. The Madras Music Academy

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the Madras Music Academy. The Academy in Chennai confers the Sangeetha Kalanidhi on the musician who presides over its annual December music season, and the title is treated as the highest distinction a Carnatic musician can receive. Option B is wrong because the Sangeet Natak Akademi is the national academy for music, dance and drama and gives its own awards and Fellowship, which cover all Indian traditions rather than Carnatic music alone. Option C is wrong because the Sahitya Akademi is the national academy of letters and honours writers in the recognised Indian languages. Option D is wrong because the Lalit Kala Akademi is the national academy of fine arts and deals with painting, sculpture and graphic art. Keep the three national akademis separate: Sangeet Natak for performing arts, Sahitya for literature, Lalit Kala for fine arts.

Q10.Awards & HonoursMedium

Who was the first Indian musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna?

  1. A.Pandit Ravi Shankar
  2. B.M. S. Subbulakshmi
  3. C.Lata Mangeshkar
  4. D.Ustad Bismillah Khan
Show answer

Correct answer: B. M. S. Subbulakshmi

Explanation

The correct answer is B, M. S. Subbulakshmi. The Carnatic vocalist was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1998, becoming the first musician to receive the country's highest civilian honour; she had earlier been the first Indian musician to win the Ramon Magsaysay Award, in 1974. Option A is wrong because Pandit Ravi Shankar received the Bharat Ratna the following year, in 1999, so he came second among musicians. Option C is wrong because Lata Mangeshkar, the playback singer, was honoured in 2001, three years after Subbulakshmi, and she had earlier received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. Option D is wrong because the shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan also received the honour in 2001. The order worth memorising is Subbulakshmi, then Ravi Shankar, then Lata Mangeshkar and Bismillah Khan together.
