Awards in News This Year: The Annual Awards Calendar — GK24 title card

Every year a fixed set of awards returns to the newspapers, always in the same months and always from the same institutions. Only the names of the winners change. A candidate who learns the awards themselves, which body gives each one, in which month it is announced and what it is given for, can attach a new winner's name to a frame that is already in place, and can answer most questions in the paper even without that name. These notes build that frame. Treat the winners of any particular year as a separate list to be noted from the announcements, and rely here on the facts that do not move.

The Indian civilian and gallantry awards

The Bharat Ratna and the three Padma awards were instituted in 1954. The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honour and carries no cash award, only a certificate signed by the President and a medallion in the shape of a peepal leaf. The Padma awards run in three grades in descending order: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. They are announced on the eve of Republic Day and conferred by the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan later in the year. Sachin Tendulkar, honoured in 2014, was the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna.

The gallantry awards fall into two families. In the face of the enemy the order is the Param Vir Chakra, the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra; away from the battlefield it is the Ashoka Chakra, the Kirti Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra. Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. Both families were instituted in 1950 with effect from the day India became a Republic.

Sports, cinema and literature

  • The highest sporting honour of the country was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021; the Arjuna Award goes to consistently outstanding players, the Dronacharya Award to coaches and the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement.
  • National Sports Day is observed on 29 August, the birth anniversary of the hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, and the sports awards are timed around it.
  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, instituted in 1969 for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema, was first given to the actress Devika Rani.
  • The Jnanpith Award, instituted in 1961 by the Bharatiya Jnanpith and first awarded in 1965 to the Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup, is the highest literary honour for an Indian writer.
  • The Sahitya Akademi, itself established in 1954, gives annual awards in twenty four languages, along with its translation and youth awards.
  • The Saraswati Samman and the Vyas Samman, both instituted in 1991 by the K. K. Birla Foundation, are the best known private literary prizes.

The international awards that return every year

The Nobel Prizes were instituted by the will of Alfred Nobel and first awarded in 1901 in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace; the prize in economic sciences was added in 1968 by Sveriges Riksbank. The announcements come in the first half of October and the ceremonies are held on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel's death, at Stockholm, except the peace prize, which is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and presented at Oslo. No more than three people may share one prize and the prizes are not awarded posthumously. The Ramon Magsaysay Award, instituted in 1957 in the Philippines and often called the Nobel of Asia, the Booker Prize for fiction, instituted in 1969, the Pulitzer Prizes for journalism and letters, instituted in 1917, the Abel Prize and the Fields Medal in mathematics, and the Turing Award in computing complete the list that Indian papers ask about.

How to answer a question on the awards of a year

Three habits are enough. First, for each award learn the field, the founding year and the awarding body, because an examiner who cannot expect a candidate to know this year's winner will ask one of these instead. Second, when noting a winner, note the field and the reason with the name, since questions often describe the work and ask for the person or the prize. Third, watch the traps built into the structure of the awards: the peace prize is the only Nobel decided outside Sweden, the Bharat Ratna carries no money, the Dronacharya is for coaches and not players, and the highest peacetime gallantry award is the Ashoka Chakra and not the Param Vir Chakra.

Exam Point of View

A paper cannot assume that every candidate has followed the latest announcement, so it asks the permanent side of the award instead: the founding year, the awarding body, the field and the month of announcement. Prepare in that order and add the current winners as a separate short list. The traps repeat from year to year. The highest peacetime gallantry award is the Ashoka Chakra, not the Param Vir Chakra. The Dronacharya Award goes to coaches, not players. The Bharat Ratna carries no money. The Nobel Peace Prize is the only one decided in Norway and presented at Oslo, while the rest are presented at Stockholm. The economics Nobel was not in Alfred Nobel's will and was added in 1968. Where a question describes an achievement and asks for the award, match the field first and the year second.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Awards & HonoursEasy

The Bharat Ratna and the Padma awards are announced every year on the eve of which day?

  1. A.Independence Day
  2. B.Republic Day
  3. C.Gandhi Jayanti
  4. D.Constitution Day
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Republic Day

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Republic Day. The list of Bharat Ratna and Padma awardees is released on 25 January, the eve of Republic Day, and the honours are conferred by the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan later in the year. Option A is wrong because Independence Day is associated with the announcement of gallantry awards and of the Prime Minister's address from the Red Fort, not with the Padma list. Option C is wrong because Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence and carries no award announcement of this kind. Option D is wrong because Constitution Day on 26 November marks the adoption of the Constitution in 1949 and again has no award list attached to it. Both the Bharat Ratna and the Padma awards were instituted in 1954, and the Bharat Ratna carries no cash award.

Q2.Awards & HonoursMedium

Which is the highest gallantry award of India for bravery shown away from the battlefield?

  1. A.Param Vir Chakra
  2. B.Ashoka Chakra
  3. C.Kirti Chakra
  4. D.Shaurya Chakra
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Ashoka Chakra

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Ashoka Chakra. India's gallantry awards come in two families. For valour in the presence of the enemy the order is Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra; for valour otherwise than in the face of the enemy the order is Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, so the Ashoka Chakra stands highest in peacetime. Option A is wrong because the Param Vir Chakra is the highest wartime award, first given to Major Somnath Sharma. Option C is wrong because the Kirti Chakra is second in the peacetime order, corresponding to the Maha Vir Chakra. Option D is wrong because the Shaurya Chakra is third, corresponding to the Vir Chakra. Learn the two ladders side by side, since the commonest question asks for one rank of one ladder while offering ranks of the other as distractors.

Q3.Awards & HonoursEasy

The highest sporting honour of India was renamed in 2021 after which sportsperson?

  1. A.Milkha Singh
  2. B.Major Dhyan Chand
  3. C.Kapil Dev
  4. D.Dhanraj Pillay
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Major Dhyan Chand

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Major Dhyan Chand. The country's highest sporting honour was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, after the hockey player whose birth anniversary on 29 August is observed as National Sports Day. Option A is wrong because Milkha Singh, the athlete known as the Flying Sikh, has no national award named after him. Option C is wrong because Kapil Dev captained the cricket team that won the World Cup in 1983 but has no award in his name. Option D is wrong because Dhanraj Pillay is a former hockey captain who received the Khel Ratna himself. Keep the family of sports awards clear: Khel Ratna as the highest, the Arjuna Award for consistently outstanding players, the Dronacharya Award for coaches and the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement.

Q4.Awards & HonoursHard

The first Jnanpith Award, given in 1965, went to which writer?

  1. A.Sumitranandan Pant
  2. B.G. Sankara Kurup
  3. C.Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay
  4. D.Umashankar Joshi
Show answer

Correct answer: B. G. Sankara Kurup

Explanation

The correct answer is B, G. Sankara Kurup. The Jnanpith Award was instituted by the Bharatiya Jnanpith in 1961 and given for the first time in 1965 to the Malayalam poet G. Sankara Kurup for his collection Odakkuzhal. Option A is wrong because Sumitranandan Pant received the award in 1968 and was the first Hindi writer to do so, which makes him the commonest wrong answer here. Option C is wrong because Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay received it in 1966, in the second year, for Bengali. Option D is wrong because Umashankar Joshi received it in 1967 for Gujarati. The Jnanpith is the highest literary honour for an Indian writer and is given for work in a language listed in the Eighth Schedule, along with English. Note also that the Jnanpith is awarded by a private trust and not by the Government of India, which is a point papers like to test.

Q5.Awards & HonoursEasy

On which date are the Nobel Prize ceremonies held every year?

  1. A.21 October
  2. B.10 December
  3. C.1 January
  4. D.24 October
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 10 December

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 10 December. The Nobel ceremonies are held on 10 December every year, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896; the prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and economic sciences are presented at Stockholm, while the peace prize is presented at Oslo. Option A is wrong because 21 October is the birth anniversary of Alfred Nobel and no ceremony falls on it. Option C is wrong because 1 January has no connection with the prizes; the winners are announced in the first half of October. Option D is wrong because 24 October is United Nations Day, which is often confused with the Nobel calendar because of the peace prize. Remember that the economics prize was not in Nobel's will and was added in 1968 by the central bank of Sweden.

Q6.Awards & HonoursMedium

Who was the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award?

  1. A.Devika Rani
  2. B.Prithviraj Kapoor
  3. C.Satyajit Ray
  4. D.Lata Mangeshkar
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Devika Rani

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Devika Rani. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema, in memory of Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who made Raja Harishchandra in 1913, the first Indian feature film, and the first award went to the actress Devika Rani. Option B is wrong because Prithviraj Kapoor received the award later and posthumously. Option C is wrong because Satyajit Ray, the director of Pather Panchali, received the award in the nineteen eighties and was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna. Option D is wrong because Lata Mangeshkar received the award decades after it was instituted. The award is announced with the National Film Awards, so the year of institution, 1969, and the name Devika Rani are the two facts to carry.

Q7.Awards & HonoursHard

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, India's best known award for science, is given by which body?

  1. A.Indian National Science Academy
  2. B.Council of Scientific and Industrial Research
  3. C.Department of Science and Technology
  4. D.Indian Space Research Organisation
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Council of Scientific and Industrial Research

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The prize is named after Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the first Director General of the Council, and is given by the Council to scientists working in India, usually announced around its foundation day on 26 September. Option A is wrong because the Indian National Science Academy elects fellows and gives medals of its own, but not this prize. Option C is wrong because the Department of Science and Technology funds research and runs fellowship schemes; the Council is a separate body, although both come under the same broad umbrella of science administration. Option D is wrong because the Indian Space Research Organisation is concerned with space missions and gives no general science prize. Note that the prize goes to scientists below a prescribed age, which is why it is called an award for young scientists.

Q8.Awards & HonoursEasy

National Sports Day, around which the national sports awards are conferred, is observed on 29 August as the birth anniversary of:

  1. A.Major Dhyan Chand
  2. B.Sachin Tendulkar
  3. C.P. T. Usha
  4. D.Vishwanathan Anand
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Major Dhyan Chand

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Major Dhyan Chand. National Sports Day is observed on 29 August, the birth anniversary of the hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who was part of the Indian teams that won Olympic gold in 1928, 1932 and 1936, and the national sports awards are conferred around this day. Option B is wrong because Sachin Tendulkar, born in April, was the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna but has no national day in his name. Option C is wrong because P. T. Usha is the athlete remembered for her near miss in the hurdles at the Los Angeles Olympics of 1984. Option D is wrong because Vishwanathan Anand is the chess grandmaster who was the first recipient of the Khel Ratna. Link 29 August, Dhyan Chand, National Sports Day and the sports awards as one chain.

Q9.Awards & HonoursHard

The Gandhi Peace Prize, given by the Government of India, was instituted in which year?

  1. A.1969
  2. B.1985
  3. C.1995
  4. D.2001
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 1995

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 1995. The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted by the Government of India in 1995, the year marking the one hundred and twenty fifth birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and it is given for social, economic and political change through non-violence, to an individual or an institution, Indian or foreign. Option A is wrong because 1969 is the year the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted, on the centenary of Gandhi's birth. Option B is wrong because 1985 is the year the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development was instituted, a different prize given by a trust and presented on 19 November. Option D is wrong because 2001 has no award of this kind attached to it. The jury of the Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by the Prime Minister, which is another fact papers ask for.

Q10.Awards & HonoursMedium

Who was the first sportsperson to be awarded the Bharat Ratna?

  1. A.Major Dhyan Chand
  2. B.Sachin Tendulkar
  3. C.Milkha Singh
  4. D.Vishwanathan Anand
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Sachin Tendulkar

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Sachin Tendulkar. The cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was named for the Bharat Ratna in 2013 and honoured in 2014, the first sportsperson to receive the highest civilian award of the country and also the youngest recipient at that time. Option A is wrong because Major Dhyan Chand, for all his three Olympic golds in hockey, has not received the Bharat Ratna; the highest sporting award and National Sports Day carry his name instead. Option C is wrong because Milkha Singh received the Padma Shri and not the Bharat Ratna. Option D is wrong because Vishwanathan Anand received the Padma Vibhushan and was the first winner of the Khel Ratna, but not the Bharat Ratna. Note that the rules for the Bharat Ratna were widened to allow any field of human endeavour, which is what made a sportsperson eligible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a student prepare a topic like awards in the news?

Prepare the frame first and the names later. For each award learn the field it honours, the body that gives it, the year it was instituted and the month it is announced, because those never change and most questions are set from them. Then keep a separate one page list of the winners of the current year, noting the field and the reason beside each name.

When are the Padma awards announced and when are they given?

The list is announced on 25 January, the eve of Republic Day, and the awards are conferred by the President at investiture ceremonies at Rashtrapati Bhavan later in the year. They run in three grades: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, in that order of precedence.

Why is the Nobel Peace Prize given at Oslo and not at Stockholm?

Because Alfred Nobel's will placed the peace prize in the hands of a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, while the other prizes were left to Swedish institutions. So the peace prize is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and presented at Oslo, and the prizes in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economic sciences are presented at Stockholm, all on 10 December.

What is the difference between the Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awards?

The Arjuna Award is given to a player for consistently outstanding performance over several years, the Dronacharya Award is given to a coach whose trainees have won at the highest level, and the Dhyan Chand Award is given for lifetime contribution to sport. Above all three stands the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour of the country.

Which awards are given by the Government of India itself?

Among others, the Bharat Ratna and the Padma awards, the gallantry awards, the national sports awards, the National Film Awards including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Gandhi Peace Prize. The Jnanpith is given by a private trust, the Sahitya Akademi awards by an autonomous academy and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
