Miss World and Miss Universe: India's Winners and Facts — GK24 title card

Beauty pageants appear in the awards and honours section because the questions are clean pairings of a name, a year and a title. Two contests matter: Miss World, the older of the two, and Miss Universe, started a year later. India has won both, and the years in which it won are the most frequently asked facts in this chapter. These notes give the founding of each contest, the Indian winners in order, and the traps that examiners build around them.

Miss World

Miss World was founded in 1951 by Eric Morley in the United Kingdom. It began as a contest attached to the Festival of Britain and was meant to be a one-off event, but its popularity made it annual. After Eric Morley's death the organisation has been led by Julia Morley. The pageant's motto, Beauty with a Purpose, was introduced in the nineteen seventies and makes charitable work by the contestants a part of the judging, which is the point most often asked about it. The first Miss World was Kiki Hakansson of Sweden.

Miss Universe

Miss Universe was founded in 1952 by a swimwear company in the United States, and the first contest was held at Long Beach in California. The first winner was Armi Kuusela of Finland. The pageant was owned by the businessman Donald Trump from 1996 until 2015, after which the organisation changed hands more than once, so the ownership is not a safe fact to memorise; the founding year and the first host city are. Where Miss World grew out of a British festival, Miss Universe grew out of American advertising, and that difference in origin is sometimes set as a question.

India's Miss World winners

YearWinnerPoint to remember
1966Reita FariaThe first Indian and the first Asian to win Miss World; a medical student who became a doctor and never entered films
1994Aishwarya RaiWon at Sun City in South Africa in the same year that India won Miss Universe
1997Diana HaydenWon the contest held in the Seychelles
1999Yukta MookheyWon the contest held in London
2000Priyanka ChopraWon at London in the same year that India won Miss Universe again
2017Manushi ChhillarWon at Sanya in China, ending a gap of seventeen years

Those six titles, won between 1966 and 2017, are the ones a candidate must be able to list in order.

1994Sushmita SenThe first Indian to win Miss Universe; crowned at Manila in the Philippines
2000Lara DuttaCrowned at Nicosia in Cyprus
2021Harnaaz SandhuCrowned at Eilat in Israel, ending a gap of twenty one years

The two double years

Two years are asked more than any others. In 1994 India won both crowns: Sushmita Sen took Miss Universe and Aishwarya Rai took Miss World. The same thing happened in 2000, when Lara Dutta won Miss Universe and Priyanka Chopra won Miss World; in that year Dia Mirza also won Miss Asia Pacific, so India held three international titles at once. Examiners like to swap the two names within a year, so fix in memory that Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta belong to Miss Universe while Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra belong to Miss World.

The Big Four and other pageants

  • Miss World, from 1951, with its motto Beauty with a Purpose.
  • Miss Universe, from 1952, first held at Long Beach, California.
  • Miss International, from 1960, long associated with Japan, which hosts it.
  • Miss Earth, from 2001, founded in the Philippines with environmental awareness as its theme. Nicole Faria became the first Indian to win Miss Earth, in 2010.

These four are together called the Big Four international pageants. In India the national contest that sends a representative to Miss World is Femina Miss India, run by the Femina magazine of the Times group and held since 1964; the winner of the national title and the runners up are sent to different international pageants, and the division changes from time to time. India has hosted Miss World twice, at Bangalore in 1996 and at Mumbai in 2024.

Why the pageants appear in general studies

Beyond the lists, two themes come up. The first is the social debate: the Bangalore contest of 1996 drew large protests and a court case, and pageants are regularly discussed in essay papers on the commercialisation of beauty and on advertising. The second is what the winners did afterwards. Reita Faria practised medicine; Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra became leading film actors, and Priyanka Chopra later worked as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund; Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta also moved into films. For a one mark question, however, only the name, the title and the year are needed, so build the two tables above first and read the rest around them.

Exam Point of View

Questions here are almost always a name, a title and a year. Expect the first Indian winner of each pageant, where Reita Faria goes with Miss World in 1966 and Sushmita Sen with Miss Universe in 1994. Expect the double years 1994 and 2000, and expect the two names within a year to be swapped in the options, since Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra belong to Miss World while Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta belong to Miss Universe. Expect founding facts: Eric Morley and 1951 for Miss World, Long Beach and 1952 for Miss Universe, and Beauty with a Purpose as the Miss World motto. Expect the Big Four to be listed, with Femina Miss India offered as a false member. Avoid relying on the latest winner of any pageant, which changes every year; the historical list does not.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Awards & HonoursEasy

Who was the first Indian woman to win the Miss World title?

  1. A.Reita Faria
  2. B.Aishwarya Rai
  3. C.Sushmita Sen
  4. D.Diana Hayden
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Reita Faria

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Reita Faria. Reita Faria won Miss World in 1966 and was the first Indian and indeed the first Asian woman to hold the title. She was a medical student from Bombay, used the prize to complete her studies and practised as a doctor instead of entering films, which makes her story a favourite with question setters. Option B, Aishwarya Rai, won Miss World much later, in 1994, and is the second Indian to do so. Option C, Sushmita Sen, is a strong distractor because she also won in 1994, but her title was Miss Universe, not Miss World, and she was the first Indian to win that one. Option D, Diana Hayden, won Miss World in 1997, the third Indian winner. The order of India's Miss World winners is Reita Faria, Aishwarya Rai, Diana Hayden, Yukta Mookhey, Priyanka Chopra and Manushi Chhillar.

Q2.Awards & HonoursEasy

Who was the first Indian woman to be crowned Miss Universe?

  1. A.Lara Dutta
  2. B.Sushmita Sen
  3. C.Harnaaz Sandhu
  4. D.Yukta Mookhey
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sushmita Sen

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Sushmita Sen. Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe in 1994 at Manila in the Philippines, the first Indian to take that crown, and in the same year Aishwarya Rai won Miss World, so 1994 is the year India held both titles. Option A, Lara Dutta, won Miss Universe in 2000 at Nicosia in Cyprus and is therefore the second Indian winner, not the first. Option C, Harnaaz Sandhu, won Miss Universe in 2021 at Eilat in Israel, ending a gap of twenty one years, and is the third Indian winner. Option D, Yukta Mookhey, won Miss World in 1999 and belongs to the other pageant altogether, which is the standard trap in this question. India's three Miss Universe winners, in order, are Sushmita Sen in 1994, Lara Dutta in 2000 and Harnaaz Sandhu in 2021.

Q3.Awards & HonoursMedium

The Miss World pageant was founded in 1951 by

  1. A.Julia Morley
  2. B.Eric Morley
  3. C.Donald Trump
  4. D.Catalina Swimwear
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Eric Morley

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Eric Morley. Eric Morley organised the first Miss World contest in the United Kingdom in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain, intending it as a single event; its success made it an annual pageant. Option A, Julia Morley, is his wife, who has led the Miss World organisation since his death and is associated with the Beauty with a Purpose charitable programme, so she runs the pageant but did not found it. Option C, Donald Trump, owned the rival Miss Universe Organization from 1996 to 2015, a different contest and a much later period. Option D, Catalina Swimwear, is the American swimwear brand connected with the beginning of Miss Universe in 1952, again the other pageant. Fix the pair in memory: Miss World 1951 with Eric Morley in Britain, Miss Universe 1952 with a swimwear company in California.

Q4.Awards & HonoursMedium

In which year did India win both the Miss World and the Miss Universe titles for the first time?

  1. A.1966
  2. B.1994
  3. C.2000
  4. D.2017
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 1994

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1994. In 1994 Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe at Manila and Aishwarya Rai won Miss World at Sun City in South Africa, the first time India held both crowns in a single year. Option A, 1966, is the year of Reita Faria's Miss World win, India's first in any international pageant, but India had no Miss Universe title then. Option C, 2000, is the second such double year, when Lara Dutta won Miss Universe and Priyanka Chopra won Miss World, and Dia Mirza added Miss Asia Pacific; it is the strongest distractor because the question asks for the first time. Option D, 2017, is the year of Manushi Chhillar's Miss World win, which came alone. Remember the two double years as 1994 and 2000, and keep 1994 as the first of them.

Q5.Awards & HonoursEasy

Which Indian won the Miss World title in 2017?

  1. A.Manushi Chhillar
  2. B.Harnaaz Sandhu
  3. C.Nicole Faria
  4. D.Dia Mirza
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Manushi Chhillar

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Manushi Chhillar. Manushi Chhillar of Haryana won Miss World in 2017 at Sanya in China, bringing the title back to India after a gap of seventeen years since Priyanka Chopra's win in 2000. Option B, Harnaaz Sandhu, won Miss Universe in 2021 and belongs to the other pageant, which makes her the commonest wrong answer here. Option C, Nicole Faria, won Miss Earth in 2010 and was the first Indian to win that title, a third pageant of the Big Four; her surname also invites confusion with Reita Faria, who won Miss World in 1966 and is not related to her. Option D, Dia Mirza, won Miss Asia Pacific in 2000, in the same year as the Indian wins at Miss Universe and Miss World. Matching each name to its own pageant is the whole task in this question.

Q6.Awards & HonoursMedium

Beauty with a Purpose is the motto of which international pageant?

  1. A.Miss Universe
  2. B.Miss World
  3. C.Miss Earth
  4. D.Miss International
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Miss World

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Miss World. Beauty with a Purpose is the charitable arm and the motto of the Miss World organisation, introduced in the nineteen seventies, under which contestants present social projects in their own countries and the work counts in the judging. Option A, Miss Universe, has used several slogans over the years but not this one, and its identity is tied to its American origin in 1952 rather than to a charity programme. Option C, Miss Earth, founded in the Philippines in 2001, is the pageant built around environmental awareness, and its winners campaign on climate and conservation; the theme is close enough to make it a tempting answer. Option D, Miss International, held mainly in Japan since 1960, promotes goodwill and cultural exchange. Pairing each pageant with its own theme separates the four quickly.

Q7.Awards & HonoursHard

The first Miss Universe pageant, held in 1952, took place in which city?

  1. A.New York
  2. B.Long Beach, California
  3. C.Miami
  4. D.Los Angeles
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Long Beach, California

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Long Beach, California. The first Miss Universe contest was held at Long Beach in California in 1952, organised by an American swimwear company that wanted to promote its products, and Armi Kuusela of Finland was crowned the first Miss Universe. Option A, New York, is where the pageant's organisation was later based for many years, which is why it feels like the right answer, but the first contest was not held there. Option C, Miami, has hosted later editions of the pageant and is strongly associated with pageantry in the United States, again a later connection. Option D, Los Angeles, is in the same state as Long Beach and only a short distance away, which makes it the most difficult option to rule out; the contest was specifically at Long Beach. The year 1952 and the city Long Beach should be learnt together.

Q8.Awards & HonoursHard

Nicole Faria, in 2010, became the first Indian to win which title?

  1. A.Miss World
  2. B.Miss Universe
  3. C.Miss Earth
  4. D.Miss International
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Miss Earth

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Miss Earth. Nicole Faria won Miss Earth in 2010 and was the first and so far the only Indian to take that crown. Miss Earth was founded in the Philippines in 2001 and is built around environmental awareness, so its winners spend the year campaigning on conservation and climate. Option A, Miss World, has been won by six Indians between 1966 and 2017, so no win in 2010 could have been a first. Option B, Miss Universe, had already been won by Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000, so 2010 is not a first there either. Option D, Miss International, is the fourth of the Big Four, held mainly in Japan since 1960, and India has not won it. The surname Faria is the deliberate trap, since Reita Faria won Miss World in 1966 and the two are unrelated.

Q9.Awards & HonoursMedium

In which Indian city was the Miss World pageant held for the first time, in 1996?

  1. A.Mumbai
  2. B.Bangalore
  3. C.New Delhi
  4. D.Hyderabad
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Bangalore

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Bangalore. The Miss World contest of 1996 was held at Bangalore, the first time the pageant came to India, and it is remembered as much for the protests and the court proceedings around it as for the contest itself; it became a standard example in debates on the commercialisation of beauty. Option A, Mumbai, hosted the pageant much later, in 2024, so it is the second Indian host city and the trap for candidates who remember only the more recent event. Option C, New Delhi, has hosted the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games but not Miss World. Option D, Hyderabad, hosted the only Afro-Asian Games in 2003 and many other international events, but not this pageant. Keep the pair in mind as Bangalore 1996 first and Mumbai 2024 second.

Q10.Awards & HonoursMedium

Which pair correctly matches the winners of 2000?

  1. A.Lara Dutta won Miss World and Priyanka Chopra won Miss Universe
  2. B.Priyanka Chopra won Miss World and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe
  3. C.Both titles were won by Priyanka Chopra
  4. D.Yukta Mookhey won Miss World and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Priyanka Chopra won Miss World and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Priyanka Chopra won Miss World and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe. The year 2000 was the second time India held both crowns, with Priyanka Chopra crowned Miss World at London and Lara Dutta crowned Miss Universe at Nicosia in Cyprus; Dia Mirza also won Miss Asia Pacific the same year. Option A reverses the two names and is the exact trap the question is built on, so read the titles before the names. Option C is wrong because no contestant has won both titles, which are held in different countries by different organisations in the same year. Option D is wrong on the first half: Yukta Mookhey won Miss World in 1999, the year before, though the Lara Dutta half of the statement is correct. A half correct option is the most dangerous kind in a matching question.

Q11.Awards & HonoursHard

Which four pageants are together called the Big Four international beauty pageants?

  1. A.Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International
  2. B.Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Asia Pacific and Femina Miss India
  3. C.Miss Universe, Miss Earth, Miss Supranational and Femina Miss India
  4. D.Miss World, Miss Earth, Miss Asia Pacific and Miss International
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International. These four are the oldest and most widely covered international pageants: Miss World from 1951 in Britain, Miss Universe from 1952 in the United States, Miss International from 1960 and held mainly in Japan, and Miss Earth from 2001 in the Philippines. Option B is wrong because Femina Miss India is India's national pageant, which selects the representative, and cannot be an international contest. Option C is wrong for the same reason and also because Miss Supranational, although a well known pageant, is not counted in the Big Four. Option D leaves out Miss Universe, the second oldest of the four, and puts Miss Asia Pacific in its place, which is a regional contest. Learning the four founding years in order fixes the set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Miss World and Miss Universe?

They are separate contests run by different organisations. Miss World was founded in 1951 by Eric Morley in Britain and runs the Beauty with a Purpose charitable programme. Miss Universe was founded in 1952 by an American swimwear company and was first held at Long Beach in California. A country can win both in the same year, as India did in 1994 and 2000, but no person can win both.

How many times has India won Miss World?

Six times between 1966 and 2017: Reita Faria in 1966, Aishwarya Rai in 1994, Diana Hayden in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999, Priyanka Chopra in 2000 and Manushi Chhillar in 2017. Reita Faria was the first Asian woman to win the title.

Which Indians have won Miss Universe?

Three: Sushmita Sen in 1994, who was the first Indian to win it, Lara Dutta in 2000 and Harnaaz Sandhu in 2021. Between Lara Dutta and Harnaaz Sandhu there was a gap of twenty one years.

What are the Big Four international beauty pageants?

Miss World, begun in 1951; Miss Universe, begun in 1952; Miss International, begun in 1960 and held mainly in Japan; and Miss Earth, begun in 2001 in the Philippines with an environmental theme. Femina Miss India is a national contest and is not one of the four.

Which Indian was the first to win Miss Earth?

Nicole Faria, who won Miss Earth in 2010 and remains the only Indian to hold that title. Her surname often causes confusion with Reita Faria, the Miss World of 1966, although the two are not related.

Has India hosted Miss World?

Yes, twice. The pageant was held at Bangalore in 1996, the first time it came to India, an edition remembered for the protests and litigation around it, and again at Mumbai in 2024.
