Martial Arts and Traditional Sports of India: Notes
Art and culture notes on Indian martial arts and traditional sports: Kalaripayattu, Silambam, Thang-Ta, Gatka, Thoda, Mallakhamb, Kabaddi and festival games.
By GK24 Editorial Team· Published · 4 min read

Every general awareness paper carries a question that pairs a martial art or a village game with the state it comes from. The facts are simple but crowded, and candidates lose the mark by mixing up two names from the same region, most often the three martial traditions of Manipur. This note fixes each art to its state and to the one detail that identifies it, the weapon, the arena or the rule, and then does the same for the traditional sports that survive as festival contests.
What the martial traditions of India are
A martial art in the Indian sense is a trained system of combat with a fixed order of lessons, its own arena and its own weapons, handed down by a teacher. Most of these systems grew out of the fighting needs of a region: the sword and shield of the Rajput and Maratha cavalry, the staff of the Tamil country, the flexible sword of the Malabar coast. Many of them survive because they entered ritual and performance. The steps of Pari-Khanda went into the Chhau dance of eastern India, Kalaripayattu movement trains Kathakali actors, and Gatka is displayed at Sikh festivals such as Hola Mohalla. This is why the subject sits under art and culture rather than under sports.
Martial arts and the states they belong to
| Martial art | State or region | The identifying detail |
|---|---|---|
| Kalaripayattu | Kerala | Practised in an arena called a kalari; the urumi is its flexible sword |
| Silambam | Tamil Nadu | Fought with a long bamboo staff |
| Kuttu Varisai | Tamil Nadu | The empty hand branch, without weapons |
| Thang-Ta, also called Huyen Langlon | Manipur | Thang is the sword and ta the spear |
| Sarit Sarak | Manipur | The unarmed side of Huyen Langlon |
| Cheibi Gad-ga | Manipur | A leather covered stick with a shield |
| Mardani Khel | Maharashtra | Maratha art of the patta, a gauntlet sword, and the vita |
| Mallakhamb | Maharashtra | Wrestling and gymnastics on a wooden pole or a rope |
| Gatka | Punjab | The soti, a wooden stick, with the farri or shield |
| Thoda | Himachal Pradesh | Archery contest of two teams, the Pashi and the Saathi |
| Pari-Khanda | Bihar | Khanda the sword, pari the shield; feeds the Chhau dance |
| Musti Yuddha | Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh | Bare fisted fighting |
| Inbuan Wrestling | Mizoram | Belt wrestling; the knee may not be bent and kicking is barred |
| Vajra Mushti | Karnataka | Wrestling with a knuckleduster, shown at Mysore Dasara |
Four of these repay extra attention. Kalaripayattu is taught in four stages, from body conditioning to wooden weapons, then metal weapons and finally bare hands, an order that examiners sometimes ask in sequence. Mallakhamb was declared the state game of Madhya Pradesh in 2013 even though its home is Maharashtra, and that split is a favourite trap. Thoda is remembered by its two teams and by the blunt wooden arrow aimed below the knee. Inbuan is remembered by its rule against bending the knee.
Traditional sports and rural games
| Game | Where it belongs | Point to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Kabaddi | Played across India | Styles are Sanjeevani, Gaminee, Amar and the circle or Punjabi form |
| Kho-Kho | Played across India | A chasing game of nine players on the field from a side |
| Sagol Kangjei | Manipur | Held to be the forerunner of modern polo |
| Yubi Lakpi | Manipur | A greased coconut is carried to goal, much like rugby |
| Hiyang Tannaba | Manipur | Traditional boat race of the Imphal valley |
| Dhopkhel | Assam | A ball game of the spring season |
| Insuknawr | Mizoram | Rod push, a test of pure strength |
| Vallam Kali | Kerala | Snake boat race in a chundan vallam |
| Atya Patya, Langdi, Lagori | Maharashtra and the Deccan | Village team games now organised at state level |
| Gilli Danda and Pithoo | North India | Stick and ball, and the seven stone game |
Festival sports and animal sports
Some traditional contests are tied to a festival and a place, and that pairing is what papers ask. Jallikattu, the bull taming sport of Tamil Nadu, is held during the Pongal season and is most famous at Alanganallur near Madurai. Kambala is the buffalo race run through slushy paddy fields in the coastal districts of Karnataka. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the best known of Kerala snake boat races, has been rowed on Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha since 1952. The Kila Raipur Sports Festival near Ludhiana in Punjab, called the Rural Olympics, has been held since 1933. Kabaddi entered the Asian Games programme in 1990 at Beijing, where India took the gold medal.
Traditional games in Khelo India
Indigenous games were brought into the national sporting calendar through the Khelo India programme. From the 2021 edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, five indigenous disciplines were added: Gatka, Kalaripayattu, Thang-Ta, Mallakhamb and Yogasana. Learn the five as a set, because the question is usually framed as which of the following was not included.
Distinctions that decide the mark
Keep Manipur separate in your mind, since Thang-Ta, Sarit Sarak, Cheibi Gad-ga, Sagol Kangjei and Yubi Lakpi all come from that one state. Keep Tamil Nadu clear as well: Silambam uses the staff and Kuttu Varisai uses no weapon. Do not confuse Mardani Khel of Maharashtra with Gatka of Punjab, since both use a stick in practice; the Maratha art is identified by the patta. Finally, remember that Kalaripayattu is usually described as among the oldest surviving martial arts in the world, a claim that appears in options as it stands.
Exam Point of View
Three question shapes cover this chapter. The first and commonest is a match of art to state, so learn the pairs and above all keep the Manipur cluster of Thang-Ta, Sarit Sarak, Cheibi Gad-ga, Sagol Kangjei and Yubi Lakpi together. The second asks for the weapon or the arena: the urumi and the kalari for Kalaripayattu, the staff for Silambam, the soti and farri for Gatka, the patta for Mardani Khel and the pole for Mallakhamb. The third asks a festival or a place: Jallikattu with Pongal and Alanganallur, Kambala with coastal Karnataka, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race with Punnamada Lake since 1952 and the Rural Olympics with Kila Raipur in Punjab since 1933. Two traps recur. Mallakhamb is the state game of Madhya Pradesh though it comes from Maharashtra, and the five indigenous games added to the Khelo India Youth Games from 2021 are asked in the negative form, so fix the set of Gatka, Kalaripayattu, Thang-Ta, Mallakhamb and Yogasana.

Practice MCQs on this topic
Kalaripayattu, one of the oldest martial arts in the world, is associated with which Indian state?
- A.Tamil Nadu
- B.Kerala
- C.Karnataka
- D.Manipur
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Kerala
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Kerala. Kalaripayattu belongs to Kerala, takes its name from the kalari, the arena in which it is taught, and is usually described as among the oldest surviving martial arts in the world. Its signature weapon is the urumi, a long flexible sword, and its training runs from body conditioning through wooden weapons and metal weapons to bare hands. Option A is wrong because Tamil Nadu gives Silambam, fought with a bamboo staff, and Kuttu Varisai, the unarmed art. Option C is wrong; Karnataka is associated with Vajra Mushti, wrestling with a knuckleduster shown at Mysore Dasara. Option D is wrong because Manipur gives Thang-Ta, Sarit Sarak and Cheibi Gad-ga. Candidates sometimes pick Tamil Nadu because the art is southern, so fix Kalaripayattu to Kerala and to the word kalari.
Silambam, a martial art of Tamil Nadu, is practised chiefly with which of the following?
- A.A flexible sword
- B.A long bamboo staff
- C.A spear and shield
- D.A knuckleduster
Show answer
Correct answer: B. A long bamboo staff
Explanation
The correct answer is B, a long bamboo staff. Silambam is the staff art of Tamil Nadu, and the length of bamboo, usually about the height of the practitioner, is what identifies it in any list of weapons. Option A is wrong because the flexible sword is the urumi and it belongs to Kalaripayattu of Kerala, the art most often set against Silambam in the same question. Option C is wrong; the spear is the ta of Thang-Ta in Manipur and the shield appears in Gatka of Punjab as the farri and in Pari-Khanda of Bihar as the pari. Option D is wrong because the knuckleduster belongs to Vajra Mushti of Karnataka, wrestling shown during the Mysore Dasara. Since papers often ask only for the weapon, memorise the pairs of art and weapon rather than descriptions of technique.
Thang-Ta, also known as Huyen Langlon, is the traditional martial art of which state?
- A.Mizoram
- B.Nagaland
- C.Manipur
- D.Assam
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Manipur
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Manipur. Thang-Ta is the armed component of the Manipuri martial system called Huyen Langlon, where thang means sword and ta means spear, while the unarmed component is called Sarit Sarak. Option A is wrong because Mizoram is associated with Inbuan wrestling, a belt wrestling contest in which kicking is barred and the knee may not be bent, and with Insuknawr or rod push. Option B is wrong; no classical martial art in the standard examination list is fixed to Nagaland. Option D is wrong because Assam gives the traditional ball game Dhopkhel, played in the spring season, not Thang-Ta. Manipur is the densest state in this chapter, since Cheibi Gad-ga, Sagol Kangjei, Yubi Lakpi and Hiyang Tannaba all belong to it as well, so learn them as one group.
Gatka, a martial art displayed at Sikh festivals, belongs to which state?
- A.Haryana
- B.Punjab
- C.Rajasthan
- D.Jammu and Kashmir
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Punjab
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Punjab. Gatka is the Punjabi martial art fought with the soti, a wooden stick, and the farri, a shield, and it is displayed at Sikh festivals such as Hola Mohalla. It was one of the indigenous disciplines brought into the Khelo India Youth Games from the 2021 edition. Option A is wrong; Haryana is known in sport for wrestling and boxing academies but not for a distinct traditional martial art in this list. Option C is wrong because Rajasthan is associated with Rajput sword traditions and the khanda as a weapon, yet Gatka is not a Rajasthani art. Option D is wrong; no standard martial art of the examination list is assigned to Jammu and Kashmir. Do not confuse the stick of Gatka with the stick used in Mardani Khel practice in Maharashtra, whose identifying weapon is the patta.
Thoda, a traditional martial sport based on archery and contested between teams called the Pashi and the Saathi, is played in which state?
- A.Uttarakhand
- B.Sikkim
- C.Himachal Pradesh
- D.Arunachal Pradesh
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Himachal Pradesh
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Himachal Pradesh. Thoda is the archery based contest of Himachal Pradesh, played around the Baisakhi season, in which two groups called the Pashi and the Saathi shoot blunt wooden arrows aimed below the knee of the opposing players, and dance and drumming accompany the contest. Option A is wrong; Uttarakhand shares the western Himalayan culture but Thoda is fixed to Himachal Pradesh in every standard list. Option B is wrong because Sikkim is associated with archery as a popular sport of Buddhist communities, yet Thoda as a named tradition is not Sikkimese. Option D is wrong because archery in Arunachal Pradesh and the north east generally is not organised as Thoda. The team names Pashi and Saathi are the surest way to identify this question, so learn them along with the state.
Mardani Khel, the martial art identified with the patta and the vita, developed in which state?
- A.Maharashtra
- B.Gujarat
- C.Madhya Pradesh
- D.Goa
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Maharashtra
Explanation
The correct answer is A, Maharashtra. Mardani Khel is the Maratha art of armed combat from Maharashtra, and it is identified by the patta, a straight sword fixed to a gauntlet that covers the forearm, and by the vita, a corded javelin. It grew out of the fighting methods of the hill forts of the Deccan. Option B is wrong; Gujarat has stick dances and folk contests but Mardani Khel is not placed there. Option C is wrong, and it is the useful distractor, because Madhya Pradesh appears in this chapter only as the state that declared Mallakhamb its state game in 2013. Option D is wrong because Goa has no distinct art of this name in the examination list. Fix the pair of patta and Maharashtra, since the weapon alone is often enough to answer.
Inbuan, a form of wrestling in which kicking is barred and the knee may not be bent, is a traditional sport of which state?
- A.Meghalaya
- B.Mizoram
- C.Tripura
- D.Manipur
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Mizoram
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Mizoram. Inbuan is the belt wrestling of Mizoram, in which a wrestler grips a belt worn round the waist of the opponent and must lift him off the ground; kicking is not allowed and the knee may not be bent, and stepping outside the circle loses the bout. Option A is wrong because Meghalaya is known for archery contests but not for Inbuan. Option C is wrong; Tripura has its own folk games yet Inbuan is not among them. Option D is wrong, and it is the sharpest distractor, because Manipur has a long wrestling tradition of its own called Mukna, and candidates who remember only that the north east is involved often choose Manipur. Mizoram also gives Insuknawr, the rod push contest, so keep the two Mizo entries together.
Mallakhamb, a sport of wrestling and gymnastics performed on a pole, was declared the state game of which state in 2013?
- A.Maharashtra
- B.Chhattisgarh
- C.Madhya Pradesh
- D.Rajasthan
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Madhya Pradesh
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh declared Mallakhamb its state game in 2013, and the question survives in paper after paper because the art itself is associated with Maharashtra, where it was revived in the nineteenth century as training for wrestlers. Option A is therefore the trap: Maharashtra is the home of the art but it is not the state that adopted it as its state game. Option B is wrong; Chhattisgarh has no such declaration on record in the standard lists. Option D is wrong because Rajasthan is not linked to Mallakhamb at all. Read the stem carefully in such questions, since a paper setter can ask either where the art comes from or which state adopted it, and the two answers are different. Mallakhamb was also among the indigenous games added to the Khelo India Youth Games from 2021.
Sagol Kangjei, a traditional sport of Manipur, is regarded as the forerunner of which modern game?
- A.Hockey
- B.Polo
- C.Rugby
- D.Archery
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Polo
Explanation
The correct answer is B, polo. Sagol Kangjei is the Manipuri game played on ponies with a stick and a ball and is widely held to be the forerunner of modern polo, which British officers took up in Manipur and Cachar in the nineteenth century before it spread across the world; the Mapal Kangjeibung ground at Imphal is among the oldest polo grounds anywhere. Option A is wrong because field hockey developed separately and has no such Manipuri ancestry. Option C is wrong, though it is a reasonable guess, because the Manipuri game that resembles rugby is Yubi Lakpi, in which players carry a greased coconut to the goal. Option D is wrong; the archery tradition of the hills is Thoda in Himachal Pradesh. The word sagol means pony in Manipuri, which is a useful hook for remembering the answer.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the best known of the snake boat races of Kerala, is held on which lake?
- A.Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom
- B.Ashtamudi Lake at Kollam
- C.Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha
- D.Sasthamkotta Lake
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race has been rowed on Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha since 1952, when it was instituted after Jawaharlal Nehru watched a race there, and the boats used are the long snake boats called chundan vallam. Option A is wrong in the form given, because although Punnamada is part of the wider Vembanad backwater system, the race is not held at Kumarakom and the paper expects the name Punnamada. Option B is wrong; Ashtamudi Lake at Kollam hosts its own boat races but not the Nehru Trophy. Option D is wrong because Sasthamkotta is a freshwater lake and a Ramsar site, not a venue for this race. The general name for the Kerala boat race is Vallam Kali, and the Nehru Trophy is one event within that tradition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the oldest martial art of India and where does it come from?
Kalaripayattu of Kerala is usually described as among the oldest surviving martial arts in the world. It is practised in an arena called a kalari, is taught in stages from body conditioning to wooden weapons, metal weapons and bare hands, and its best known weapon is the urumi, a flexible sword.
Which martial arts come from Manipur?
Thang-Ta, also known as Huyen Langlon, in which thang is the sword and ta the spear; Sarit Sarak, its unarmed branch; and Cheibi Gad-ga, fought with a leather covered stick and a shield. Manipur also gives the traditional sports Sagol Kangjei, Yubi Lakpi and the boat race Hiyang Tannaba.
Mallakhamb is the state game of which state?
Madhya Pradesh declared Mallakhamb its state game in 2013, although the art itself is associated with Maharashtra. This split between the home of the art and the state that adopted it is a standard examination trap.
Which traditional games were added to the Khelo India Youth Games?
