RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Which of the following is an amphoteric oxide?

  1. A.Aluminium oxide
  2. B.Iron (II) oxide
  3. C.Magnesium oxide
  4. D.Carbon dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Aluminium oxide

An amphoteric oxide reacts with both acids and bases to give a salt and water. Aluminium oxide dissolves in hydrochloric acid to give aluminium chloride and in sodium hydroxide to give sodium aluminate, so it behaves as a base in one case and as an acid in the other.

Which among the following compounds has a double bond?

  1. A.Ethane
  2. B.Methane
  3. C.Acetylene
  4. D.Ethylene
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Ethylene

Ethylene, also called ethene, has the formula C2H4, and its two carbon atoms share two pairs of electrons, which is a carbon-carbon double bond made of one sigma and one pi bond; it is the simplest alkene.

Which of the following is NOT a double displacement reaction?

  1. A.BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2HCl
  2. B.2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
  3. C.CuSO4 + H2S → CuS + H2SO4
  4. D.NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

In a double displacement reaction two compounds exchange their ions, so both reactants must be compounds. Here hydrogen and oxygen are elements combining to form a single product, water, which makes it a combination reaction and also a combustion and redox reaction, but certainly not a double displacement.

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan doubling project approved by Indian Railways lies on which corridor?

  1. A.Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor
  2. B.Golden Quadrilateral Corridor
  3. C.Dedicated Freight Corridor East
  4. D.Rail Sagar Corridor
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor

The stretch is only 6 km long but it carries high-grade iron ore and pellets from the Bolani mines of SAIL and from private sidings towards steel plants and ports, and the doubling has been cleared at a completion cost of 122 crore rupees.

Which of the following statements is correct about suspension?

  1. A.A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture.
  2. B.Solids dispersed in gas are called suspensions.
  3. C.Particles of a suspension are invisible to the naked eye.
  4. D.A suspension is a homogeneous mixture.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture.

In a suspension the particles of the solute are large enough to be seen and do not dissolve; they stay spread through the liquid only while it is stirred and settle to the bottom when it is left standing.

What is tissue?

  1. A.Cells which are similar in origin but dissimilar in form and function.
  2. B.Cells which are dissimilar in origin but similar in form and function.
  3. C.Cells which are dissimilar in origin, form, and function.
  4. D.Cells which are similar in origin, form, and function.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Cells which are similar in origin, form, and function.

A tissue is a group of cells that come from the same source, look alike and work together at one job.

Which of the following is NOT the combined form of Carbon?

  1. A.Chalk
  2. B.Marble
  3. C.Diamond
  4. D.Dolomite
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Diamond

Carbon occurs in nature in two ways, free and combined. In the free state the element stands alone, as in diamond, graphite and coal; diamond is pure carbon whose atoms are each joined to four others in a rigid three dimensional network, which is why it is the hardest natural…

Which of the following is the main thinking part of the human brain?

  1. A.Hind-brain
  2. B.Cerebellum
  3. C.Mid-brain
  4. D.Fore-brain
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Fore-brain

The brain is divided into fore-brain, mid-brain and hind-brain, and the fore-brain is the main thinking part. Its largest portion is the cerebrum, whose folded outer layer holds separate areas for hearing, sight, smell and touch, for reasoning and memory, and for ordering voluntary movement.

Which of the following statements is NOT true of Meiosis?

  1. A.As a consequence of Meiosis, the number of chromosomes is doubled in the resulting cells.
  2. B.Meiosis takes place in gonads for production of gametes.
  3. C.Meiosis takes place in two phases.
  4. D.During Meiosis, the genes of the parent cells are mixed in the resulting cells.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. As a consequence of Meiosis, the number of chromosomes is doubled in the resulting cells.

It is a reduction division: one parent cell with the full, diploid set gives four cells with half the number of chromosomes, the haploid set.

When 1 litre of water is cooled from 4°C to 0°C, its volume _____.

  1. A.first decreases and then increases
  2. B.remains the same
  3. C.increases
  4. D.decreases
