RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

If a wire is placed parallel to the lines of force in a magnetic field and a current flows in the wire, then

  1. A.the wire will experience a force in the direction of the magnetic field
  2. B.the wire will not experience any force at all
  3. C.the wire will experience a force in the direction opposite to the field
  4. D.it will experience a force in the direction perpendicular to the lines of force
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the wire will not experience any force at all

The force on a current carrying conductor kept in a magnetic field is given by F equal to B I L sin theta, where theta is the angle between the direction of the current and the direction of the field.

The linear momentum of a system of rigid bodies will be conserved, if

  1. A.the system is in a gravitational field
  2. B.no external forces act on the system
  3. C.kinetic energy is conserved
  4. D.none of the above
Show answer
Correct answer: B. no external forces act on the system

The law of conservation of linear momentum follows straight from Newton's second law: the rate of change of the momentum of a system equals the net external force acting on it, so when that force is zero the total momentum stays the same in size and in direction.

In C.G.S unit, dynamic viscosity is expressed as:

  1. A.Poise
  2. B.Pa-s
  3. C.Stoke
  4. D.None of the above
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Poise

Dynamic viscosity measures how strongly a fluid resists flowing, and in the centimetre gram second system it is measured in poise, a unit named after the French physician Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille, who studied the flow of blood in narrow tubes.

The magnetic effect of current was discovered by

  1. A.Maxwell
  2. B.Fleming
  3. C.Oersted
  4. D.Faraday
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Oersted

In 1820 the Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted saw that a compass needle kept near a wire swung aside the moment a current flowed through the wire, and swung the other way when the current was reversed.

Q390.General ScienceEasy

The acid present in the sting of an ant is

  1. A.Formic acid
  2. B.Citric acid
  3. C.Lactic acid
  4. D.Tartaric acid
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Formic acid

The sting of an ant and the hairs of the nettle plant inject formic acid, also called methanoic acid, which is why the skin burns; rubbing on a mild base such as baking soda or the leaf of the dock plant relieves it by neutralising the acid.

Q391.General ScienceEasy

What is the chemical formula of baking soda?

  1. A.Na2CO3
  2. B.NaHCO3
  3. C.NaOH
  4. D.CaOCl2
Show answer
Correct answer: B. NaHCO3

Baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate, a mild, non corrosive base used as an antacid, as an ingredient of baking powder along with a mild edible acid such as tartaric acid, and in soda acid fire extinguishers, where it releases carbon dioxide.

Q394.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · 31 Aug 2019Easy

Which of the following contains citric acid?

  1. A.Tomato
  2. B.Orange
  3. C.Tamarind
  4. D.Sour milk
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Orange

Citrus fruits such as orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit owe their sharp sour taste to citric acid, which is the acid textbooks name for this family and the one examiners expect here.

Q395.General ScienceMedium

What is the shape of a methane molecule?

  1. A.Linear
  2. B.Trigonal planar
  3. C.Tetrahedral
  4. D.Pyramidal
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Tetrahedral

In methane the carbon atom is joined to four hydrogen atoms by four single bonds and has no lone pair, so the four bonding pairs push one another as far apart as possible and point to the corners of a regular tetrahedron, with bond angles of about 109.5 degrees.

Q399.General ScienceEasy

A chemical bond formed by the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another is called a:

  1. A.Covalent bond
  2. B.Ionic bond
  3. C.Coordinate bond
  4. D.Hydrogen bond
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ionic bond

In an ionic or electrovalent bond a metal atom loses one or more electrons to a non-metal atom; the metal becomes a positive ion and the non-metal a negative ion, and the electrostatic attraction between the two holds the compound together, as in sodium chloride and magnesium oxide.

Which of the following is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of vegetable oil?

  1. A.Pb
  2. B.Ni
  3. C.H2
  4. D.He
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ni

Vegetable oils contain unsaturated fatty acids with carbon-carbon double bonds, and when hydrogen is passed through the oil at about 60 degrees Celsius in the presence of finely divided nickel, the double bonds add hydrogen and become saturated, turning the liquid oil into semi-solid vanaspati.
