RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

RRB ALP GK Questions with Answers

Q441.General ScienceEasy

Electromagnetic induction was discovered by

  1. A.Hans Christian Oersted
  2. B.Michael Faraday
  3. C.Alessandro Volta
  4. D.James Watt
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Michael Faraday

In 1831 Faraday showed that when the magnetic flux linked with a closed coil changes, whether by moving a magnet, moving the coil or changing the current in a nearby coil, a current is induced in it.

Fleming's left hand rule is used to find the direction of

  1. A.the induced current in a generator
  2. B.the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field
  3. C.the magnetic field around a solenoid
  4. D.the potential difference across a resistor
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field

In Fleming's left hand rule the forefinger, the middle finger and the thumb of the left hand are held at right angles to one another: the forefinger points along the magnetic field, the middle finger along the current, and the thumb then gives the direction of the force.

Q443.General ScienceMedium

The direction of the magnetic field produced around a straight current-carrying conductor is given by

  1. A.Fleming's left hand rule
  2. B.the right hand thumb rule
  3. C.Fleming's right hand rule
  4. D.Lenz's law
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the right hand thumb rule

Hold the conductor in your right hand with the thumb stretched along the direction of the conventional current; the way your fingers curl round the wire is the direction of the concentric magnetic field lines.

Which of the following is NOT based on the heating effect of current?

  1. A.Electric heater
  2. B.Electric bulb (with filament)
  3. C.Electric iron
  4. D.Microwave
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Microwave

A microwave oven does not cook by passing a current through a resistance. It generates microwaves in a magnetron, and these waves make the water molecules in the food rotate rapidly, so the food heats from within by dielectric heating.

What is the work done to move a unit charge from one point to another in an electric circuit carrying some current, between those two points?

  1. A.Pressure distance
  2. B.Potential difference
  3. C.Potential distance
  4. D.Pressure difference
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Potential difference

The potential difference between two points in a circuit is defined as the work done in moving a unit positive charge from one point to the other.

If the potential difference across the ends of a conductor is halved, what happens to the current flowing through it?

  1. A.It gets increased
  2. B.It gets doubled
  3. C.It gets decreased
  4. D.It gets halved
Show answer
Correct answer: D. It gets halved

By Ohm's law, at a constant temperature the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its ends, since the current equals the potential difference divided by the resistance.

The force of attraction between two objects of masses 'M' and 'm' which lie at a distance 'd' from each other is directly proportional to the-

  1. A.Sum of the masses of objects M + m
  2. B.Product of the masses of objects M × m
  3. C.Difference between masses of objects M – m
  4. D.Sum of the squares of masses of objects M² + m²
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Product of the masses of objects M × m

Newton's universal law of gravitation states that every two bodies attract each other with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, written F = GMm/d².

What is the full form of EBCDIC?

  1. A.Extended Binary Control Decimal Interchange Code
  2. B.Enhanced Binary Control Data Interchange Code
  3. C.Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code
  4. D.Enhanced Binary Coded Data Integration Code
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code

EBCDIC is an 8-bit character encoding scheme developed by IBM in 1963 for its mainframe and midrange computers. Because it uses 8 bits for each character it can represent 256 different characters, twice as many as the 7-bit ASCII code, which handles 128.

Which of the following communication modes supports two-way traffic, but in only one direction at a time?

  1. A.Simplex
  2. B.Half-duplex
  3. C.Three-quarters duplex
  4. D.All of these
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Half-duplex

Data can travel between two devices in three modes. In half-duplex mode both devices can send and receive, but only one of them may transmit at any given moment, so the traffic takes turns; a walkie-talkie is the standard example, and older hubs and CB radio worked the same way.

What is aerobic respiration?

  1. A.Respiration without molecular oxygen
  2. B.Respiration through skin
  3. C.Respiration in presence of oxygen
  4. D.Respiration through gills
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Respiration in presence of oxygen

Aerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen, giving carbon dioxide, water and a large amount of energy.

To which of the following family of elements does potassium belong?

  1. A.Alkaline earth metals
  2. B.Alkali metals
  3. C.Noble gases
  4. D.Halogens
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Alkali metals

Potassium sits in group 1 of the periodic table along with lithium, sodium, rubidium, caesium and francium, and these six are called the alkali metals because their oxides and hydroxides dissolve in water to give strong alkalis.
