RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Convert sound energy into electrical energy

  1. A.By microphone
  2. B.By loudspeaker
  3. C.By sonometer
  4. D.By earphone
Show answer
Correct answer: A. By microphone

A microphone is a transducer: sound waves strike a thin diaphragm, the diaphragm vibrates, and that mechanical vibration is turned into a varying electric signal.

Metals come under which class of fire?

  1. A.Class B
  2. B.Class C
  3. C.Class D
  4. D.Class A
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Class D

Fires are grouped by what is burning, and Class D covers burning metals such as magnesium, sodium, potassium, titanium and aluminium powder.

What are the products formed during photosynthesis?

  1. A.Glucose, Water and Oxygen
  2. B.Glucose and Oxygen
  3. C.Starch and Oxygen
  4. D.Starch, Water and Oxygen
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Glucose, Water and Oxygen

Green plants use sunlight trapped by chlorophyll to join carbon dioxide and water, and the balanced equation reads six molecules of carbon dioxide plus twelve of water giving one molecule of glucose, six of oxygen and six of water.

With the increase in the temperature of a liquid:

  1. A.Surface tension increases and viscosity decreases
  2. B.Surface tension and viscosity both decrease
  3. C.Surface tension and viscosity both increase
  4. D.Surface tension decreases and viscosity increases
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Surface tension and viscosity both decrease

Heating a liquid makes its molecules move faster and sit a little further apart, so the attraction between them weakens, and both properties depend on that attraction.

Which of the following elements is NOT suitable for the fabrication of a light emitting diode structure?

  1. A.Gallium phosphide
  2. B.Indium gallium nitride
  3. C.Germanium
  4. D.Gallium arsenide
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Germanium

Germanium is not used to build light emitting diodes because it is an indirect band gap semiconductor, so an electron falling back across the gap gives up most of its energy as heat in the crystal rather than as light.

Which of the following statements is NOT correct about surface tension?

  1. A.Surface tension is typically measured in dynes/cm.
  2. B.The shape of water drop is spherical due to surface tension.
  3. C.At room temperature, surface tension of water is less than ethyl alcohol.
  4. D.The cohesive forces between liquid molecules are responsible for the phenomenon known as surface tension.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. At room temperature, surface tension of water is less than ethyl alcohol.

This is the statement that is not correct, because water has a much higher surface tension than ethyl alcohol.

A cylinder of mass m rolls down an inclined plane from a height h above a horizontal level. If the velocity of the axis of the cylinder is v when it reaches the lower level, then

  1. A.v = gh
  2. B.v = mgh
  3. C.v = √(2gh)
  4. D.v < √(2gh)
Show answer
Correct answer: D. v < √(2gh)

A body that slides down a smooth slope turns all of its potential energy mgh into translational kinetic energy and reaches the bottom with a speed equal to the square root of 2gh.
