RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Which one of the following is NOT true of WBCs?

  1. A.Size 18-25 micrometres
  2. B.They act as "soldiers" and eat up the germs
  3. C.Nucleus - Nucleated
  4. D.Shape - Irregular shape
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Size 18-25 micrometres

White blood cells are usually about 8 to 20 micrometres across, larger than red cells but not in the range given here.

Q425.General ScienceHard

Mendeleev left gaps in his periodic table and predicted the properties of eka-boron, eka-aluminium and eka-silicon. These elements were later discovered as:

  1. A.Sodium, potassium and calcium
  2. B.Cobalt, nickel and copper
  3. C.Scandium, gallium and germanium
  4. D.Radium, radon and rhenium
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Scandium, gallium and germanium

Mendeleev arranged the elements by increasing atomic mass in 1869 and left blank spaces where his pattern demanded an element that was not yet known.

Q427.General ScienceEasy

Isotopes of an element have the same:

  1. A.Atomic number but different mass number
  2. B.Mass number but different atomic number
  3. C.Number of neutrons but different number of protons
  4. D.Number of protons and the same number of neutrons
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Atomic number but different mass number

Isotopes are atoms of the same element, so they have the same number of protons and therefore the same atomic number, but they carry different numbers of neutrons, which makes their mass numbers differ.

Q431.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · 23 May 2019, Shift 1Medium

Which of the following elements has the highest electronegativity?

  1. A.Fluorine
  2. B.Bromine
  3. C.Iodine
  4. D.Chlorine
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Fluorine

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons towards itself. It increases from left to right across a period, as nuclear charge grows, and decreases down a group, as each new shell puts the outer electrons further from the nucleus.

Alkali metals are assigned which group in the Modern Periodic Table?

  1. A.Second group
  2. B.Eighteenth group
  3. C.Third group
  4. D.First group
Show answer
Correct answer: D. First group

The alkali metals are lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and francium. Each has a single electron in its outermost shell, loses it readily to form a positive ion, and therefore stands in group 1 of the modern periodic table.

Q434.General ScienceMedium

Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering experiment on a thin gold foil led to which conclusion?

  1. A.Electrons are embedded in a sphere of positive charge
  2. B.The atom is indivisible
  3. C.Electrons revolve in fixed permitted orbits
  4. D.Almost all the mass and the positive charge lie in a tiny nucleus
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Almost all the mass and the positive charge lie in a tiny nucleus

Most alpha particles passed straight through the foil, a few were deflected through small angles and about one in twenty thousand bounced back.

Who among the following discovered the neutrons?

  1. A.J. Chadwick
  2. B.E. Goldstein
  3. C.Neils Bohr
  4. D.Ernest Rutherford
Show answer
Correct answer: A. J. Chadwick

James Chadwick discovered the neutron in 1932 by bombarding beryllium with alpha particles and showing that the radiation produced consisted of neutral particles of nearly the same mass as the proton.

Who coined the word 'atom'?

  1. A.Democritus
  2. B.Thomson
  3. C.E Rutherford
  4. D.John Dalton
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Democritus

The Greek philosopher Democritus, working in the fifth century before the common era, argued that matter could be divided only up to a limit, and he called that smallest indivisible particle atomos, from which the word atom comes.

Q437.General ScienceMedium

The resistance of a uniform metallic wire is

  1. A.directly proportional to its area of cross section
  2. B.inversely proportional to its length
  3. C.directly proportional to its length and inversely proportional to its area of cross section
  4. D.independent of both length and area of cross section
Show answer
Correct answer: C. directly proportional to its length and inversely proportional to its area of cross section

The resistance of a wire equals the resistivity of the material multiplied by the length and divided by the area of cross section.

Q439.General ScienceHard

Two magnetic field lines can never intersect each other because

  1. A.the field would then be zero at that point
  2. B.there would be two directions of the field at the same point, which is impossible
  3. C.the lines are imaginary
  4. D.the magnetic poles always exist in pairs
Show answer
Correct answer: B. there would be two directions of the field at the same point, which is impossible

The tangent drawn to a magnetic field line at any point gives the direction of the field at that point.
