Airports, Ports and Metro Cities of India: Static GK
Static GK notes for exams: India’s international airports and their names, the major seaports of both coasts and their features, and the metro rail cities in order.
By GK24 Editorial Team· Published · 4 min read

Transport infrastructure is a standing favourite in static general knowledge, because the answers are names and places that do not change: which airport serves which city, which port lies on which coast, and which city opened the country's first metro. SSC, Railway and State papers lift one or two questions a paper from this ground, usually in the form of a matching pair. This note collects the airports named after national figures, the major seaports of both coasts with the feature each is known for, and the metro rail systems of India in the order they opened.
Airports and the civil aviation framework
Civil airports in India are run largely by the Airports Authority of India, a statutory body formed in 1995 by merging the International Airports Authority of India with the National Airports Authority. The safety and licensing regulator is the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, while airport security is the responsibility of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The regional connectivity scheme UDAN, which stands for Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik, was announced under the National Civil Aviation Policy of 2016 to link small and unserved airfields, and its first flight connected Shimla with Delhi in April 2017.
| Airport | City | Point to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Indira Gandhi International | Delhi | The busiest airport in India |
| Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International | Mumbai | Formerly Sahar airport |
| Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International | Kolkata | Known locally as Dum Dum |
| Kempegowda International | Bengaluru | Named after the founder of the city |
| Rajiv Gandhi International | Hyderabad | Located at Shamshabad |
| Cochin International | Kochi | Built under a public private partnership; runs on solar power |
| Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International | Ahmedabad | Gujarat's principal international gateway |
| Veer Savarkar International | Port Blair | Serves the Andaman and Nicobar Islands |
| Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International | Guwahati | The main gateway to the North East |
Cochin International Airport is the one most often asked about: it was the first airport in India built under a public private partnership, and it became the first in the world to run entirely on solar power, for which it received the Champion of the Earth award of the United Nations Environment Programme in 2018.
The major ports of India
Ports are divided between major ports, which come under the Union government through the Major Port Authorities Act of 2021, and the far larger number of non major or minor ports, which the coastal states administer through their maritime boards. The Sagarmala programme, launched in 2015, is the central scheme for port led development, modernisation and coastal shipping.
| Port | State | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata | West Bengal | The oldest major port and the only riverine one, with the Haldia dock complex |
| Paradip | Odisha | A natural harbour on the east coast |
| Visakhapatnam | Andhra Pradesh | The deepest landlocked port, with both an inner and an outer harbour |
| Kamarajar, Ennore | Tamil Nadu | The first major port set up as a company |
| Chennai | Tamil Nadu | An artificial harbour, the oldest on the east coast |
| V. O. Chidambaranar, Tuticorin | Tamil Nadu | An artificial deep sea harbour |
| Cochin | Kerala | A natural harbour on Willingdon Island |
| New Mangalore | Karnataka | Handles iron ore and petroleum products |
| Mormugao | Goa | Long associated with iron ore exports |
| Jawaharlal Nehru, Nhava Sheva | Maharashtra | The largest container handling port in India |
| Mumbai | Maharashtra | A natural harbour on the west coast |
| Deendayal, Kandla | Gujarat | A tidal port, the first developed after independence; renamed in 2017 |
Two private ports are worth knowing beside these. Mundra in Gujarat is the largest privately run port in the country, and Vizhinjam in Kerala has been developed as a deep water transhipment port, a role Indian cargo had long depended on foreign harbours to perform.
Metro rail and the metropolitan cities
Kolkata has the oldest metro in India: its first stretch, between Esplanade and Bhowanipore, opened on 24 October 1984, and the system is unusual in being run as a zone of Indian Railways rather than by a separate corporation. The Delhi Metro, built by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, opened its first section from Shahdara to Tis Hazari on 24 December 2002 and is the largest network in the country. Namma Metro in Bengaluru, opened in October 2011, was the first metro in southern India. Other systems followed in Gurugram, Mumbai, Jaipur, Chennai, Kochi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Noida, Pune and Kanpur. The Hyderabad Metro is the largest metro project in India built on a public private partnership. The Metro Rail Policy of 2017 laid down the conditions a city must meet before a central grant is sanctioned. Beyond the metros, the Regional Rapid Transit System branded as Namo Bharat began running on the Delhi to Meerut corridor, with its first section between Sahibabad and Duhai opened in October 2023.
The phrase metro city also has a census meaning. A city whose population crosses ten lakh is counted as a million plus city, and the four cities traditionally grouped as the metros of India are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, the four presidency and capital centres around which the colonial and modern transport networks were built.
Exam Point of View
Three clusters repeat here. First, airport names: a matching question pairing the airport with the city, where the safe anchors are Indira Gandhi for Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for Mumbai, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose for Kolkata, Kempegowda for Bengaluru and Rajiv Gandhi for Hyderabad, with Cochin and its solar power as the favourite single fact. Second, ports by description rather than by name: deepest landlocked is Visakhapatnam, only riverine and oldest is Kolkata, largest container port is Nhava Sheva, first developed after independence and tidal is Kandla, first corporatised is Kamarajar at Ennore. Examiners swap two of these descriptions in a statement based question. Third, metro firsts: Kolkata in 1984, Delhi in 2002, Bengaluru first in the south in 2011, and the Metro Rail Policy of 2017. Scheme names are a fourth trap, with Sagarmala for ports, Bharatmala for highways and Jal Marg Vikas for inland waterways offered together.

Practice MCQs on this topic
Which city has the oldest metro rail system in India?
- A.Delhi
- B.Kolkata
- C.Mumbai
- D.Chennai
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Kolkata
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Kolkata. The first stretch of the Kolkata Metro, between Esplanade and Bhowanipore, was opened on 24 October 1984, almost two decades before any other Indian city had a metro. The system is also unusual because it is operated as a zone of Indian Railways rather than by a separate metro corporation. Option A is wrong because the Delhi Metro, though it grew into the largest network in the country, opened its first section from Shahdara to Tis Hazari only on 24 December 2002. Option C is wrong because the Mumbai Metro began commercial service in 2014. Option D is wrong because the Chennai Metro is later still. The order to remember for the earliest systems is Kolkata in 1984, Delhi in 2002 and Bengaluru in 2011.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port, also known as Nhava Sheva, is located in which state?
- A.Gujarat
- B.Maharashtra
- C.Goa
- D.Karnataka
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Maharashtra
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Maharashtra. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port lies at Nhava Sheva across the harbour from Mumbai, in the Navi Mumbai area, and it handles the largest volume of container traffic of any port in India. It was developed to relieve the congestion at the older Mumbai Port. Option A is wrong because Gujarat holds the Deendayal Port at Kandla, a tidal port that was the first developed after independence, and the private Mundra Port, but not Nhava Sheva. Option C is wrong because Goa's major port is Mormugao, long associated with iron ore exports. Option D is wrong because Karnataka's major port is New Mangalore. A useful pairing to memorise is Nhava Sheva for containers, Kandla for tidal cargo and Mormugao for iron ore.
Which is the only riverine major port of India and also its oldest operating major port?
- A.Paradip Port
- B.Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata
- C.Visakhapatnam Port
- D.Chennai Port
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata
Explanation
The correct answer is B, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port at Kolkata. It sits far up the Hooghly river rather than on the open sea, which makes it the only riverine major port in the country, and it is the oldest of the major ports still working; the Haldia dock complex downstream was added to handle larger vessels that cannot reach Kolkata. Option A is wrong because Paradip in Odisha is a natural harbour on the open coast. Option C is wrong because Visakhapatnam, though famous as the deepest landlocked port with both an inner and an outer harbour, is a coastal port and not a river port. Option D is wrong because Chennai is an artificial harbour built out into the sea. The dredging of silt from the Hooghly is the recurring problem that makes Kolkata distinctive.
Cochin International Airport is remembered in general knowledge papers for which achievement?
- A.It was the first airport in the world to be fully powered by solar energy
- B.It is the busiest airport in India by passenger traffic
- C.It was the first airport built by the Airports Authority of India
- D.It has the longest runway in Asia
Show answer
Correct answer: A. It was the first airport in the world to be fully powered by solar energy
Explanation
The correct answer is A, it was the first airport in the world to be fully powered by solar energy. Cochin International Airport commissioned a solar plant large enough to meet its own consumption, and for that it received the Champion of the Earth award of the United Nations Environment Programme in 2018. It was also the first airport in India built under a public private partnership. Option B is wrong because the busiest airport in India by passenger traffic is Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Option C is wrong because the Airports Authority of India was formed only in 1995, by merging two earlier authorities, and Cochin was built outside that model as a company. Option D is wrong because no Indian airport holds the record for the longest runway in Asia. Fix the pair Kochi and solar power.
The Kempegowda International Airport serves which Indian city?
- A.Hyderabad
- B.Chennai
- C.Bengaluru
- D.Pune
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Bengaluru
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Bengaluru. The airport is named after Kempegowda, the sixteenth century chieftain regarded as the founder of the city. Option A is wrong because Hyderabad is served by the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, which replaced the older Begumpet airport. Option B is wrong because Chennai is served by the Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam. Option D is wrong because Pune has its own airport at Lohegaon and is not connected with the Kempegowda name. Airport naming is a steady source of matching questions, so group the big ones together: Indira Gandhi for Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for Mumbai, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose for Kolkata, Kempegowda for Bengaluru, Rajiv Gandhi for Hyderabad and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for Ahmedabad. Guwahati, the gateway to the North East, carries the name of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, and Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is named after Veer Savarkar.
UDAN, the regional connectivity scheme in civil aviation, stands for which phrase?
- A.Union Development of Air Navigation
- B.Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik
- C.Urban Development of Airport Networks
- D.Udaan Development and Aviation Network
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik. The scheme was announced under the National Civil Aviation Policy of 2016 so that unserved and underserved airstrips could be linked to the main network at capped fares, with the gap met through a viability gap funding mechanism. Its first flight connected Shimla with Delhi in April 2017. Option A is wrong because air navigation services are provided by the Airports Authority of India and have no scheme of this name. Option C is wrong because the scheme is aimed at small towns and regional airstrips rather than at urban airport networks. Option D is wrong because it simply rearranges the words into an expansion that was never used. Remember the scheme, the policy year 2016 and the first route Shimla to Delhi together.
Which major port of India is described as the deepest landlocked port, having both an inner and an outer harbour?
- A.Visakhapatnam
- B.Paradip
- C.Tuticorin
- D.New Mangalore
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Visakhapatnam
Explanation
The correct answer is A, Visakhapatnam. The port in Andhra Pradesh lies in a natural inlet sheltered by the Dolphin's Nose headland, which gives it great depth while keeping it protected, and it is the one Indian major port that works with a separate inner harbour and outer harbour. Option B is wrong because Paradip in Odisha is an open coast natural harbour without that two part layout. Option C is wrong because the V. O. Chidambaranar Port at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu is an artificial deep sea harbour created by building breakwaters, not a landlocked one. Option D is wrong because New Mangalore in Karnataka is an all weather port handling iron ore and petroleum but is not known for exceptional depth. Keep the descriptive labels apart: Visakhapatnam deepest, Kandla tidal, Kolkata riverine.
The Airports Authority of India was constituted in which year by merging two earlier authorities?
- A.1972
- B.1986
- C.1995
- D.2004
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 1995
Explanation
The correct answer is C, 1995. The Airports Authority of India came into being in that year through the merger of the International Airports Authority of India, which ran the international gateways, with the National Airports Authority, which ran the domestic airfields and the air navigation services. The merged statutory body manages most civil airports in the country and provides air traffic services over Indian airspace. Option A is wrong because 1972 is the year the International Airports Authority alone was set up. Option B is wrong because 1986 is when the National Airports Authority was constituted, the second of the two bodies that later merged. Option D is wrong because 2004 has no bearing on the Authority's formation. The chain to remember is 1972, then 1986, then the merger in 1995.
Which central scheme, launched in 2015, is aimed at port led development and coastal shipping in India?
- A.Bharatmala
- B.Sagarmala
- C.Setu Bharatam
- D.Jal Marg Vikas
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sagarmala
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Sagarmala. The programme covers port modernisation and new port development, port connectivity, port linked industrialisation and coastal community development, and it is run by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Option A is wrong because Bharatmala is the umbrella highway development programme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, covering economic corridors and border roads. Option C is wrong because Setu Bharatam is the scheme to replace level crossings on national highways with bridges and to repair old bridges. Option D is wrong because Jal Marg Vikas is the specific project to develop the National Waterway 1 on the Ganga between Varanasi and Haldia, which is narrower in scope than Sagarmala. Pair each name with its ministry to avoid the mix up.
Which port in Gujarat was the first to be developed after independence and was renamed Deendayal Port in 2017?
- A.Mundra
- B.Kandla
- C.Porbandar
- D.Okha
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Kandla
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Kandla. After partition left the port of Karachi outside India, Kandla in the Gulf of Kutch was developed as the main gateway for the northern and western hinterland, which makes it the first major port developed after independence. It is a tidal port, meaning ships work with the rise and fall of the tide in the gulf, and it was renamed the Deendayal Port in 2017. Option A is wrong because Mundra, also in Gujarat, is the largest privately operated port in India and is not a major port in the statutory sense. Option C is wrong because Porbandar is a smaller state port better known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Option D is wrong because Okha is a minor port on the Gujarat coast. Note the three Gujarat names separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which was the first city in India to get a metro rail?
Kolkata. Its first stretch between Esplanade and Bhowanipore opened on 24 October 1984, nearly two decades before Delhi. The Kolkata Metro is also unique in being operated as a zone of Indian Railways instead of by a separate metro corporation.
Which is the largest container handling port of India?
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva in Maharashtra, across the harbour from Mumbai. It was developed to relieve congestion at the older Mumbai Port and now handles the largest container volumes in the country.
Why is Visakhapatnam Port special?
It is described as the deepest landlocked port of India. It lies in a natural inlet sheltered by the Dolphin’s Nose headland and is the only Indian major port that works with a separate inner harbour and outer harbour.
What does UDAN stand for and when did it start?
UDAN stands for Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik. It was announced under the National Civil Aviation Policy of 2016 to connect unserved and underserved airstrips at capped fares, and its first flight linked Shimla with Delhi in April 2017.
Which port was renamed Deendayal Port?
Kandla, in the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, was renamed Deendayal Port in 2017. It is a tidal port and was the first major port developed after independence, taking over the role Karachi had played before partition.
