Birthplaces of Famous Personalities for Exams — GK24 title card

Objective papers love a question that can be answered in one word, and the birthplace of a famous Indian is exactly that kind of question. SSC, Railway and State exams set it in three ways: the place asked for a named person, the person asked for a named place, and a match-the-following list of four leaders against four towns. The facts never change, so a student who learns the standard list once keeps the marks for life. This note arranges the birthplaces that actually appear in papers by field, adds the birth years that often travel with them, and points out the pairs that examiners deliberately confuse.

Why birthplaces are set so often

Three reasons. First, a birthplace ties a national figure to a state, which lets one question test both static GK and the map. Second, several birthplaces are now outside India, in Pakistan or Bangladesh, which makes a ready-made trap. Third, the birth anniversaries of many of these people are observed as national days, so one memorised date serves two chapters. Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, National Youth Day on 12 January for Swami Vivekananda, Teachers Day on 5 September for Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Children's Day on 14 November for Jawaharlal Nehru all come from this list.

Freedom fighters and national leaders

PersonBirthplacePresent state or country
Mahatma Gandhi (1869)PorbandarGujarat
Jawaharlal Nehru (1889)Allahabad, now PrayagrajUttar Pradesh
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875)NadiadGujarat
Dr B. R. Ambedkar (1891)MhowMadhya Pradesh
Subhas Chandra Bose (1897)CuttackOdisha
Dr Rajendra Prasad (1884)Ziradei, Siwan districtBihar
Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904)MughalsaraiUttar Pradesh
Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856)RatnagiriMaharashtra
Lala Lajpat Rai (1865)Dhudike, Moga districtPunjab
Bhagat Singh (1907)Banga, Lyallpur districtNow in Pakistan
Chandrashekhar Azad (1906)Bhavra, Alirajpur districtMadhya Pradesh
Mangal Pandey (1827)Nagwa, Ballia districtUttar Pradesh
Sarojini Naidu (1879)HyderabadTelangana
Birsa Munda (1875)Ulihatu, Khunti districtJharkhand

Two entries in this table carry the usual traps. Nehru and Indira Gandhi were both born at Allahabad, in the family house Anand Bhavan, so a question that names the city can be set for either. Bhagat Singh's village of Banga lay in the Lyallpur district of undivided Punjab, now Faisalabad in Pakistan, which is why Punjab alone is an incomplete answer.

Reformers, saints and thinkers

  • Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born in 1772 at Radhanagar in the Hooghly district of Bengal.
  • Swami Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj, was born in 1824 at Tankara in Gujarat.
  • Swami Vivekananda was born in 1863 at Calcutta, and his teacher Ramakrishna Paramahamsa at Kamarpukur in Bengal.
  • Jyotirao Phule was born in 1827 at Satara in Maharashtra and Savitribai Phule in 1831 at Naigaon in the same district.
  • Guru Nanak was born in 1469 at Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, while Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666 at Patna in Bihar.
  • Sri Aurobindo was born at Calcutta in 1872 and Vinoba Bhave at Gagode in Maharashtra in 1895.

Scientists, scholars and performers

Science questions pair the person with a southern town more often than students expect. C. V. Raman, the first Indian Nobel laureate in science, was born in 1888 at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. The mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in 1887 at Erode and grew up at Kumbakonam, both in Tamil Nadu. Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 at Rameswaram, and his birthday is observed as World Students Day. Vikram Sarabhai was born at Ahmedabad in 1919 and Homi Jehangir Bhabha at Bombay in 1909, so the father of the Indian space programme and the father of the Indian nuclear programme belong to different cities. Jagadish Chandra Bose was born in 1858 in the Bikrampur area of what is now Bangladesh. Among others asked by name, Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 at Jorasanko in Calcutta, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in 1888 at Thiruttani in Tamil Nadu, Rani Lakshmibai in 1828 at Varanasi, Chhatrapati Shivaji in 1630 at Shivneri fort near Pune, Maharana Pratap in 1540 at Kumbhalgarh in Rajasthan, and Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin in space, at Karnal in Haryana.

Birthplaces now outside India

Four names make this the most profitable group in the chapter: Guru Nanak at Nankana Sahib and Bhagat Singh at Banga, both in present-day Pakistan; Jagadish Chandra Bose at Bikrampur and Bipin Chandra Pal at Sylhet, both in present-day Bangladesh. Mother Teresa belongs to the same group for a different reason: she was born in 1910 at Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, and became an Indian citizen in 1951, which is why a question on her birthplace cannot be answered with Kolkata.

How to revise this chapter

Learn the table state by state, not person by person. Uttar Pradesh takes Nehru, Shastri, Mangal Pandey and Rani Lakshmibai; Gujarat takes Gandhi, Patel and Dayananda Saraswati; Maharashtra takes Tilak, Gokhale, Phule and Vinoba Bhave; Tamil Nadu takes Raman, Ramanujan, Kalam and Radhakrishnan; Bengal takes Tagore, Vivekananda, Ram Mohan Roy and Subhas Chandra Bose. Then revise the four places that have been renamed, Allahabad to Prayagraj, Mughalsarai to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar, Calcutta to Kolkata and Bombay to Mumbai, because papers print either form.

Exam Point of View

Papers set this chapter as a one-line factual question or as a match-the-following of four names against four towns. Learn Gandhi with Porbandar, Patel with Nadiad, Ambedkar with Mhow, Bose with Cuttack, Rajendra Prasad with Ziradei, Shastri with Mughalsarai, Tilak with Ratnagiri, Lajpat Rai with Dhudike and Birsa Munda with Ulihatu. The traps are fixed: Ambedkar placed in Maharashtra because of his family's district, Rajkot given for Gandhi because he studied there, Chittorgarh given for Maharana Pratap who was actually born at Kumbhalgarh, Anandpur Sahib given for Guru Gobind Singh who was born at Patna, and Kolkata given for Mother Teresa who was born at Skopje. Also keep the four birthplaces now outside India ready, and remember the renamed towns, since a paper may print Allahabad or Prayagraj and Mughalsarai or Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was Dr B. R. Ambedkar born?

He was born on 14 April 1891 at Mhow, a cantonment town near Indore in present-day Madhya Pradesh, now officially called Dr Ambedkar Nagar. His family belonged to the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, which is why Maharashtra is the usual wrong answer.
