Abbreviations and Full Forms: Exam List for GK Papers — GK24 title card
Abbreviations and Full Forms: Exam List for GK Papers — GK24 title card

Abbreviations are the cheapest marks in a General Awareness paper. One or two questions in almost every SSC, Railway and banking paper simply ask what a set of letters stands for, and a wrong expansion of a familiar abbreviation costs the same mark as a hard history question. The list below groups the expansions examiners actually use, and separates the ones candidates most often get wrong.

How the question is set

Three forms recur. The first gives the abbreviation and asks for the expansion. The second gives an expansion and asks which abbreviation it belongs to. The third is a near-miss question, where three options differ from the right answer by a single word, as in Indian Financial System Code against Indian Finance System Code. Reading the whole option, not the first two words, is what saves the mark.

Indian organisations and constitutional bodies

  • NITI Aayog - National Institution for Transforming India
  • RBI - Reserve Bank of India; SEBI - Securities and Exchange Board of India; IRDAI - Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India
  • NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development; SIDBI - Small Industries Development Bank of India
  • CAG - Comptroller and Auditor General; CVC - Central Vigilance Commission; NHRC - National Human Rights Commission
  • ISRO - Indian Space Research Organisation; DRDO - Defence Research and Development Organisation; BARC - Bhabha Atomic Research Centre
  • CSIR - Council of Scientific and Industrial Research; ICAR - Indian Council of Agricultural Research; ICMR - Indian Council of Medical Research
  • NCERT - National Council of Educational Research and Training; UGC - University Grants Commission; AICTE - All India Council for Technical Education
  • UIDAI - Unique Identification Authority of India; FSSAI - Food Safety and Standards Authority of India; TRAI - Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
  • EPFO - Employees' Provident Fund Organisation; PFRDA - Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority; NPCI - National Payments Corporation of India

Banking, payments and economy

Payment abbreviations are asked more than any other group, because every candidate uses them. NEFT is National Electronic Funds Transfer, RTGS is Real Time Gross Settlement, IMPS is Immediate Payment Service and UPI is Unified Payments Interface. IFSC is the Indian Financial System Code and MICR is Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. PAN is Permanent Account Number, TAN is Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, and TDS is Tax Deducted at Source. In monetary policy, CRR is the Cash Reserve Ratio, SLR the Statutory Liquidity Ratio, MSF the Marginal Standing Facility and MCLR the Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate. NPA is a Non-Performing Asset, NBFC a Non-Banking Financial Company, KYC Know Your Customer, CVV Card Verification Value and DICGC the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation. GST is Goods and Services Tax and GDP Gross Domestic Product.

Science, technology and computers

Four acronyms from physics recur: LASER, Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation; MASER, Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation; RADAR, Radio Detection and Ranging; and SONAR, Sound Navigation and Ranging. SCUBA is Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. In medicine, DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid, ATP adenosine triphosphate, MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging, ECG electrocardiogram, ORS Oral Rehydration Solution, BCG Bacillus Calmette-Guerin and AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome caused by HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In computing, HTTP is HyperText Transfer Protocol, HTML HyperText Markup Language, URL Uniform Resource Locator, FTP File Transfer Protocol, SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, DNS Domain Name System, USB Universal Serial Bus, PDF Portable Document Format, JPEG Joint Photographic Experts Group, GUI Graphical User Interface and ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Wi-Fi is a trademark often expanded as Wireless Fidelity.

Schemes, space and defence

MGNREGA is the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, PMJDY the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, PMFBY the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, PMAY the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and APY the Atal Pension Yojana. AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. In space, PSLV is the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, SSLV the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, INSAT the Indian National Satellite System and NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation, the operational name of the IRNSS, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. Among forces, BSF is the Border Security Force, CRPF the Central Reserve Police Force, CISF the Central Industrial Security Force, ITBP the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, NSG the National Security Guard and NCC the National Cadet Corps. The missile name BrahMos is not an acronym of words but a joining of two river names, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva.

The ones most often answered wrongly

  • AM and PM - ante meridiem and post meridiem, not "after morning"
  • PIN - Postal Index Number for an address, Personal Identification Number for a card
  • ATM - Automated Teller Machine, not Automatic Teller Money
  • UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund today, though it began as the International Children's Emergency Fund
  • NITI - National Institution for Transforming India, not "New India Transformation Institute"
  • Google, news and parking - ordinary words, not acronyms, although exam options pretend otherwise

Exam Point of View

Almost every General Awareness paper carries one or two abbreviation questions, and they are pure recall. Expect the abbreviation to expansion form, the reverse form, and the near-miss form in which the wrong options change a single word, such as Generation for Guarantee in MGNREGA or Absorption for Amplification in LASER. Regulators, payment systems, UN agencies and physics acronyms are the richest areas. Two traps repeat: the original and the present name of UNICEF, and the two expansions of PIN, postal for an address and personal for a card. Where a name is not an acronym at all, as with BrahMos or the word news, the question usually offers an invented expansion as the trap.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Static GKEasy

What does NITI in NITI Aayog stand for?

  1. A.National Institution for Transforming India
  2. B.New India Transformation Initiative
  3. C.National Integrated Technology Institute
  4. D.National Industrial Training Institute
Show answer

Correct answer: A. National Institution for Transforming India

Explanation

The correct answer is A, National Institution for Transforming India. NITI Aayog replaced the Planning Commission on 1 January 2015 and works as the policy think tank of the Government of India. The Prime Minister is its chairperson, and it has a vice-chairperson, a chief executive officer and the chief ministers of the states in its Governing Council. Option B is wrong because no official expansion uses the word Initiative, though it sounds plausible. Option C is wrong because the abbreviation has nothing to do with technology; NITI is a policy body, not a technical institute. Option D is wrong because industrial training institutes are the ITIs, a quite separate network of vocational schools run under the Directorate General of Training. Read every word of the expansion before marking, since the distractors differ by one word.

Q2.Static GKEasy

LASER is an acronym for which of the following?

  1. A.Light Absorption by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
  2. B.Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
  3. C.Linear Amplification of Standard Emitted Rays
  4. D.Light Analysis by Sequential Emission of Radiation
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser produces a narrow, coherent, single-wavelength beam by stimulated emission, in which an excited atom is made to release a photon identical to the one that strikes it. Option A is the usual trap, replacing Amplification with Absorption: absorption is the opposite process, in which energy is taken in rather than released as a beam. Option C is wrong because the word Linear belongs to no standard expansion, and lasers are not described as linear amplifiers of standard rays. Option D is wrong because a laser neither analyses light nor emits sequentially. The companion acronym is MASER, Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, which came first and was developed by Charles Townes.

Q3.Static GKMedium

In banking, IFSC stands for:

  1. A.Indian Finance Settlement Code
  2. B.International Financial System Code
  3. C.Indian Financial System Code
  4. D.Indian Fund Settlement Centre
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Indian Financial System Code

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Indian Financial System Code. The IFSC is an eleven-character alphanumeric code that identifies a particular bank branch in the electronic payment systems operated by the Reserve Bank of India, and it is required for NEFT and RTGS transfers. The first four characters are the bank, the fifth is zero, and the last six identify the branch. Option A is wrong because the word Settlement belongs to RTGS, Real Time Gross Settlement, not to the IFSC. Option B is wrong because the code is national, not international; it covers branches in India alone. Option D is wrong because there is no body called a fund settlement centre in the payment system. The companion abbreviation on a cheque leaf is MICR, Magnetic Ink Character Recognition.

Q4.Static GKMedium

What does UNICEF stand for today?

  1. A.United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund
  2. B.United Nations Children's Fund
  3. C.United Nations Child Education Foundation
  4. D.Universal Nations Child Emergency Forum
Show answer

Correct answer: B. United Nations Children's Fund

Explanation

The correct answer is B, United Nations Children's Fund. The agency was created by the General Assembly in 1946 as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, for children in countries ruined by the Second World War, and in 1953 it was made a permanent part of the United Nations and renamed the United Nations Children's Fund, keeping the familiar acronym. Its headquarters is in New York, and it received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965. Option A is the original name, which is why it is the hardest distractor; examiners who want it say "originally". Option C is wrong because education is the work of UNESCO, which is a separate agency based in Paris. Option D is wrong because no United Nations body is called a universal nations forum.

Q5.Static GKEasy

RADAR, used to detect aircraft and measure rainfall, stands for:

  1. A.Radio Detection and Ranging
  2. B.Radial Direction and Range
  3. C.Radio Direction and Reflection
  4. D.Rapid Detection and Reporting
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Radio Detection and Ranging

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Radio Detection and Ranging. Radar sends out radio waves and measures the echo that returns from an object, so the time taken gives the distance, or range, and the shift in frequency gives the speed by the Doppler effect. The underwater equivalent is SONAR, Sound Navigation and Ranging, which uses sound waves because radio waves are absorbed quickly in water. Option B is wrong because no standard expansion uses Radial Direction. Option C is tempting since radar does depend on reflection, but the final word of the acronym is Ranging, which is the measurement of distance. Option D is wrong because Rapid and Reporting belong to no expansion of the term. Doppler weather radars are used by the India Meteorological Department to track rain and cyclones.

Q6.Static GKMedium

MGNREGA is the abbreviation of:

  1. A.Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Act
  2. B.Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
  3. C.Mahatma Gandhi National Rozgar Expansion Guarantee Act
  4. D.Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Rural Employment Guarantee Agency
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The Act was passed in 2005 as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and renamed after Mahatma Gandhi in 2009. It guarantees at least a hundred days of unskilled manual work in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for it, with a legal right to an unemployment allowance if work is not provided in time. Option A is the standard trap, putting Generation in place of Guarantee: the guarantee is the whole point of the law, since it makes employment an enforceable right. Option C is wrong because the official name uses Employment and not Rozgar. Option D is wrong because the scheme is rural and is an Act, not an agency, and no word Nagar appears in it.

Q7.Static GKHard

NavIC, the operational name of the IRNSS, stands for:

  1. A.National Vehicle Information Centre
  2. B.Navigation with Indian Constellation
  3. C.Navigational Indian Coordinates
  4. D.Navigation and Internet Connectivity
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Navigation with Indian Constellation

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Navigation with Indian Constellation. NavIC is the name given to the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, or IRNSS, built by ISRO to give position fixes over India and a region around it, independent of the American GPS. The word also means sailor or navigator in Indian languages, which is why it was chosen. Option A is wrong because no vehicle information centre carries this name; vehicle records are kept in the VAHAN database. Option C is wrong because the expansion is not about coordinates, and the second letter stands for the preposition with. Option D is wrong because NavIC provides position and timing signals, not internet access. The system's satellites sit in geostationary and inclined geosynchronous orbits rather than the medium earth orbits used by GPS.

Q8.Static GKEasy

SONAR, used to measure the depth of the sea, stands for:

  1. A.Sound Navigation and Ranging
  2. B.Sonic Navigation and Reflection
  3. C.Sound Analysis and Recording
  4. D.Submarine Observation and Ranging
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Sound Navigation and Ranging

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Sound Navigation and Ranging. Sonar sends a pulse of sound into the water and times the echo returning from the sea bed, a shoal of fish or a submarine; since the speed of sound in sea water is roughly 1,500 metres a second, the time gives the distance. This method of measuring depth is called echo sounding. Option B is wrong because the standard expansion uses Sound rather than Sonic and Ranging rather than Reflection. Option C is wrong because sonar is used for navigation and distance finding, not for recording sound. Option D is wrong because sonar is used by surface ships and submarines alike, so the word Submarine is not part of the acronym. Remember the pair: radar for air with radio waves, sonar for water with sound.

Q9.Static GKMedium

OPEC is the abbreviation for:

  1. A.Organization of Petroleum Enriched Countries
  2. B.Oil Producing and Exporting Commission
  3. C.Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries
  4. D.Oil Price and Economic Council
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. OPEC was founded at the Baghdad Conference of 1960 by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and its secretariat has been at Vienna in Austria since 1965. It coordinates the petroleum policies of its member states and its production decisions move world crude prices, which is why Indian papers ask about it. Option A is wrong because the word is Exporting, not Enriched; enrichment belongs to uranium, not oil. Option B is wrong because OPEC is an organization of states and not a commission, and the word Producing does not appear in its name. Option D is wrong because no body of that name exists. A related term is OPEC Plus, the wider group that includes Russia and other non-member producers.

Q10.Static GKEasy

In the address of a website, HTTP stands for:

  1. A.HyperText Transfer Protocol
  2. B.HyperText Transmission Program
  3. C.High Transfer Text Protocol
  4. D.Hyperlink Text Transfer Process
Show answer

Correct answer: A. HyperText Transfer Protocol

Explanation

The correct answer is A, HyperText Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the set of rules by which a browser asks a web server for a page and the server sends it back; HTTPS is the same protocol carried over an encrypted connection, which is why banking sites use it. Option B is wrong because the last word is Protocol, a set of rules, and not a Program. Option C is wrong because the first word is HyperText, the linked text of the web, and not High Transfer. Option D is wrong because the acronym ends in Protocol rather than Process. Keep the related expansions together: HTML is HyperText Markup Language, URL is Uniform Resource Locator, FTP is File Transfer Protocol and SMTP, used for outgoing mail, is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

Q11.Static GKMedium

The S in the Ministry of AYUSH stands for which system of medicine?

  1. A.Surgery
  2. B.Siddha
  3. C.Sowa-Rigpa
  4. D.Spa therapy
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Siddha

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Siddha. AYUSH expands as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, so the letters stand for five traditional systems in which the S is Siddha, the Tamil system of medicine associated with the Siddhars of south India. Option A is wrong because surgery is a branch of modern allopathic practice and is not one of the AYUSH systems, though Sushruta is remembered in Ayurveda for surgical technique. Option C is a real system, Sowa-Rigpa of the Himalayan region, which the ministry also looks after and which is sometimes written into the longer form, but it is not what the S of the acronym itself stands for. Option D is wrong because spa therapy is not a recognised system of medicine in India at all.

Q12.Static GKHard

The name of the BrahMos missile is formed from:

  1. A.An acronym of Brahmastra and Mosaic
  2. B.The names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva
  3. C.The names of its two designers
  4. D.An acronym of Brahma Modular System
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva. BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile built by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, and its name joins the Brahmaputra of India with the Moskva of Russia, the river that runs through Moscow. It can be fired from land, ships, submarines and aircraft. Option A is wrong because Brahmastra and Mosaic form no part of the name, although Brahmastra appears in mythology. Option C is wrong because the name honours the two countries and not individuals. Option D is wrong because there is no Brahma Modular System; the missile is named for geography, which is the point the question tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of NITI Aayog?

NITI stands for the National Institution for Transforming India. It is the policy think tank of the Government of India, set up on 1 January 2015 in place of the Planning Commission. The Prime Minister chairs it, and the chief ministers of all states sit in its Governing Council.

Is Wi-Fi an abbreviation of Wireless Fidelity?

Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance and was coined as a catchy brand name on the model of hi-fi. It is widely expanded as Wireless Fidelity, and exam keys usually accept that, but strictly the name is not an acronym built from those words.

What is the difference between the two full forms of PIN?

In postal addresses PIN means Postal Index Number, the six-digit code introduced in India in 1972 to sort mail. On a bank card or a phone, PIN means Personal Identification Number, the secret number used to authorise a transaction. The question usually states the context, so read it first.

What do PSLV, GSLV and SSLV stand for?

PSLV is the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, used mainly for remote sensing satellites in polar orbits. GSLV is the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, used for heavier communication satellites. SSLV is the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, ISRO's smallest launcher, built for small payloads on demand.

Which abbreviations are most often asked in SSC and Railway papers?
