Highest, Longest and Largest in India: Static GK List
Static GK notes on the superlatives of India: the highest peaks, longest rivers, largest states, lakes, deserts, national parks, dams and monuments for exams.
By GK24 Editorial Team· Published · 5 min read

Every general awareness paper carries a handful of one-line superlatives: the highest peak, the longest river, the largest state, the biggest lake. They are free marks for a student who has memorised the list and a guaranteed loss for one who has not, because there is nothing to reason out. These notes gather the superlatives of India that stay put, arrange them by theme so that the neighbouring facts reinforce one another, and mark clearly the handful of records that keep changing and should be checked before they are quoted.
The land: peaks, plateaus and deserts
Kangchenjunga in Sikkim, 8,586 metres, is the highest mountain peak in India and the third highest in the world. Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand is the highest peak lying wholly within Indian-administered territory outside the Himalayan border ranges of the north-east, and Anamudi in Kerala, 2,695 metres, is the highest peak of peninsular India and of the Western Ghats. In the Eastern Ghats the highest point is Arma Konda in Andhra Pradesh. The Thar, also called the Great Indian Desert, spread over Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana, is the largest desert in the country. The Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram is the highest battlefield in the world, and Indira Point on Great Nicobar is the southernmost point of India.
| Superlative | Answer | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Highest peak | Kangchenjunga, 8,586 m | Sikkim |
| Highest peak of peninsular India | Anamudi, 2,695 m | Kerala, Western Ghats |
| Largest desert | Thar or Great Indian Desert | Rajasthan and adjoining states |
| Largest delta | Sundarbans delta, the largest in the world | West Bengal, shared with Bangladesh |
| Largest mangrove forest | Sundarbans | West Bengal |
| Highest rainfall | Mawsynram, with Sohra or Cherrapunji close behind | Meghalaya |
Rivers, lakes and islands
The Ganga, about 2,525 kilometres long, is the longest river of India and the country's largest river basin drains into it. The Godavari, about 1,465 kilometres, is the longest river of peninsular India and is called the Dakshin Ganga; the Yamuna is the longest tributary of the Ganga, and the Narmada and the Tapi are the large west-flowing rivers that run through rift valleys and form estuaries rather than deltas. Wular Lake in Jammu and Kashmir is the largest freshwater lake in India, Chilika in Odisha the largest brackish water lagoon, Sambhar in Rajasthan the largest inland salt lake and Vembanad in Kerala the longest lake. The Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar, the reservoir of the Rihand dam in Uttar Pradesh, is the largest artificial lake. Majuli on the Brahmaputra in Assam is the largest river island in India, and Kunchikal Falls in Karnataka is usually given as the highest waterfall, with Jog Falls on the Sharavathi the best known plunge fall.
States and administrative records
Rajasthan is the largest state by area and Goa the smallest; Ladakh is the largest union territory by area and Lakshadweep the smallest. By the figures of the 2011 Census, Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state and Sikkim the least populous, Bihar has the highest population density among the states and Arunachal Pradesh the lowest, and Kerala has the highest literacy rate. Kachchh in Gujarat is the largest district by area. Gujarat has the longest coastline of any Indian state. Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest area of any state in successive India State of Forest Reports, while Mizoram has the largest forest cover as a share of its own geographical area. Hemis in Ladakh is the largest national park in India.
| Superlative | Answer |
|---|---|
| Largest and smallest state by area | Rajasthan; Goa |
| Largest and smallest union territory by area | Ladakh; Lakshadweep |
| Most and least populous state (Census 2011) | Uttar Pradesh; Sikkim |
| Highest and lowest population density (Census 2011) | Bihar; Arunachal Pradesh |

| Largest national park | Hemis, Ladakh |
Monuments and built structures
The Qutub Minar in Delhi, about 72.5 metres, is the tallest brick minaret in the world and the tallest stone tower in India. The Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri, built by Akbar to mark his Gujarat victory and standing about 54 metres above the ground, is the highest gateway in India. The Jama Masjid of Delhi, built under Shah Jahan, is the largest mosque in the country, and the Gol Gumbaz at Vijayapura in Karnataka, the tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah, carries one of the largest domes in the world. The Kailasa temple at Ellora, carved downward out of a single rock, is the largest monolithic rock-cut temple, and the Ellora caves form the largest cave temple complex. The Se Cathedral at Old Goa is the largest church in Asia and the Tawang monastery in Arunachal Pradesh the largest Buddhist monastery in India. The Statue of Unity at Kevadia in Gujarat, showing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and standing 182 metres, is the tallest statue in India. Among engineering works, the Tehri dam on the Bhagirathi in Uttarakhand, about 260 metres, is the highest dam in India, while the Hirakud dam on the Mahanadi in Odisha, running about 26 kilometres with its earthen dykes, is the longest. NH 44, which runs from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, is the longest national highway, about 3,745 kilometres. The Indian Museum in Kolkata, founded in 1814, is the oldest and largest museum in India, the Birla Planetarium in Kolkata the largest planetarium in Asia, and the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur near Chennai the largest zoo.
The records that keep changing
A few superlatives in this chapter are not permanent, and a note that repeats an old figure will cost marks. The tallest building, the longest bridge, the longest road and rail tunnel, the longest railway platform, the highest motorable road, the largest solar park and the busiest airport are all overtaken every few years as new projects open. Learn the physical geography and the historic monuments as fixed answers, and treat the engineering records as things to refresh from a current government source before the exam. Where a paper asks such a record, it usually quotes the project by name, so knowing the project and its state matters more than the exact figure.
Exam Point of View
This chapter is asked as straight one-liners, so the marks go to recall, not reasoning. Four traps recur. First, the pair of peaks: Kangchenjunga for India as a whole, Anamudi for the peninsula, and Arma Konda for the Eastern Ghats. Second, the lakes, where Wular is freshwater, Chilika is a brackish lagoon, Sambhar is an inland salt lake and Vembanad is the longest. Third, the dams, where Tehri is the highest and Hirakud the longest; candidates who remember only one name lose the other. Fourth, the census superlatives, which must be quoted as the 2011 figures, so Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state, Sikkim the least and Bihar the densest. Engineering records such as the tallest building, longest bridge and longest platform change every few years and should be checked afresh before quoting.

Practice MCQs on this topic
Which is the highest mountain peak located in India?
- A.Nanda Devi
- B.Kangchenjunga
- C.Anamudi
- D.Doda Betta
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Kangchenjunga
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Kangchenjunga. Kangchenjunga rises to 8,586 metres on the border of Sikkim with Nepal and is the third highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest and K2. It is the highest peak in India and its summit region is treated as sacred in Sikkim, so climbers traditionally stop short of the final point.
Option A, Nanda Devi, in Uttarakhand, is a very high Himalayan peak and the second highest in the country, but it is lower than Kangchenjunga. Option C, Anamudi, at 2,695 metres in Kerala, is the highest peak of peninsular India and of the Western Ghats, not of the country. Option D, Doda Betta, is the highest peak of the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu and is lower still. The question is set to see whether a candidate can keep the national, the peninsular and the regional superlatives apart.
Anamudi, the highest peak of peninsular India, is located in which state?
- A.Karnataka
- B.Tamil Nadu
- C.Kerala
- D.Maharashtra
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Kerala
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Kerala. Anamudi stands 2,695 metres high in the Idukki district of Kerala, in the Anaimalai hills of the Western Ghats, close to Eravikulam National Park, which protects the Nilgiri tahr. It is the highest point of peninsular India and the highest point of the Western Ghats.
Option A, Karnataka, has Mullayanagiri in the Chikkamagaluru district as its highest point, which is far lower. Option B, Tamil Nadu, has Doda Betta in the Nilgiris as its highest peak, and the state shares the Anaimalai range with Kerala but not the summit itself. Option D, Maharashtra, has Kalsubai in the Sahyadri as its highest point. Since all four states lie along or near the Western Ghats, the examiner expects the candidate to know not only the name of the peak but the state that holds the summit.
Which is the largest state of India by area?
- A.Madhya Pradesh
- B.Maharashtra
- C.Uttar Pradesh
- D.Rajasthan
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Rajasthan
Explanation
The correct answer is D, Rajasthan. Rajasthan is the largest state of India by area, holding the Thar desert in its west and the Aravalli range running across it from the south-west to the north-east. The smallest state by area is Goa, while among the union territories Ladakh is the largest and Lakshadweep the smallest.
Option A, Madhya Pradesh, is the second largest state by area and became so after Chhattisgarh was carved out of it. Option B, Maharashtra, is third by area and the second most populous state. Option C, Uttar Pradesh, is the most populous state according to the 2011 Census but stands well below these in area. The trap in this question is the word area: a candidate who reads it as population will pick Uttar Pradesh, which is why the two superlatives should always be learnt as a pair.
Which is the largest freshwater lake in India?
- A.Chilika Lake
- B.Wular Lake
- C.Sambhar Lake
- D.Vembanad Lake
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Wular Lake
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Wular Lake. Wular Lake lies in the Kashmir valley in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is fed by the Jhelum and is the largest freshwater lake in India. It is a Ramsar site and acts as a natural flood absorber for the valley.
Option A, Chilika Lake in Odisha, is the largest brackish water lagoon in India, connected to the Bay of Bengal by a narrow mouth, and is known for migratory birds and Irrawaddy dolphins; it is not freshwater. Option C, Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan, is the largest inland salt lake in the country and a major source of common salt. Option D, Vembanad in Kerala, is the longest lake in India and the heart of the backwater system, but it is a brackish lagoon as well. The question turns on the word freshwater, which rules out three of the four.
Majuli, the largest river island in India, lies on which river?
- A.Ganga
- B.Brahmaputra
- C.Godavari
- D.Mahanadi
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Brahmaputra
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Brahmaputra. Majuli lies in the Brahmaputra in Assam and is the largest river island in India. It is inhabited, it has been made a district of Assam, and it is famous for the satras, the Vaishnava monasteries founded in the tradition of Srimanta Sankardeva. Its area has been shrinking steadily because of erosion by the river.
Option A, the Ganga, is the longest river of India and forms the Sundarbans delta with the Brahmaputra and the Meghna, but Majuli is not on it. Option C, the Godavari, is the longest river of peninsular India and is called the Dakshin Ganga; it forms a large delta on the eastern coast. Option D, the Mahanadi, flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha and is dammed at Hirakud, the longest dam in India. All four are major rivers, so the question checks a single precise pairing rather than a general idea.
The Tehri dam, the highest dam in India, is built on which river?
- A.Alaknanda
- B.Bhagirathi
- C.Yamuna
- D.Sutlej
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Bhagirathi
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Bhagirathi. The Tehri dam stands on the Bhagirathi in the Tehri Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and rises to about 260 metres, which makes it the highest dam in India. It is a rock and earth fill dam and supplies power, irrigation and drinking water. Its reservoir submerged the old town of Tehri, which had to be rebuilt as New Tehri.
Option A, the Alaknanda, is the other headstream of the Ganga and joins the Bhagirathi at Devprayag, but the Tehri dam is not on it. Option C, the Yamuna, carries the Lakhwar and Hathnikund works, not Tehri. Option D, the Sutlej, is the river of the Bhakra dam in Himachal Pradesh, which is the second highest dam in India and was called a temple of modern India by Jawaharlal Nehru. Remember the pair for the paper: Tehri is the highest dam and Hirakud on the Mahanadi is the longest.
The Sundarbans, the largest delta in the world, is formed by which river system?
- A.Godavari and Krishna
- B.Narmada and Tapi
- C.Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna
- D.Mahanadi and Subarnarekha
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. These three rivers meet near the head of the Bay of Bengal and drop an enormous load of silt, building the Sundarbans, the largest delta in the world, shared between India and Bangladesh. It also holds the largest mangrove forest on earth, is a national park and tiger reserve on the Indian side, and is a World Heritage Site.
Option A, the Godavari and the Krishna, build large deltas of their own on the eastern coast of peninsular India, but neither is the largest. Option B, the Narmada and the Tapi, flow west through rift valleys and form estuaries rather than deltas, a point examiners like to test on its own. Option D, the Mahanadi and the Subarnarekha, reach the Bay of Bengal in Odisha, and the Mahanadi builds a fair delta, but nothing of the scale of the Sundarbans.
Which is the largest national park in India by area?
- A.Jim Corbett National Park
- B.Hemis National Park
- C.Kaziranga National Park
- D.Gir National Park
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Hemis National Park
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Hemis National Park. Hemis lies in eastern Ladakh, in high cold desert country, and is the largest national park in India by area. It is best known as a stronghold of the snow leopard, and it also holds the Tibetan wolf, the bharal or blue sheep and the Asiatic ibex.
Option A, Jim Corbett in Uttarakhand, is the oldest national park in India and the place where Project Tiger was launched, but it is far smaller. Option C, Kaziranga in Assam, is a World Heritage Site famous for the one-horned rhinoceros and for its grasslands along the Brahmaputra. Option D, Gir in Gujarat, is the only natural home of the Asiatic lion. Each of the four is a park a paper setter likes to name, so the distinction being tested here is size, not fame.
Which is the longest national highway of India, running from Srinagar to Kanyakumari?
- A.NH 27
- B.NH 48
- C.NH 44
- D.NH 16
Show answer
Correct answer: C. NH 44
Explanation
The correct answer is C, NH 44. NH 44 runs roughly north to south from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, about 3,745 kilometres, and is the longest national highway in India. It was formed by merging several older highways, among them the stretch long known as NH 7, and it passes through the national capital and a long list of states on the way down the peninsula.
Option A, NH 27, is the long east to west highway linking Gujarat with Assam and is one of the longest in the country, but not the longest. Option B, NH 48, connects Delhi with Chennai through Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Option D, NH 16, runs along the eastern coast between Kolkata and Chennai. The numbering itself carries a rule worth remembering: highways running mainly north to south take even numbers and those running east to west take odd numbers.
Which is the largest mosque in India?
- A.Jama Masjid, Delhi
- B.Mecca Masjid, Hyderabad
- C.Moti Masjid, Agra
- D.Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Delhi
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Jama Masjid, Delhi
Explanation
The correct answer is A, Jama Masjid, Delhi. The Jama Masjid was built under Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century in red sandstone and white marble, opposite the Red Fort in Shahjahanabad, and its vast courtyard makes it the largest mosque in India. Its formal name is Masjid-i-Jahan Numa.
Option B, the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, was begun under the Qutb Shahi rulers and is one of the largest mosques of the Deccan, but not the largest in the country. Option C, the Moti Masjid or Pearl Mosque in the Agra Fort, is a small white marble mosque built for the emperor's court, prized for its finish rather than its size. Option D, the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque in the Qutub complex at Delhi, is the earliest surviving mosque built by the Delhi Sultanate and stands beside the Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world. All four are examinable monuments, so the size test is the point of the question.
