National Symbols of Other Countries: Animals and Birds — GK24 title card
National Symbols of Other Countries: Animals and Birds — GK24 title card

Every country keeps a short list of living things and images that stand for it: an animal, a bird, a flower, a tree, an emblem on its coat of arms. Papers set questions on these because the answer is one word and the pairing is fixed, so a candidate either knows it or does not. The safe way to prepare is not a long alphabetical list but a set of small groups, because questions are usually built by putting four neighbours together. This note arranges the symbols that are actually asked, with India kept alongside as the reference point.

India's own symbols, as the benchmark

A question about another country is often paired with one about India, so fix these first. The national animal is the Bengal tiger, the national bird the Indian peacock, the national flower the lotus, the national tree the banyan, the national fruit the mango, the national aquatic animal the Ganges river dolphin and the national reptile the king cobra. The State Emblem of India is adapted from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath and was adopted on 26 January 1950; the motto Satyameva Jayate below it is taken from the Mundaka Upanishad.

Four of these are worth a second look because they are rare animals and the names are unfamiliar. The takin of Bhutan is a goat-antelope of the eastern Himalayas. The markhor of Pakistan is a wild goat with spiralled horns. The springbok of South Africa is the antelope whose name the country's rugby side carries. The carabao of the Philippines is the swamp water buffalo of its fields. The unicorn of Scotland is the one mythical animal in the set, which is exactly why it is asked.

National flowers and trees

  • Nepal: rhododendron, called the lali gurans, as the national flower.
  • Bhutan: the blue poppy as flower and the cypress as tree.
  • Pakistan: jasmine as flower and deodar as tree.
  • Bangladesh: the white water lily as flower and the mango tree as tree.
  • South Africa: the king protea as flower and the yellowwood as tree.
  • Australia: the golden wattle as the floral emblem.
  • Canada: the maple leaf, which the flag carries.
  • Malaysia: the hibiscus, called the bunga raya.
  • South Korea: the rose of Sharon, called the mugunghwa.
  • Philippines: sampaguita as flower and narra as tree.
  • Singapore: the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid.
  • Maldives: the pink rose as flower, the coconut palm as tree and the yellowfin tuna as the national fish.
  • Zimbabwe: the flame lily, with the Zimbabwe bird as the national emblem.
  • Egypt: the lotus, with the Eagle of Saladin as the emblem.

Emblems, personifications and flags

Some countries are represented by an emblem or a figure rather than by an animal. France uses the Gallic rooster as a symbol and Marianne as the female personification of the republic; the United Kingdom has Britannia and the United States Uncle Sam. The four nations of the United Kingdom carry four plants: the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the shamrock for Ireland and the leek and daffodil for Wales, while the flag of Wales carries a red dragon. Ireland's emblem is the harp, Indonesia's is Garuda, Saudi Arabia's is two crossed swords with a palm tree, and Russia's is a double-headed eagle. Among flags, Nepal has the only national flag that is not a quadrilateral, being two stacked pennants, while Switzerland and Vatican City are the two states with square flags.

How the question is set

Three forms recur. The first names a country and asks for its animal, bird or flower. The second names the symbol and asks for the country, which is harder, so learn each pair in both directions. The third puts four neighbours in one set, as with the takin, the markhor, the cow and the royal Bengal tiger for Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Learn the South Asian neighbours first, then Australia, Canada, the United States and South Africa, and the rest after that.

Exam Point of View

Three forms recur. The first names a country and asks for its animal, bird or flower; the second names the symbol and asks for the country, which is harder and needs the pairing learnt both ways; the third collects four neighbours in one set, as with the takin, the markhor, the cow and the royal Bengal tiger for Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. The standing traps are a national bird offered where the stem says animal, as with the emu against the kangaroo and the danphe against the cow, and the three eagles of the United States, Mexico and Russia placed in one question. Flag questions have two answers worth fixing: Nepal for the only non-quadrilateral flag, and Switzerland with Vatican City for the two square flags.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Static GKEasy

Which animal is the national animal of Australia?

  1. A.Koala
  2. B.Red kangaroo
  3. C.Emu
  4. D.Platypus
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Red kangaroo

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the red kangaroo. It is the largest marsupial of the continent and appears on the coat of arms of Australia along with the emu, the two chosen because neither animal can easily walk backwards, which was read as a country always moving forward. Option A, the koala, is one of the best-known animals of Australia but holds no such designation. Option C, the emu, is the national bird and shares the coat of arms with the kangaroo, which makes it the strongest distractor in the set and the reason the stem must be read carefully for the word animal. Option D, the platypus, is an egg-laying mammal found only in Australia and is used as a symbol of the state of New South Wales rather than of the country. Store the pair as kangaroo for animal and emu for bird.

Q2.Static GKEasy

The bald eagle is the national bird of which country?

  1. A.Canada
  2. B.Mexico
  3. C.United States
  4. D.Russia
Show answer
Correct answer: C. United States

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the United States. The bald eagle has been the national bird and the central figure of the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, and the bison was later adopted as the national mammal. Option A, Canada, is wrong; its national animal is the beaver and the maple leaf is its best-known emblem, carried on the flag. Option B, Mexico, is a genuine distractor because its national bird is the golden eagle, shown on its flag gripping a snake while perched on a cactus, so a careless reader sees the word eagle and picks Mexico. Option D, Russia, uses the double-headed eagle on its coat of arms, but that is a heraldic emblem rather than a national bird. Three eagles in one question is the usual design, so attach each to its country.

Q3.Static GKMedium

Which is the national animal of Nepal?

  1. A.Yak
  2. B.Cow
  3. C.Himalayan monal
  4. D.Snow leopard
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Cow

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the cow. Nepal declares the cow its national animal, and the choice follows from its religious standing in the country. Option A, the yak, is the familiar high-altitude animal of the Himalayas and is the obvious guess, which is why it is placed first. Option C, the Himalayan monal, locally called the danphe, is the national bird of Nepal, so this option tests whether the stem was read as animal or bird. Option D, the snow leopard, is the national animal of Afghanistan and is found in the Himalayas as well, which makes it plausible here. The set of Nepali symbols worth memorising is the cow as animal, the danphe as bird, the rhododendron or lali gurans as flower, and a flag that is the only national flag in the world which is not a quadrilateral.

Q4.Static GKHard

The takin is the national animal of which country?

  1. A.Nepal
  2. B.Bhutan
  3. C.Myanmar
  4. D.Mongolia
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Bhutan

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Bhutan. The takin is a heavily built goat-antelope of the eastern Himalayas, and Bhutan ties it to a legend about a saint who joined the head of a goat to the bones of a cow. Option A, Nepal, is wrong because its national animal is the cow, though the two countries are often swapped in a hurried reading. Option C, Myanmar, is wrong; the takin does occur in its northern hills, which is what makes this option plausible. Option D, Mongolia, is wrong, and the horse is the animal most associated with it. The rest of Bhutan's symbols complete a high-yield set: the raven as national bird, the blue poppy as national flower, the cypress as national tree, and the thunder dragon, the Druk, on the flag, from which the country takes its name Druk Yul.

Q5.Static GKMedium

The markhor, a wild goat with spiralled horns, is the national animal of which country?

  1. A.Afghanistan
  2. B.Pakistan
  3. C.Iran
  4. D.Tajikistan
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Pakistan

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Pakistan. The markhor lives in the mountain ranges of the north and west of the country, and its spiralled horns make it easy to recognise in a picture-based question. Option A, Afghanistan, is the closest distractor, because the snow leopard is its national animal and the markhor is also found there. Option C, Iran, is wrong; the Asiatic lion and the Persian leopard are associated with its history rather than a current designation of this kind. Option D, Tajikistan, is wrong as well, though the Marco Polo sheep of the Pamirs belongs to the same family of wild mountain animals. Pakistan's other symbols are the chukar partridge as national bird, jasmine as national flower, the deodar as national tree and the snow leopard as a protected species rather than a symbol.

Q6.Static GKMedium

The king protea is the national flower of which country?

  1. A.Australia
  2. B.New Zealand
  3. C.South Africa
  4. D.Kenya
Show answer
Correct answer: C. South Africa

Explanation

The correct answer is C, South Africa. The king protea is the largest flower of the protea family, which grows in the fynbos vegetation of the Cape, and South Africa's national cricket team takes its name from it. Option A, Australia, is wrong; its floral emblem is the golden wattle, and its animal and bird are the red kangaroo and the emu. Option B, New Zealand, is wrong, and its best-known symbols are the kiwi as national bird and the silver fern as a national emblem. Option D, Kenya, is wrong as well. South Africa is the country with the fullest set of official symbols in these papers, so learn them together: the springbok as animal, the blue crane as bird, the king protea as flower, the yellowwood as tree and the galjoen as national fish.

Q7.Static GKEasy

The beaver is the national animal of which country?

  1. A.Norway
  2. B.Canada
  3. C.Switzerland
  4. D.Sweden
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Canada

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Canada. The beaver was given official standing as a symbol of Canada because the fur trade in beaver pelts drove the early European exploration and settlement of the country, and the animal appears on the five-cent coin. Option A, Norway, is wrong, and the dipper is its national bird. Option C, Switzerland, is wrong; it has no national animal of this kind, but it is worth remembering that Switzerland and Vatican City are the only two states with square national flags. Option D, Sweden, is wrong as well. Canada's other symbols are the maple leaf, which the flag carries at its centre, and the maple as the national tree, while the Canadian horse also holds statutory recognition as a national symbol.

Q8.Static GKHard

Which mythical creature is the national animal of Scotland?

  1. A.Dragon
  2. B.Griffin
  3. C.Unicorn
  4. D.Phoenix
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Unicorn

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the unicorn. Scotland has used the unicorn in its royal arms since the fifteenth century, reading it as a symbol of purity and of a strength that cannot be captured, and it is the only mythical animal among the national animals usually asked. Option A, the dragon, is wrong for Scotland but is a genuine distractor because a red dragon fills the flag of Wales and the thunder dragon appears on the flag of Bhutan. Option B, the griffin, is a heraldic creature used by several cities and families but not as a national animal. Option D, the phoenix, is wrong as well. The plants of the four nations of the United Kingdom belong with this: the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the shamrock for Ireland and the leek and daffodil for Wales.

Q9.Static GKMedium

Which country has the only national flag in the world that is not a quadrilateral?

  1. A.Switzerland
  2. B.Nepal
  3. C.Vatican City
  4. D.Bhutan
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Nepal

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Nepal. The flag of Nepal is made of two stacked triangular pennants, the upper carrying a white moon and the lower a white sun, and its proportions are laid down by a geometrical construction in the constitution, which makes it unique among national flags. Option A, Switzerland, is a strong distractor because its flag is unusual in a different way: it is square rather than rectangular. Option C, Vatican City, is the other state with a square flag, so these two go together and neither is the answer here. Option D, Bhutan, has an ordinary rectangular flag, divided diagonally in yellow and orange with the white thunder dragon across it, and it is offered because it is the Himalayan neighbour. The distinction to hold is non-quadrilateral for Nepal and square for Switzerland and Vatican City.

Q10.Static GKHard

The green pheasant is the national bird of which country?

  1. A.China
  2. B.Japan
  3. C.South Korea
  4. D.Vietnam
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Japan

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Japan. The green pheasant, which is found only in Japan, was designated its national bird by the country's ornithological society, and the bird appears in Japanese folk tales as a companion of the boy hero Momotaro. Option A, China, is wrong; the giant panda is its national animal and the peony is its traditional floral symbol, while a national bird has never been settled by law. Option C, South Korea, is wrong, and the magpie is treated as its national bird while the rose of Sharon, the mugunghwa, is its national flower. Option D, Vietnam, is wrong as well, and the lotus is its national flower. Keep the Japanese set together: the green pheasant as bird, the chrysanthemum as the imperial emblem and the cherry blossom as the flower people associate with the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the cow as its national animal?

Nepal. Its other symbols are the Himalayan monal, locally called the danphe, as the national bird and the rhododendron, the lali gurans, as the national flower. The yak is the usual wrong answer because it is the animal most associated with the high Himalayas, so the pairing has to be learnt rather than guessed.

What are the national animals of Bhutan and Pakistan?

Bhutan's national animal is the takin, a goat-antelope of the eastern Himalayas tied to a local legend, and Pakistan's is the markhor, a wild goat with spiralled horns found in its northern and western mountains. The snow leopard, which is the national animal of Afghanistan, is the distractor placed with both.

Which countries have square national flags?

Switzerland and Vatican City are the only two states with square national flags. Separately, Nepal has the only national flag that is not a quadrilateral at all, being two stacked triangular pennants carrying a white moon and a white sun, with its geometry laid down in the constitution.

What are the national plants of the four nations of the United Kingdom?

The rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the shamrock for Ireland, and the leek with the daffodil for Wales. The national animals that go with them are the lion for England and the unicorn for Scotland, while a red dragon fills the flag of Wales and the harp is the emblem of Ireland.

Which eagles are national birds, and of which countries?

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States and the central figure on its Great Seal, the golden eagle is the national bird of Mexico and appears on its flag with a snake and a cactus, and the Philippine eagle is the national bird of the Philippines. Russia's double-headed eagle, by contrast, is a heraldic emblem rather than a national bird.
