Drones, Robotics and Automation: Exam Notes
Science and technology notes on drones, robotics and automation: the Drone Rules of 2021, weight classes, Indian drones and robots, PLCs, SCADA and key terms.
By GK24 Editorial Team· Published · 4 min read

Machines that fly without a pilot, arms that weld without a worker and plants that run with a controller instead of a foreman are now a standing part of general awareness papers. The questions are of three kinds: a definition or a full form, a rule from the Drone Rules of 2021, or the name of an Indian drone or robot. This note begins with drones and the law that governs them, moves to robotics and its vocabulary, then to automation and its levels, and ends with the Indian programmes an examiner is likely to name.
Drones and how they fly
A drone, formally an unmanned aerial vehicle, is an aircraft that carries no pilot on board and is flown from the ground or by its own programme; with its ground station and its radio link it is called an unmanned aircraft system. A small multirotor drone has an airframe, propellers driven by brushless motors, electronic speed controllers, a lithium polymer battery, and a flight controller that reads an inertial measurement unit of accelerometers and gyroscopes along with a satellite navigation receiver and a barometer, and then keeps the craft level. Fixed wing drones fly longer and faster; multirotors can hover. Their uses run from mapping, survey and crop spraying to the delivery of medicine, the inspection of power lines and military surveillance.
The Drone Rules, 2021
India replaced its earlier rules with the Drone Rules, 2021, notified by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation as the regulator and the Digital Sky platform as the single window for registration and permissions. Every drone needs a unique identification number, and a pilot other than of the smallest class needs a remote pilot certificate.
| Class | All up weight |
|---|---|
| Nano | Up to 250 grams |
| Micro | Above 250 grams and up to 2 kilograms |
| Small | Above 2 kilograms and up to 25 kilograms |
| Medium | Above 25 kilograms and up to 150 kilograms |
| Large | Above 150 kilograms |
The airspace map divides the country into three zones. In the green zone a drone may be flown up to a set height without permission; the yellow zone is controlled airspace where permission is needed; the red zone is where no flight is allowed except by permission of the central government. Flying over a no fly area such as an airport approach, a military station or a national border is an offence.
Drones in Indian programmes
- SVAMITVA, a scheme of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched in 2020, surveys inhabited land in villages with drones and gives residents property cards.
- Kisan drones are used for spraying pesticides and nutrients and for crop surveys, and women's self help groups have been supplied drones for hiring out to farmers.
- Medicine from the Sky and the i-Drone trials carried vaccines and medicines to places that roads reach slowly.
- A production linked incentive scheme for drones and their components was approved in 2021 to build the industry in India.
- Military drones of Indian make include the DRDO's Lakshya, a pilotless target aircraft, Nishant, Netra, a small quadcopter for surveillance, and TAPAS BH, earlier called Rustom II, a medium altitude long endurance vehicle; the Ghatak is a stealth combat drone under development.
Robotics
A robot is a programmable machine that senses, decides and acts on the physical world. The word came from the Czech play R.U.R., written by Karel Capek in 1920, from the word robota, meaning forced labour; the word robotics and the famous three laws of robotics came from the writer Isaac Asimov. A robot arm is described by its degrees of freedom, the number of independent movements it can make; it ends in an end effector, a gripper or a tool; it is moved by actuators, electric, hydraulic or pneumatic; and it is guided by sensors. Industrial robots are classified as articulated, cartesian, cylindrical, spherical, SCARA and delta by the geometry of their joints, and are set to work on welding, painting, assembly and packing. Vyommitra, built by ISRO, is a half humanoid robot meant to fly on an uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, and hospital and police robots such as MITRA and KP-Bot have been used in India.
Automation and its levels
Automation is the use of control systems so that a process runs with little human help. An open loop system acts on its input without checking the result; a closed loop system measures the output and feeds that measurement back to the controller, which corrects the error, as a thermostat does. Automation is of three kinds: fixed or hard automation for one product in large volume, programmable automation which can be reset for a new batch, and flexible automation which changes over without stopping. The common pieces of hardware are the PLC or programmable logic controller, which runs a plant on digital input and output; SCADA, supervisory control and data acquisition, which monitors a whole system from a control room; CNC or computer numerical control machines; and the robot cell. Mechatronics is the field that joins mechanical engineering, electronics and computing, and Industry 4.0 names the stage in which sensors, networks, data and artificial intelligence are joined into cyber physical systems. In offices the same idea appears as robotic process automation, software that performs repeated clerical steps.
Exam Point of View
Three question types cover this topic. The first asks for a full form or a definition: UAV, PLC, SCADA, CNC, RPA, degrees of freedom, end effector, open and closed loop. The second asks a rule from the Drone Rules of 2021, where the weight classes, the 250 gram limit for a nano drone, the three colour zones and the Digital Sky platform are set most often. The third asks for a name: Lakshya as a pilotless target aircraft, TAPAS BH as the long endurance drone, Vyommitra as the ISRO robot, SVAMITVA as the drone mapping scheme, Karel Capek for the word robot and Asimov for its three laws. The traps are crediting the word robot to Asimov, who gave only robotics and the laws, putting the drone regulator under the Ministry of Defence instead of civil aviation, and taking automation to mean a robot, when a PLC controlled plant with no robot is automation too.

Practice MCQs on this topic
A technology for the application of mechanical, electronics, and computer-based systems to control and operate the systems is called.
- A.PLC
- B.Sequential controller
- C.Microprocessor-based systems
- D.Automation
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Automation
Explanation
The correct answer is D, automation. Automation is the technology in which mechanical parts, electronics and computer based control are put together so that a process is controlled and operated with little human help, which is exactly the description in the question. Option A is wrong because a PLC, the programmable logic controller, is only one device used in automation, the controller that reads inputs and switches outputs; it is a part and not the technology as a whole. Option B is wrong because a sequential controller is a still narrower idea, a controller that steps through operations in a fixed order. Option C is wrong because microprocessor based systems name the computing hardware, which may be used in automation or in any other electronic product. Remember that the broad term is automation and the devices inside it are the PLC, SCADA and CNC.
The word robot was first used in a play written by whom?
- A.Isaac Asimov
- B.Karel Capek
- C.George Devol
- D.Alan Turing
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Karel Capek
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Karel Capek. The Czech writer Karel Capek used the word in his play R.U.R., or Rossum's Universal Robots, written in 1920, taking it from the Czech word robota, which means forced labour. Option A is wrong, though it is the favourite trap: Isaac Asimov coined the word robotics and framed the three laws of robotics, but not the word robot itself. Option C is wrong because George Devol invented the first industrial robot arm, the Unimate, which went to work in a factory, a matter of engineering and not of naming. Option D is wrong because Alan Turing is remembered for the theory of computing and for the test of machine intelligence. Keep Capek for the word robot and Asimov for robotics and the three laws.
The three laws of robotics were given by which writer?
- A.Arthur C. Clarke
- B.Isaac Asimov
- C.H. G. Wells
- D.Jules Verne
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Isaac Asimov
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Isaac Asimov. Asimov set out the three laws in his science fiction, by which a robot may not harm a human being, must obey the orders given by human beings except where that conflicts with the first law, and must protect itself except where that conflicts with the first two laws; he also coined the word robotics. Option A is wrong because Arthur C. Clarke is remembered for the idea of the geostationary communication satellite and for his own fiction. Option C is wrong because H. G. Wells wrote earlier scientific romances such as The Time Machine. Option D is wrong because Jules Verne wrote of submarines and journeys long before the robot was imagined. The order of the three laws is itself asked, so learn it.
Under the Drone Rules, 2021, a drone of the nano class has an all up weight of
- A.up to 250 grams
- B.up to 2 kilograms
- C.up to 25 kilograms
- D.up to 150 kilograms
Show answer
Correct answer: A. up to 250 grams
Explanation
The correct answer is A, up to 250 grams. The rules class drones by all up weight, which includes the battery and the payload, and the nano class is the smallest, up to 250 grams, which is why the lightest toy and camera drones fall in it and are treated most lightly by the law. Option B is wrong because above 250 grams and up to 2 kilograms is the micro class. Option C is wrong because above 2 kilograms and up to 25 kilograms is the small class, which is the usual size for survey and spraying drones. Option D is wrong because above 25 kilograms and up to 150 kilograms is the medium class, and anything heavier is large. Learn the ladder as 250 grams, 2, 25 and 150 kilograms.
Which platform is the single window for drone registration and permissions in India?
- A.Digital Sky
- B.Bhuvan
- C.DigiLocker
- D.UMANG
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Digital Sky
Explanation
The correct answer is A, Digital Sky. Digital Sky is the online platform of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on which a drone is registered and given its unique identification number, on which the airspace map with its green, yellow and red zones is published, and through which flight permissions are sought. Option B is wrong because Bhuvan is the geoportal of ISRO, which serves satellite imagery and maps. Option C is wrong because DigiLocker is the government service for keeping and sharing personal documents such as mark sheets and licences. Option D is wrong because UMANG is the single mobile application for many government services. Fix Digital Sky with the Drone Rules of 2021 and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Papers also ask which ministry notified the Drone Rules, and the answer is the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
In the field of aviation technology, UAV stands for
- A.Universal Air Vehicle
- B.Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
- C.Unified Avionics Vehicle
- D.Upper Atmosphere Vehicle
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Explanation
The correct answer is B, unmanned aerial vehicle. A UAV is an aircraft with no pilot on board, flown either by a remote pilot or by its own programme, and when it is counted together with its ground control station and the radio link between them the whole is called an unmanned aircraft system. Option A is wrong because universal air vehicle is not a term used in aviation. Option C is wrong because avionics is the name for the electronic systems of an aircraft, and no vehicle class is named after it. Option D is wrong because upper atmosphere vehicle is not a standard expression either, though high altitude pseudo satellites do fly in the stratosphere. For the exam, pair UAV with drone and UAS with the whole system.
Lakshya, developed by the DRDO, is which kind of aerial vehicle?
- A.A pilotless target aircraft
- B.A passenger aircraft
- C.A helicopter gunship
- D.A reusable launch vehicle
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A pilotless target aircraft
Explanation
The correct answer is A, a pilotless target aircraft. Lakshya was developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the DRDO to be flown as a target so that gun crews and missile units can practise against a realistic moving aircraft, and it is recovered by parachute. Option B is wrong because India's passenger aircraft programmes are of a different line altogether, such as the Saras light transport aircraft. Option C is wrong because the armed helicopters in Indian service are the Rudra and the Light Combat Helicopter, which carry crew. Option D is wrong because the reusable launch vehicle is an ISRO programme for space access. Along with Lakshya, remember Nishant, Netra and TAPAS BH, which was earlier called Rustom II. Note also that the Ghatak is the stealth combat drone of the same organisation, still under development.
Vyommitra, built by ISRO, is
- A.a weather satellite
- B.a half humanoid robot
- C.a space telescope
- D.a launch pad
Show answer
Correct answer: B. a half humanoid robot
Explanation
The correct answer is B, a half humanoid robot. Vyommitra has a head, a face, arms and a torso but no legs, which is why it is called half humanoid, and it has been built to ride an uncrewed flight of the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, operate switches, watch the panels and report conditions as a crew member would. Option A is wrong because the Indian weather satellites are the INSAT series and the Oceansat and Scatsat spacecraft. Option C is wrong because the Indian space observatory is AstroSat, and Aditya L1 studies the Sun. Option D is wrong because the launch pads are at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. Hold Vyommitra with Gaganyaan, and remember that its name joins the words for sky and friend.
In industrial automation, PLC stands for
- A.Power Line Carrier
- B.Programmable Logic Controller
- C.Process Level Computer
- D.Programmed Linear Circuit
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Programmable Logic Controller
Explanation
The correct answer is B, programmable logic controller. A PLC is a rugged industrial computer that reads the state of switches and sensors as inputs, runs a stored programme of logic, and switches motors, valves and lamps as outputs, so that a machine or a whole line runs by itself. Option A is wrong because power line carrier is a method of sending signals over electric power lines, used in communication, not a controller. Option C is wrong because process level computer is not a standard term in automation. Option D is wrong because programmed linear circuit is not a recognised class of device either. Note that SCADA sits above the PLC, watching and recording a whole plant from a control room, while the PLC does the switching.
SCADA, widely used in power and water systems, stands for
- A.Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
- B.System Control and Digital Automation
- C.Sequential Control and Data Analysis
- D.Safety Control and Device Assembly
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
Explanation
The correct answer is A, supervisory control and data acquisition. A SCADA system gathers readings from sensors and controllers spread over a plant, a grid or a water network, shows them on screens in a control room, records them, and lets an operator send commands back, which is why it is described as supervisory control together with data acquisition. Option B is wrong because system control and digital automation is not the expansion of the term, though it sounds plausible. Option C is wrong because sequential control and data analysis describes two different ideas and is not the full form. Option D is wrong because safety control and device assembly is not a term used in this field. Remember the pair, PLC on the machine and SCADA in the control room.
The SVAMITVA scheme uses drones mainly for which purpose?
- A.Spraying pesticides on crops
- B.Surveying inhabited village land for property cards
- C.Delivering vaccines to remote areas
- D.Patrolling the international border
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Surveying inhabited village land for property cards
Explanation
The correct answer is B, surveying inhabited village land for property cards. SVAMITVA, launched in 2020 by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, flies drones over the abadi or inhabited area of villages to make accurate maps, from which residents are given property cards that record their ownership and can be used to raise loans. Option A is wrong because spraying is the work of kisan drones under agriculture programmes, which is a separate use. Option C is wrong because vaccine and medicine delivery was tested under the i-Drone effort and the Medicine from the Sky trials. Option D is wrong because border patrolling is done by the armed forces and the border guarding forces with their own systems. Fix SVAMITVA with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and property cards.
Which of the following is the defining feature of a closed loop control system?
- A.It has no controller
- B.It feeds the measured output back to the controller
- C.It works only on alternating current
- D.It cannot be programmed
Show answer
Correct answer: B. It feeds the measured output back to the controller
Explanation
The correct answer is B, it feeds the measured output back to the controller. In a closed loop system a sensor measures what the process is actually doing, that measurement is compared with the desired value, and the controller acts on the difference, which is what a thermostat, a cruise control or a water level controller does. Option A is wrong because a closed loop system must have a controller; it is the feedback path, not the controller, that distinguishes it. Option C is wrong because the type of electric supply has nothing to do with the loop, and such systems run on direct current and on compressed air as well. Option D is wrong because closed loop systems are very often programmable, a PLC being the usual example. An open loop system, by contrast, never checks its own result.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the weight limit of a nano drone under the Drone Rules, 2021?
A nano drone has an all up weight of up to 250 grams, including its battery and payload. The next class, micro, runs above 250 grams up to 2 kilograms, then small up to 25 kilograms, medium up to 150 kilograms and large above that.
Who gave the word robot and who gave the three laws of robotics?
The word robot came from the Czech play R.U.R. written by Karel Capek in 1920, from robota, meaning forced labour. The word robotics and the three laws of robotics came later from the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.
What is the difference between an open loop and a closed loop control system?
An open loop system acts on its input and does not check what happened, as a simple timer does. A closed loop system measures the output with a sensor, feeds that measurement back to the controller and corrects the difference, as a thermostat or a cruise control does.
What are the green, yellow and red zones for drones?
They are the three parts of the airspace map. A drone may fly in the green zone up to a set height without permission, needs permission in the yellow zone, which is controlled airspace, and may not fly in a red zone except with permission of the central government.
Which robot has ISRO built for its human spaceflight programme?
Vyommitra, a half humanoid robot with a head, arms and a torso but no legs, meant to ride an uncrewed Gaganyaan flight, operate switches, read panels and report conditions as a human crew member would.
