Defence Aircraft, Ships and Submarines of India: Notes — GK24 title card

Questions on defence platforms are among the easiest marks in a general awareness paper, because the answer is a name attached to a role, a maker or a shipyard. The pattern is fixed: an aircraft with the agency that designed it, a warship with the yard that built it, a submarine with its class. This note arranges the platforms of the three services in that order and keeps to what does not change, that is the design, the builder and the type, rather than to numbers of units in service, which move every year.

For transport and special roles the air force flies the C-17 Globemaster III as its heavy lifter, the C-130J Super Hercules for special operations, the IL-76, called Gajraj in service, the AN-32 and the C-295, which is being built in India at Vadodara. Airborne early warning is done by the Netra system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation on an Embraer aircraft and by the Phalcon radar mounted on the IL-76, while the IL-78 does mid-air refuelling. Among unmanned aircraft, Nishant and the TAPAS or Rustom series are Indian designs, and the Kaveri engine of the Gas Turbine Research Establishment is the long-running Indian effort at a fighter engine. The air-to-air missile carried by Indian fighters is Astra, and the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, developed jointly with Russia, is carried by aircraft, ships and land launchers alike.

Aircraft carriers and surface warships

India has operated four aircraft carriers in its history. The first INS Vikrant, bought from Britain, served from 1961 and took part in the war of 1971; INS Viraat followed and served until 2017. The carrier in service built abroad is INS Vikramaditya, a rebuilt Russian ship formerly named Admiral Gorshkov. The second is the new INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier designed and built in India, constructed at Cochin Shipyard in Kochi and commissioned in September 2022; it operates aircraft by the ski-jump method, in which a fighter takes off up a curved ramp and lands with an arrester wire.

The surface fleet is built around classes named after their lead ship, and each class belongs to a project number.

  • Destroyers: the Delhi class of Project 15, the Kolkata class of Project 15A and the Visakhapatnam class of Project 15B, which includes INS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao and INS Imphal; the older Rajput class is of Russian design.
  • Frigates: the Shivalik class of Project 17, the Nilgiri class of Project 17A and the Talwar class built in Russia.
  • Corvettes: the Kamorta class of Project 28, built for anti-submarine warfare.

The yards that build them are themselves a favourite question. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai builds destroyers and submarines, Cochin Shipyard built the indigenous carrier, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata builds frigates and corvettes, Goa Shipyard builds patrol vessels and Hindustan Shipyard works at Visakhapatnam. The first warship built in India was the seaward defence boat INS Ajay in 1961, and INS Nilgiri of 1972 was the first frigate built in the country.

Submarines and the nuclear triad

Indian submarines fall into three families. The conventional diesel-electric boats of the Kalvari class are built at Mazagon Dock to the French Scorpene design and include INS Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela, Vagir and Vagsheer; the older Shishumar class is of German design and the Sindhughosh class is of Russian Kilo design. The nuclear-powered boats carrying ballistic missiles are of the Arihant class, built under the Advanced Technology Vessel programme; INS Arihant, commissioned in 2016, was the first nuclear submarine built in India and completed the country's nuclear triad, that is the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon from land, air and sea, in its case with the K-15 Sagarika missile. India has also operated leased Russian nuclear attack submarines under the name INS Chakra. The first submarine of the Indian Navy was the original INS Kalvari of 1967, of Soviet Foxtrot design, and the decommissioned INS Kursura is preserved as a submarine museum at Visakhapatnam.

Commands and terms worth knowing

  • The Navy has three commands: Western at Mumbai, Eastern at Visakhapatnam and Southern at Kochi, which is the training command.
  • The Andaman and Nicobar Command at Port Blair is India's only tri-service command.
  • A submarine's air-independent propulsion lets a conventional boat stay submerged far longer without surfacing to run its diesel engines.
  • Displacement, measured in tonnes, is how the size of a warship is stated, not length alone.

Exam Point of View

Expect a name-to-role question first: Tejas as the light combat aircraft, Prachand as the light combat helicopter, Netra as the airborne early warning system, C-17 Globemaster as the heavy lifter. The second type is the builder or the country, where the pairs to be sure of are Rafale with Dassault of France, Su-30MKI with Russia and HAL at Nashik, Apache and Chinook with Boeing. The third type is the shipyard, so keep Cochin Shipyard with the indigenous carrier INS Vikrant, Mazagon Dock with the Kalvari submarines and the Project 15B destroyers, and Garden Reach with frigates and corvettes. Project numbers are asked in officer-level papers, where Project 15B is the Visakhapatnam class and Project 17A the Nilgiri class. The traps are to confuse the old INS Vikrant of 1961 with the new carrier of 2022, to call INS Arihant an attack submarine rather than a ballistic missile submarine, and to treat the Kalvari class as Russian rather than Scorpene.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Science & TechnologyEasy

INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier designed and built in India, was constructed at which shipyard?

  1. A.Mazagon Dock, Mumbai
  2. B.Cochin Shipyard, Kochi
  3. C.Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Kolkata
  4. D.Hindustan Shipyard, Visakhapatnam
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Cochin Shipyard, Kochi

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Cochin Shipyard, Kochi. The indigenous aircraft carrier, commissioned in September 2022 as INS Vikrant, was designed by the Navy's own design organisation and built at Cochin Shipyard in Kerala, which made India one of the few countries able to build a carrier. Option A, Mazagon Dock in Mumbai, builds destroyers of the Project 15 series and the Kalvari class submarines, but not carriers. Option C, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, builds frigates and anti-submarine corvettes. Option D, Hindustan Shipyard at Visakhapatnam, works on submarine refits and merchant and support vessels. Note that the name Vikrant was carried earlier by the carrier bought from Britain that served from 1961 and took part in the war of 1971, so the two ships must not be confused.

Q2.Science & TechnologyEasy

Tejas, the Light Combat Aircraft of the Indian Air Force, is manufactured by which organisation?

  1. A.Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
  2. B.Bharat Electronics Limited
  3. C.Bharat Dynamics Limited
  4. D.Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Tejas is a single-engine multirole fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the public sector company that also builds the Dhruv helicopter, the Prachand light combat helicopter and the Su-30MKI under licence at Nashik. Option B, Bharat Electronics Limited, makes radars, communication sets and electronic warfare equipment, not airframes. Option C, Bharat Dynamics Limited, makes missiles and torpedoes such as the Akash and the Nag. Option D, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, builds warships and submarines. The Indian attempt at a fighter engine for Tejas, the Kaveri, belongs to the Gas Turbine Research Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, while the engine flown on the aircraft today is imported. Learn the trio together: the agency designs, HAL builds and the DRDO laboratories supply the systems.

Q3.Science & TechnologyMedium

The Kalvari class submarines of the Indian Navy are built to which foreign design?

  1. A.Russian Kilo design
  2. B.German Type 209 design
  3. C.French Scorpene design
  4. D.Swedish Gotland design
Show answer

Correct answer: C. French Scorpene design

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the French Scorpene design. The Kalvari class are conventional diesel-electric attack submarines built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai to the Scorpene design under a transfer of technology, and the class includes INS Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela, Vagir and Vagsheer. Option A, the Russian Kilo design, is the basis of the Sindhughosh class, whose names begin with Sindhu. Option B, the German design, is the basis of the Shishumar class built earlier with help from Germany. Option D, the Swedish Gotland design, is not used by the Indian Navy, although Sweden pioneered air-independent propulsion, the technology that lets a conventional submarine stay submerged much longer. The nuclear-powered boats are separate: the Arihant class, built under the Advanced Technology Vessel programme.

Q4.Science & TechnologyMedium

INS Arihant, commissioned in 2016, is best described as

  1. A.India's first indigenous aircraft carrier
  2. B.India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine
  3. C.India's first conventional submarine
  4. D.India's first guided missile destroyer
Show answer

Correct answer: B. India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine

Explanation

The correct answer is B, India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine. INS Arihant was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel programme and commissioned in 2016; because it carries ballistic missiles, the K-15 Sagarika among them, it completed India's nuclear triad, that is the ability to launch a nuclear weapon from land, from the air and from the sea. Option A is wrong because the first indigenous aircraft carrier is the new INS Vikrant of 2022. Option C is wrong because the Navy's first submarine was the original INS Kalvari of 1967, of Soviet Foxtrot design. Option D is wrong because India's first guided missile destroyers belong to the Rajput and later the Delhi class. A nuclear submarine that hunts other ships is an attack submarine, which is a different role from Arihant's.

Q5.Science & TechnologyEasy

The Rafale fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force is made by which company?

  1. A.Dassault Aviation of France
  2. B.Boeing of the United States
  3. C.Sukhoi of Russia
  4. D.Saab of Sweden
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Dassault Aviation of France

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Dassault Aviation of France. Rafale is a twin-engine multirole fighter made by Dassault Aviation, the same French company that made the Mirage 2000 flown by India since the 1980s, and the first Indian Rafale squadron was raised at Ambala. Option B, Boeing of the United States, supplies India the Apache attack helicopter, the Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, the C-17 Globemaster III transport and the P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. Option C, Sukhoi of Russia, designed the Su-30MKI, which Hindustan Aeronautics Limited assembles at Nashik. Option D, Saab of Sweden, makes the Gripen, which India does not operate. Keeping the country with the maker, France for Dassault, the United States for Boeing and Russia for Sukhoi and Mikoyan, answers most questions of this family, because papers ask for the country as often as for the company.

Q6.Science & TechnologyMedium

Prachand, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is which kind of platform?

  1. A.A light combat helicopter
  2. B.A basic trainer aircraft
  3. C.An unmanned aerial vehicle
  4. D.A maritime patrol aircraft
Show answer

Correct answer: A. A light combat helicopter

Explanation

The correct answer is A, a light combat helicopter. Prachand is the Light Combat Helicopter developed and built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, designed to operate from high-altitude bases, which makes it suited to the Siachen and Ladakh sectors where few attack helicopters can carry a useful load. Option B, a basic trainer, is the role of the HAL HTT-40, while the HJT-16 Kiran served as an intermediate jet trainer. Option C, an unmanned aerial vehicle, describes Nishant and the TAPAS or Rustom series of Indian designs. Option D, a maritime patrol aircraft, describes the P-8I flown by the Navy for surveillance and anti-submarine work. HAL's other helicopters worth remembering are Dhruv, the advanced light helicopter, and Rudra, its armed version, while the Apache attack helicopter and the Chinook heavy-lift helicopter are imported from Boeing of the United States.

Q7.Science & TechnologyMedium

Which is India's only tri-service command, where the Army, Navy and Air Force serve under one commander-in-chief?

  1. A.Western Naval Command, Mumbai
  2. B.Andaman and Nicobar Command, Port Blair
  3. C.Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam
  4. D.Southern Naval Command, Kochi
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Andaman and Nicobar Command, Port Blair

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Andaman and Nicobar Command, Port Blair. It is the only command in which units of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force work under a single commander-in-chief, an arrangement adopted because the islands lie far from the mainland and guard the approaches to the Malacca Strait. Option A, the Western Naval Command at Mumbai, is a naval command and the home of the carrier fleet on the west coast. Option C, the Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam, is the Navy's command on the east coast. Option D, the Southern Naval Command at Kochi, is the Navy's training command. All three of the latter are naval commands alone, which is the distinction the question tests, and the Strategic Forces Command, which handles nuclear weapons, is a separate tri-service body rather than a geographical command.

Q8.Science & TechnologyHard

The aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya was earlier known by which name?

  1. A.HMS Hercules
  2. B.HMS Hermes
  3. C.Admiral Gorshkov
  4. D.Baku Maru
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Admiral Gorshkov

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Admiral Gorshkov. INS Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev class ship of Soviet origin, formerly named Admiral Gorshkov, which was rebuilt in Russia and handed over to India, entering service as an aircraft carrier operating MiG-29K fighters. Option A, HMS Hercules, was the British ship that India completed and commissioned in 1961 as the first INS Vikrant. Option B, HMS Hermes, was the British carrier that served India as INS Viraat until 2017. Option D is not the name of any Indian carrier. The full line of Indian carriers is therefore the first Vikrant from 1961, Viraat, Vikramaditya and the new indigenous Vikrant of 2022, and papers often ask which of them was built in India, the answer being only the last.

Q9.Science & TechnologyHard

The destroyers built under Project 15B of the Indian Navy are known as which class?

  1. A.Delhi class
  2. B.Kolkata class
  3. C.Visakhapatnam class
  4. D.Shivalik class
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Visakhapatnam class

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the Visakhapatnam class. Project 15B produced the Visakhapatnam class of guided missile destroyers, built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai, which includes INS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao and INS Imphal. Option A, the Delhi class, came from the original Project 15, the first destroyers designed in India. Option B, the Kolkata class, came from Project 15A, the step between the Delhi and Visakhapatnam classes. Option D, the Shivalik class, is not a destroyer class at all but the frigates of Project 17, which were followed by the Nilgiri class frigates of Project 17A. The numbering is worth learning as a ladder, Project 15, 15A and 15B for destroyers and Project 17 and 17A for frigates, with Project 28 for the Kamorta class anti-submarine corvettes.

Q10.Science & TechnologyMedium

The heavy-lift transport aircraft C-17 of the Indian Air Force is known by which name?

  1. A.Globemaster III
  2. B.Super Hercules
  3. C.Gajraj
  4. D.Netra
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Globemaster III

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Globemaster III. The C-17 Globemaster III, made by Boeing, is the heaviest transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force and is used to move troops, vehicles and relief material over long distances, including to high-altitude airfields. Option B, Super Hercules, is the name of the C-130J, a smaller transport used chiefly for special operations and short landing strips. Option C, Gajraj, is the service name of the Russian IL-76 transport, from which the Phalcon airborne early warning radar is also flown. Option D, Netra, is not a transport at all but the airborne early warning and control system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation on an Embraer aircraft. Mid-air refuelling is done by the IL-78, which is a tanker version of the same Russian aircraft.
