Why in News

On 3 September 2026 the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment announced a National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse for the 6th anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, and held two coordination meetings to plan it.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said on 3 September 2026 that a National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse has been planned for this month. It marks the 6th anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The Ministry is the nodal Ministry for the campaign and wants to bring in more than 10 crore citizens, both in person and online.

How the pledge will be organised

Two high-level coordination meetings were held in the national capital on the same day. They were chaired by Dr Sandeep Rewaji Rathod, Joint Secretary for Drug Prevention in the Ministry. Director Astik Kumar Pandey and Under Secretary Arun Kumar Karn also attended, along with senior representatives of several ministries and departments. The meetings worked out how line ministries will mobilise officers, students, parents and volunteers. Pledge ceremonies will be held in affiliated offices, educational institutions, autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings and field formations. Railways, Defence, Civil Defence, Youth Affairs and Sports, School and Higher Education, Post, Police, the Central Armed Police Forces, NCC, AYUSH, Rural Development and Health and Family Welfare are among those involved. A uniform reporting mechanism was settled for submitting participation details.

The framework behind the campaign

The Ministry launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on 15 August 2020 to curb the demand for drugs. It coordinates prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, aftercare, public information and community awareness. The strategy runs under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, and it rests on the findings of the first National Survey on the Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India. That survey was conducted by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi. Under the plan the Ministry gives financial help to State Governments, Union Territories, non-government organisations and government hospitals for preventive education, awareness, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation. Citizens can volunteer by registering as a Nasha Mukti Mitra on the Department's website. The Ministry has also launched the NMBA 2.0 mobile application, through which a citizen can find the nearest de-addiction centre. The pledge itself asks people to stay away from drugs, to act responsibly and to help the victims of substance abuse.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesEasy

When was the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan launched?

  1. A.2 October 2019
  2. B.15 August 2020
  3. C.26 January 2021
  4. D.1 April 2022
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 15 August 2020

Explanation

The correct answer is 15 August 2020. The release states that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on that date to combat the demand for drugs in the country, which is why the campaign is now marking its sixth anniversary with a National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse. Options A, C and D are national dates of the kind examiners attach to schemes to see whether a candidate has memorised the correct one; none of them appears in this release. The anniversary arithmetic is itself a favourite question, so keep the launch year and the ordinal number together. Two more facts belong with the answer: the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal Ministry for the campaign, and the pledge aims to bring in more than 10 crore citizens through physical and online participation.

Q2.Government SchemesMedium

How many citizens has the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan reached through nationwide awareness activities?

  1. A.More than 10.65 crore
  2. B.More than 13.71 crore
  3. C.More than 25.40 crore
  4. D.More than 34.56 crore
Show answer

Correct answer: D. More than 34.56 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is more than 34.56 crore. That is the total reach of the campaign as stated in the release. The two smaller figures in options A and B are real but are subsets of the total, and they are the traps that cost marks: over 13.71 crore of those reached are youth and over 10.65 crore are women. Option C is invented. A candidate should therefore read whether the question asks for the total, the youth figure or the women's figure. One more number belongs in the same group and is asked just as often: more than 1.64 lakh Nasha Mukti Mitras have joined the campaign to strengthen community participation, and a citizen may register as one through the Department's official website. Keep the de-addiction helpline number 14446 with these figures as well.

Q3.Government SchemesHard

The anti-drug strategy of the Ministry rests on the findings of the first National Survey on Substance Use, which was conducted by which body?

  1. A.National Crime Records Bureau
  2. B.National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi
  3. C.Narcotics Control Bureau
  4. D.Indian Council of Medical Research
Show answer

Correct answer: B. National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi

Explanation

The correct answer is the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi. The release explains that the Ministry runs a comprehensive and evidence-based strategy under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, and that the strategy is based on the findings of the first National Survey on the Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India, carried out by that centre. Options A and C name agencies associated with crime statistics and with narcotics enforcement, which sound plausible in a drug-related question but belong to a different ministry and a different function. Option D is a well-known medical research body that the release does not mention here. Under the plan the Ministry gives financial assistance to State Governments, Union Territories, non-government organisations and government hospitals for preventive education, awareness generation, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation.
