Why in News

On 4 September 2026 the Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare reported that Special Campaign 3 had redressed 2,306 long-pending pension grievances, a redressal rate of 72 per cent.

The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) closed Special Campaign 3 with 2,306 long-pending pension grievances settled. The department works under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. The results were announced on 4 September 2026.

The dates and the design

Annual special campaigns of this kind have been organised since 2024. This was the third edition. Special Campaign 3 began on 7 July 2026 and concluded on 31 August 2026. It had two parts: a preparatory phase and an execution phase.

What each phase did

In the preparatory phase every ministry, department and their attached or subordinate offices had to identify long-pending grievances, claims and issues, received both online and in physical form. Ministries and departments identified 1,062 target cases in this phase. A further 2,131 grievance cases that had been pending on the CPENGRAMS portal for more than one month were also taken up. In the execution phase the department coordinated with the ministries, held two mid-campaign review meetings and sought the pendency status regularly.

The result in numbers

Cases taken up3,193
Cases redressed2,306
Redressal rate72 per cent
Ministries and departments involved40
Campaign period7 July 2026 to 31 August 2026

Active follow-up is being done for the remaining grievances.

The rural finding

The demographic spread of the redressal carries a point worth noting. Most of the resolved cases relate to pensioners and family pensioners living in rural areas. The department reads this as a healthy trend. Grievances now travel from rural areas in online mode, through the CPENGRAMS portal and other portals run by ministries and departments. The department says this is bridging the digital divide.

Some of the cases settled

  • Family pension arrears of Rs 37.40 lakh released to Ms Angoori Devi, spouse of a Defence pensioner, towards the difference between Ordinary Family Pension and Special Family Pension.
  • Rs 30.15 lakh paid to Ms Koranga Lakshmi, spouse of a Defence pensioner, towards family pension arrears.
  • Disability pension arrears of Rs 30 lakh settled in favour of Shri Idan Singh, a Defence pensioner.

Several of the biggest settlements involve defence pensioners and their families, some of them dating back decades.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesMedium

How many long-pending pension grievances were redressed under Special Campaign 3?

  1. A.1,062
  2. B.2,131
  3. C.2,306
  4. D.3,193
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 2,306

Explanation

The correct answer is 2,306. The release states that the coordinated efforts of forty ministries and departments culminated in the successful resolution of this many cases, and that the redressal rate works out to seventy-two per cent. Every wrong option here is a genuine figure from the same release, which is what makes this question a good test of careful reading. Option A is the count of target cases identified by ministries and departments during the preparatory phase. Option B is the count of grievance cases that had been pending on the CPENGRAMS portal for more than one month and were taken up in the same phase. Option D is the total number of cases taken up, and the correct answer is the part of that total which was actually resolved. The cleanest way to hold this is as a fraction with a percentage attached: cases resolved out of cases taken up, giving seventy-two per cent. Active follow-up continues on the rest.

Q2.Government SchemesMedium

Special Campaign 3 for redressal of pension grievances ran between which dates?

  1. A.1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026
  2. B.7 July 2026 to 31 August 2026
  3. C.2 October 2026 to 31 October 2026
  4. D.1 April 2026 to 31 August 2026
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 7 July 2026 to 31 August 2026

Explanation

The correct answer is 7 July 2026 to 31 August 2026. The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare started Special Campaign 3 on the earlier of those dates, for the timely and qualitative redressal of long-pending pension grievances, claims and issues, and the campaign concluded on the later one. It had a preparatory phase, in which pending cases were identified, and an execution phase, in which the department coordinated with ministries and held two mid-campaign review meetings. Option A and option C offer neat round periods of the kind that campaigns often use, which is why they feel plausible to a student recalling only the season. Option D stretches the start back to the beginning of the financial year while keeping the correct end date, and is the trap for anyone who remembers only one of the two dates. Note that annual campaigns of this kind have been organised since 2024, and this was the third edition.

Q3.Government SchemesHard

Which portal is used for redressal of central government pension grievances under Special Campaign 3?

  1. A.CPGRAMS
  2. B.CPENGRAMS
  3. C.Bhavishya
  4. D.Anubhav
Show answer

Correct answer: B. CPENGRAMS

Explanation

The correct answer is CPENGRAMS. The release records that, besides the target cases identified by ministries, grievance cases pending on the CPENGRAMS portal for more than one month were also taken up for redressal during the preparatory phase. It further notes that most resolved cases pertain to pensioners and family pensioners living in rural areas, and that the arrival of grievances from rural areas in online mode through CPENGRAMS and other ministry portals is bridging the digital divide. Option A, CPGRAMS, is the strongest distractor of the four, because the two names differ by only three letters and CPGRAMS is the wider public grievance portal, while the one named here is the pension-specific system. Option C, Bhavishya, and option D, Anubhav, are genuine initiatives connected with pensioners, which is exactly why they are placed here, but neither is the portal named in this release. Read such acronyms letter by letter before answering.
