GI-AI4FS Second Meeting Held at IMC 2026 in New Delhi

Why in News

On 10 October 2026 the Telecommunication Engineering Centre and ICAR hosted the second meeting of the United Nations Global Initiative on AI for Agri-Food Systems in New Delhi, held alongside India Mobile Congress 2026.

The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), a body under the Department of Telecommunications in the Ministry of Communications, hosted the second meeting of the United Nations Global Initiative on AI for Agri-Food Systems (GI-AI4FS) in New Delhi. The sitting ran alongside India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 and was organised jointly with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Who runs the initiative

GI-AI4FS is a global initiative of the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) acts as its coordinator. Three other UN bodies work on it closely with the ITU: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP). About 70 delegates came to the New Delhi meeting in person and another 25 joined online. They were drawn from international organisations, government departments, farm research institutes, universities, industry and standards development bodies.

Who spoke

The inaugural session opened with remarks by Dr. Sebastian Bosse, Chair of GI-AI4FS. Keynote speakers who followed were Mr. Krishnan Pallassana, Senior Specialist for Strategy, Innovation and Partnerships at the FAO; Dr. Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director of the ITU's Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB); Dr. A. K. Nayak, Deputy Director General for Natural Resource Management at ICAR; and Mr. Syed Tausif Abbas, Senior Deputy Director General and Head of TEC.

What the meeting took up

Speakers set out the widening place of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and digital connectivity in farming. Connected sensors, weather stations, drones, satellite-based systems and AI analytics were described as tools for precision agriculture, better use of scarce inputs, early detection of crop disease and sounder decisions by farmers. Digital methods were also tied to traceability, smaller losses after harvest and leaner farm supply chains. The agenda covered the initiative's own machinery too: a proposed governance and coordination structure, the naming and confirmation of Working Group Chairs, Co-Chairs and members, the terms of reference of those groups, and the first priority areas and work streams.

Hackathon before the meeting

A two-day international hackathon on AI for agri-food systems was held on 8-9 October 2026 at the ICAR campus in New Delhi, again hosted by TEC and ICAR together. Students, researchers, developers and innovators built working answers to real problems in farming and food. Shortlisted teams showed their solutions at the GI-AI4FS meeting, and an award ceremony recognised the winning entries along with partners and mentors.

Exam Point of View

Remember that GI-AI4FS is a UN initiative coordinated by the ITU with the FAO, IFAD and WFP; that its second meeting was hosted in New Delhi by TEC of the Department of Telecommunications with ICAR alongside India Mobile Congress 2026; that Dr. Sebastian Bosse chairs it; and that the hackathon on AI for agri-food systems was held on 8-9 October 2026 at the ICAR campus.

Practice Questions

Q1.Summits & ConferencesEasy

Which United Nations agency coordinates the Global Initiative on AI for Agri-Food Systems (GI-AI4FS)?

  1. A.Food and Agriculture Organization
  2. B.International Telecommunication Union
  3. C.World Food Programme
  4. D.International Fund for Agricultural Development
Show answer
Correct answer: B. International Telecommunication Union

Explanation

The correct answer is the International Telecommunication Union. GI-AI4FS is a global initiative of the United Nations and the ITU is named as the body that coordinates it, working in close collaboration with three partner agencies. The Food and Agriculture Organization in option A is one of those partners and sent a keynote speaker to the New Delhi meeting, but it does not coordinate the initiative. The World Food Programme in option C is likewise a collaborating agency rather than the coordinator. The International Fund for Agricultural Development in option D is the third partner agency in the same group, so it too is wrong. The ITU is the telecommunications and standards arm of the United Nations, which is why it leads an initiative built around the Internet of Things, digital connectivity and artificial intelligence standards for farming and food systems.

Q2.Summits & ConferencesMedium

The second GI-AI4FS meeting in New Delhi was hosted by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre jointly with which Indian body?

  1. A.Indian Council of Agricultural Research
  2. B.Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
  3. C.NITI Aayog
  4. D.National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Indian Council of Agricultural Research

Explanation

The correct answer is the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The Telecommunication Engineering Centre, which works under the Department of Telecommunications in the Ministry of Communications, hosted the meeting jointly with ICAR of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. ICAR also co-hosted the international hackathon held just before the meeting at its own campus in New Delhi, and its Deputy Director General for Natural Resource Management was among the keynote speakers. Option B, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, is the sector regulator and had no role described here. Option C, NITI Aayog, is the government's policy think tank and was not a host. Option D, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, is a development finance institution for rural credit and was not involved in hosting this meeting either.

Q3.Summits & ConferencesMedium

Who is the Chair of the Global Initiative on AI for Agri-Food Systems?

  1. A.Dr. Bilel Jamoussi
  2. B.Dr. A. K. Nayak
  3. C.Dr. Sebastian Bosse
  4. D.Mr. Krishnan Pallassana
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Dr. Sebastian Bosse

Explanation

The correct answer is Dr. Sebastian Bosse, who opened the inaugural session of the second meeting in his capacity as Chair of GI-AI4FS. Option A, Dr. Bilel Jamoussi, is the Deputy Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of the ITU and delivered a keynote address, but he does not chair the initiative. Option B, Dr. A. K. Nayak, is Deputy Director General for Natural Resource Management at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and also spoke as a keynote speaker. Option D, Mr. Krishnan Pallassana, is a Senior Specialist for Strategy, Innovation and Partnerships at the Food and Agriculture Organization and was another keynote speaker. All three took part in the inaugural session, yet the chairmanship of GI-AI4FS rests with Dr. Bosse, who gave the opening remarks.
