Vice-President Addresses Second Convocation of AIIMS Deoghar
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the second convocation of AIIMS Deoghar in Jharkhand, where women made up 132 of the 173 graduating students.

Why in News
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the second convocation of AIIMS Deoghar in Jharkhand, noting that women accounted for 132 of the 173 graduating students and that medical colleges in the country had grown from 387 before 2014 to 846.
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the second convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Deoghar, in Jharkhand, and congratulated the doctors, nurses and other health professionals who received their degrees. He called the ceremony a celebration of what the Santhal Pargana region has been hoping for, and said the institute stands for the widening of medical education and health care among tribal and rural communities.
Women outnumbered men among the graduates
The Vice-President drew attention with satisfaction to the make-up of the graduating batch: of the 173 students who passed out, 132 were women. This, he said, shows the country moving from the empowerment of women towards development led by women, and shows what education can do in helping women reach their full capacity. He also praised the nursing profession for the part it plays in patient care.
Growth of medical education
Speaking of how medical education and health infrastructure have expanded, the Vice-President said the country had 387 medical colleges before 2014 and now has 846. Institutions such as AIIMS Deoghar, he argued, are evidence of development that is both balanced and inclusive. Reaching quality health care and higher education into every state, district and village is, in his words, necessary if the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 is to be met.
Service beyond the campus
Recalling Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanhu and Tilka Manjhi, the Vice-President urged the graduates to take their training out beyond the walls of the institute and into villages, tribal areas and the most distant parts of the country. A medical degree, he said, is not only an achievement but a duty to serve those who are underserved and vulnerable, and he asked the young professionals to hold to competence, integrity, empathy and ethical conduct. He commended the institute's outreach work, which covers malaria elimination, surveillance for lymphatic filariasis, anaemia, hearing health and school health, and said the duty of a medical institution reaches well past its campus. He asked the graduates to use artificial intelligence, telemedicine and digital diagnostics responsibly so that their benefits reach remote areas as much as cities, and to carry a "No to Drugs" message among young people.
Who attended
The convocation was attended by the Governor of Jharkhand, Santosh Kumar Gangwar; the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav; the Jharkhand Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Dr. Irfan Ansari; the Lok Sabha member Dr. Nishikant Dubey; the Rajya Sabha member Pradip Kumar Varma; the Deoghar MLA, Suresh Paswan; the President of AIIMS Deoghar, Professor M. V. Padma Srivastava; and its Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Nitin M. Gangane.

Practice Questions
AIIMS Deoghar, whose second convocation was addressed by the Vice-President, is located in which state?
- A.Bihar
- B.Jharkhand
- C.Odisha
- D.West Bengal
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Jharkhand. Deoghar lies in the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand, and the Vice-President described the convocation as a celebration of that region's aspirations, speaking of what the institute means for tribal and rural communities around it. Option A, Bihar, is wrong, though it is an understandable error: Deoghar was part of undivided Bihar before Jharkhand was carved out, and the two states share the Santhal Pargana cultural region along their border. Option C, Odisha, is wrong; Odisha has its own All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Bhubaneswar. Option D, West Bengal, is wrong as well; its institute of this family is at Kalyani. A further confirmation inside the event itself is the list of those present, which included the Governor of Jharkhand, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, and the state's Minister for Health and Medical Education, Dr. Irfan Ansari.
Of the students who graduated at the second convocation of AIIMS Deoghar, how many were women?
- A.87 of 173
- B.132 of 173
- C.132 of 240
- D.96 of 150
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 132 of 173. The Vice-President pointed to this with satisfaction, saying that it showed the country moving from the empowerment of women towards development led by women, and that it showed how education allows women to realise their potential. Option A keeps the right total but halves the number of women, which would make the batch almost evenly divided and would remove the very point the Vice-President was making. Option C keeps the right number of women but inflates the size of the batch, which would reduce their share to little more than half. Option D changes both figures and matches nothing at the ceremony. In examinations a pair of figures like this is usually tested as a ratio, so it helps to hold the fact in the form of a sentence: women were a clear majority, 132 out of a batch of 173 doctors, nurses and health professionals.
According to the Vice-President, the number of medical colleges in India has grown from 387 before 2014 to what figure?
- A.648
- B.706
- C.846
- D.912
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 846. Speaking about the expansion of medical education and health infrastructure, the Vice-President said the country had 387 medical colleges before 2014 and now has 846, and he presented institutions such as AIIMS Deoghar as proof of development that is balanced and inclusive. Options A, B and D — 648, 706 and 912 — are all plausible-looking figures of the same order but none of them is the one cited. The safest way to remember the fact is as a pair with its base year: 387 before 2014, and 846 now. Candidates should also link the figure to the wider claim the Vice-President made with it, namely that quality health care and higher education must reach every state, district and village if the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 is to be achieved.
Which tribal icons did the Vice-President recall while urging the AIIMS Deoghar graduates to serve remote and tribal areas?
- A.Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanhu and Tilka Manjhi
- B.Rani Gaidinliu, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem
- C.Tantia Bhil, Govind Guru and Budhu Bhagat
- D.Shahid Veer Narayan Singh, Jatra Bhagat and Telanga Khadia
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is option A. The Vice-President recalled the legacy of Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanhu and Tilka Manjhi, all of them figures of tribal resistance closely associated with the region around Deoghar, and used their memory to ask the graduates to carry their knowledge into villages, tribal communities and the remotest parts of the country. Option B names Rani Gaidinliu of the north-east along with Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, who are remembered chiefly in the Telugu-speaking regions, so the grouping does not fit this ceremony. Option C names tribal leaders connected with central and western India, and although Budhu Bhagat belongs to the Chhotanagpur area the set as a whole was not the one cited. Option D lists further tribal leaders of the eastern belt who were likewise not named in the address. The Santhal Pargana link is the clue: Sidho and Kanhu led the Santhal uprising and Tilka Manjhi is remembered in the same region.
