Lighthouse Tourism Grows to 18.63 Lakh Visitors in 2024-25

Why in News

A background paper issued on 10 October 2026 set out how India is developing its 205 lighthouses as tourism and museum destinations, with visitors reaching 18.63 lakh in 2024-25 against about 4 lakh in 2014.

India guards a coastline that runs beyond 11,000 km, and 205 lighthouses stand along it. A background paper put out on 10 October 2026 sets out how these towers, long seen only from a distance by sailors, are being turned into places the public can walk into, while their first duty of guiding vessels safely stays untouched.

Visitors and tourism sites

Footfall at lighthouse stations stood at roughly 4 lakh in 2014. By 2024-25 it had climbed to 18.63 lakh. Seventy-five lighthouses have been fitted out as tourism destinations so that their architecture and history survive, among them Mandvi and Dwarka in Gujarat, Tadri in Karnataka, Pamban in Tamil Nadu and Vizhinjam in Kerala. Tickets are now sold through one digital portal run by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL). A further 25 towers have been proposed for the same treatment, and the traffic has put money into nearby hotels, eateries, transport operators and craft shops.

What powers the beam now

Every lighthouse in the country draws its power from the sun. The station on Samiyani Island in Gujarat moved from an oil lamp to a solar electronic flasher and then to an LED lantern in 2016; at Jodiya a solar flashing light was replaced by a high-intensity LED lantern in 2021. Coastal lighthouses also carry 87 Automatic Identification System (AIS) shore stations. AIS is a ship-and-shore data broadcast arrangement required under SOLAS, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, and it sharpens awareness of what is moving at sea.

Lighthouse museums

Museums devoted to lighthouses now work at Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Alappuzha, Kannur, Muttom, Dwarka and Gopnath. Mahabalipuram, which the Pallavas built up as a trading port in the seventh century AD, received its first conventional lighthouse in 1887, placed on the roof of the Olakkaneeswar Temple with a wick lamp inside a fourth-order optic. The lights were changed in 2004 to a cluster of three 150 W, 230 V metal halide lamps, and in 2020 the main light became a 236-watt LED array, the first of its kind. The tower itself is a circular stone-masonry structure 26 metres tall.

Lothal and Visakhapatnam

At Lothal in Gujarat, the National Maritime Heritage Complex will carry a 77-metre Lighthouse Museum costed at ₹266.11 crore and planned as the tallest such museum anywhere. The complex is to include a 5D dome theatre, a Coastal States Pavilion, a Museotel, an eco resort and a Maritime Research Institute raised with the Indian Maritime University; the museum borrows its look from the Mahabalipuram tower. On the eastern seaboard, 3,156 square metres have been earmarked at the old lighthouse area of Visakhapatnam for a new museum.

Festival, and lights on a river

The Indian Lighthouse Festival opened at Fort Aguada in Goa in 2023, shifted to Puri in Odisha in 2024 and was held at Visakhapatnam in 2026. The Puri edition drew attention to five tourism-ready lighthouses of Odisha: Gopalpur, Puri, Chandrabhaga, Paradip and False Point. Four new lighthouses are being raised along the Brahmaputra at Pandu, Bogibeel, Silghat and Biswanath Ghat, the country s first on an inland waterway, each 20 metres high, at a combined outlay of about ₹84 crore, with solar power, weather sensors, a museum, an amphitheatre, a cafeteria, a play area and a souvenir shop at every site.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalEasy

How many lighthouses stand along India’s coastline?

  1. A.155
  2. B.205
  3. C.255
  4. D.305
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 205

Explanation

The correct answer is 205. India maintains 205 lighthouses along a coastline that stretches beyond 11,000 km, and these towers are looked after by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Their first duty remains the safe passage of vessels, and every one of them now runs on solar power. Option A, 155, is lower than the real count and does not match the figure placed on record. Option C, 255, and option D, 305, are both higher than the actual number and would wrongly suggest a far larger network than the one India operates. Candidates should pair this count with two other numbers from the same account: 75 lighthouses have already been developed as tourism destinations and 25 more have been proposed for such development, so the tourism network is a subset of the 205 and not a separate set of towers.

Q2.NationalMedium

Where is the 77-metre Lighthouse Museum, planned as the tallest of its kind in the world, coming up?

  1. A.Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
  2. B.Lothal, Gujarat
  3. C.Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
  4. D.Fort Aguada, Goa
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Lothal, Gujarat

Explanation

The correct answer is Lothal, Gujarat. The Lighthouse Museum of 77 metres forms part of the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, an archaeological site tied to ancient seaborne trade, and it is estimated at ₹266.11 crore. The complex will also hold a 5D dome theatre, a Coastal States Pavilion, a Museotel, an eco resort and a Maritime Research Institute developed with the Indian Maritime University. Option A is wrong, though it is the closest distractor: Mahabalipuram supplies the design inspiration for the Lothal museum and has its own lighthouse museum, but the 77-metre tower is not there. Option C is wrong because Visakhapatnam is getting a separate new lighthouse museum, with 3,156 square metres of land earmarked at its old lighthouse area. Option D is wrong because Fort Aguada in Goa is known for the light-and-sound projection show and for hosting the first Indian Lighthouse Festival in 2023.

Q3.NationalMedium

Along which river is India setting up its first lighthouses on an inland waterway?

  1. A.Ganga
  2. B.Godavari
  3. C.Brahmaputra
  4. D.Mahanadi
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Brahmaputra

Explanation

The correct answer is the Brahmaputra. Four lighthouses are being established along this river at Pandu, Bogibeel, Silghat and Biswanath Ghat, and together they will be the first lighthouse infrastructure India places on an inland waterway rather than on the sea coast. Each tower will rise to 20 metres, the combined outlay is about ₹84 crore, and each will carry solar power along with weather-observation sensors. Every one of the four sites is also designed for visitors, with a museum, an amphitheatre, a cafeteria, a children’s play area, a souvenir shop and landscaped public space. Options A, B and D name the Ganga, the Godavari and the Mahanadi, all important Indian rivers, but no lighthouse project of this kind has been announced on them in this account. Remembering the four place names on the Brahmaputra is the safest way to answer a question set from this item.

Q4.NationalMedium

Which city hosted the third edition of the Indian Lighthouse Festival?

  1. A.Puri
  2. B.Panaji
  3. C.Kochi
  4. D.Visakhapatnam
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Visakhapatnam

Explanation

The correct answer is Visakhapatnam. The Indian Lighthouse Festival has moved along the coast in three editions: the first was held at Fort Aguada in Goa in 2023, the second at Puri in Odisha in 2024, and the third at Visakhapatnam in 2026. At Visakhapatnam the lighthouse became the centre of a wider celebration of coastal identity, with local crafts, coastal food and night-time illumination drawing families, students, artists and entrepreneurs. Option A, Puri, hosted the second edition, where lighthouse heritage was combined with sand art, boat art, yoga and folk performances, and where five tourism-developed lighthouses of Odisha were showcased: Gopalpur, Puri, Chandrabhaga, Paradip and False Point. Option B is wrong because the Goa edition was held at Fort Aguada, not at Panaji. Option C, Kochi, has not hosted the festival in any of the three editions on record.
