RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Q461.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · 25 May 2019, Shift 2Medium

Which of the following attractive forces exists between different layers of graphite?

  1. A.Vander Waals forces
  2. B.Columbic forces
  3. C.Gravitational forces
  4. D.Electromagnetic forces
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Vander Waals forces

Graphite is built of flat sheets of carbon atoms arranged in hexagons, and while the atoms inside a sheet are joined by strong covalent bonds, the sheets themselves are held to one another only by weak van der Waals forces.

In an E-R diagram, multivalued attributes are represented by-

  1. A.Rectangle
  2. B.Dashed ellipse
  3. C.Double ellipse
  4. D.Diamond
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Double ellipse

In an entity relationship diagram each symbol has a fixed meaning, and an attribute that can hold more than one value for the same entity, such as a person's several phone numbers, is drawn as a double ellipse.

Q463.Environment & EcologyAsked in: RRB JE · 22 May 2019, Shift 1Easy

The underground water due to the hot rocks present inside the Earth ____________which can turn the turbines of generators to produce electricity.

  1. A.Turns to ice
  2. B.Turns to steam at high pressure
  3. C.Cools down
  4. D.Flows out
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Turns to steam at high pressure

This describes geothermal energy. Molten rock pushed up from deep inside the Earth collects as hot spots at shallower depths, and groundwater trapped near them is heated until it becomes steam under high pressure.

Q464.Computer AwarenessAsked in: RRB JE · 01 Sep 2019, Shift 2Easy

A computer modem's rating of 56 K refers to its-

  1. A.Modem size
  2. B.Memory size
  3. C.Transmission capacity
  4. D.Transmission speed
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Transmission speed

The 56 K rating of a modem means it can transfer data at up to 56 kilobits per second, so the figure describes speed, not size.

Q467.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · 25 May 2019, Shift 1Easy

Bacilli are bacteria which are-

  1. A.Comma-shaped
  2. B.Rod-shaped
  3. C.Spiral
  4. D.Spherical
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Rod-shaped

Bacteria are grouped by shape, and bacilli are the rod-shaped ones; the Latin word bacillus itself means a small rod or stick.

Q468.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · 28 May 2019, Shift 1Easy

What is the thrust on unit area called?

  1. A.Volume
  2. B.Surface area
  3. C.Density
  4. D.Pressure
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Pressure

Thrust is the force acting perpendicular to a surface, and the thrust acting on unit area of that surface is called pressure, so pressure = thrust ÷ area.

Q469.Computer AwarenessAsked in: RRB JE · 30 Aug 2019Easy

1 gigabyte is equal to-

  1. A.1391 megabytes
  2. B.1024 kilobytes
  3. C.1024 megabytes
  4. D.1150 megabytes
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 1024 megabytes

Computer storage is counted in powers of two, so each step up the ladder multiplies by 1024, and one gigabyte equals 1024 megabytes.

Between which two cities does India's first semi high-speed train 'Vande Bharat Express' run?

  1. A.Puri and Howrah Junction
  2. B.Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central
  3. C.New Delhi and Varanasi Junction
  4. D.Hazrat Nizamuddin and Jhansi Junction
Show answer
Correct answer: C. New Delhi and Varanasi Junction

The first Vande Bharat Express was flagged off on 15 February 2019 on the New Delhi to Varanasi route. It was built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and was known as Train 18 while under development.

Permanent magnet type instrument may be used for -

  1. A.A.C. only
  2. B.D.C. only
  3. C.Impulse quantities
  4. D.A.C. and D.C. both
Show answer
Correct answer: B. D.C. only

only. In a permanent magnet moving coil instrument the coil is pivoted in the field of a permanent magnet, so the deflecting torque is proportional to the current itself and not to its square.

For a floating body to be in stable equilibrium, its metacenter should be-

  1. A.Below the center of gravity
  2. B.Below the center of buoyancy
  3. C.Above the center of buoyancy
  4. D.Above the center of gravity
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Above the center of gravity

When a floating body tilts a little, the centre of buoyancy shifts to the centre of the newly displaced water, and the vertical drawn through it cuts the original axis of the body at a point called the metacentre.

Work done by conservative force is equal to

  1. A.Decrease in potential energy
  2. B.Increase in kinetic energy
  3. C.Increase in potential energy
  4. D.Decrease in kinetic energy
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Decrease in potential energy

A conservative force is one whose work depends only on the starting and the finishing point, not on the path taken, and whose work around any closed path is zero.

Q478.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 09 Dec, 2025, Shift 1Easy

Which of the following shows the strongest force of attraction between particles?

  1. A.Water
  2. B.Iron rod
  3. C.Alcohol
  4. D.Oxygen gas
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Iron rod

An iron rod is a solid, and the force of attraction between particles is strongest in the solid state. In a solid the particles sit close together in fixed positions and can only vibrate, so a solid keeps its shape, has a definite volume and can hardly be compressed.

Q480.General ScienceAsked in: RRB Group D · 16 Dec, 2025, Shift 3Medium

Which of the following activities best demonstrates that there is a force of attraction between particles of matter?

  1. A.Compressing a sponge
  2. B.Dissolving sugar in water
  3. C.Breaking a chalk stick
  4. D.Heating ice to form water
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Breaking a chalk stick

Force has to be applied to break the chalk because its particles hold one another together, and that pull is the force of attraction between particles.
