Days for Women, Children and Human Rights: GK Notes — GK24 title card

Every General Awareness paper carries one or two questions on important days, and the cluster around women, children and human rights is the densest part of that list. The dates below are fixed by a United Nations resolution or by a Government of India decision, so they do not change from year to year; only the annual theme changes, and themes are not worth memorising. What is worth memorising is the date, the body that declared it, and the event behind it.

Days for women

International Women's Day falls on 8 March. It grew out of the labour movements of the early twentieth century, was observed by the United Nations during International Women's Year in 1975, and was adopted as a United Nations observance soon after. In India, National Women's Day is observed on 13 February, the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu. Two dates deal with violence: the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, which opens the sixteen days of activism that end on Human Rights Day, and the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on 6 February. International Widows Day is 23 June and the International Day of Rural Women is 15 October. India observes National Safe Motherhood Day on 11 April, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi.

Days for children

Three dates are confused with one another more often than any others in this chapter. Children's Day in India is 14 November, the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru. World Children's Day, earlier called Universal Children's Day, is 20 November, the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. International Children's Day is observed on 1 June in many countries. To these add the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June, begun by the International Labour Organization in 2002, the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression on 4 June, National Girl Child Day in India on 24 January, and the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October, which the United Nations has observed since 2012.

Days for human rights and dignity

Human Rights Day is 10 December, the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris in 1948. India's own framework rests on the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, under which the National Human Rights Commission was set up, and the commission marks its foundation day on 12 October. Minority Rights Day in India is 18 December, the same date as International Migrants Day. The other dates in this group are the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March, which recalls the Sharpeville shootings of 1960, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June, the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2 December and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December.

The pairs that are set as traps

  • 14 November and 20 November: the Indian Children's Day against the world observance.
  • 24 January and 11 October: the Indian National Girl Child Day against the international Day of the Girl Child.
  • 8 March and 13 February: the international day against the Indian National Women's Day.
  • 10 December and 12 October: Human Rights Day against the foundation day of India's National Human Rights Commission.
  • 18 December carries two observances, Minority Rights Day in India and International Migrants Day.
  • 24 January also carries the International Day of Education, declared by the United Nations in 2018 for observance from 2019.

How the questions are framed

Three forms recur. The first gives the date and asks for the day, the second gives the day and asks for the date, and the third gives a person and asks which day falls on their birth anniversary, as with Nehru on 14 November, Sarojini Naidu on 13 February and Kasturba Gandhi on 11 April. A fourth form, common in Railway papers, asks which body declared a day, and the answer is almost always the United Nations General Assembly, except for the World Day Against Child Labour, which belongs to the International Labour Organization.

Exam Point of View

Questions come as a date to be matched with a day, a day to be matched with a date, or a person whose birth anniversary the day marks. The high-yield answers are 8 March, 14 November, 20 November, 24 January, 11 October, 12 June, 25 November and 10 December. Four traps repeat. The first is the Indian day against the world day, as with 14 November and 20 November, or 24 January and 11 October. The second is the declaring body, where the answer is the United Nations General Assembly in almost every case except the World Day Against Child Labour, which belongs to the International Labour Organization. The third is the shared date, since 18 December carries both Minority Rights Day and International Migrants Day, and 24 January carries both National Girl Child Day and the International Day of Education. The fourth asks why 25 November and 10 December are linked, and the answer is the sixteen days of activism. Learn the date with the event behind it, never the annual theme.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Important Days & DatesEasy

Human Rights Day is observed every year on which date?

  1. A.2 December
  2. B.10 December
  3. C.18 December
  4. D.24 October
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 10 December

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 10 December. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris on 10 December 1948, and the day has been observed on that anniversary ever since. Option A is wrong because 2 December is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, which recalls the convention against the traffic in persons adopted in 1949. Option C is wrong because 18 December carries two other observances, Minority Rights Day in India and International Migrants Day. Option D is wrong because 24 October is United Nations Day, the anniversary of the Charter coming into force in 1945. Note also that the sixteen days of activism against gender-based violence run from 25 November to Human Rights Day, which is why the two dates are often set together in a single question.

Q2.Important Days & DatesEasy

Children's Day in India is celebrated on 14 November to mark the birth anniversary of:

  1. A.Mahatma Gandhi
  2. B.Jawaharlal Nehru
  3. C.Dr Rajendra Prasad
  4. D.Dr B. R. Ambedkar
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Jawaharlal Nehru

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Jawaharlal Nehru. Children's Day in India falls on 14 November, the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who was fond of children and was called Chacha Nehru. Option A is wrong because Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October, which is observed as Gandhi Jayanti and also as the International Day of Non-Violence declared by the United Nations. Option C is wrong because Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, was born on 3 December, a date that now carries the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Option D is wrong because Dr B. R. Ambedkar was born on 14 April, observed as Ambedkar Jayanti. Candidates should also keep 14 November apart from 20 November, which is World Children's Day, the United Nations observance.

Q3.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Children's Day, observed by the United Nations, falls on which date?

  1. A.1 June
  2. B.14 November
  3. C.20 November
  4. D.12 June
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 20 November

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 20 November. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on 20 November 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the same date in 1989, so World Children's Day, earlier called Universal Children's Day, is observed on 20 November. Option A is wrong because 1 June is International Children's Day, widely observed in many countries but not the United Nations date. Option B is wrong because 14 November is Children's Day in India alone, tied to Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary. Option D is wrong because 12 June is the World Day Against Child Labour, begun by the International Labour Organization in 2002. India ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992, a fact that often appears alongside this date.

Q4.Important Days & DatesMedium

National Girl Child Day is observed in India on which date?

  1. A.24 January
  2. B.11 October
  3. C.8 March
  4. D.13 February
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 24 January

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 24 January. National Girl Child Day was instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and is observed on 24 January to draw attention to the sex ratio, to girls' education and to schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, which was launched at Panipat on 22 January 2015. Option B is wrong because 11 October is the International Day of the Girl Child, a United Nations observance held since 2012; the Indian and international days are the pair most often swapped in this chapter. Option C is wrong because 8 March is International Women's Day. Option D is wrong because 13 February is National Women's Day in India, observed on the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu. Note that 24 January also carries the International Day of Education.

Q5.Important Days & DatesMedium

The International Day of the Girl Child, declared by the United Nations, is observed on:

  1. A.24 January
  2. B.15 October
  3. C.11 October
  4. D.20 November
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 11 October

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 11 October. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2011 declaring 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, and the first observance was held in 2012. The day focuses on child marriage, education for girls and their health and safety. Option A is wrong because 24 January is National Girl Child Day in India, a national and not an international observance. Option B is wrong because 15 October is the International Day of Rural Women, which is also sometimes confused with this date because the two fall in the same month. Option D is wrong because 20 November is World Children's Day, which covers all children and is tied to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Keeping the national and international girl child days apart is the main requirement here.

Q6.Important Days & DatesMedium

The World Day Against Child Labour, observed on 12 June, was begun by which organisation?

  1. A.UNICEF
  2. B.International Labour Organization
  3. C.UNESCO
  4. D.World Health Organization
Show answer

Correct answer: B. International Labour Organization

Explanation

The correct answer is B, International Labour Organization. The International Labour Organization launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 and fixed it on 12 June to focus attention on the extent of child labour and on the action needed to end it. The ILO, founded in 1919 and with its headquarters at Geneva, is the United Nations agency for labour standards. Option A is wrong because UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, works on children's welfare but is linked with World Children's Day on 20 November rather than with this observance. Option C is wrong because UNESCO deals with education, science and culture and is associated with World Heritage Day and International Literacy Day on 8 September. Option D is wrong because the World Health Organization is tied to World Health Day on 7 April, the anniversary of its founding in 1948.

Q7.Important Days & DatesEasy

International Women's Day is observed every year on:

  1. A.8 March
  2. B.13 February
  3. C.21 March
  4. D.15 October
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 8 March

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 8 March. International Women's Day grew out of the women's labour movements of the early twentieth century, was observed by the United Nations during International Women's Year in 1975 and became a regular United Nations observance soon afterwards. Option B is wrong because 13 February is National Women's Day in India, kept on the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, the first Indian woman to preside over a Congress session. Option C is wrong because 21 March is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which recalls the Sharpeville shootings in South Africa in 1960; the same date also carries World Forest Day and World Poetry Day. Option D is wrong because 15 October is the International Day of Rural Women, a narrower observance within the same family of days.

Q8.Important Days & DatesHard

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed on:

  1. A.6 February
  2. B.23 June
  3. C.25 November
  4. D.3 December
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 25 November

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 25 November. The United Nations observes 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the day opens the sixteen days of activism against gender-based violence that close on Human Rights Day, 10 December. Option A is wrong because 6 February is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, a separate observance in the same family. Option B is wrong because 23 June is International Widows Day, which draws attention to the position of widows in law and in property rights. Option D is wrong because 3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The pairing of 25 November with 10 December is the detail examiners like, because it explains why the two dates are exactly sixteen days apart.

Q9.Important Days & DatesMedium

National Women's Day in India, observed on 13 February, marks the birth anniversary of:

  1. A.Sarojini Naidu
  2. B.Kasturba Gandhi
  3. C.Savitribai Phule
  4. D.Annie Besant
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Sarojini Naidu

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Sarojini Naidu. National Women's Day in India is kept on 13 February, the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, the poet called the Nightingale of India, who presided over the Kanpur session of the Congress in 1925 as its first Indian woman president and later became Governor of the United Provinces. Option B is wrong because Kasturba Gandhi's birth anniversary, 11 April, is observed as National Safe Motherhood Day. Option C is wrong because Savitribai Phule, the pioneer of women's education who taught at the first girls' school in Pune, was born on 3 January, which several states observe separately. Option D is wrong because Annie Besant, the first woman president of the Congress, in 1917, was born on 1 October and has no national day of this kind in her name.

Q10.Important Days & DatesEasy

In which year did the United Nations General Assembly adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

  1. A.1945
  2. B.1946
  3. C.1948
  4. D.1950
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 1948

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 1948. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at its session in Paris on 10 December 1948, and the anniversary is observed every year as Human Rights Day. The declaration has thirty articles and is not a treaty, so it is not by itself legally binding, but it is the parent document of the later human rights covenants. Option A is wrong because 1945 is the year the United Nations Charter was signed at San Francisco and came into force on 24 October. Option B is wrong because 1946 is the year the Commission on Human Rights began its work on drafting the declaration. Option D is wrong because 1950 is the year the General Assembly invited states to observe Human Rights Day, two years after the declaration itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Children's Day on 14 November and World Children's Day on 20 November?

14 November is Children's Day in India alone, kept on Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary. 20 November is the United Nations observance, chosen because the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted on that date in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

Because the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document of thirty articles, in Paris on 10 December 1948. The General Assembly invited states to observe the day from 1950.

On which date is National Girl Child Day observed in India?

24 January. It was instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and is distinct from the International Day of the Girl Child, which the United Nations observes on 11 October.
