Art, Culture, Literature and Sports Days: Dates and Reasons — GK24 title card

Questions on important days are the cheapest marks in a general awareness paper, because a date either is known or is not and nothing can be worked out on the spot. The days connected with art, culture, literature and sport form one convenient block, and there is a further advantage in learning them: almost every one of these dates was chosen for a reason, usually the birth or death anniversary of a person or the founding day of an organisation, and knowing the reason makes the date impossible to forget.

Dates that are easy to confuse

Three pairs cause most of the errors. The first is 18 April and 18 May: the earlier date is World Heritage Day, for monuments and sites, and the later one is International Museum Day. The second is 21 June, which carries both World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga, so a question giving that date must be read carefully to see which of the two the options are about. The third is 10 January against 14 September: the first is World Hindi Day, observed because the first World Hindi Conference met at Nagpur in 1975, and the second is Hindi Diwas, observed because the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the official language of the Union in 1949.

Indian days in related fields

Several Indian observances belong to the same memory block because each falls on a birth anniversary. Teachers Day is on 5 September, the birthday of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan; National Education Day is on 11 November, the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of India; National Mathematics Day is on 22 December, the birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujan; and National Science Day is on 28 February, the day on which the Raman effect was discovered in 1928. Children Day is on 14 November, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, and National Youth Day on 12 January, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda.

Exam Point of View

Questions come in three forms. The first simply asks for the date of a named day, and here the art and culture cluster of 27 March, 18 April, 23 April, 29 April and 18 May is the most frequently set. The second gives a date and asks which day it is, which is where the double dates matter: 21 June is both World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga, and 18 April and 18 May are a trap for each other. The third asks why a date was chosen, so keep the reasons ready: Dhyan Chand for 29 August, the founding of the International Olympic Committee for 23 June, the founding of FIDE for 20 July, the death of Cervantes for 23 April and the adoption of Hindi by the Constituent Assembly for 14 September. The commonest single error is to swap Hindi Diwas on 14 September with World Hindi Day on 10 January.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Important Days & DatesEasy

World Book and Copyright Day is observed on which date?

  1. A.23 April
  2. B.18 April
  3. C.21 March
  4. D.8 September
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 23 April

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 23 April. UNESCO fixed this date because it carries unusual literary weight: Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, died on 23 April 1616, and the same date is traditionally given for the death of William Shakespeare. The day is used to promote reading and publishing and to draw attention to the protection of copyright. Option B, 18 April, is World Heritage Day, formally the International Day for Monuments and Sites, and the closeness of the two April dates is exactly what makes this question worth setting. Option C, 21 March, is World Poetry Day, adopted by UNESCO in 1999, which belongs to the same literary family but is a distinct observance. Option D, 8 September, is International Literacy Day, observed since 1967 to press for universal reading and writing, and although it concerns books and learning it is a separate day with a separate purpose.

Q2.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Theatre Day is celebrated on

  1. A.29 April
  2. B.27 March
  3. C.18 May
  4. D.21 November
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 27 March

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 27 March. World Theatre Day was instituted in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, and every year a figure from world theatre delivers an international message that is read out in theatres across many countries. Option A, 29 April, is International Dance Day, also declared by the International Theatre Institute, chosen because it is the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre, the French dancer who reformed ballet; theatre and dance days thus come from the same body but fall on different dates. Option C, 18 May, is International Museum Day, declared by the International Council of Museums. Option D, 21 November, is World Television Day, declared by the United Nations after the first World Television Forum of 1996. The performing-arts cluster worth fixing is 27 March for theatre, 29 April for dance and 30 April for jazz.

Q3.Important Days & DatesHard

International Dance Day is observed on 29 April because it is the birth anniversary of

  1. A.Jean-Georges Noverre
  2. B.Leonardo da Vinci
  3. C.Pierre de Coubertin
  4. D.Rukmini Devi Arundale
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Jean-Georges Noverre

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Jean-Georges Noverre. Noverre was the French dancer and choreographer who argued that ballet should tell a story through expressive movement rather than remain a display of steps, and the International Theatre Institute chose his birthday, 29 April, for International Dance Day. Option B, Leonardo da Vinci, has his birthday on 15 April, which is World Art Day, so the person is real and the day is the wrong one. Option C, Pierre de Coubertin, founded the modern Olympic movement, and the date linked to him is 23 June, the day the International Olympic Committee was established in 1894, not a dance anniversary. Option D, Rukmini Devi Arundale, revived Bharatanatyam and founded Kalakshetra, and she is a plausible choice for a dance day but International Dance Day is an international observance tied to Noverre. The rule to carry away is that each of these dates is a birthday or a founding day.

Q4.Important Days & DatesMedium

International Museum Day is observed on

  1. A.18 April
  2. B.18 May
  3. C.21 May
  4. D.27 September
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 18 May

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 18 May. International Museum Day was declared by the International Council of Museums, and on it museums across the world open to the public around a common annual theme meant to show the part museums play in education and in society. Option A, 18 April, is World Heritage Day, formally the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and approved by UNESCO in 1983; because both dates are the eighteenth, this is the pair most often exchanged in question papers, and it is worth remembering that the heritage day comes first in the year. Option C, 21 May, is the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. Option D, 27 September, is World Tourism Day, which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the statutes of the World Tourism Organization in 1970.

Q5.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Heritage Day, also called the International Day for Monuments and Sites, is observed on

  1. A.18 May
  2. B.18 April
  3. C.23 April
  4. D.15 April
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 18 April

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 18 April. The day was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and approved by UNESCO in 1983, and it is used to draw public attention to the conservation of historic buildings, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes, including the sites on the World Heritage List. Option A, 18 May, is International Museum Day, and since both dates are the eighteenth of a month they are the standard trap for each other. Option C, 23 April, is World Book and Copyright Day, which falls in the same month and honours the death of Cervantes. Option D, 15 April, is World Art Day, chosen because it is the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci. April is therefore a crowded month in this topic, carrying the art day on the fifteenth, the heritage day on the eighteenth, the book day on the twenty-third and the dance day on the twenty-ninth, and that sequence is worth learning as a block.

Q6.Important Days & DatesEasy

National Sports Day in India is observed on 29 August to mark the birth anniversary of

  1. A.Milkha Singh
  2. B.Major Dhyan Chand
  3. C.K. D. Jadhav
  4. D.Balbir Singh Senior
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Major Dhyan Chand

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Major Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 and was part of the Indian hockey teams that won the Olympic gold medal in 1928, 1932 and 1936; he is regarded as the finest hockey player the country has produced, and the national sports awards are conferred on his birthday each year. Option A, Milkha Singh, was the sprinter who narrowly missed a medal in the 400 metres at the Rome Olympics of 1960 and won gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games, but no national day is named for him. Option C, K. D. Jadhav, was the wrestler who won bronze at the Helsinki Olympics of 1952, India first individual Olympic medal after independence, which makes him a strong distractor. Option D, Balbir Singh Senior, was another great hockey centre forward with three Olympic golds. Only Dhyan Chand birthday carries the national day.

Q7.Important Days & DatesHard

International Olympic Day is observed on 23 June because on that day in 1894

  1. A.The first modern Olympic Games opened at Athens
  2. B.The International Olympic Committee was founded at Paris
  3. C.The Olympic flag was designed
  4. D.India first took part in the Olympic Games
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The International Olympic Committee was founded at Paris

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the International Olympic Committee was founded at Paris. A congress convened by Pierre de Coubertin at the Sorbonne in Paris established the International Olympic Committee on 23 June 1894, and national Olympic committees mark the anniversary with runs and open sporting events. Option A is wrong on the date, since the first modern Games opened at Athens in 1896, and that event is commemorated separately on 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Option C, the designing of the Olympic flag with its five interlocking rings, came later, in the second decade of the twentieth century, and has no day of its own. Option D is wrong because India first sent a competitor to the Olympic Games well after 1894 and first sent a full team in the nineteen twenties. Keep 23 June for the founding of the committee and 6 April for the first modern Games.

Q8.Important Days & DatesMedium

Hindi Diwas is observed on 14 September every year because on that day in 1949

  1. A.The Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union
  2. B.The first World Hindi Conference was held at Nagpur
  3. C.The Constitution of India came into force
  4. D.The Official Languages Act was passed
Show answer

Correct answer: A. The Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union. That decision, taken on 14 September 1949, was later written into Article 343 of the Constitution, and the anniversary has been observed within India as Hindi Diwas. Option B, the first World Hindi Conference at Nagpur, took place in 1975, and its anniversary is observed on 10 January as World Hindi Day, which is aimed at promoting the language abroad; swapping these two days is the commonest error in this topic. Option C is wrong because the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950, which is Republic Day, and its adoption on 26 November 1949 is marked as Constitution Day. Option D names the Official Languages Act, which was enacted in 1963 to govern the continued use of English alongside Hindi, and it is a separate milestone.

Q9.Important Days & DatesMedium

International Mother Language Day is observed on

  1. A.21 February
  2. B.14 September
  3. C.10 January
  4. D.30 September
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 21 February

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 21 February. UNESCO declared this day to promote the use and preservation of mother tongues, and the date commemorates the Bengali language movement of 1952, when students in Dhaka were killed while demanding recognition for Bengali in what was then East Pakistan. Option B, 14 September, is Hindi Diwas, observed because the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the official language of the Union on that day in 1949, and it is an Indian national observance rather than an international one. Option C, 10 January, is World Hindi Day, marking the first World Hindi Conference at Nagpur in 1975. Option D, 30 September, is International Translation Day, kept on the feast day of Saint Jerome, who translated the Bible. All four concern language, which is why the options are grouped this way, but only the February date is the mother language day.

Q10.Important Days & DatesHard

World Poetry Day, declared by UNESCO, falls on

  1. A.21 March
  2. B.23 April
  3. C.21 February
  4. D.15 April
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 21 March

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 21 March. UNESCO adopted World Poetry Day in 1999 to support the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry and to give a hearing to small publishers and to poetry in endangered languages. Option B, 23 April, is World Book and Copyright Day, kept on the death anniversary of Cervantes and the traditional date for the death of Shakespeare, and because both days concern literature they are regularly exchanged in the options. Option C, 21 February, is International Mother Language Day, which shares the day number twenty-one but belongs to February and commemorates the Bengali language movement of 1952. Option D, 15 April, is World Art Day, chosen for the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci. Note the two twenty-firsts in this topic: 21 February for mother language and 21 March for poetry.

Q11.Important Days & DatesMedium

Which two observances fall on 21 June?

  1. A.World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga
  2. B.World Theatre Day and World Dance Day
  3. C.World Heritage Day and International Museum Day
  4. D.World Book Day and World Poetry Day
Show answer

Correct answer: A. World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga

Explanation

The correct answer is A, World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga. World Music Day grew out of the Fete de la Musique begun in France, on which musicians of every kind play free in streets and public places. The International Day of Yoga was declared by the United Nations on a proposal made by India and was first observed in 2015, and 21 June was chosen because it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Option B is wrong because World Theatre Day is on 27 March and International Dance Day on 29 April, two months apart. Option C names 18 April and 18 May, which share a day number but not a month, and are themselves a well-known trap. Option D names 23 April and 21 March, both in the literary cluster but on different dates. Only the June pair genuinely shares one calendar day.

Q12.Important Days & DatesHard

International Chess Day is observed on 20 July because on that day in 1924

  1. A.The first world chess championship was played
  2. B.FIDE, the international chess federation, was founded at Paris
  3. C.Chess was included in the Olympic Games
  4. D.The first chess computer defeated a world champion
Show answer

Correct answer: B. FIDE, the international chess federation, was founded at Paris

Explanation

The correct answer is B, FIDE, the international chess federation, was founded at Paris. The world governing body for chess was established on 20 July 1924 in Paris, and the anniversary is kept as International Chess Day, with the United Nations later recognising it as an international day in acknowledgement of the reach of the game and of its Indian ancestor, chaturanga. Option A is wrong because the world championship was first contested in the eighteen eighties, four decades before the federation existed. Option C is wrong because chess has never been a medal sport at the Olympic Games; the team event organised by the federation is called the Chess Olympiad and is a separate competition. Option D refers to a famous computer victory of the nineteen nineties, which is far too late to explain a date in 1924. The pattern across this topic holds again: the date is a founding anniversary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is World Book and Copyright Day observed on 23 April?

UNESCO chose 23 April because it is a date of unusual literary weight. Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, died on that day in 1616, and the same date is traditionally given for the death of William Shakespeare. Several other writers were born or died on it as well. The day is used to promote reading, publishing and the protection of copyright, and many countries mark it with book fairs and author events.

What is the difference between Hindi Diwas and World Hindi Day?

Hindi Diwas is observed within India on 14 September, because on that day in 1949 the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union, a decision later written into Article 343 of the Constitution. World Hindi Day is observed on 10 January and marks the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference, which met at Nagpur in 1975; it is aimed at promoting Hindi abroad. Swapping the two is the single commonest mistake in this topic.

Why is National Sports Day in India observed on 29 August?

It is the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey player who was born on 29 August 1905 and who was part of the Indian teams that won Olympic gold in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He is regarded as the greatest hockey player India has produced, and the day is used to confer the national sports awards and to encourage participation in sport. The highest Indian award for lifetime achievement in sport also carries his name.

Which days fall on 18 April and 18 May?

18 April is World Heritage Day, formally the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and approved by UNESCO in 1983; it draws attention to the protection of historic buildings and archaeological sites. 18 May is International Museum Day, declared by the International Council of Museums, on which museums around the world open with a common theme. The matching day numbers make this the pair examiners most often exchange.

Which two observances share 21 June?

21 June is both World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga. World Music Day grew out of the Fete de la Musique begun in France, on which musicians play free in public places. The International Day of Yoga was declared by the United Nations on a proposal from India and was first observed in 2015; 21 June was chosen because it is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice. A question giving this date must be read carefully to see which of the two it wants.

Why was 23 June chosen for International Olympic Day?

The International Olympic Committee was founded on 23 June 1894 at a congress held at the Sorbonne in Paris, convened by Pierre de Coubertin, and the first modern Olympic Games followed at Athens in 1896. Olympic Day is observed on the founding anniversary with runs and sporting events organised by national Olympic committees. The anniversary of the Athens Games themselves is marked separately, on 6 April, as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
