Important Days in March and April: Dates, Reasons and MCQs — GK24 title card

Questions on important days are set in almost every general awareness paper, and they are pure recall: a date is given and the observance must be named, or an observance is given and the date must be chosen. March and April together carry a heavy share of these questions because they hold two of the best known international days, Women's Day and World Water Day, and two of the most asked Indian observances, Shaheed Diwas and Ambedkar Jayanti. The safest way to hold the list is to learn the date with the reason behind it, because a date fixed to an event is remembered far longer than a date learnt alone.

The dates that carry a reason

About half of these dates exist because something happened on them, and those are the ones examiners prefer, because the question can be set from either end. 23 March is Shaheed Diwas because Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged at Lahore on that day in 1931, and it is also World Meteorological Day because the World Meteorological Organization came into being on 23 March 1950. 24 March is World Tuberculosis Day because Robert Koch announced to a Berlin audience in 1882 that he had found the bacterium that causes the disease. 7 April is World Health Day because the constitution of the World Health Organization took effect on that date in 1948. 24 April is National Panchayati Raj Day because the Constitution Seventy-third Amendment Act, which gave panchayats constitutional standing, came into force on 24 April 1993. 13 April is remembered for the firing at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in 1919, on the day of Baisakhi.

How examiners build the traps

The first trap is the pair of days named Martyrs' Day. 30 January is Martyrs' Day for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, while 23 March is the Shaheed Diwas of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru; a question naming the three revolutionaries must take the March date. The second trap is putting environment days into one heap: World Water Day is 22 March, World Wildlife Day is 3 March, Earth Day is 22 April and World Environment Day belongs to 5 June, which is outside these two months altogether. The third is the pair of dates in the twenties, where 22 March and 22 April carry water and the earth respectively, and 23 April and 24 April carry books and panchayats. Revise them in date order once a week and the whole chapter becomes a few easy marks.

Exam Point of View

Papers set this chapter from both directions: they give the date and ask for the day, or give the day and ask for the date, so each pair must be known in both orders. The near certainties from these two months are 8 March, 22 March, 23 March, 7 April and 14 April. A second layer of questions asks why a date was chosen, where the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948, the coming into force of the Seventy-third Amendment in 1993 and Koch's announcement of 1882 are the usual answers. Indian observances such as National Safety Day on 4 March, National Maritime Day on 5 April and National Civil Services Day on 21 April appear in state examinations more than in central ones. The three standing traps are confusing the two Martyrs' Days of 30 January and 23 March, placing World Environment Day inside these months when it falls on 5 June, and mixing up Earth Day on 22 April with World Water Day on 22 March.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Important Days & DatesEasy

World Water Day is observed every year on which date?

  1. A.3 March
  2. B.22 March
  3. C.22 April
  4. D.5 June
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 22 March

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 22 March. The United Nations observes this day to draw attention to fresh water and the management of water resources, and in India the same date is also kept as Bihar Diwas, which makes it doubly useful for examinations.

Option A, 3 March, is World Wildlife Day, which marks the signing of the international convention on trade in endangered species. Option C, 22 April, is Earth Day, first held in 1970; the matching day of the month is exactly why it is placed here. Option D, 5 June, is World Environment Day, the best known environmental observance of the year but one that falls outside March and April altogether. Keep the order in mind: wildlife on 3 March, water on 22 March, the earth on 22 April and the environment on 5 June.

Q2.Important Days & DatesEasy

International Women's Day is observed on

  1. A.1 March
  2. B.8 March
  3. C.15 March
  4. D.8 April
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 8 March

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 8 March. The day grew out of the movements for women's rights in the early twentieth century and is now observed across the world, with the United Nations adopting a different subject for it each year while the date itself stays fixed.

Option A, 1 March, is Zero Discrimination Day, observed by the United Nations programme on HIV and AIDS. Option C, 15 March, is World Consumer Rights Day, which marks the speech on the rights of consumers made in the United States in 1962. Option D, 8 April, has no major observance attached to it and is placed only to test whether the candidate remembers the month as well as the day. This is among the most frequently asked dates in the whole chapter, so it should be automatic.

Q3.Important Days & DatesEasy

World Health Day is observed on 7 April to mark which event?

  1. A.The founding of the Red Cross
  2. B.The coming into being of the World Health Organization in 1948
  3. C.The discovery of penicillin
  4. D.The eradication of smallpox
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The coming into being of the World Health Organization in 1948

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the coming into being of the World Health Organization in 1948. The constitution of the organisation took effect on 7 April 1948, and that date was chosen for the annual observance, which has been held since 1950 with a different subject each year.

Option A, the founding of the Red Cross, is marked instead by World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on 8 May, the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant. Option C, the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, is a landmark in medicine but has no international day attached to it. Option D, the eradication of smallpox, was declared in 1980 and is commemorated in the history of the World Health Organization rather than by a separate day. Attach the year 1948 to the date and this question cannot go wrong.

Q4.Important Days & DatesEasy

Shaheed Diwas, marking the execution of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, is observed on

  1. A.30 January
  2. B.23 March
  3. C.13 April
  4. D.8 August
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 23 March

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 23 March. The three revolutionaries were hanged in Lahore jail on 23 March 1931 in connection with the Lahore conspiracy case, and the day is observed in their memory across the country.

Option A, 30 January, is also called Martyrs' Day, but it marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, which is why the names in the question matter more than the label. Option C, 13 April, is the anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 at Amritsar, another day of mourning in the same season. Option D, 8 August, is associated with the launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942. Read the names given in the stem: three revolutionaries point to 23 March, and Gandhi to 30 January.

Q5.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Wildlife Day is observed on which date?

  1. A.3 March
  2. B.20 March
  3. C.21 March
  4. D.5 April
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 3 March

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 3 March. The United Nations chose this date because the international convention on trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora was signed on 3 March, and the day is used to draw attention to wild animals and plants and to the trade that threatens them.

Option B, 20 March, carries two other observances, the International Day of Happiness and World Sparrow Day, the second of which is about a bird and therefore tempting here. Option C, 21 March, is the International Day of Forests and also World Poetry Day. Option D, 5 April, is National Maritime Day in India and has nothing to do with wildlife. March is crowded with environment related days, so learn them in sequence: wildlife on the third, sparrows on the twentieth, forests on the twenty-first and water on the twenty-second.

Q6.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Tuberculosis Day is observed on 24 March because on that date in 1882

  1. A.The World Health Organization was founded
  2. B.Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium causing tuberculosis
  3. C.The first vaccine against tuberculosis was given
  4. D.The first sanatorium for tuberculosis was opened
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium causing tuberculosis

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium causing tuberculosis. He presented his finding to an audience of physicians in Berlin on 24 March 1882, and identifying the organism opened the way to diagnosis and eventually to treatment of a disease that was then a leading cause of death.

Option A, the founding of the World Health Organization, belongs to 7 April 1948 and is the reason for World Health Day, a different date in this same chapter. Option C, the first vaccination against tuberculosis, came decades after Koch's announcement and has no day named for it. Option D, the opening of a sanatorium, is not the basis of any international observance. The safe pair to remember is Koch on 24 March and the World Health Organization on 7 April.

Q7.Important Days & DatesEasy

Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated every year on

  1. A.11 April
  2. B.13 April
  3. C.14 April
  4. D.24 April
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 14 April

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 14 April, the birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, who was born in 1891 and who chaired the drafting committee of the Constitution of India. The day is observed across the country and is a public holiday in many states.

Option A, 11 April, is National Safe Motherhood Day, observed on the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi. Option B, 13 April, is the anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, which fell on the day of Baisakhi. Option D, 24 April, is National Panchayati Raj Day, marking the coming into force of the Seventy-third Amendment in 1993. All four are real April dates, which is what makes this question worth a careful look; the middle of April in particular carries one important date after another.

Q8.Important Days & DatesMedium

National Panchayati Raj Day is observed on 24 April because on that date in 1993

  1. A.The Balwant Rai Mehta Committee gave its report
  2. B.The Seventy-third Amendment to the Constitution came into force
  3. C.The first panchayat election was held in India
  4. D.The Ministry of Panchayati Raj was created
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The Seventy-third Amendment to the Constitution came into force

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Seventy-third Amendment to the Constitution came into force. The amendment of 1992 gave panchayati raj institutions constitutional standing by adding Part IX and the Eleventh Schedule, and it took effect on 24 April 1993, which is why that date was chosen for the observance.

Option A, the Balwant Rai Mehta Committee, recommended the three tier panchayat system in 1957, long before the amendment, and no day is named for its report. Option C, the first panchayat elections after the new system, were held in the states at different times and could not give a single national date. Option D, the creation of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, came later and is not the basis of the day. This date is asked in the polity paper as well, so it is worth learning once and using twice.

Q9.Important Days & DatesMedium

World Heritage Day, the International Day for Monuments and Sites, is observed on

  1. A.17 April
  2. B.18 April
  3. C.23 April
  4. D.26 April
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 18 April

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 18 April. The day was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and later approved by UNESCO, and it is used to draw attention to the protection of monuments, historic places and cultural landscapes.

Option A, 17 April, is World Haemophilia Day, kept on the birth anniversary of the founder of the world federation for that disorder. Option C, 23 April, is World Book and Copyright Day, another UNESCO observance and therefore an easy date to confuse with this one. Option D, 26 April, is World Intellectual Property Day, marking the coming into force in 1970 of the convention that established the world organisation for intellectual property. The last third of April carries three UNESCO linked days in a row, so learn 18, 23 and 26 as a set.

Q10.Important Days & DatesMedium

Earth Day, first observed in 1970, is marked every year on

  1. A.22 March
  2. B.18 April
  3. C.22 April
  4. D.5 June
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 22 April

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 22 April. Earth Day began in the United States in 1970 as a demonstration in support of environmental protection and is now observed in many countries as a day for action on pollution, climate and conservation.

Option A, 22 March, is World Water Day, and the shared day of the month makes it the strongest distractor in this set. Option B, 18 April, is World Heritage Day, which is about monuments and sites rather than the natural environment. Option D, 5 June, is World Environment Day, the observance led by the United Nations environment programme, and candidates often choose it because it sounds closest in meaning. Fix the three separately: water on 22 March, the earth on 22 April and the environment on 5 June.

Q11.Important Days & DatesHard

World Consumer Rights Day is observed on which date?

  1. A.15 March
  2. B.24 March
  3. C.24 December
  4. D.5 April
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 15 March

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 15 March. The day recalls the speech of 1962 in which the rights of the consumer were first set out formally before the United States Congress, and it is now used worldwide to press for fair treatment of buyers.

Option B, 24 March, is World Tuberculosis Day. Option C, 24 December, is National Consumer Rights Day in India, kept on the date on which the Indian consumer protection legislation received assent, and it is the distractor that catches most candidates, because the two consumer days are genuinely different: the world day in March and the national day in December. Option D, 5 April, is National Maritime Day. Learn the consumer pair together, 15 March for the world and 24 December for India, and both questions become safe.

Q12.Important Days & DatesHard

National Maritime Day is observed in India on

  1. A.1 April
  2. B.5 April
  3. C.11 April
  4. D.21 April
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 5 April

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 5 April. The day marks the first voyage of an Indian owned merchant ship from Mumbai to Britain in 1919, a landmark in the history of Indian shipping, and it is observed to recognise the role of the merchant navy in trade.

Option A, 1 April, is Odisha Day, also called Utkal Divas, and is remembered in another chapter as the date on which the Reserve Bank of India began functioning in 1935. Option C, 11 April, is National Safe Motherhood Day, kept on the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi. Option D, 21 April, is National Civil Services Day, which recalls the address of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to the first batch of administrative service probationers in 1947. These four Indian observances fall within three weeks of each other, so they are best learnt as one short list in date order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Shaheed Diwas observed on 23 March?

Because Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru were hanged in Lahore jail on 23 March 1931 in connection with the Lahore conspiracy case. India also observes a Martyrs' Day on 30 January, the day Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, so the name alone is not enough; the names in the question decide the date.

Which important days fall on 22 March and 22 April?

22 March is World Water Day, on which the United Nations draws attention to fresh water and its management, and it is also observed as Bihar Diwas. 22 April is Earth Day, first held in 1970 and now observed for the protection of the environment. The two dates are placed in the same set of options very often, so keep water in March and the earth in April.

Why is World Health Day observed on 7 April?

Because the constitution of the World Health Organization came into force on 7 April 1948, which is treated as the founding date of the organisation. The day has been observed since 1950 and each year carries a different subject chosen by the organisation, but the date itself never changes.

Why is National Panchayati Raj Day observed on 24 April?

Because the Constitution Seventy-third Amendment Act of 1992, which gave panchayati raj institutions constitutional status and added Part IX and the Eleventh Schedule to the Constitution, came into force on 24 April 1993. The day is therefore useful twice over, once in the days chapter and once in polity.

Which Indian observances in these two months are most often missed?

National Safety Day on 4 March, National Maritime Day on 5 April, which marks the first voyage of an Indian owned ship to Britain in 1919, National Safe Motherhood Day on 11 April, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, and National Civil Services Day on 21 April, which recalls Sardar Patel's address to the first batch of administrative service probationers in 1947.
