Armed Forces and Service Days: Dates and Their Reasons — GK24 title card

Questions on important days are decided in a single second: either the date is remembered or it is not. The days of the armed forces and of the civil services are the most frequently asked group of all, because each of them is tied to an event of national history, and examiners like a question that carries a fact behind it. This note gives the dates in order, the event each one marks and the traps that are set around them, so that a whole section of the paper can be revised in ten minutes.

The three services

DayDateWhat it marks
Army Day15 JanuaryField Marshal K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander in Chief in 1949
Air Force Day8 OctoberThe Indian Air Force was raised on this day in 1932
Navy Day4 DecemberOperation Trident, the attack on Karachi harbour in the war of 1971
Armed Forces Flag Day7 DecemberObserved since 1949 to raise funds for the welfare of soldiers and their families
Armed Forces Veterans Day14 JanuaryThe day Field Marshal Cariappa retired from service in 1953

Note how close Army Day and Veterans Day fall, and that both are attached to the same soldier, Cariappa, who was the first Indian to command the army and one of only two officers to hold the rank of Field Marshal, the other being Sam Manekshaw.

Days of war and remembrance

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas, 26 July, marks the end of the Kargil conflict in 1999 and the recapture of the heights in the Dras and Batalik sectors.
  • Vijay Diwas, 16 December, marks the victory in the war of 1971 and the surrender at Dhaka, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
  • Infantry Day, 27 October, remembers the airlift of the first Indian troops to Srinagar in 1947 to meet the tribal invasion of Kashmir.
  • Police Commemoration Day, 21 October, honours the policemen killed in an ambush at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959.

The raising days of the central forces

ForceRaising Day
Central Reserve Police Force27 July
Central Industrial Security Force10 March
Indian Coast Guard1 February
Indo Tibetan Border Police24 October
Border Security Force1 December

The Border Security Force and the Indo Tibetan Border Police were both raised after the wars of the nineteen sixties, the first after the war of 1965 and the second after the conflict of 1962, and the Central Industrial Security Force was created in 1969 to guard public sector undertakings. Two of these dates sit close to the days of the services, and a careless candidate confuses the raising day of the Border Security Force on 1 December with Navy Day on 4 December.

How to remember the dates

The safest method is to hold each day with the event behind it rather than as a bare number. Army Day belongs to Cariappa, Navy Day to the raid on Karachi, Air Force Day to the year 1932, Kargil Vijay Diwas to 1999 and Vijay Diwas to Dhaka. A second useful habit is to group the dates by month: January carries Army Day and Veterans Day, April carries the fire service and the civil services, October carries the Air Force, the Infantry and the police, and December carries the Navy, the Flag Day and the victory of 1971. Papers also set the days of two services in the same question, so the final check before answering is which service the question actually names.

Exam Point of View

Papers set this topic in three ways. Most often they simply ask the date of a day, and the options are the days of the other two services, so the candidate must read which force is named. Second, they ask what a day commemorates, where Navy Day and Operation Trident, Army Day and Cariappa, and Police Commemoration Day and Hot Springs are the standard pairs. Third, they reverse the question and give a date, asking which day falls on it, and here the dangerous cluster is December, which holds Navy Day on the fourth, Flag Day on the seventh and Vijay Diwas on the sixteenth. Learning each date with its event, and not as a bare number, settles all three forms.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Important Days & DatesEasy

Indian Army Day is observed every year on which date?

  1. A.15 January
  2. B.26 January
  3. C.8 October
  4. D.4 December
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 15 January

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 15 January. On this day in 1949 Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, and the day is marked with a parade and the presentation of gallantry awards. Option B is wrong because 26 January is Republic Day, the day the Constitution came into force in 1950, and although the armed forces take part in its parade it is not the day of the army. Option C is wrong because 8 October is Air Force Day, the day on which the Indian Air Force was raised in 1932. Option D is wrong because 4 December is Navy Day, kept for the attack on Karachi harbour in 1971. Papers place the three service days in one question, so read which force is named.

Q2.Important Days & DatesMedium

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on 4 December to commemorate which event?

  1. A.The raising of the Indian Navy in 1934
  2. B.Operation Trident against Karachi harbour in the war of 1971
  3. C.The commissioning of the first Indian aircraft carrier
  4. D.The naval mutiny of 1946 at Bombay
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Operation Trident against Karachi harbour in the war of 1971

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Operation Trident. During the war of 1971 Indian missile boats struck Karachi harbour in an action that sank enemy vessels and set the oil installations on fire, and 4 December is kept as Navy Day in memory of it. Option A is wrong because the raising of the force belongs to a different date and the day is not an anniversary of its establishment, unlike Air Force Day. Option C is wrong because the commissioning of a carrier is a separate event in naval history and no day of remembrance is attached to it. Option D is wrong because the naval uprising of 1946 is an important episode of the freedom struggle but is not what this day marks. Tie 4 December to Karachi and the pair is fixed.

Q3.Important Days & DatesMedium

Indian Air Force Day is observed on 8 October because on this day in 1932 the force was

  1. A.given its first fighter squadron
  2. B.officially raised
  3. C.renamed the Indian Air Force
  4. D.placed under an Indian chief
Show answer

Correct answer: B. officially raised

Explanation

The correct answer is B, officially raised. The Indian Air Force was constituted on 8 October 1932 and its first flight took to the air in the following year, which is why the day is kept as the anniversary of the force itself and is marked by a display at an air force station. Option A is wrong because the raising of the first squadron followed the creation of the force and is not the reason for the date. Option C is wrong because the change of name relates to a later period, when the prefix Royal was dropped after independence, and no day is kept for it. Option D is wrong because the appointment of the first Indian chief came in 1954 and is remembered as a separate landmark. Hold 8 October with the year 1932.

Q4.Important Days & DatesEasy

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on which date?

  1. A.26 July
  2. B.16 December
  3. C.27 October
  4. D.21 October
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 26 July

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 26 July. The Kargil conflict of 1999 ended on this day with the recapture of the heights held in the Dras, Batalik and Kargil sectors, and the day is observed in memory of the soldiers who died in that campaign. Option B is wrong because 16 December is Vijay Diwas, the anniversary of the victory of 1971 and of the surrender at Dhaka, and the two victory days are the commonest pair of distractors in this topic. Option C is wrong because 27 October is Infantry Day, for the airlift of troops to Srinagar in 1947. Option D is wrong because 21 October is Police Commemoration Day. Attach each date to its war and the confusion between 1971 and 1999 disappears.

Q5.Important Days & DatesHard

Armed Forces Flag Day, on which funds are collected for the welfare of soldiers and their families, falls on which date?

  1. A.1 December
  2. B.4 December
  3. C.7 December
  4. D.16 December
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 7 December

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 7 December. Armed Forces Flag Day has been observed since 1949, when it was decided that the country should contribute to the welfare of serving personnel, veterans and the families of those killed in service, and small flags are distributed in return for contributions. Option A is wrong because 1 December is the raising day of the Border Security Force. Option B is wrong because 4 December is Navy Day, kept for Operation Trident of 1971. Option D is wrong because 16 December is Vijay Diwas for the victory of 1971. December is the most crowded month in this topic, holding four separate days, so a candidate should revise the month as a block and not one day at a time.

Q6.Important Days & DatesHard

Police Commemoration Day, observed on 21 October, remembers the policemen killed in an ambush at which place?

  1. A.Hot Springs in Ladakh
  2. B.The Rann of Kutch
  3. C.The Tawang sector
  4. D.The Chambal ravines
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Hot Springs in Ladakh

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Hot Springs in Ladakh. A small patrol of the Central Reserve Police Force was ambushed there in October 1959 and several policemen were killed, and since then 21 October has been kept as the day on which the country remembers all police personnel who died on duty during the year. Option B is wrong because the Rann of Kutch is associated with the border clash of 1965 and with the wild ass sanctuary, not with this day. Option C is wrong because the Tawang sector belongs to the fighting of 1962 in the eastern Himalaya, a different theatre and a different year. Option D is wrong because the Chambal ravines are connected with campaigns against dacoity and with no day of remembrance of this kind.

Q7.Important Days & DatesMedium

Civil Services Day is observed in India on which date?

  1. A.14 April
  2. B.21 April
  3. C.1 July
  4. D.15 September
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 21 April

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 21 April. On this day in 1947 Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the first batch of probationers of the administrative service at Metcalfe House in Delhi and described the services as the steel frame that would hold the country together, and the day is now marked with awards for excellence in public administration. Option A is wrong because 14 April is National Fire Service Day, kept for the firemen who died in the Bombay dock explosion of 1944, and it is also the birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar. Option C is wrong because 1 July is National Doctors' Day, for Dr B. C. Roy. Option D is wrong because 15 September is Engineers' Day, for Sir M. Visvesvaraya. April holds two service days, so keep the pair apart.

Q8.Important Days & DatesEasy

National Doctors' Day is observed in India on 1 July in memory of which person?

  1. A.Dr B. C. Roy
  2. B.Dr B. R. Ambedkar
  3. C.Dr S. Radhakrishnan
  4. D.Sir M. Visvesvaraya
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Dr B. C. Roy

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Dr B. C. Roy. The physician and Chief Minister of West Bengal was born on 1 July and died on the same date, and the day was fixed in his memory to honour the work of doctors. He was also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna. Option B is wrong because the birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar falls on 14 April and is kept as Ambedkar Jayanti. Option C is wrong because the birth anniversary of Dr S. Radhakrishnan, on 5 September, is observed as Teachers' Day, and candidates often pick him because of the title of doctor before his name. Option D is wrong because Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the engineer whose birthday is 15 September, gives the country its Engineers' Day.

Q9.Important Days & DatesMedium

National Fire Service Day on 14 April is observed in memory of the firemen who died in which incident?

  1. A.The Bombay dock explosion of 1944
  2. B.The Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984
  3. C.The Chennai floods
  4. D.The Calcutta market fire of 1970
Show answer

Correct answer: A. The Bombay dock explosion of 1944

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the Bombay dock explosion of 1944. A ship carrying explosives caught fire at the docks and blew up, and dozens of firemen died fighting the blaze; 14 April is kept in their memory and the week that follows is observed as fire service week to spread awareness of fire safety. Option B is wrong because the Bhopal gas tragedy of December 1984 led to the Environment Protection Act of 1986 but not to this day. Option C is wrong because the floods in Chennai are a recent disaster and no national day is attached to them. Option D is wrong because no day of remembrance was instituted for a market fire of that description. Note that 14 April is also Ambedkar Jayanti.

Q10.Important Days & DatesEasy

Vijay Diwas, observed on 16 December, marks the victory of India in which war?

  1. A.The war of 1962
  2. B.The war of 1965
  3. C.The war of 1971
  4. D.The Kargil conflict of 1999
Show answer

Correct answer: C. The war of 1971

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the war of 1971. On 16 December 1971 the Pakistani forces surrendered at Dhaka, the largest surrender since the Second World War, and the war ended with the creation of Bangladesh. The day is observed as Vijay Diwas by the armed forces. Option A is wrong because the conflict of 1962 with China ended without any such day being kept. Option B is wrong because the war of 1965 is remembered through its own anniversaries but Vijay Diwas is not one of them. Option D is wrong because the victory in the Kargil conflict of 1999 is observed on 26 July as Kargil Vijay Diwas, and the similarity of the two names is exactly what the examiner is testing. Remember July for Kargil and December for Dhaka.

Q11.Important Days & DatesEasy

Engineers' Day is celebrated in India on 15 September on the birth anniversary of

  1. A.Sir M. Visvesvaraya
  2. B.Homi Bhabha
  3. C.Vikram Sarabhai
  4. D.A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Sir M. Visvesvaraya

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Born on 15 September 1861, he was the engineer behind the Krishna Raja Sagara dam and the flood protection works at Hyderabad, served as the Diwan of Mysore and received the Bharat Ratna, and the day honours the profession through his name. Option B is wrong because Homi Bhabha is remembered as the architect of the Indian nuclear programme and no national day is attached to his birthday. Option C is wrong because Vikram Sarabhai is the father of the Indian space programme, and the space day of the country is linked to a mission rather than to his birth. Option D is wrong because A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, though an engineer and a President, is remembered on his own birthday in October as a day for students.

Q12.Important Days & DatesHard

Infantry Day, observed on 27 October, commemorates which event of 1947?

  1. A.The airlift of Indian troops to Srinagar
  2. B.The accession of Hyderabad
  3. C.The formation of the Territorial Army
  4. D.The first Republic Day parade
Show answer

Correct answer: A. The airlift of Indian troops to Srinagar

Explanation

The correct answer is A, the airlift of Indian troops to Srinagar. On 27 October 1947, a day after the Instrument of Accession was signed by the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, the first infantry company was flown into Srinagar to meet the tribal invasion, and the day is kept by the infantry as its own. Option B is wrong because Hyderabad was integrated in September 1948 through a separate operation. Option C is wrong because the Territorial Army was raised in 1949 and has its own day in October, which makes it a tempting but wrong choice here. Option D is wrong because the first Republic Day parade belongs to 1950 and to 26 January. Pair 27 October with Srinagar and 1947 and the question is settled.
