The second Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture was held at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC) in New Delhi on the evening of 5 October 2026. The centre, which works under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, organised the lecture along with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA).

Who took part

The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant. The lecture itself was delivered by Justice Vikram Nath, Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. A special reflection on the life and work of Prof. Madhava Menon was offered by R. Venkataramani, the Attorney General for India. Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Senior Professor at the Indian Law Institute, President of CLEA and a member of the 21st Law Commission of India, also addressed the gathering.

The theme

The lecture carried the theme 'Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law'. Justice Vikram Nath held that the administration of justice needs a humane and compassionate approach, while stressing that compassion must stay anchored in the principles of law, in fairness and in constitutional values. The gathering of judges, legal academics and practitioners used the occasion to reflect on the human side of the judicial process.

Two books released

The Chief Justice of India released both volumes at the function. Each carries a foreword by a judge of the Supreme Court of India. The books were introduced by Gowrishankar Natesan, publisher at Thomson Reuters and Chief Executive Officer of Southshore Innovations Private Limited, by Nabila Zehra of the School of Law at SGT University, Gurugram, and by Dr. Sougata Talukdar of the Government Centre of Legal Education at the University of Burdwan.

Why the lecture is held

The series commemorates Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon, a legal educator, scholar and builder of institutions whose work changed the shape of legal education in the country. The lecture is meant to carry his intellectual legacy forward by keeping a dialogue going among judges, legal scholars, practitioners and students on law, justice and legal education. Col. Akash Patil, Director of the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, gave the welcome address, and Dr. Ruchi Sharma D., Joint General Secretary of CLEA, proposed the vote of thanks.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalMedium

Who delivered the 2nd Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre?

  1. A.Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant
  2. B.Justice Vikram Nath
  3. C.Attorney General R. Venkataramani
  4. D.Prof. S. Sivakumar
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Justice Vikram Nath

Explanation

The correct answer is Justice Vikram Nath, Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, who delivered the memorial lecture on the theme of judging with compassion and argued that a humane approach to justice must stay anchored in the principles of law, fairness and constitutional values. Option A names the Chief Justice of India, who inaugurated the programme and released two law books at it, but did not deliver the lecture. Option C names the Attorney General for India, who offered a special reflection on the life and contribution of Prof. Madhava Menon. Option D names the author of the two books released and the President of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association, who also addressed the gathering. Each of the four took part, so the question turns on who delivered the lecture itself, and that was Justice Vikram Nath.

Q2.NationalEasy

What was the theme of the 2nd Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture?

  1. A.Legal Education for a New India
  2. B.Access to Justice for the Last Citizen
  3. C.Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law
  4. D.Indian Personal Law: Unity and Diversity
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law

Explanation

The correct answer is Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law. The lecture, organised by the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association, brought together judges, legal academics and practitioners to reflect on the human dimension of the judicial process and on the place of compassion, empathy and sensitivity in the delivery of justice. Option D is a trap, because it names one of the two books released at the same function rather than the theme of the lecture. Options A and B are phrases of the kind used for other legal conferences and for legal aid campaigns, and neither is the theme here. The memorial lecture series commemorates Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon, whose work reshaped legal education in the country, so the theme, the venue and the edition are the facts to hold together.

Q3.NationalMedium

Under which ministry does the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre function?

  1. A.Ministry of Law and Justice
  2. B.Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment
  3. C.Ministry of Culture
  4. D.Ministry of Education
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

Explanation

The correct answer is the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, under which the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi functions, and which announced the holding of the second Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture there. Option A is the tempting choice because the event was about law and justice and was attended by the Chief Justice of India, a Supreme Court judge and the Attorney General, but that ministry does not run this centre. Options C and D name ministries that run other cultural and educational institutions in the capital and are not connected with this centre. The centre organised the lecture along with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association, and its Director, Col. Akash Patil, gave the welcome address, while the Joint General Secretary of the association proposed the vote of thanks. Only option B is correct.
