Why in News

On 5 October 2026 the Ministry of Coal reported that Coal India’s offtake in the first half of 2026-27 reached 384.2 MT, with 302.8 MT going to the power sector and domestic coal-based generation rising to 640.05 BU.

The Ministry of Coal on 5 October 2026 set out how Coal India Limited (CIL) has strengthened coal supply to the power sector, the company that sends close to four-fifths of its coal to power plants. The figures cover the first half of the financial year 2026-27 and show gains in lifting, despatch and generation over the same months a year earlier.

Offtake climbs

CIL’s total coal offtake in the first six months of 2026-27 stood at 384.2 MT against 357.0 MT a year earlier, a rise of 27.2 MT or 7.6 per cent. The gain widened in the second quarter, where offtake went from 166.04 MT to 186.04 MT, a growth of 12.05 per cent. September alone saw supplies of 61.20 MT against 54.40 MT in the same month last year, up 12.5 per cent. The company also drew down 63 MT of pithead stocks during the half-year, so the extra coal came from stored inventory as well as fresh output.

Power sector first

Despatch to the power sector in the first half reached 302.8 MT compared with 285.4 MT, an increase of 17.4 MT or 6.1 per cent. That was close to 79 per cent of all the coal CIL lifted in the half-year. Second-quarter supplies to power plants rose from 133.50 MT to 148.20 MT, a growth of 11 per cent, while September deliveries went up from 44.20 MT to 48.90 MT, a gain of 4.70 MT or 10.63 per cent. Daily despatch to power plants in September averaged about 1.63 MT.

Effect on generation

The supply gains showed up in electricity output. Generation from domestic coal rose to 640.05 BU in the first half of 2026-27 from 582.5 BU a year earlier, an increase of about 57.5 BU or 9.9 per cent.

How the coal moves

  • Power plants are served mainly through Fuel Supply Agreements and linkage mechanisms, with market-based channels for short-term needs
  • Linkage rationalisation, digital systems and consumer portals have added flexibility to distribution
  • First Mile Connectivity, rapid loading systems and digital monitoring are the focus of current investment
  • 46 CHP-silos give 432 MT of mechanised closed-loop evacuation capacity, and more are planned at upcoming greenfield mines

The ministry framed the exercise as a move from higher supply to assured supply, with coal treated as one link in a chain that runs from the mine through evacuation and generation to electricity reaching the consumer.

Exam Point of View

Note the half-year offtake of 384.2 MT against 357.0 MT, the power-sector despatch of 302.8 MT and its 79 per cent share, September supplies of 61.20 MT, generation of 640.05 BU against 582.5 BU, and the 46 CHP-silos with 432 MT of evacuation capacity. Coal India supplies nearly four-fifths of its coal to power plants.

Practice Questions

Q1.EconomyMedium

What was Coal India’s total coal offtake in the first half of the financial year 2026-27?

  1. A.357.0 MT
  2. B.376.5 MT
  3. C.384.2 MT
  4. D.402.6 MT
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 384.2 MT

Explanation

The correct answer is 384.2 MT. Coal India lifted 384.2 MT in the first six months of the financial year 2026-27, an increase of 27.2 MT or 7.6 per cent over the same months of the previous year. Option A, 357.0 MT, is the figure for that earlier period and is therefore the classic trap in a question of this type, because a candidate who remembers only one number often picks the base year by mistake. Option B and option D do not appear in the ministry statement at all. The pace of the gain rose through the year: second-quarter offtake went from 166.04 MT to 186.04 MT, a growth of 12.05 per cent, and September supplies alone climbed from 54.40 MT to 61.20 MT. Always learn the current figure together with the figure it is being compared against, since examiners ask for both.

Q2.EconomyMedium

Roughly what share of Coal India’s first-half offtake in 2026-27 was sent to the power sector?

  1. A.59 per cent
  2. B.69 per cent
  3. C.79 per cent
  4. D.89 per cent
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 79 per cent

Explanation

The correct answer is about 79 per cent. Of the coal Coal India lifted in the first half of the financial year 2026-27, nearly 79 per cent was directed to the power sector, which confirms how central electricity generation is to the company’s distribution strategy. In absolute terms power-sector despatch was 302.8 MT against 285.4 MT a year earlier, a rise of 17.4 MT or 6.1 per cent. The statement also notes that Coal India supplies close to four-fifths of its coal to the power sector as a matter of course, and four-fifths is another way of stating the same proportion, so the two expressions should be linked in memory. Options A and B understate the share, while option D overstates it. In the second quarter the company sent 148.20 MT to power plants against 133.50 MT a year earlier, a growth of 11 per cent.

Q3.EconomyMedium

Electricity generation from domestic coal in the first half of 2026-27 was reported as

  1. A.582.5 BU
  2. B.610.2 BU
  3. C.640.05 BU
  4. D.668.4 BU
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 640.05 BU

Explanation

The correct answer is 640.05 BU. Generation from domestic coal rose to 640.05 billion units in the first half of the financial year 2026-27 from 582.5 billion units in the corresponding period a year earlier, an increase of roughly 57.5 billion units or 9.9 per cent. Option A, 582.5 BU, is the figure for the previous year and is the expected trap. Options B and D are invented numbers that do not appear in the statement. The point the ministry draws from this comparison is that a coal supply system is finally judged by whether it supports electricity generation, so the generation number is read alongside the offtake and despatch numbers rather than on its own. Candidates should remember the unit as well: coal is measured in million tonnes while generation is measured in billion units.

Q4.EconomyHard

How much mechanised closed-loop evacuation capacity do Coal India’s CHP-silos provide?

  1. A.232 MT from 26 silos
  2. B.332 MT from 36 silos
  3. C.432 MT from 46 silos
  4. D.532 MT from 56 silos
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 432 MT from 46 silos

Explanation

The correct answer is 432 MT from 46 silos. The ministry statement records that 46 CHP-silos give Coal India 432 MT of mechanised closed-loop evacuation capacity, and that the company is considering more such silos at greenfield mines about to be opened. These silos belong to a wider set of investments meant to move from higher supply to assured supply, alongside First Mile Connectivity, rapid loading systems and digital monitoring. Options A, B and D pair invented figures and are wrong. Candidates should also note why evacuation matters: coal has to be lifted from the pithead and moved to the consumer, and in the first half of the year the company drew down 63 MT of pithead stocks, which shows that stored coal can be released quickly only when evacuation capacity exists to carry it.
