Why in News

On 5 October 2026 the Prime Minister of India and the President of Switzerland held a summit in India and announced agreements on transport and infrastructure, migration and mobility, and young professionals.

The Prime Minister of India and the President of Switzerland addressed a joint press statement on 5 October 2026, at the end of a summit held during the Swiss leader’s visit to India. The two leaders described innovation, infrastructure and advanced technology as the pillars of the partnership, and announced a set of agreements meant to widen trade, investment and the movement of people between the two countries.

Trade and investment

The summit built on the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which came into force in October of the previous year with the Swiss President’s personal backing. It is India’s first free trade agreement with any economic bloc in Europe. The pact is designed to bring 100 billion dollars of investment into India and create 10 lakh direct jobs over the following 15 years.

The two sides took decisions to widen market access for Indian goods in Switzerland and to make two-way investment easier. Indian exports of agriculture produce, pharmaceuticals, textiles and engineering goods are expected to gain, while Swiss money is being sought for biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing and sustainability.

Agreements announced

  • An agreement on transport, mobility and infrastructure, backed by Swiss work on the Varanasi ropeway, the Jewar airport at Noida and railway and tunnelling projects in hill areas
  • A Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement
  • A Young Professionals Agreement opening places for Indian students, researchers and professionals in Switzerland
  • An agreement with Zurich University to build the capacity of Indian science start-ups

Defence, energy and science

The leaders identified fresh scope for military exchanges and cooperation in defence production, and agreed to deepen work on nuclear energy. Joint research projects are to be launched in health, clean energy and space. Both sides also discussed cooperation in yoga and Ayurveda, which are gaining followers in Switzerland.

What comes next

The Swiss President arrived with a large business delegation, and a Prosperity Summit with India–EFTA business leaders is to be held in his presence on 7 October. India recalled that it hosted the world’s largest artificial intelligence summit in February this year, and wished Switzerland success for the Geneva AI Summit it will host next year. On global questions, both countries spoke for reform of global institutions and for peace efforts in Ukraine and West Asia.

Exam Point of View

Remember that EFTA, not the European Union, is the bloc behind India’s first European free trade pact; the TEPA targets of 100 billion dollars and 10 lakh jobs in 15 years; the three agreements announced; the Zurich University tie-up; the Prosperity Summit on 7 October; and the Geneva AI Summit that Switzerland hosts next year.

Practice Questions

Q1.InternationalEasy

India’s first free trade agreement with an economic bloc in Europe has been signed with which grouping?

  1. A.European Union
  2. B.European Free Trade Association
  3. C.Benelux Union
  4. D.Eurasian Economic Union
Show answer

Correct answer: B. European Free Trade Association

Explanation

The correct answer is the European Free Trade Association. The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement that took effect in October of the previous year was concluded between India and the EFTA countries, and it is the first free trade agreement India has with any economic bloc in Europe. Switzerland is an EFTA member, and the Swiss President gave the agreement his personal backing, which is why it figured so prominently in the summit statement. Option A is wrong because the European Union is a separate and much larger bloc, and India has no free trade agreement in force with it. Option C is wrong because the Benelux Union groups Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and is not a party to this agreement. Option D is wrong because the Eurasian Economic Union is a different grouping altogether and has no role in this pact. Aspirants should link TEPA firmly with EFTA and with the twin targets of investment and jobs that the agreement carries.

Q2.InternationalMedium

How much investment is the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement expected to bring into India over the following 15 years?

  1. A.50 billion dollars
  2. B.75 billion dollars
  3. C.100 billion dollars
  4. D.250 billion dollars
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 100 billion dollars

Explanation

The correct answer is 100 billion dollars. The agreement is described as an ambitious blueprint for investment, innovation, jobs and shared prosperity, and the two sides expect it to deliver investment of 100 billion dollars in India together with 10 lakh direct jobs across a span of 15 years. These two numbers, the money and the jobs, are the pair most often asked about the pact, so they should be learnt together. Option A, 50 billion dollars, is half the figure and is incorrect. Option B, 75 billion dollars, does not appear in the summit statement at all. Option D, 250 billion dollars, overstates the commitment by a wide margin. Note also that the figure is an investment target over a defined period and not a one-time inflow, and that the jobs promised are direct jobs rather than total employment of every kind.

Q3.InternationalMedium

Which of the following was NOT among the agreements announced during the Swiss President’s visit to India?

  1. A.Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement
  2. B.Young Professionals Agreement
  3. C.Agreement on transport, mobility and infrastructure
  4. D.Agreement on a common currency swap window
Show answer

Correct answer: D. Agreement on a common currency swap window

Explanation

The correct answer is the agreement on a common currency swap window, because no such pact was announced. The summit produced an agreement on transport, mobility and infrastructure, which builds on Swiss involvement in the Varanasi ropeway, the Jewar airport at Noida and railway and tunnelling work in hill areas, so option C was indeed signed. A Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement was also concluded, which makes option A a genuine outcome. A Young Professionals Agreement was signed as well, opening fresh opportunities in Switzerland for Indian students, researchers and professionals, so option B is real too. Alongside these, a tie-up with Zurich University was welcomed for building the capacity of Indian science start-ups. Questions of this kind usually test whether a candidate can separate the pacts actually announced from plausible-sounding additions, so the list of three agreements plus the university tie-up is worth memorising as a set.

Q4.InternationalMedium

Which city will host the artificial intelligence summit that Switzerland is to organise next year?

  1. A.Zurich
  2. B.Bern
  3. C.Geneva
  4. D.Davos
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Geneva

Explanation

The correct answer is Geneva. India noted that it had hosted the world’s largest artificial intelligence summit in February this year, and said Switzerland would carry that journey forward through the Geneva AI Summit next year, with both countries committed to making artificial intelligence responsible, inclusive and human-centric. Option A, Zurich, is a distractor drawn from the separate Zurich University agreement on building the capacity of Indian science start-ups, which is a different outcome of the same summit. Option B, Bern, is the Swiss capital but was not named as the venue. Option D, Davos, is well known for the annual World Economic Forum meeting and is an attractive wrong choice for that reason, but it has nothing to do with this announcement. Candidates should remember the pairing of the Indian AI summit held in February with the Geneva AI Summit due next year.
