RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

RRB ALP GK Questions with Answers

Q181.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2026, GATEasy

The bob of a simple pendulum is displaced from its mean position and then released from rest 0.20 m above its mean position. What is the speed of the bob as it passes through the mean position? (Take g = 10 m/s²)

  1. A.0 m/s
  2. B.1 m/s
  3. C.2 m/s
  4. D.√10 m/s
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 2 m/s

All the potential energy at the top turns into kinetic energy at the mean position, so v = √(2gh) = √(2 × 10 × 0.20) = 2 m/s. When the bob is released from rest at height h, it has potential energy mgh and no kinetic energy.

Q183.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2019, GATMedium

A thin disc and a thin ring, both have mass M and radius R. Both rotate about axes through their center of mass and are perpendicular to their surfaces at the same angular velocity. Which of the following is true?

  1. A.The ring has higher kinetic energy
  2. B.The disc has higher kinetic energy
  3. C.The ring and the disc have the same kinetic energy
  4. D.Kinetic energies of both the bodies are zero since they are not in linear motion
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The ring has higher kinetic energy

Rotational kinetic energy is ½Iω², and the ring has the larger moment of inertia. For a thin ring about the axis through its centre and perpendicular to its plane, all the mass sits at distance R, so I = MR².

Q186.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2026, GATHard

A pendulum of length L oscillates with an angular amplitude of θ = 60° and time period T. Let T₀ = 2π√(L/g) be the time period for small angle of oscillations, where g is the acceleration due to gravity. If air resistance is negligibly small and the string remains straight, then which one of the following is correct?

  1. A.T will be slightly greater than T₀.
  2. B.T will be slightly smaller than T₀.
  3. C.T will be exactly equal to T₀.
  4. D.T will depend upon the mass of the bob.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. T will be slightly greater than T₀.

The formula T₀ = 2π√(L/g) holds only for small swings; at large amplitudes the period grows.

Q187.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2026, GATMedium

A bicycle racing track is a level circular road of radius 10 m. Three cyclists P, Q and R with identical cycles are cycling on the track with speeds 2 m/s, 3 m/s and 5 m/s respectively. If the coefficient of friction between the tyres and the road is 0.1, then which cyclist will slip? (Take g = 10 m/s²)

  1. A.P only
  2. B.Q only
  3. C.R only
  4. D.All will slip
Show answer
Correct answer: C. R only

On a level curve, friction alone supplies the centripetal force, so a cyclist slips when the needed force exceeds the maximum friction.

Q188.General ScienceAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2018, Paper IHard

Which of the following statements about optical microscope is/are correct? 1. Both the eyepiece and objective of a microscope are convex lenses. 2. The magnification of a microscope increases with increase in focal length of the objective. 3. The magnification of a microscope depends upon the length of the microscope tube. 4. The eyepiece of a microscope is a concave lens. Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. A.1 and 3
  2. B.3 only
  3. C.3 and 4
  4. D.1,2 and 4
Show answer
Correct answer: A. 1 and 3

A compound microscope uses two convex lenses, and its magnification depends on the tube length. The objective is a convex lens of very short focal length that forms a real, enlarged image of the specimen.

Q189.General ScienceAsked in: UPSC CAPF · CAPF 2021, Paper IMedium

An object is placed 10 cm in front of a lens. The image formed is real, inverted and of same size as the object. What is the focal length and nature of the lens?

  1. A.5 cm, converging
  2. B.10 cm, diverging
  3. C.20 cm, converging
  4. D.20 cm, diverging
Show answer
Correct answer: A. 5 cm, converging

A real, inverted image of the same size forms only when the object sits at twice the focal length of a convex lens, so 2f = 10 cm and f = 5 cm.

Q193.General ScienceMedium

The electrolyte used in a lead-acid storage battery is

  1. A.dilute sulphuric acid
  2. B.concentrated nitric acid
  3. C.a paste of ammonium chloride
  4. D.potassium hydroxide solution
Show answer
Correct answer: A. dilute sulphuric acid

The lead-acid cell has a spongy lead negative plate and a lead dioxide positive plate dipped in dilute sulphuric acid, and as the cell discharges both plates turn to lead sulphate while the acid becomes weaker, which is why its state of charge can be judged from the specific gravity…

Q194.General ScienceMedium

In a common dry cell, the anode is made of

  1. A.copper
  2. B.graphite
  3. C.zinc
  4. D.manganese dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: C. zinc

In the Leclanche dry cell the outer container itself is made of zinc and acts as the anode, being oxidised to zinc ions as the cell works, which is why an old cell often leaks when the container is eaten through.

Q195.General ScienceEasy

Which of the following is a secondary cell?

  1. A.Dry cell
  2. B.Lead-acid cell
  3. C.Daniell cell
  4. D.Mercury button cell
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Lead-acid cell

Its reaction is reversible, so passing a current through it in the opposite direction converts the products back into lead and lead dioxide and the cell can be used again; such a cell is called a secondary or storage cell, and the car battery is the common example.

Q196.General ScienceMedium

In the electrolysis of brine, that is a concentrated solution of common salt, the gas liberated at the anode is

  1. A.hydrogen
  2. B.oxygen
  3. C.chlorine
  4. D.carbon dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: C. chlorine

In the chlor-alkali process a concentrated solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed; chloride ions are oxidised at the anode and come off as chlorine gas, hydrogen is set free at the cathode, and sodium hydroxide remains in the solution, which is why the industry yields three useful products at once.

Q198.General ScienceMedium

The quantity of electricity known as one faraday is approximately

  1. A.9,650 coulombs
  2. B.96,500 coulombs
  3. C.1,600 coulombs
  4. D.6,023 coulombs
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 96,500 coulombs

One faraday is the charge carried by one mole of electrons, obtained by multiplying the charge on a single electron by the Avogadro number, and it comes to about 96,500 coulombs; passing one faraday through an electrolyte liberates one gram equivalent of the substance at an electrode.
