Sports Leagues of India: Pro Kabaddi, ISL and IPL Facts
Exam notes on India's franchise sports leagues: the founding year, sport, organiser and first champion of the IPL, WPL, Pro Kabaddi, ISL, HIL and more.

A franchise league is a professional competition in which city-based teams are owned by private investors, players are bought at an auction or a draft, and the matches are sold as a television product in a short season. India's first such league in cricket changed the economics of the sport so completely that every other federation copied the model, and a decade of new leagues followed. Examiners ask the founding year of each league, the sport it belongs to, the body that runs it and the team that won the first season, so those four facts are the heart of this note.
Cricket: the Indian Premier League and the Women's Premier League
The Indian Premier League is a Twenty20 competition founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2007, with its first season played in 2008. Lalit Modi was its first chairman and commissioner. The inaugural title went to Rajasthan Royals, captained by the Australian spin bowler Shane Warne, who beat Chennai Super Kings in the final at Mumbai. The league introduced the player auction, the strategic time-out and the orange and purple caps for the leading run scorer and the leading wicket taker of a season. The Women's Premier League followed in 2023, again under the BCCI, and its first title was won by Mumbai Indians. Keep these franchise leagues apart from India's older domestic tournaments, which are played between state and zonal teams and not between privately owned franchises: the Ranji Trophy of 1934-35 for first-class cricket, the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup, the Vijay Hazare Trophy for one-day cricket and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Twenty20.
Kabaddi and kho kho
The Pro Kabaddi League began in 2014, run by Mashal Sports with the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India, and it is the league that proved an indigenous sport could hold a television audience. The first season was won by Jaipur Pink Panthers. The league standardised the raid clock, the do-or-die raid and the bonus point for the viewer, and it pushed kabaddi players into national prominence for the first time since the Asian Games. Ultimate Kho Kho, launched in 2022 as the first franchise league for kho kho, was won in its first season by the Odisha Juggernauts. Both leagues matter in general knowledge papers because they are the examples of traditional Indian sports turned professional.
Football, hockey and the rest
| League | Sport | First season | First champion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian Premier League (IPL) | Cricket (T20) | 2008 | Rajasthan Royals |
| Hockey India League (HIL) | Field hockey | 2013 | Ranchi Rhinos |
| Indian Badminton League, renamed Premier Badminton League in 2016 | Badminton | 2013 | Hyderabad Hotshots |
| Indian Super League (ISL) | Football | 2014 | Atletico de Kolkata |
| Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) | Kabaddi | 2014 | Jaipur Pink Panthers |
| Pro Wrestling League (PWL) | Wrestling | 2015 | Mumbai Garuda |
| Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) | Table tennis | 2017 | - |
| Pro Volleyball League | Volleyball | 2019 | Chennai Spartans |
| Ultimate Kho Kho | Kho kho | 2022 | Odisha Juggernauts |
| Women's Premier League (WPL) | Cricket (T20) | 2023 | Mumbai Indians |
In football the Indian Super League was launched in 2014 with franchises in eight cities, and Atletico de Kolkata won the first final. The older national competition is the I-League, which began in 2007 as the successor to the National Football League of 1996, and the All India Football Federation is the governing body for both. From the 2019-20 season the federation recognised the Indian Super League as the country's top division, with the I-League placed below it. Indian football also has knockout tournaments far older than any league: the Durand Cup, first played in 1888 and the oldest football tournament in Asia, the Santosh Trophy for state teams from 1941, and the IFA Shield and Rovers Cup from the nineteenth century.
What a league is made of
- Franchises are bought for a fixed term and carry a city name, so a team can move or be replaced without the league ending.
- Players are allotted by auction, as in the IPL, or by a draft, as in the Pro Kabaddi League, within a salary purse set by the organisers.
- A salary cap and a limit on foreign players keep the competition even and protect places for Indian players.
- Most leagues run a double round robin followed by playoffs, and the IPL uses the four-team playoff with a qualifier, an eliminator and a second qualifier.
- Revenue comes from media rights, title sponsorship, gate receipts and merchandise, shared between the league and the franchises.
Why examiners like this chapter
Every league gives a clean one-mark question. The commonest forms are the sport of a named league, the year a league started, the winner of its first season and the city a franchise represents. A second family of questions tests whether a candidate can tell a franchise league from a federation tournament, which is why the Ranji Trophy, the Santosh Trophy and the Durand Cup appear as distractors among league names. Avoid learning current champions and points tables, which change every year; learn instead the founding facts, which do not.
Exam Point of View
The question is almost always one of four kinds: which sport a named league belongs to, the year a league started, who won its first season, or which city a franchise represents. A second kind asks you to pick the odd one out, placing a federation tournament such as the Ranji Trophy, the Santosh Trophy or the Durand Cup among franchise league names. Pairs that are deliberately confused include 2007 (IPL founded) against 2008 (first season played), 2013 (Hockey India League and Indian Badminton League) against 2014 (ISL and Pro Kabaddi League), and World Series Hockey of 2012 against the Hockey India League of 2013. Learn founding years and first champions, which are fixed, and leave current champions and points tables alone.

Practice MCQs on this topic
The first season of the Indian Premier League was played in which year?
- A.2007
- B.2008
- C.2010
- D.2012
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, 2008. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the Twenty20 league in 2007 and the first season was played in 2008, with Lalit Modi as the first chairman and commissioner. Option A is wrong, though it is the most tempting choice: 2007 is the year the league was founded and announced, and also the year India won the first ICC World Twenty20, but no IPL match was played in it. Option C is wrong because 2010 was the third season, held in India after the second season had been shifted to South Africa in 2009 because of the general election. Option D is wrong because 2012 was the fifth season, won by Kolkata Knight Riders. Read the stem carefully: a question about the founding year and a question about the first season played have different answers.
Which team won the first season of the Indian Premier League?
- A.Chennai Super Kings
- B.Mumbai Indians
- C.Rajasthan Royals
- D.Deccan Chargers
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is C, Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals, led by the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne, won the 2008 final against Chennai Super Kings at the Dr D. Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and they remain the only team to win the title in the league's first attempt with the smallest purse of that season. Option A is wrong because Chennai Super Kings were the beaten finalists in 2008 and won their first title in 2010. Option B is wrong because Mumbai Indians did not reach the 2008 final and took their first title in 2013. Option D is wrong because Deccan Chargers finished last in 2008 and then won the second season in 2009 in South Africa, a reversal examiners enjoy turning into a question. Remember the pair: Rajasthan Royals in 2008, Deccan Chargers in 2009.
The Pro Kabaddi League was started in which year?
- A.2008
- B.2013
- C.2014
- D.2017
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is C, 2014. The Pro Kabaddi League began in 2014, organised by Mashal Sports along with the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India, and it was built deliberately on the franchise model of the IPL, with city teams, a player auction and a television contract. Option A is wrong because 2008 is the year of the first IPL season, not of the kabaddi league. Option B is wrong because 2013 is the year the Hockey India League and the Indian Badminton League began, so it is the natural trap in this question. Option D is wrong because 2017 is the year Ultimate Table Tennis started. The first Pro Kabaddi season was won by Jaipur Pink Panthers, and the league is credited with turning an indigenous rural sport into a television property that reached a mass audience.
Which team won the first season of the Pro Kabaddi League?
- A.U Mumba
- B.Jaipur Pink Panthers
- C.Patna Pirates
- D.Bengaluru Bulls
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Jaipur Pink Panthers. Jaipur Pink Panthers won the inaugural Pro Kabaddi League final of 2014 against U Mumba, and the team's association with a film star owner gave the new league much of its early publicity. Option A is wrong because U Mumba were the beaten finalists in the first season and won the title in the second season. Option C is wrong because Patna Pirates became champions later and are remembered for a run of consecutive titles, not for the first season. Option D is wrong because Bengaluru Bulls won their first title several seasons after the league began. The safe way to handle kabaddi questions is to learn the first season's winner and runner-up, which never change, rather than the current champion, which does.
The Indian Super League is a franchise league associated with which sport?
- A.Hockey
- B.Football
- C.Volleyball
- D.Basketball
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, football. The Indian Super League was launched in 2014 with franchises in eight cities and is run under the All India Football Federation, which from the 2019-20 season recognised it as the country's top football division, with the I-League below it. Option A is wrong because the hockey franchise league is the Hockey India League, which began in 2013 and was preceded by World Series Hockey. Option C is wrong because volleyball has the Pro Volleyball League, started in 2019, and later the Prime Volleyball League. Option D is wrong because basketball has had the UBA Pro Basketball League and other short-lived competitions, not the ISL. Also remember that India's oldest football tournaments are knockout cups rather than leagues: the Durand Cup of 1888 and the Santosh Trophy of 1941.
Which club won the first edition of the Indian Super League in 2014?
- A.Kerala Blasters
- B.Atletico de Kolkata
- C.Bengaluru FC
- D.FC Goa
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Atletico de Kolkata. The Kolkata franchise, then partnered with the Spanish club Atletico Madrid, beat Kerala Blasters in the 2014 final with a goal in stoppage time, and the club was later renamed ATK. Option A is wrong because Kerala Blasters were the runners-up in that first final, which makes them the standard distractor. Option C is wrong because Bengaluru FC was founded in 2013 and played in the I-League first, entering the Indian Super League only from the 2017-18 season. Option D is wrong because FC Goa reached the semi-finals in the first season and won the league title later. The useful fact to carry into the exam hall is the first final itself: Atletico de Kolkata against Kerala Blasters, in 2014.
The Women's Premier League, the franchise Twenty20 league run by the BCCI, began in which year?
- A.2018
- B.2021
- C.2023
- D.2024
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is C, 2023. The Board of Control for Cricket in India launched the Women's Premier League in 2023 with five franchises, and Mumbai Indians won the first final against Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Option A is wrong because 2018 belongs to the earlier Women's T20 Challenge, a short exhibition tournament of three teams played alongside the IPL playoffs, which the WPL replaced. Option B is wrong because 2021 saw no new BCCI franchise league for women. Option D is wrong because 2024 was the second season of the WPL, part of which was played at Bengaluru. The question is worth attention because papers often ask which earlier competition the Women's Premier League replaced, and the answer is the Women's T20 Challenge.
Ultimate Kho Kho, India's first franchise league for kho kho, was launched in:
- A.2016
- B.2019
- C.2022
- D.2024
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is C, 2022. Ultimate Kho Kho was launched in 2022 as the first franchise league for kho kho, and the Odisha Juggernauts won the inaugural season. The league introduced mats instead of mud courts, a dream run and attack and defence points, so that a traditional school-ground game could be televised. Option A is wrong because 2016 is the year the Indian Badminton League was renamed the Premier Badminton League and the year Premier Futsal was launched. Option B is wrong because 2019 is the year the Pro Volleyball League started, won in its first season by Chennai Spartans. Option D is wrong because 2024 was a later season rather than the launch. Kho kho and kabaddi questions usually come together, so remember 2014 for the Pro Kabaddi League and 2022 for Ultimate Kho Kho.
Which team won the first season of the Hockey India League in 2013?
- A.Delhi Waveriders
- B.Ranchi Rhinos
- C.Punjab Warriors
- D.Uttar Pradesh Wizards
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, Ranchi Rhinos. The Hockey India League began in 2013 under Hockey India, and Ranchi Rhinos won the first final; the league was notable for buying the world's best players at auction and for bringing international hockey to Indian cities for several weeks each winter. Option A is wrong because Delhi Waveriders were runners-up in the first season and took the title in a later edition. Option C is wrong because the Punjab franchise, which played as Jaypee Punjab Warriors, won the league later, not in 2013. Option D is wrong because Uttar Pradesh Wizards never won the first season. Note the related trap: World Series Hockey, a rival competition, was played in 2012, a year before the Hockey India League, and the two are often swapped in question papers.
Which of the following is NOT a franchise-based league but a domestic tournament played between state or zonal teams?
- A.Pro Kabaddi League
- B.Ranji Trophy
- C.Premier Badminton League
- D.Ultimate Table Tennis
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is B, the Ranji Trophy. The Ranji Trophy, begun in 1934-35 and named after Ranjitsinhji, is India's premier first-class cricket championship, played between teams representing states and a few institutional sides selected by the BCCI, not between privately owned city franchises. Option A is wrong because the Pro Kabaddi League, from 2014, is a franchise league with city teams bought by investors and players allotted by auction. Option C is wrong because the Premier Badminton League, which began in 2013 as the Indian Badminton League and was renamed in 2016, is also franchise-based. Option D is wrong because Ultimate Table Tennis, from 2017, is likewise a franchise competition. Papers set this question often, using the Duleep Trophy, the Santosh Trophy and the Durand Cup in place of the Ranji Trophy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which was India's first franchise sports league?
The Indian Premier League in cricket. It was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2007 and its first season was played in 2008. Its city franchises, player auction and television deal became the template that kabaddi, football, hockey, badminton, volleyball and kho kho leagues all copied.
Who won the first season of the Pro Kabaddi League?
Jaipur Pink Panthers, who beat U Mumba in the final of the 2014 season. U Mumba went on to win the second season, so the two teams make a useful pair to remember together.
What is the difference between the Indian Super League and the I-League?
Both are national football competitions under the All India Football Federation. The I-League began in 2007 as the successor to the National Football League of 1996 and is contested by clubs. The Indian Super League began in 2014 with city franchises, and from the 2019-20 season the federation recognised it as the top division with the I-League below it.
Which league is associated with badminton in India?
The Premier Badminton League. It started in 2013 as the Indian Badminton League, with Hyderabad Hotshots winning the first title, and it was renamed the Premier Badminton League in 2016.
Is the Ranji Trophy a franchise league?
No. The Ranji Trophy, played since 1934-35, is India's first-class cricket championship between teams representing states and a few institutional sides. Franchise leagues such as the IPL and the Women's Premier League have privately owned city teams and a player auction, which the Ranji Trophy does not.
Which franchise leagues cover traditional Indian sports?
The Pro Kabaddi League, started in 2014, and Ultimate Kho Kho, started in 2022. Both took a sport played on mud and school grounds, standardised its rules for television, and built city franchises around it.
