Domestic Cricket and the IPL: Trophies and Facts — GK24 title card

Indian domestic cricket is a reliable one-mark topic. SSC, Railway, Banking and State papers rarely ask who won last season, because that answer changes; what they ask is which trophy belongs to which format, after whom it is named, in which year it began and who takes part in it. The Indian Premier League is treated the same way, with the questions settling on the first season of 2008 and the names that went with it. This note therefore fixes the trophies, the formats and the founding facts, which do not move.

The three tiers of the domestic season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, founded in 1928 with its headquarters in Mumbai, runs the domestic season on three levels, one for each format of the game.

The Ranji Trophy is the oldest and the most important. It is named after Ranjitsinhji, the prince of Nawanagar who played for Sussex and for England and was among the first Indians to be counted a great batsman; the trophy itself was donated by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. The first season was 1934-35 and Bombay were the first champions. Mumbai has won it far more often than any other side, and the competition remains the recognised road into the Test team. The Irani Cup was begun in 1959-60 to mark the twenty-fifth year of the Ranji Trophy and has a neat design: the reigning Ranji champion plays a single match against a Rest of India side picked from everyone else. The Duleep Trophy, named after Ranjitsinhji s nephew Duleepsinhji, began in 1961-62 as a knockout between the five zones, North, South, East, West and Central, and has since been played between selected India sides as well.

Two records from this competition are worth carrying. Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad put on 577 for Baroda against Holkar in the Ranji final of 1946-47, a partnership that stood as a world record for decades. C. K. Nayudu, who led India in the country s first Test match at Lord s in 1932, gave his name to the under-23 championship, and D. B. Deodhar, long called the grand old man of Indian cricket, to the one-day tournament.

The Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League was announced by the Board in 2007 and its first season was played in 2008, with Lalit Modi as its first chairman and commissioner. It is a Twenty20 league of city franchises, run by a Governing Council of the Board, and the players are bought at an auction. Eight teams took the field in that first season: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad.

  • The first match was played on 18 April 2008 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Brendon McCullum made 158 not out for Kolkata, the first century of the league.
  • Rajasthan Royals, captained by Shane Warne, won that first title, beating Chennai Super Kings in the final.
  • At the first auction, in early 2008, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the costliest buy and went to Chennai Super Kings.
  • The Orange Cap is worn by the leading run-scorer of a season and the Purple Cap by the leading wicket-taker.
  • The league has twice been moved abroad in full: to South Africa in 2009, because of the general election in India, and to the United Arab Emirates in 2020; part of the 2014 season was also played in the Emirates.
  • The Women s Premier League, the Twenty20 league for women run on the same model, began in 2023, and Mumbai Indians won its first season.

One distinction is worth holding clearly for the exam. A franchise league such as the Indian Premier League is owned by private teams that buy players at auction, while the Ranji Trophy and the other Board trophies are played by state and regional associations with players who qualify by domicile. A cricketer therefore represents a state in the Ranji Trophy and a city franchise in the league, and a strong Ranji season is still the usual way into both.

Exam Point of View

Papers test this chapter as trophy-and-format matching, which is why it is worth tabulating. The questions asked most often are which tournament is first-class and which is one-day or Twenty20, after whom the Ranji, Duleep, Irani, Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali trophies are named, the starting year of the Ranji Trophy and of the IPL, and who the two sides in the Irani Cup are. On the IPL side the set answers are 2008 for the first season, Rajasthan Royals as the first champions, Shane Warne as their captain, Brendon McCullum for the first century and South Africa for the 2009 season. The common traps are confusing Ranjitsinhji with Duleepsinhji, calling the Vijay Hazare Trophy a Twenty20 event, and swapping the Orange Cap for the Purple Cap.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Sports GKEasy

The Ranji Trophy, India s premier first-class cricket tournament, is named after

  1. A.Duleepsinhji
  2. B.Ranjitsinhji
  3. C.Vijay Merchant
  4. D.C. K. Nayudu
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ranjitsinhji

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Ranjitsinhji. Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, played for Sussex and for England at the end of the nineteenth century and was among the first cricketers of Indian birth to be ranked with the greatest batsmen of his time. When the Board started a national first-class championship in 1934-35 it named the competition after him, and the trophy itself was presented by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. Option A, Duleepsinhji, was his nephew and also played for Sussex and England; the Duleep Trophy, begun in 1961-62, carries his name, and the two princes are the commonest pair to be confused here. Option C, Vijay Merchant, gives his name to the under-16 championship. Option D, C. K. Nayudu, captained India in her first Test match in 1932 and gives his name to the under-23 championship.

Q2.Sports GKMedium

In which season was the Ranji Trophy first played?

  1. A.1928-29
  2. B.1934-35
  3. C.1947-48
  4. D.1959-60
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 1934-35

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1934-35. The Board of Control for Cricket in India set up a national first-class championship in 1934 and the first season was played in 1934-35, with Bombay winning the title. Option A, 1928-29, is the year the Board itself was founded, in 1928, and is the natural wrong answer for anyone who remembers one date and uses it for the other. Option C, 1947-48, is the season after independence and has no special link with the trophy. Option D, 1959-60, is the year the Irani Cup was started, to mark twenty-five years of the Ranji Trophy, which is itself a useful cross-check: 1934-35 plus twenty-five seasons lands on 1959-60. Keep the sequence in order: the Board in 1928, the Ranji Trophy in 1934-35, the Irani Cup in 1959-60 and the Duleep Trophy in 1961-62.

Q3.Sports GKMedium

The Irani Cup is played between which two sides?

  1. A.North Zone and South Zone
  2. B.The Ranji Trophy champion and a Rest of India side
  3. C.India Blue and India Red
  4. D.The winners of the Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali trophies
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The Ranji Trophy champion and a Rest of India side

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the Ranji Trophy champion and a Rest of India side. The Irani Cup is a single first-class match in which the team that has just won the Ranji Trophy meets a Rest of India eleven drawn from all the other state teams, and a good performance in it has long been treated as a step towards national selection. It was begun in 1959-60 to mark twenty-five years of the Ranji Trophy and is named after Z. R. Irani, a patron of the Board. Option A describes the zonal format in which the Duleep Trophy was originally played, between North, South, East, West and Central Zone. Option C names the selected sides used in the Duleep Trophy in later years. Option D is invented; the winners of the one-day and Twenty20 championships do not meet each other, as the two tournaments stand separately.

Q4.Sports GKEasy

Which of the following is the domestic Twenty20 championship of India?

  1. A.Vijay Hazare Trophy
  2. B.Deodhar Trophy
  3. C.Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
  4. D.Duleep Trophy
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Explanation

The correct answer is C, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Begun in 2006-07, soon after Twenty20 became an international format, it is the championship in which the state teams play the twenty-over game, and it is named after Syed Mushtaq Ali of Indore, who was the first Indian to score a Test century abroad. Option A, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is the fifty-over one-day championship for the same state teams and began in 2002-03. Option B, the Deodhar Trophy, is also a one-day tournament, named after D. B. Deodhar and long played between zonal sides. Option D, the Duleep Trophy, is first-class cricket over several days. The set to memorise is three tiers for three formats: the Ranji Trophy for first-class cricket, the Vijay Hazare Trophy for fifty overs and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Twenty20.

Q5.Sports GKHard

The Cooch Behar Trophy in Indian domestic cricket is contested in which age group?

  1. A.Under-16
  2. B.Under-19
  3. C.Under-23
  4. D.Under-25
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Under-19

Explanation

The correct answer is B, under-19. The Cooch Behar Trophy is the multi-day inter-state championship for players under the age of nineteen and is named after the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, an early patron of the game in India. It is the stage on which most Indian Test players are first noticed. Option A, under-16, is the age group of the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Option C, under-23, is the age group of the Col. C. K. Nayudu Trophy, which is the first-class level of age-group cricket and sits just below the senior Ranji Trophy. Option D, under-25, is not an age group the Board runs a national championship for. The ladder worth memorising runs upward in order: the Vijay Merchant Trophy at under-16, the Cooch Behar Trophy at under-19, the Col. C. K. Nayudu Trophy at under-23 and then the Ranji Trophy at senior level.

Q6.Sports GKEasy

The first season of the Indian Premier League was played in which year?

  1. A.2007
  2. B.2008
  3. C.2009
  4. D.2010
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 2008

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 2008. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the league in 2007 and the first season was played from April to June 2008, with Lalit Modi as the first chairman and commissioner and eight city franchises taking part. Option A, 2007, is the year of the announcement and also the year India won the first Twenty20 World Cup, which is why many candidates mark it; the announcement and the first season fall in different years, so the distinction matters. Option C, 2009, is the year of the second season, which was moved to South Africa because the general election in India was held at the same time. Option D, 2010, is the third season. The chain to remember is announcement in 2007, first season and Rajasthan Royals as champions in 2008, and South Africa in 2009.

Q7.Sports GKMedium

Which team won the first edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008?

  1. A.Chennai Super Kings
  2. B.Mumbai Indians
  3. C.Rajasthan Royals
  4. D.Deccan Chargers
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Rajasthan Royals

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals, captained by the Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne and widely regarded as the weakest squad on paper that season, won the first title in 2008 by beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. Option A, Chennai Super Kings, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, were the losing finalists that year, which makes this the most tempting wrong answer. Option B, Mumbai Indians, did not reach the final in the first season. Option D, the Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad, finished at the bottom of the table in 2008 and then won the title in 2009 in South Africa, a reversal worth remembering because the two seasons are often mixed up. The other four teams of that first season were Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Q8.Sports GKMedium

Who scored the first century in the history of the Indian Premier League?

  1. A.Brendon McCullum
  2. B.Virender Sehwag
  3. C.Adam Gilchrist
  4. D.Sanath Jayasuriya
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Brendon McCullum

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Brendon McCullum. In the very first match of the league, on 18 April 2008 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman opened for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore and made 158 not out, which remained one of the highest scores in the competition for years. The innings is credited with winning the new league its first audience. Option B, Virender Sehwag, was the captain of Delhi Daredevils that season and scored heavily, but not the first hundred. Option C, Adam Gilchrist, captained the Deccan Chargers and made a famous century in the second season, in South Africa. Option D, Sanath Jayasuriya, played a celebrated innings for Mumbai Indians in 2008 but after McCullum s. The three facts to hold together are 18 April 2008, Bengaluru and 158 not out.

Q9.Sports GKEasy

In the IPL, the Purple Cap is awarded to

  1. A.the leading run-scorer of the season
  2. B.the leading wicket-taker of the season
  3. C.the best fielder of the season
  4. D.the most valuable player of the season
Show answer
Correct answer: B. the leading wicket-taker of the season

Explanation

The correct answer is B, the leading wicket-taker of the season. The Purple Cap is worn through the season by the bowler who has taken the most wickets so far, passing from one player to another as the matches go on, and the bowler who leads at the end keeps it. Option A describes the Orange Cap, which works in exactly the same way for the batsman with the most runs, and swapping the two caps is the commonest mistake on this question. Option C is wrong because there is no cap for fielding, although the league does give match awards for catches and for the best fielder of a match in some seasons. Option D refers to the most valuable player award, which is decided on a points system covering runs, wickets and impact, and which is not a cap at all. Both caps belong to one season only and do not carry forward.

Q10.Sports GKMedium

The second season of the Indian Premier League, in 2009, was held entirely in which country?

  1. A.United Arab Emirates
  2. B.South Africa
  3. C.England
  4. D.Sri Lanka
Show answer
Correct answer: B. South Africa

Explanation

The correct answer is B, South Africa. The 2009 season coincided with the general election in India, and because the police could not guarantee security for both the polls and the matches, the whole tournament was shifted to South Africa at short notice. The Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad, who had finished last the previous year, won that season. Option A, the United Arab Emirates, hosted the full 2020 season during the coronavirus pandemic and the first part of the 2014 season during another general election, so it is the strongest distractor and the two moves abroad must be kept apart by year. Option C, England, has never hosted an IPL season. Option D, Sri Lanka, hosted part of the Champions League Twenty20 but not a season of the IPL. The pairing to remember is 2009 with South Africa and 2020 with the Emirates.

Q11.Sports GKHard

The record first-class partnership of 577 runs by Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad was made in a Ranji Trophy final for which team?

  1. A.Bombay
  2. B.Baroda
  3. C.Holkar
  4. D.Hyderabad
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Baroda

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Baroda. In the Ranji Trophy final of the 1946-47 season, Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad came together for Baroda against Holkar and put on 577 runs for the fourth wicket, a stand that stood as the highest partnership in first-class cricket anywhere for many years and is still the benchmark figure quoted from Indian domestic cricket. Option C, Holkar, is the side they made the runs against, a princely team from Indore that was among the strongest of that era, so it is the natural trap. Option A, Bombay, is the most successful team in the history of the trophy but had no part in this particular record. Option D, Hyderabad, is unconnected with it. Hazare later gave his name to the domestic fifty-over championship, which is the usual follow-up question in the same paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Ranji Trophy begin and after whom is it named?

The first season was 1934-35. It is named after Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, who played for Sussex and for England and was one of the first Indian-born batsmen to be ranked among the greatest of his time. The trophy itself was presented by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. Bombay won the first championship, and Mumbai has won it far more often than any other team.

Which teams play the Irani Cup?

The Irani Cup is a single first-class match between the team that won the Ranji Trophy in the season just finished and a Rest of India side chosen from all the other state teams. It was started in 1959-60 to mark twenty-five years of the Ranji Trophy and is named after Z. R. Irani, a long-serving patron of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. A place in the Rest of India side is treated as a step towards national selection.

What is the difference between the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy?

They are the same set of state teams playing the three formats of the game. The Ranji Trophy is first-class cricket over several days with two innings a side. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is the fifty-over one-day championship and began in 2002-03. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is the Twenty20 championship and began in 2006-07. Together they make up the main senior domestic season run by the Board.

Who won the first Indian Premier League season?

Rajasthan Royals, captained by the Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, won the first season in 2008, beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. Eight teams played that season: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad. The league had been announced by the Board in 2007 with Lalit Modi as its first chairman.

What are the Orange Cap and the Purple Cap in the IPL?

The Orange Cap is worn by the batsman who has scored the most runs in the season so far, and it passes from player to player as the season goes on until the leader at the end keeps it. The Purple Cap works the same way for the bowler who has taken the most wickets. Both are awarded within a single season and do not carry over to the next one, so the holders change every year.

Why were some IPL seasons played outside India?

The whole of the 2009 season was moved to South Africa because the general election in India was held at the same time and the police could not provide security for both. The 2020 season was played in the United Arab Emirates because of the coronavirus pandemic, and part of the 2014 season was also held in the Emirates during a general election. In each case the league kept its name and format and only the venues changed.
