Why in News

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced on 5 October 2026 that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will inaugurate the 8th Windergy India at the Chennai Trade Centre, held from 7 to 9 October 2026, as India's cumulative wind capacity reaches 58.52 GW.

The eighth edition of Windergy India, the country's biggest wind energy show, will be held from 7 to 9 October 2026 at the Chennai Trade Centre. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Education and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, will inaugurate it on 8 October 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said on 5 October 2026.

Where India's wind sector stands

The ministry set out the numbers that frame the show. India added a record 6.05 GW of wind capacity in the financial year 2025-26. Cumulative installed wind capacity had reached 58.52 GW by August 2026, and another 28 GW is under implementation. The target the sector is working towards is 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030.

Who else will be there

The inaugural session will also have Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, and C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar, Tamil Nadu's Minister for Energy Resources and Law, besides senior officials of the central and state governments and wind industry associations. Global memoranda of understanding will be announced at the opening, key sector reports released, and states that have led in wind energy recognised.

How big the show is

Windergy India 2026 is laid out as a three-day trade fair with a two-day conference, along with technical sessions, round tables, live demonstrations, business-to-business and business-to-government meetings and an academia connect. Around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and some 500 delegates are expected, with country pavilions from Denmark, Germany and Spain.

What the sessions cover

The technology on display runs to next-generation turbine platforms, heavy-duty gearboxes, artificial-intelligence driven operations and maintenance, and offshore wind. Conference tracks will take up policy frameworks, manufacturing competitiveness, repowering strategies and the offshore frontier. Repowering means replacing old, smaller turbines at an existing wind site with modern machines, which lifts generation without needing new land. The event is organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) and PDA Ventures, with support from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Power.

Exam Point of View

Remember the edition (8th), the dates (7 to 9 October 2026), the venue (Chennai Trade Centre), who inaugurates it (Pralhad Joshi), the organisers (IWTMA with PDA Ventures), and the wind figures: 6.05 GW added in 2025-26, 58.52 GW cumulative by August 2026, 28 GW under implementation and the 100 GW by 2030 goal.

Practice Questions

Q1.EnvironmentMedium

What was India's cumulative installed wind power capacity by August 2026?

  1. A.48.52 GW
  2. B.52.85 GW
  3. C.58.52 GW
  4. D.65.20 GW
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 58.52 GW

Explanation

The correct answer is 58.52 GW. That is the cumulative installed wind capacity India had reached by August 2026, according to the figures the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued ahead of Windergy India. In the financial year 2025-26 the country added a record 6.05 GW of wind capacity, and a further 28 GW is under implementation, which is the pipeline that is meant to carry the sector to its goal of 100 GW by 2030. Candidates should keep the three numbers separate: one is the stock already installed, one is the addition in a single year, and one is the capacity still being built. Options A, B and D are near-miss figures designed to catch a candidate who remembers the digits but not their order.

Q2.EnvironmentEasy

Windergy India 2026, the 8th edition of the wind energy show, is being held in which city?

  1. A.New Delhi
  2. B.Chennai
  3. C.Ahmedabad
  4. D.Pune
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Chennai

Explanation

The correct answer is Chennai, where the eighth edition is being held at the Chennai Trade Centre from 7 to 9 October 2026. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi will inaugurate it on 8 October 2026, joined by the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power and by Tamil Nadu's Minister for Energy Resources and Law. The choice of city is not incidental, since Tamil Nadu is one of the states with the longest record in wind generation. The show is organised by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association with PDA Ventures and support from two union ministries, and is expected to draw about 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries. The other cities listed are not the venue.

Q3.EnvironmentMedium

How much wind capacity did India add in the financial year 2025-26?

  1. A.3.45 GW
  2. B.4.15 GW
  3. C.6.05 GW
  4. D.8.60 GW
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 6.05 GW

Explanation

The correct answer is 6.05 GW, described by the ministry as a record annual addition for wind power in India. With that year's addition counted in, cumulative wind capacity stood at 58.52 GW by August 2026, and 28 GW more is under implementation towards the goal of reaching 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030. Options A, B and D are not figures from this announcement. The distinction that examiners like to test here is between the annual addition and the cumulative total, so it is worth memorising the pair together with the year each belongs to. The announcement came ahead of Windergy India 2026, where global memoranda of understanding are to be signed and leading states in the wind sector recognised.
