Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan addressed the second convocation of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University at the Qutub Institutional Area in New Delhi. He gave away gold medals to the meritorious students who were graduating and led those present in taking a pledge against drugs.
What he said about the university
Tracing the institution from a Sanskrit Vidyapeetha to a Central University, the Vice-President said the time had come for it to stand as a leading international centre of excellence in Sanskrit studies, which was the vision of its founder, former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He recalled that Shastri’s call of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan was not a slogan alone but a statement of the country’s resolve to guard its borders and feed its people. He praised the university for earning the highest NAAC grade, A++, for its 44-year tradition of bringing out the Vidyapeeth Panchang, and for teaching Prakrit and Vastu Shastra along with other classical subjects.
Sanskrit and the knowledge tradition
Calling Sanskrit the golden string that threads the pearls of India’s many languages into one garland, the Vice-President said India’s development must stay rooted in its civilisational heritage. He referred to the National Education Policy 2020 and the Ashtadashi scheme and said rare Sanskrit texts must not be allowed to vanish. He urged teachers and students to find, preserve, critically edit and publish Sanskrit manuscripts that have never been printed, and spoke of the Gyan Bharatam Mission, which carries a foundational corpus of Rs 500 crore for preserving and documenting manuscripts.
His advice to the students
He asked the graduating students to remain learners for life, to use technology, including artificial intelligence, for keeping Sanskrit alive, to stay away from drugs and to use social media with moderation, giving their time instead to reading, skills and real relationships.
Released at the ceremony

Among those present were Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and for Development of the North Eastern Region, and Prof. Murli Manohar Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of the university, besides scholars, Acharyas, faculty members, students and parents.

Practice Questions
Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University holds which NAAC grade?
- A.A
- B.A+
- C.A++
- D.B++
Show answer
Correct answer: C. A++
Explanation
The correct answer is A++, which is the highest grade the National Assessment and Accreditation Council awards. The Vice-President praised the university for securing it and for carrying out research across the many domains of the Indian knowledge tradition, and he urged the institution to go further and become a leading international centre of excellence for Sanskrit studies. Options A and B are wrong because each names a lower rung of the same scale, and a candidate who recalls only that the grade begins with the letter A will not be able to separate them. Option D is wrong because it belongs to a different band altogether. Alongside the grade, remember the university’s other distinctions mentioned on the occasion, among them the publication of the Vidyapeeth Panchang for forty-four years and the teaching of Prakrit and Vastu Shastra.
The Gyan Bharatam Mission, mentioned at the convocation, has a foundational corpus of how much?
- A.Rs 100 crore
- B.Rs 250 crore
- C.Rs 500 crore
- D.Rs 1,000 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Rs 500 crore
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 500 crore. The mission is meant to preserve and document India’s manuscript heritage and to bring it within reach of readers in the country and abroad, and the Vice-President cited it while asking teachers and students to seek out unpublished Sanskrit manuscripts, preserve them, edit them critically and publish them. Options A, B and D are wrong because none of those sums has been announced for the mission; they are the kind of round figures a candidate guesses at when the actual number has slipped. Keep this corpus separate in your mind from the other initiatives named in the same address, the National Education Policy 2020 and the Ashtadashi scheme, neither of which was given a figure here.
Who is remembered as the founder whose vision shaped Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University?
- A.Jawaharlal Nehru
- B.Lal Bahadur Shastri
- C.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
- D.Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Lal Bahadur Shastri
Explanation
The correct answer is Lal Bahadur Shastri, the former Prime Minister after whom the university is named. The Vice-President traced the institution’s journey from a Sanskrit Vidyapeetha to a Central University and said the time had come for it to fulfil its founder’s vision by establishing itself as a leading international centre for Sanskrit studies. He also paid tribute to Shastri, saying that the call of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan expressed the country’s determination to protect its borders and secure its food. Option A is wrong because, although the first Prime Minister founded many institutions, this one does not carry his name or his vision. Option C names a former President and philosopher and option D a former Education Minister; neither is connected with the founding of this university.
