Vice President Launches India Valve Registry in Chennai

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched the India Valve Registry on 5 September 2026. He did so at India Valves 2026 in Chennai. India Valves 2026 is a national academic meeting on the treatment of valvular and structural heart disease.

What the registry does

The registry is a collaborative multicentre effort. It will collect real-world data on transcatheter valve interventions from across India. The collection is systematic, secure and de-identified. Its aim is to build India-specific clinical evidence and to improve patient care. The Vice President said a registry records who underwent a heart valve intervention, what treatment they received and how they fared over time. In that way, he said, individual clinical experience turns into shared medical knowledge.

Why India needs its own data

The Vice President stressed the value of India-specific clinical evidence. He noted that several countries already run national registries for advanced valve interventions and other cardiovascular procedures. Such registries, he said, create our country's own data for our own countrymen. They help doctors understand outcomes, find gaps, learn from experience and treat better.

He said healthcare is a human right and must be accessible to everyone. Every advance in medical science, he added, brings a duty to make its benefits inclusive. He recalled that India developed vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic for its own people and also supplied them to around 100 countries. Turning to the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, he said a developed India must also be a Swasth Bharat.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare K. G. Arunraj attended the event. Leading cardiologists were present too, among them Dr G. Sengottuvelu of Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, Dr Ashok Seth of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi and Dr Praveen Chandra of Medanta in Gurugram. Cardiac surgeons, researchers and members of the organising committee also took part.
