Swachhta Udyami Yojana and NFSC: Three Scheme Case Studies

Why in News

On 5 October 2026 the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment released three beneficiary accounts showing the working of the Swachhta Udyami Yojana, the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste and the NSFDC Electric Auto-Rickshaw Subsidy Scheme, 2024, with the amounts paid in each case.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment put out three beneficiary accounts on 5 October 2026, each showing what one of its schemes paid for and what changed afterwards. Together they cover a livelihood scheme, a research fellowship and a vehicle subsidy.

Swachhta Udyami Yojana: a waste picker buys a machine

Mekala Nancharamma, 30, of the Scheduled Tribe community, had picked waste in the Guntur Municipal Corporation area for about 12 years and had never been to school. Under the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY), routed through the Navajeevan Organisation, a two-member group project financed a tractor-mounted Open Nallah Cleaner. The project cost Rs 16,99,952, made up of a loan of Rs 10,24,964 and a capital subsidy of Rs 6,74,988. The machine earns her an extra Rs 10,000 a month, taking her monthly income from about Rs 8,000 to around Rs 18,000.

National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste: a PhD completed

Pratibha Rani, 35, of Faridabad in Haryana, received support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste (NFSC) from September 2019. The award covered the fellowship itself, house rent allowance and contingency expenses, and came to about Rs 18 lakh over its term, which carried her through a doctorate. She later joined a project at the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi on Rs 43,000 a month for a year. Alongside her studies she has taught underprivileged children for around 12 years.

NSFDC subsidy: an electric auto-rickshaw

Durgesh Barkhane of Junardev in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, was selected under the NSFDC Electric Auto-Rickshaw Subsidy Scheme, 2024 and received Rs 1,85,000. He had no steady income before this; the vehicle gave him a livelihood and a way to support his family.

Why the three matter for exams

The accounts are a reminder of which body runs what. The Swachhta Udyami Yojana funds mechanised sanitation equipment for people engaged in waste work, pairing a bank loan with a capital subsidy so that a worker can own the machine. The NFSC pays for doctoral research by Scheduled Caste scholars, and the fellowship, house rent allowance and contingency heads are the three parts of the award. The National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation, or NSFDC, runs credit-linked subsidy schemes for self-employment, including the electric auto-rickshaw scheme notified in 2024.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesMedium

The Swachhta Udyami Yojana provides assistance mainly for which purpose?

  1. A.Scholarships for sanitation workers' children
  2. B.Purchase of mechanised sanitation equipment for self-employment
  3. C.Construction of household toilets
  4. D.Pension for retired municipal staff
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Purchase of mechanised sanitation equipment for self-employment

Explanation

The correct answer is the purchase of mechanised sanitation equipment for self-employment. The case released by the ministry shows how it works: a two-member group project under the scheme financed a tractor-mounted Open Nallah Cleaner at a total cost of Rs 16,99,952, with a loan of Rs 10,24,964 and a capital subsidy of Rs 6,74,988. The beneficiary, who had picked waste for about twelve years in Guntur, moved to an organised livelihood with the machine and saw her monthly income rise from about Rs 8,000 to around Rs 18,000. Option C belongs to a different sanitation programme altogether, while options A and D describe kinds of support not covered by this scheme. The structure to remember is a loan plus a capital subsidy for equipment ownership.

Q2.Government SchemesMedium

Which three heads make up the award under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste?

  1. A.Fellowship, house rent allowance and contingency
  2. B.Tuition fee, hostel fee and books grant
  3. C.Stipend, travel grant and thesis grant
  4. D.Fellowship, medical allowance and laptop grant
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Fellowship, house rent allowance and contingency

Explanation

The correct answer is fellowship, house rent allowance and contingency. These are the three components named in the beneficiary account of a scholar from Faridabad in Haryana whose assistance began in September 2019 and came to about Rs 18 lakh, funding her doctorate. She afterwards joined a project at the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi at Rs 43,000 a month for a year. The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste exists to pay for doctoral research by Scheduled Caste scholars, which is why its heads cover living costs rather than school-level expenses. Options B, C and D list components that belong to other kinds of scholarship or are simply invented, so a candidate who remembers only the word fellowship could be led astray by them.

Q3.Government SchemesEasy

Under which scheme did a beneficiary from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, receive assistance of Rs 1,85,000?

  1. A.Swachhta Udyami Yojana
  2. B.National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste
  3. C.NSFDC Electric Auto-Rickshaw Subsidy Scheme, 2024
  4. D.Stand Up India Scheme
Show answer

Correct answer: C. NSFDC Electric Auto-Rickshaw Subsidy Scheme, 2024

Explanation

The correct answer is the NSFDC Electric Auto-Rickshaw Subsidy Scheme, 2024. A resident of Junardev in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, was selected under it and received financial assistance of Rs 1,85,000, which let him acquire an auto-rickshaw and earn a living where he had no steady income before. The scheme is run by the National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation, which offers credit-linked subsidy support for self-employment. Option A funds mechanised sanitation equipment and option B pays for doctoral research, both named in the same set of beneficiary accounts but for different purposes. Option D is a separate national credit scheme not involved here. Candidates should tie each amount to its scheme, since all three cases were issued on the same day.
