PMAY-Urban 2.0 Sanctions Reach 18.77 Lakh Houses at 9th CSMC

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has cleared more houses for the urban poor. Total sanctions under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban 2.0 now stand at 18.77 lakh houses. The decision came at the 9th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee. Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, chaired it in New Delhi on 10 September 2026.

What the meeting cleared

Over 29,000 houses were approved at this meeting. They fall under two verticals of the scheme, Beneficiary Led Construction and Affordable Housing in Partnership. Six states are covered by these approvals. They are Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh. The Secretary said the committee will now meet in the second week of every month so that progress is watched regularly. States were asked to send duly approved projects by the end of each month.

How the scheme works

The scheme serves urban EWS, LIG and MIG families with an annual household income of up to Rs 9 lakh. A beneficiary may build a pucca house on their own land. A beneficiary may instead buy a house in a project built under the scheme. Affordable rental housing is another route. An interest subsidy on an eligible housing loan is the fourth. Houses sanctioned are held either in the name of the woman of the house or in joint ownership.

The record so far

PMAY-U 2.0 builds on the earlier phase of the mission. Taking PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 together, more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned. Over 1 crore of them have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. With cumulative sanctions under the second phase now nearing the 20 lakh mark, the Ministry says the aim remains a house for every eligible urban family. The emphasis on women's ownership is the part of the design most often tested in examinations, along with the income ceiling and the names of the four verticals.
