The Surat ride

The ride began early in the morning at the Sardar Patel Statue, Mangadh Chowk. Riders first did fitness drills, yoga, zumba and other challenges. They then cycled towards the Sarthana Zoo. The distance covered was 6 km.

Which athletes joined

Several decorated athletes rode along to spread the drug-free message. They included Achanta Sharath Kamal, a Padma Shri awardee who has also won the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Award; Sarita Mor, an Arjuna awardee and a former world number one wrestler; Harmeet Desai, an Arjuna awardee and a Commonwealth Games gold medallist; Shivani Pawar, a silver and gold medallist at the Under-23 World Championships; and Rahul Mann, a Commonwealth Championship and World Cadet Championship gold medallist.

What the Minister said

Dr Mandaviya traced the cycling campaign to the Prime Minister's Fit India movement. A healthy population, he said, is necessary for a developed nation. He listed four gains from cycling: it is effective exercise, it supports the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign, it eases pollution, and it cuts fuel use. He asked people not to keep cycling for Sundays alone but to use it for short trips to work.

The Delhi edition

In the national capital the same edition was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on a special Teachers' Day theme, honouring teachers and coaches. Around a thousand students and fitness enthusiasts took part. Fit India Sundays on Cycle is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Cycling Federation of India, the Raahgiri Foundation and MY Bharat, and over 6000 NAMO Fit India clubs hold the ride every week.

Practice Questions

Q1.SportsEasy

In which city was the 89th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle organised on 6 September 2026?

  1. A.Ahmedabad
  2. B.Surat
  3. C.Vadodara
  4. D.New Delhi
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Surat

Explanation

The correct answer is Surat. The release says the 89th edition was organised there with the theme 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat', led by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya together with Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. The ride began at the Sardar Patel Statue at Mangadh Chowk and covered 6 km towards the Sarthana Zoo, after a warm-up of fitness activities, yoga and zumba. Option D deserves care rather than a quick rejection: the same 89th edition was also held in the national capital at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, but on a special Teachers' Day theme honouring teachers and coaches, and the main event that the release headlines is the one in Surat. Options A and C name other large cities of Gujarat and do not appear in the release at all.

Q2.SportsMedium

What was the theme of the 89th Fit India Sundays on Cycle?

  1. A.Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat
  2. B.Cycle for Clean Air
  3. C.Fit Youth, Fit Nation
  4. D.Pedal for Progress
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat

Explanation

The correct answer is 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat'. The release names this theme for the 89th edition and links it to the Nasha Mukti Sankalp Abhiyan, under which the Union Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister and the participants together took the Nasha Mukt Pledge. Options B, C and D are invented slogans that sound like fitness campaign lines but appear nowhere in the release. Themes are among the most commonly asked details in current affairs, so learn this one with its surrounding facts. The Minister set out four benefits of cycling that the theme ties together: it is an effective form of exercise, it supports the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign, it helps address pollution, and it reduces fuel consumption. He also urged people to cycle on working days for short trips rather than limiting it to Sundays.

Q3.SportsEasy

Which ministry organises Fit India Sundays on Cycle?

  1. A.Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
  2. B.Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
  3. C.Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
  4. D.Ministry of Education
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports

Explanation

The correct answer is the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The release states that it organises the initiative in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India, the Raahgiri Foundation and MY Bharat, and that Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, who heads this ministry, led the 89th edition in Surat. The cycling drive runs at the same time across all States and Union Territories, including at regional centres of the Sports Authority of India, National Centres of Excellence, SAI Training Centres, Khelo India State Centres of Excellence and Khelo India Centres. Options A, B and D are ministries whose remit touches public health, road use or schooling, and the campaign does relate to all three in spirit, which is what makes them plausible. But the organising ministry named in the release is the sports ministry. Note also that over 6000 NAMO Fit India clubs hold the ride weekly.

Q4.SportsMedium

At how many locations across the country was the 89th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle held?

  1. A.Over 10,000
  2. B.Over 25,000
  3. C.Over 50,000
  4. D.Over 5,000
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Over 25,000

Explanation

The correct answer is over 25,000. The release says the 89th edition was held across the country at more than that many locations, with more than 5 million young people taking part and carrying the message of a drug-free youth for a developed India. Options A, C and D are round figures of the same order that do not appear in the release, and they are the sort of near-miss numbers a paper setter reaches for. Keep the two big figures of this edition together, since a question can ask for either: the participation of more than 5 million people and the spread across more than 25,000 locations. A third number belongs in the same group, namely the more than 6000 NAMO Fit India clubs that organise the cycling initiative nationwide every week, which explains how a campaign of this size is sustained.
