503-Member Indian Contingent Sent Off for Asian Games 2026

India's team for the Asian Games 2026 has been sent on its way. The send-off ceremony was held in New Delhi on 8 September 2026. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya led the event. The Games are being hosted by Japan. The Indian contingent has 503 members, counting athletes and support staff together.

The four of them unveiled the official jersey of the contingent before the athletes and the support staff. The post of Chef de Mission is worth noting, because the paper setter often asks who leads a contingent on the ground at a Games.

The numbers of the contingent

Of the 503 members, more than 300 athletes are going to a continental Games of this kind for the first time. The minister called this a sign of new talent coming through and of the bench strength of Indian sport. He said selection had been kept transparent and merit based, with open trials, independent observers and camera monitoring.

What the minister said about past and future

Dr Mandaviya spoke about the Commonwealth Games 2026 held at Glasgow. India had won 13 gold medals at the previous edition of those Games, and he said the tally this time improved by more than 35 per cent. He also set out a longer plan. The target year is 2036, when India hopes to host the Olympic Games, and he described a ten-year plan with more than Rs 36,000 crore allocated for sports infrastructure. Dr P. T. Usha said a sporting journey is measured not only by medals but by dreams, and that the contingent travels as a representative of the country.
