Why in News
On 5 November 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India's Asian Para Games 2026 contingent at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi and marked its haul of 114 medals, a leap from the 14 medals won at the 2010 edition.
India's para-athletes have come back from the Asian Para Games 2026 at Aichi-Nagoya with 114 medals, the biggest haul the country has managed at the continental para event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the contingent at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on 5 November 2026, congratulated the athletes on behalf of 140 crore citizens and thanked their families, trainers and coaches for the part they had played.
How the 114 medals break up
| Medal | Number |
| Gold | 30 |
| Silver | 35 |
| Bronze | 49 |
| Total | 114 |
The size of the jump is clearest when set beside 2010, the year India came home from the Para Asian Games with a single gold and 14 medals in all. Besides the medals, the squad set five world records and nine Asian records, filled all three podium places in four separate events, and took nine gold medals on the closing day by itself.
Records and first-time golds
Gold came in several events where India had never won before. Mona Agarwal set a world record in para shooting, and Haney bettered his own earlier world mark. Sandeep set a world record on his very first appearance at these Games. Of the 61 athletes making their debut, 36 won a medal, and 34 of the 56 women in the squad finished on the podium. The Prime Minister pointed to India's growing weight in archery, athletics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, badminton, judo and powerlifting, named Himanshu, Ravi and Jehan, and recalled Rinku, who lost his mother two months before the Games and held up her photograph after winning his gold.
What the schemes delivered
Athletes supported by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme won 41 medals between them, and athletes from Khelo India won 19. The Prime Minister spoke of the approval of the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme, worth more than Rs 1,800 crore, and asked domestic manufacturers to see that gear, clothing and footwear worn on the field are made in India. He also listed measures for Divyangjan: a larger disability pension, the eligibility bar lowered from 80 per cent to 40 per cent, pension counted from birth rather than from the age of 18, an Indian Sign Language dictionary of 10,000 words, school books in sign language, and accessible public places under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan.
The next target
The Prime Minister called the Aichi-Nagoya podium a starting point rather than a destination. Avani and Manish have already won quotas for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, and the contingent was asked to begin preparing at once for a record showing there.
