PBSHABD: Prasar Bharati Free News Feed Serves 3,600 Outlets

Why in News

A backgrounder of 24 September 2026 detailed PBSHABD, the free news feed of Prasar Bharati launched on 13 March 2024, which now serves 3,600 media organisations and remains free up to March 2027.

PBSHABD is the free news feed service of Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting launched it in New Delhi on 13 March 2024, and a backgrounder issued on 24 September 2026 sets out how far the platform has travelled since. The name expands to Prasar Bharati - Shared Audio-Visuals for Broadcast and Dissemination, and it plays on the Hindi word for the spoken or written word.

From an internal wire to an open platform

What is now an open platform began as the Prasar Bharati News Service, a wire meant only for the broadcaster's own desks, whose copy fed bulletins on Akashvani and Doordarshan. The 2024 launch threw it open to outside newsrooms. Prasar Bharati itself is an autonomous body set up by an Act of Parliament: the law was passed in 1990 and the corporation came into existence on 23 November 1997, working through its two constituents, Akashvani and Doordarshan.

What a registered user gets

  • Content in five formats: text, video, audio, photographs and infographics.
  • News in 15 Indian languages and under nearly 50 news categories.
  • No subscription fee. Free access was first extended to March 2026 and has since been extended up to March 2027.
  • No Prasar Bharati logo and no credit line, so a district newspaper may carry a national story under its own masthead.

Newspapers and journals register with a valid RNI certificate, television and radio stations with uplink and downlink certificates, and digital publishers on submitting a copy of their PAN. In two years the user base has grown to 3,600 media organisations.

The network behind the feed

More than 1,500 reporters, correspondents and stringers feed the platform, and 60 dedicated desks work round the clock on what they send. Akashvani News runs 46 regional news units and a headquarters, putting out 607 bulletins a day in 92 languages and dialects, while Doordarshan News runs 31 regional news units and a headquarters with more than 145 bulletins. Every story is timestamped, datelined and captioned, and the service guards against fake or manipulated material. A PBSHABD 2.0, with new product lines, is planned.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalEasy

PBSHABD, the free news feed service in the news, belongs to which organisation?

  1. A.Press Trust of India
  2. B.Prasar Bharati
  3. C.Press Information Bureau
  4. D.Indian Institute of Mass Communication
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Prasar Bharati

Explanation

The correct answer is Prasar Bharati, India's public service broadcaster. PBSHABD is its free news feed, and the very name carries the parent body in it, since it expands to Prasar Bharati - Shared Audio-Visuals for Broadcast and Dissemination. The service grew out of the broadcaster's own internal wire, the Prasar Bharati News Service, and it draws on the same correspondents and desks that feed bulletins on Akashvani and Doordarshan. Option A names a news agency that is not connected with this platform. Option C is the government's own publicity arm, which issues press releases rather than running this multimedia feed. Option D is a training and research institution in mass communication and has no role in running the service. The ministry in charge of the launch was Information and Broadcasting.

Q2.NationalMedium

Up to which date has free access to PBSHABD been assured?

  1. A.March 2025
  2. B.March 2026
  3. C.March 2027
  4. D.March 2030
Show answer

Correct answer: C. March 2027

Explanation

The correct answer is March 2027. Free access has been stretched in steps rather than granted once and for all, which is exactly what makes this a favourite question. When the platform completed a year of operation, free access was extended to March 2026, and it was later extended again, this time up to March 2027, so media organisations can plan their use of the feed with some certainty. Option A is the month in which the first extension was announced, not the date up to which the service is free. Option B was the earlier assurance and has since been superseded, so it is the classic trap for a candidate who has read an older report. Option D is simply beyond anything announced. The service charges registered users no subscription fee for what they download.

Q3.NationalMedium

Which statement about PBSHABD is correct?

  1. A.Its content must carry the Prasar Bharati logo and a credit line
  2. B.Its content carries no logo and needs no credit line
  3. C.It is available only in Hindi and English
  4. D.It is open only to television channels
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Its content carries no logo and needs no credit line

Explanation

The correct answer is that the content carries no logo and needs no credit line. This is the feature that sets the platform apart from a conventional news agency, because a small newspaper can run a national or international story under its own masthead without attributing it to the broadcaster. Option A reverses that rule. Option C is wrong because the feed offers news in 15 Indian languages and under nearly 50 news categories, in five formats covering text, video, audio, photographs and infographics, which is what makes it useful to regional newsrooms. Option D is wrong because registration is open to newspapers and journals holding a valid RNI certificate, to television and radio stations holding uplink and downlink certificates, and to digital publishers who submit a copy of their PAN. Each organisation gets one login to share within its newsroom.
