First Fleet Support Ship Surya Launched at HSL Visakhapatnam
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Surya, the first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam on 6 October 2026.

Why in News
On 6 October 2026 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Surya, the first Fleet Support Ship, laid the keel of FSS-5 and opened the upgraded Slipway-4 and a 300-tonne Goliath Crane at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the first Fleet Support Ship (FSS-1), named Surya, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam on 6 October 2026. The same visit saw him lay the keel of the fifth ship of the class, FSS-5, and open an upgraded slipway and a new heavy crane.
Three milestones in one day
Traditional launch honours for Surya were performed by Laila Swaminathan, President of the Navy Wives Wellness Association, after which the vessel slid into the waters of the Bay of Bengal. The minister described the launch as a mark of achievement, the keel laying as a mark of resolve and the new slipway as a mark of growing capability.
What a Fleet Support Ship does
A navy that stays at sea far from home needs more than warships; it needs fuel, stores, spares and repair hands that travel with the fleet. Fleet Support Ships supply exactly that through replenishment at sea, extending how long and how far a task force can operate in the Indian Ocean Region. Designed and built in India by HSL, the ships carry greater cargo and fluid capacity, first-line maintenance workshops on board, a deck for Multi-Role Helicopter operations and their own self-defence systems.
The yard gets bigger tools
Slipway-4 has been lengthened and strengthened so that HSL can build and launch vessels of up to 45,000 DWT. Spanning Slipways 3 and 4 is a new 300-tonne Goliath Crane, designed and made by L and T Geostructure with Konecranes under Make in India. With programmable controls, variable frequency drives, tandem lifting, remote diagnostics and condition monitoring, it moves heavier hull blocks faster and more precisely, which is what modern block construction demands.
A yard with a long memory
The minister recalled that Jala Usha, the first ship built in independent India, was launched at Visakhapatnam in 1948, and credited HSL with serving the country’s maritime and defence needs for more than eight decades. He noted that the yard earned Miniratna Category-I status in 2025 after it was placed under the Ministry of Defence. He argued that self-reliance is a milestone but global competitiveness is the next leap, urged HSL to make timely delivery part of its culture, and said Visakhapatnam, with the Eastern Naval Command, the Naval Dockyard, HSL and its port, should grow into a major maritime industrial hub.

Exam Point of View
Remember the ship’s name (Surya, FSS-1), the yard (Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam), who launched it (Defence Minister Rajnath Singh), the keel laid the same day (FSS-5), the crane capacity (300 tonnes), the slipway limit (45,000 DWT), HSL’s Miniratna Category-I status in 2025 and Jala Usha of 1948.
Practice Questions
What is the name given to India’s first indigenously built Fleet Support Ship, launched in October 2026?
- A.Jala Usha
- B.Surya
- C.Varuna
- D.Samudra
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Surya
Explanation
The correct answer is Surya. FSS-1, the first of the Fleet Support Ships designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, was named Surya and launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Visakhapatnam yard on 6 October 2026. Traditional launch honours were performed by Laila Swaminathan, President of the Navy Wives Wellness Association, and the vessel entered the waters of the Bay of Bengal. Option A is wrong, though it is a tempting distractor: Jala Usha was the first ship built in independent India and was launched at Visakhapatnam in 1948, a point the minister recalled in his speech, but it is not the new support ship. Options C and D are wrong because no vessel of those names features in this launch; they are plausible-sounding naval names offered as traps. Candidates should tie the name Surya to FSS-1 and keep Jala Usha separately in memory as the 1948 milestone.
The upgraded Slipway-4 at Hindustan Shipyard Limited now allows the yard to build and launch ships of what maximum size?
- A.Up to 25,000 DWT
- B.Up to 35,000 DWT
- C.Up to 45,000 DWT
- D.Up to 60,000 DWT
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Up to 45,000 DWT
Explanation
The correct answer is up to 45,000 DWT. Slipway-4 at Hindustan Shipyard Limited was extended and strengthened so that the yard could take on larger hulls, and the Defence Minister inaugurated the upgraded slipway on the same day he launched Surya and laid the keel of FSS-5. Alongside it he opened a 300-tonne Goliath Crane spanning Slipways 3 and 4, designed and manufactured by L and T Geostructure with Konecranes under Make in India, fitted with programmable controls, variable frequency drives, tandem lifting, remote diagnostics and condition monitoring. Options A and B are wrong because they understate the new limit, and a yard restricted to those sizes could not undertake the larger and more complex programmes the upgrade is meant to enable. Option D is wrong because it overstates the capacity. Pair the slipway figure with the crane figure, since both are standard one-mark facts from this event.
Hindustan Shipyard Limited, where the first Fleet Support Ship was launched, is located in which city?
- A.Kochi
- B.Mumbai
- C.Visakhapatnam
- D.Kolkata
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Visakhapatnam
Explanation
The correct answer is Visakhapatnam. Hindustan Shipyard Limited stands in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and it was there that Surya was launched into the Bay of Bengal, the keel of FSS-5 was laid and the upgraded Slipway-4 and the 300-tonne Goliath Crane were inaugurated. The Defence Minister argued that the city, which already hosts the Eastern Naval Command, the Naval Dockyard, the shipyard and a major port, should be developed into a large maritime industrial hub, and he recalled that independent India’s first ship, Jala Usha, was launched there in 1948. Option A is wrong because Kochi hosts a different public shipyard. Option B is wrong because Mumbai’s naval shipbuilding is carried out by another yard altogether. Option D is wrong because Kolkata’s defence shipbuilding is handled by a separate company. Candidates should also note that HSL came under the Ministry of Defence and earned Miniratna Category-I status in 2025.
