Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 Sets Aside Rs 5,000 Crore for Tribal Villages
The Drinking Water Department reviewed tap water saturation in PM-JANMAN and DA-JGUA tribal villages, for which Rs 5,000 crore is earmarked under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.

Why in News
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation held its second follow-up review meeting on tap water saturation in PM-JANMAN and DA-JGUA tribal villages, for which Rs 5,000 crore stands earmarked under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
A dedicated pot of Rs 5,000 crore has been set aside under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 to close the drinking water gaps in tribal villages covered by two tribal welfare missions. The figure was placed before states at the second follow-up review and convergence meeting called by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, which works under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The two missions involved
The first is the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, written in short as PM-JANMAN. The second is the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, or DA-JGUA. Both aim at filling basic service gaps in tribal habitations, and the water component is to be delivered through the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Who met and why
Ashok K. K. Meena, Secretary of the department, chaired the meeting. Senior officers of the National Jal Jeevan Mission, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, state rural water supply and public health engineering departments and state tribal welfare departments attended. The meeting carried forward commitments the states and union territories had made at an earlier departmental summit, where they had agreed to reach saturation of tap water coverage in every eligible village under the two missions.
Four priorities for the states
- Matching the records of tribal welfare departments with the mission databases so that one validated list exists
- Finding villages and habitations still left out of coverage
- Drawing up technically sound detailed project reports with verified local government directory codes
- Joint validation and certification of coverage already achieved
Checking taps on the ground
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has run a state-wise exercise named SurveySetu, under which the status of functional household tap connections is verified household by household. States were told to present its findings jointly before the District Water and Sanitation Mission, which is chaired by the Deputy Commissioner or District Magistrate, and to settle any mismatch through field verification.
Where the states stand
Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Kerala and Manipur were asked to answer specific observations on code validation, project report papers, service levels and cost per tap connection. Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Assam were pressed to act on observations already sent to them. Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh said their proposals would reach the department during October 2026. Kamal Kishore Soan, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the National Jal Jeevan Mission, stressed that water supply and tribal welfare departments must own the proposals jointly before a committee co-chaired by the two secretaries.

Practice Questions
How much has been earmarked under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 to address drinking water gaps in PM-JANMAN and DA-JGUA villages?
- A.Rs 2,500 crore
- B.Rs 5,000 crore
- C.Rs 7,500 crore
- D.Rs 12,000 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Rs 5,000 crore
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 5,000 crore. This is the dedicated provision set aside under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 for closing drinking water gaps in the tribal villages covered by the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan. The figure was placed before states at the second follow-up review and convergence meeting of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, which works under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The review built on commitments the states and union territories had made at an earlier departmental summit to reach full tap water saturation in every eligible village. Options A, C and D give other amounts, and none of them matches the provision announced for these two tribal missions, so each of those three choices is incorrect.
Which ministry is running the SurveySetu exercise to verify the status of functional household tap connections?
- A.Ministry of Jal Shakti
- B.Ministry of Rural Development
- C.Ministry of Tribal Affairs
- D.Ministry of Panchayati Raj
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Ministry of Tribal Affairs
Explanation
The correct answer is the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It has carried out a state-wise exercise named SurveySetu, in which the status of functional household tap connections is verified at the level of each household. States have been advised to present the findings of this exercise jointly, through their water supply departments, tribal welfare departments and the survey agency, before the District Water and Sanitation Mission, and to resolve any mismatch through field verification so that a final validated database exists at the district level. Option A, the Ministry of Jal Shakti, is the ministry whose Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation convened the review and funds the taps, but the survey is not its exercise. Option B, the Ministry of Rural Development, and option D, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, have no role in this survey, so both are wrong.
Which of the following is the correct full form of DA-JGUA?
- A.Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan
- B.Dharti Aaba Jal Gram Udaan Abhiyan
- C.Deen Dayal Aadivasi Janjati Gramin Unnati Abhiyan
- D.Dharti Aaba Janjati Gram Ujjwal Abhiyan
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan
Explanation
The correct answer is Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan. DA-JGUA is one of the two tribal missions whose drinking water needs were reviewed by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation; the other is PM-JANMAN, the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan. The aim in both is saturation, that is, a working tap connection for every eligible household in every eligible tribal village, certified after joint validation. Option B replaces the village upliftment part of the name with a water and flight theme that does not exist. Option C invents an entirely different scheme name built around Deen Dayal and rural progress. Option D changes Utkarsh to Ujjwal and drops the correct form of the word Janjatiya. Since only option A reproduces the official expansion exactly, it is the answer.
At the district level, which body is the main platform for validating drinking water coverage, and who chairs it?
- A.District Water and Sanitation Mission, chaired by the District Magistrate
- B.District Planning Committee, chaired by the Zila Panchayat President
- C.District Rural Development Agency, chaired by the Chief Development Officer
- D.District Water Regulatory Board, chaired by the Divisional Commissioner
Show answer
Correct answer: A. District Water and Sanitation Mission, chaired by the District Magistrate
Explanation
The correct answer is the District Water and Sanitation Mission, chaired by the District Magistrate. The Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation stressed that villages under the two tribal missions should be reviewed regularly through meetings of this body, which is headed by the Deputy Commissioner or District Magistrate of the district. It is meant to serve as the key platform for coordination between departments, for validating survey findings and for identifying the real coverage gaps that need work. Option B names the District Planning Committee, which handles district plans rather than tap water validation. Option C names the district rural development agency, which implements rural schemes but was not given this role. Option D describes a district water regulatory board under a Divisional Commissioner, a body that does not exist in this arrangement. Hence option A is correct.
